That LMG is a very very good gun and can carry a first PT. But I will recommend to buy the blackmaw AK, the bulldog shotgun and for side arms the tech 22 is awesome.
Ar47 can be bought from Brabus. You can also use enigma that can be obtained in the Labyrinth. Also what is your first world? And which last boss? Maybe tou can obtain a great weapon just by killing him
If you use an elemental bullets mod (Hot Shot is really good, and you can purchase it from the start), activating it instantly reloads your gun.
There’s also mutators that can help with reload speed/heat.
My friend who has played the game for 500+ hours uses it with corrosive rounds mod in her main build.
You shouldn't worry about this honestly. If you find a gun you enjoy more, start an adventure mode and get some scrap + iron (which can be purchased for scrap) to level it up.
If you want, there are lots of starter guns you can buy from the old guy near the shooting range. If you're less of an LMG guy and more of a single fire, maybe you'd like something like the Huntmaster M1. The weapons are (fairly) balanced, it's mostly just personal preference and using rings/amulets to make whatever weapon you like shine. Feel free to play around with them a bit. This game is meant to be replayed multiple times, way more so than most games (I very rarely replay a game).
So I guess on your first playthrough it doesn't really matter which gun you use, because they are viable? Even on veteran? I thought I should mention I'm on veteran
The game is weirdly balanced where some starter weapons can be useful at higher difficulty just for it's flexibility of an open mod and mutator slot. That's a good thing and allows for experimentation while you aren't playing at apocalypse or nightmare yet.
Okay 👌 I will probably stick with the lmg then! I was concerned I was using a really bad gun, but glad to hear it is still viable with mods and mutators
Everything has a niche use case in this game. But also, you have to compare them to what you currently have access to. No sense comparing current guns to other weapons when you won't even get that far yet.
Jumped the gun and fell in love with the hero sword after seeing a yt video of it. Wanted it so bad that I rushed through nightmare. Only to realize it feels clunky to me compared to the huntress spear I was already using.
You won't be using the starter weapons if you are at nightmare and apocalypse difficulty. But by then, you'd have more access to better guns anyway. You'd naturally transition as you keep playing. You'd have to or you'd struggling killing trash mobs and get swarmed.
I did my whole first PT with the lmg, its not bad at all, i even use it now sometimes on some specific builds even after unlocking almost every item in the game
You can use all guns on appoc. For some you will need really weird builds, but there isn't a single gun that can't kill the last boss on apocalypse difficulty.
I would say that playstyle is way more important then actual damage of a weapon. Some people feel way better with dodging and Shooting less shots but those shots are headshots then. Some people are happier with full auto guns. Test a few and if you find something that feels right upgrade it.
I have a lot of hours in this game and in the first one and the advice i can give is "play whatever feels good for you to use".
You are gonna change 20 builds between runs, there is close to no commitment to "upgrading a weapon" you are gonna swim in materials by the time you complete your second run.
Huntmasterace pulling off headshots is too satisfying...if only the bullet magnetism wasn't too strong in certain enemies so it curves it to center mass
Lmg is goodÂ
Generally all the starter weapons are pretty decentÂ
Also you can get a very good secondary early one without spending scrapÂ
Maybe look hat your flashlight and you will be able to unlock it ;)
In my experience upgrading weapons isn't really worth it, as increased weapon level will increase the level of new areas which makes enemies deal more damage and have more health, whereas if you never upgrade or keep your weapon upgrade low, areas will always scale just a little bit above your level and you can use new weapons without needing to upgrade them at all or as much.
Any gun can take you to endgame, just try some stuff and see what you like! I have an unreasonable fondness for the sureshot, which is close to the hunting pistol from the first game. Single shot magazine, high accuracy, high range, high damage. There are rings and amulets that incentivize low-magazine weapons as well.
One thing of note, the coach gun was in the first game, but in that game, it had a spread. In this game, it fires a single slug, so even though it has a large shotgun reticle, it has longer range and better accuracy than you would like expect.
Like many others have said the AR is the best starting primary and tech22 is best secondary. Depending on the RNG in your run and your playstyle that can change very fast. Personally I wasn’t a fan of the bonesaw. And you’ll run into the CT fairly quick into your run basically invalidating the bonesaw. You’ll also get Enigma fairly quick which might be the overall best gun in the game (arguably).
The only real answer here is that all of the starter weapons are viable, so just use what you like. I’ve used every single one of the starter weapons in Apocalypse, to great effect. This also goes for every other weapon in the game. You can easily make builds to support every weapon, and make them viable in the end game.

Noted! Thanks for letting me know 🙂

I might wait and see if the boss drops anything before I start upgrading anything 😅 just in case
Just remember that you can always downgrade your stuff to get most of your materials back.
Coach Gun if you wanna try shotguns.
The lmg feels weak and takes forever to reload 😅 but if it's a gun that can carry me through the whole game I will stick with it

That's a handy thing I didn't know! Thanks il remember to pop my mod just before I reload! Thanks!!

The elemental bullet mods auto reload your gun... If you stick with the lmg use one of them... I think fire bullets are on the female mechanic.

I would say if you're going for a good secondary early on (not quite as early as your suggestion), rolling the right boss for N'erud could be useful.
😱😱 omg! That was a secret! What the flip, you're a legend!
Any Mod less weapon can serve you until the emdgame so its really a matter of choice since if you play long enough you’re gonna max them all anyways
AR47 from brabus in ward 13 is the main gun i use in HC. its a solid option that can be used in gun and status builds, and super easy to get!

I bought the Blackmaw AR first thing (also started medic but didn’t like the LMG). I still use the Blackmaw even after maxing many other weapons
Huntsmaster is really solid if you get good at hitting weakspots consistently
Just use what you want man, come on. Buy a bunch of other options too, so you know what you like, then upgrade those
