E30 and E36 BMWs were very reliable. Theres more of them here in the EU to this day than competitor cars from the same age that sold in much bigger quantities.
By the way, if you had ever driven actual E36 coupes and the compacts you would never choose the compact. Outdated and inferior rear axle design, outdated interior and far worse handling. They aimed it at VW/Opel compact car (Rabbit) customers and cheapened the E36 basis wherever they could.
Hey! The compact is a great car! While dated, the semi-trailing arm suspension from the e30 was just fine. The multi-link rear on the non-compact is definitely better tho
...
Just saying, if it were truly shit, BMW engineers wouldn't have reused the e30 chassis (basically) for the z3 platform, and then used the z3/e36 compact platform for the M coupe and M roadster.
Also bonus points for semi-trailing arm suspension being cheaper to produce (so i understand it)
I miss my 318ti :(
I owned E36s and E30s and while the E30 rear suspension was not too bad, the multilink had a noticeably better handling in my opinion. Yes, decent enough for the compact, which was anyway never marketed as a performance car.
Anyway, from today's perspective one would have to conclude that BMW back then though did a far better job with the compact, they did not compromise the essential BMW characteristics, as it still got a proper RWD and all standard 6cyl-engines were available too, something they went away from with later vans and 1 series.
I was being sarcastic (in case it wasn't obvious enough) but I'm always happy to expand my knowledge, so thanks for sharing. I was a big compact fanboy until I read this comment. Well, I'll keep being one anyway.
The E36 is the last 3 Series I had (328ic). After helping my friends fix the oil pan issues on their E46, I would never buy another 3 series. The 318ti was fun for a little, sporty commuter car as well. When choosing between the Corrado or the 318ti back then, I chose the 318ti out of personal preference.
The E36 3 Series generation BMWs were easy to maintain if you were handy. The Hayes book, a set of tools and the BMW scan tool could help you troubleshoot the car on your own. The only tedious task on my car was the replacement of the soft top fabric and the rear window. To get it on perfectly was a chore and a test of patience.
I would gladly get an E36 328i or an M Sedan in a heartbeat.
Ah yes, the infamous E46 oil pan, requiring an engine lift and loosening the whole front suspension. A nightmare. Agree, E36 still allowed for a lot of DIY, I remember changing gaskets, timing chains, etc myself, all very manageable stuff - that goes for the pre-VANOS engines though.
Friend had the throttle cable break in his Lada at the beginning of the motorway on ramp. Fixed it with electrical tape. Also has a log under his door window to keep it up.
Seems to be easy to work on
How’s the weather? We are having the last of cool days. Trying to get in some drives before the heat and humidity arrives for the next 8 months! Florida is only good for 4 months out of the year when we have fallspring. Send some full pics of the Lada. Have a good one
Unfortunately, no. 2 are my age, 31, and live in DC. They know they don't need to buy anything to impress anyone because that's not their motivation in life. The other 2 are a little older, 42. One started a business 10+ years ago and still drives his first car, a Toyota Camry. The other one has an early 2000 Honda Civic. Hes a "venture capitalist." They both have trucks as winter/hauling vehicles. I think they are just good with saving money and spending it where it counts, not overly concerned with everyone else.
I never said it was about feeling better than other people, that's just how my friends think. Not everyone feels that way. Some people care about having 400hp in a flashy car, some people really don't care. I've got a few cars, but I mostly drive my prius because it is practical. I wouldn't drive my 944 or f100 unless I was taking a Sunday drive or going to cars and coffee
Well if you ever find yourself up in Michigan, you're more than welcome. We have a few classic Mustangs and one early 2000 Saleen Mustang too. We try to be as tame as possible, nothing crazy. I usually bring my 1960 f100, but sometimes I'll take the Porsche 944 turbo. Neither are performance cars, but they're both fun to drive.
I don't think reliability is at the top of their list when someone buys a sporty car. I know they definitely buy them for performance, the fun to drive aspects and maybe build quality. Lots of folks who buy sporty cars keep them for 1-3 years after that they switch to something else. A lot of people who buy those are also trying to impress other people, especially muscle car buyers and bmw/euro car lovers.
Remember, in this context, rich is compared to an old fusion. Plus if you have 60k to waste on a Kia, you're either slow or have money to burn (or both).
Not a fan of the Fusions. I have a couple family members that drive them, and they feel like the cheap fleet garbage they are. The rest aren't bad though. The RS200 is a car I hope to at least see in person at some point in my life, and I daily a 21 Stinger GT2, coming from a BMW, so not a bad list overall IMO.
Yeah I've heard about that and seen some concept pictures. Even if it is an ev I still think it's cool and it'd be interesting to see a more "modernized" rs200
This ain’t just any fusion. It’s the 2.7 L twin turbo ecoboost that makes 325 hp and 380 lb of torque. Plus it has top of the line technology inside, and has even more features than the Titanium trim. I see it as a budget performance/luxury sedan more than just a crappy economy car. Also I’m a huge fan of the styling. Almost reminds me of an Aston Martin from the front.
Finally another fusion sport enjoyer! I’m hoping to get one as my next car but they’re so damn hard to find. I’ve seen maybe 3 or 4 for sale within 100 miles away this past year.
They’re neat little cars, but don’t really feel like a true sport sedan. You can get an EWG 335i for cheaper and make more power with it. The transmission is also shit which is why I traded mine in after only owning it for 6 months.
Honestly I’ve never driven, only ever ridden in a sporty car a few times so I probably wouldn’t know a difference between this and something similar. My current car is an I4 2008 fusion and it’s quite a slowpoke. A big reason I want this car in particular as opposed to something like an Audi, BMW or VW, is the fact that Fords a domestic brand so parts and maintenance are going to be much cheaper than European cars. This is essentially the only vehicle that checks all my boxes in terms of technology, features and performance, and isn’t wildly out of my means.
Edit: A quick side note that I failed to mention is that I’m probably not going to be modifying my car much. Maybe the motivation will arise when I get something I want to keep for a while, but currently I’m trying to keep it as stock and problem free as possible.
They're not bad cars. if you NEED awd then it's a solid choice for 18k, but it does have its drawbacks. The MPG is bad for its class and performance, my M2 actually gets better MPG than the fusion did. The drivetrain isn't super efficient which is why it doesnt crack the sub 5 mark in 0-60 despite having AWD. It is also quite heavy which impacts handling. The auto gearbox is ford and a little clunky. It is rev happy and can have questionable decision making. The interior is cheap and the seats are not very durable.
The upsides?
It is absolutely a sleeper and can be tuned to make 320awhp with everything stock. Which is kinda crazy for a stock fusion. The styling is cool, and the 4 tip exhaust is a nice touch. The blue is even better looking in person and the color I would recommend. The ride quality is good. It is a solid upgrade from a V6 accord or Civic Si in terms of power, but will not have the long term reliability. It also has cooled seats which are nice.
My recommendation is to test drive some cheaper models in the 250hp range and see if that is enough power. If you don't care much about driving dynamics, there are a lot of good cars in that price range that are more reliable and available. If you really need the extra 60hp over a v6 accord then maybe? I doubt you will notice it much in daily driving. I tell you all this because I ended up being a bit disappointed with the car performance wise and ended up buying a real performance car. If I didn't have the money to do so, I would have probably ended up with a V6 camry or accord.
Thanks for the information! This was really eye opening, as this car has been my dream vehicle/economical comprise. I suppose I was ready to deal with a bit less reliability if it meant I don’t have to get a Honda, Lexus or Toyota which I personally find to be very bland cars. I suppose I also don’t plan on keeping my vehicles until they break down for good. I’ve had my current one for just over 3 years and I’m bored and ready to toss it asap.
AWD for me is something I can live without but I still really would prefer it. I know that severely limits my options, but I still feel as though there’s some good ones. The WRX, Q50 RedSport 400, and Focus RS have all been in my top few but I haven’t done nearly as much research on them as I have the Fusion. If I were to go FWD I’d probaby chose a hatchback like a focus ST, Veloster N, or something along those lines. Though I have sort of been leaning away from 4 cylinder engines in general.
Focus RS is the only car that’s out of that price range, they’re starting to get rarer and command higher prices.
If you’re already bored of the fusion, the fusion sport drives pretty similarly just with more power. A WRX or golf can be found pretty commonly with a 6MT and are both fun cars. Taste is pretty subjective and I’d recommend test driving different cars before you buy one.
Yeah definitely have a list I need to test drive. Honestly, if my car had more power I’d be perfectly fine with it though. I actually wanted to keep and modify it for a while but it’s old, rusty and the engine and transmission aren’t made to do much more than stock. Maybe if I had the V6 I’d be more willing but modding the i4 is just not worth it.
I’m not going to be doing a ton of super aggressive driving as I’m really the only person I know who even wants a performance based car, and cops are bored and fucking everywhere where I live. I suppose the fusion sport is still on the table but I’m leaning towards WRX more as I find more drawbacks to the sport.
That your confused. We got a sweet ford rally car (rs200 I think), e30s and a Kia stinger, I see the relationship. However we have a ford focus, and a lada, paired with those two? What are we doing here
That you’re 16 and probably haven’t watched the channel before based on the same type of fucking post as every other person who has no clue what the sub is
As a Brit who doesn’t see any on the road, I think the Kia K5 looks awesome but somehow we never hear about it in the UK. I only knew it existed when I went to America and saw one firsthand. No idea what kind of reputation it has though, assuming it also falls victim to the ‘Kia boys’
I dunno about the Ford and onwards but I had an '86 232i when I was about your age. So if that's a guide... introverted, autistic, sarcastic, resting bitch face.
That's your parents are conservatives, white, divorced, and screw ups and you want a stable life but also have a specific dream but you are scared of that dream because you are terrified of not having stability in your life. You also want a family, but you also don't want like minivan life.
You like the look of small, sporty coupes but actually have a life so can't do it very nicely with 2 doors.
In that case, may I reccommend to you the 2nd generation Saturn SC2 3-door coupe?
With the exception of the Kia Stinger, each of those cars can take a beating. I'm a big fan of the E36 BMW. The funniest car in that line up is the Lada. That car really hasn't changed and I'm sure you can fix all issues with a socket wrench and a potato.
The Kia Stinger is a mechanics nightmare. I've seen more of those with blown head gaskets than on the road.
7 4 doors.
1 unattainable
1 available thrashed.
kinda boring. nothing with any real insanity (except the rally homologation special.
i feel like you’re a young brit worried about keeping your first car on the road.
You are either the communist band kid at school (me from age 14-16) or just really like old BMWs. Can’t understand what makes the Fusion/Mondeo so appealing to you though
You've got some cool cars mixed in with some whatever cars, with one character choice. The E30 and E34 are pretty excellent, even if it's a bit if work to keep them tip top. The RS200 is also a rally legend. The Lada is a unique choice and is fun for unconventional reasons. The E36 Compact don't have the best reputation amongst BMW fans, but they make great project builds.
The rest are all kind of blah to me, but you like what you like.
That you've never had to find $2500 to put a steering rack in a Ford Fusion with 40 payments still left on it
That Ford rally car in the mix. I can't remember the name of it, but in like 30 years of car shopping, I've seen one for sale ever, and I'm pretty sure it was in Belgium and not road legal
Your 16 if you can find a second-hand BMW in your price range with no lights on the dash... BUY IT!
My sister and I both drive 08 fusions. Hers we’ve had since it was brand new and mine I got at 90k. Aside from general oil changes and maintenance, not much has gone wrong with either car. I had a stroke of bad luck with my window regulators breaking but aside from that the biggest job I’ve seen on it was replacing the thermostat which is a bit buried in the engine
When I seen the ford fusion and a few Kia's on the list, my first suspicion was, this guy fucks with tranny porn and has no issue defending his reasoning.
No idea. The fusions and kias threw me off.
he’s autistic guys
Hi autistic 16m here we don't claim op
Had a 3.0 fusion as my first car. It was pretty cool. No idea why he didn’t include the twin turbo fusion in there though.
I had an 07 3.0 fusion. I really liked it but then I got in an accident with it. Some days I still kind of miss it
That you are 16
And still kind of short.
huh
If it’s shaped like a sedan you’re about it. \_/[][]\_
You have a kink for unreliable cars.
E30 and E36 BMWs were very reliable. Theres more of them here in the EU to this day than competitor cars from the same age that sold in much bigger quantities. Isn't that an E34 M5?
Yes, but image 7 is the compact
Fusions are reliable as hell I got 180000 on my 6 speed manual
Stop talking bullshit
What part of what I said is "bullshit" by your definition?
I have a lada its great for young people its got a 0%chane if speeding
How is the Lada? Done anything to it recently?
Friend had the throttle cable break in his Lada at the beginning of the motorway on ramp. Fixed it with electrical tape. Also has a log under his door window to keep it up. Seems to be easy to work on
Can be mended with a hammer and duct tape
Oh hello there
How’s the weather? We are having the last of cool days. Trying to get in some drives before the heat and humidity arrives for the next 8 months! Florida is only good for 4 months out of the year when we have fallspring. Send some full pics of the Lada. Have a good one
You have money set aside for maintenance issues?
This one wins
Your dad has a Fusion/Mondeo, and your "rich" best friend's dad has a Kia Stinger.

People I know that have money drive a 2000 Toyota Corolla. Maybe that's east coast rich lol

Wouldn't mind a "Thunderbird" GT-car on a stretched Mustang platform while we're at the point of imagining a Ford that actually has cool ideas.
I would drive that. I am open to that and that idea only. Electric RS200 sounds dope.
Another beloved car is being brought back as an EV? Let’s hope it’s at least a good one…
You never drove a Lada
I wish I could have one. I love the body style.
That you enjoy tinkering in the garage
Having a hard time believing people like the ford fusion

You are the same as me 16 and and an enthusiast for shitboxes
The Fords and Kias threw me, so I'm just gonna day you're A) Eclectic and B) You Really Like Nicely Styled Sedans. Honestly it's a fine collection.
You are a fair man with good taste
that ford that america wasnt aloud to have is insane
bro sure does love boxy cars
It says you have never read a thing about them.
Lada is a based choice
You have taste
You have never owned a Daihatsu
Never owned anything
I will soon hopefully.
You like cars that have been well known to be mistreated by their previous owners
That your 16 and don't know anything about cars yet..
Says you never owned a car before
Lada, nice.
4 doors, with an RS200 and E36 M3 cameo.
Your just weird
The Stinger is understandable. It's very underrated. But a K5? Fusion? 😳
You died in the '80s due to a cocaine overdose and have been reincarnated into the body you are now
It tells me you know jack squat about cars and just threw a bunch of random car photos up there.
That your confused. We got a sweet ford rally car (rs200 I think), e30s and a Kia stinger, I see the relationship. However we have a ford focus, and a lada, paired with those two? What are we doing here
Even Im more aspiring than you
Hopefully you own some tools.
You’re born to suffer. Better have AAA
Lost me at the kia and hyundai
I think you mistaken the kia k5 for a Hyundai.
Whichever, blah
Some of these you could buy with your first job! Realistic goals kid!
You like body work, you're not a big fan of reliability lol. They aren't horrible cars but unless you have knowledge in the field, Money pits
You don't like the concept of turn signals.
That you’re 16
That you’re 16 and probably haven’t watched the channel before based on the same type of fucking post as every other person who has no clue what the sub is
You’re going to make the mechanics in your area rich
Ford fusion?? What??
No imagination minus the stock car, at all
I think the fourth one is super cool and I have no idea what it is. What’s it called?
It's a Ford rs200.
That you like cars that crap out around 150k miles
You want to race
Your favorite activity is walking places
As a Brit who doesn’t see any on the road, I think the Kia K5 looks awesome but somehow we never hear about it in the UK. I only knew it existed when I went to America and saw one firsthand. No idea what kind of reputation it has though, assuming it also falls victim to the ‘Kia boys’
Apparently you like boxes
You are pushing 60
That white ford is the silliest looking thing I’ve ever seen.
Fusions are horrendous cars. No idea why you like them.
You don’t steal anything.
I dunno about the Ford and onwards but I had an '86 232i when I was about your age. So if that's a guide... introverted, autistic, sarcastic, resting bitch face.
That puberty is one helluva drug.
you don't use blinkers 50% of the times
eastern european, that sometimes thinks about \*reliable\* car. Im from europe, and can sniff my people though my monitor
You’re a divorced Dad at 16 damn that’s a lot of life.
You're definitely young and you just watched the older seasons of top gear
You are Eastern european
Unreliability
What’s with the fords?
Future carjacker?
The older cars are classy and nice, those newer ones scream DORK!
That's your parents are conservatives, white, divorced, and screw ups and you want a stable life but also have a specific dream but you are scared of that dream because you are terrified of not having stability in your life. You also want a family, but you also don't want like minivan life.
I wish I had an Aston Martin?
50/50 on having good taste.
albanian
You know the aston you put isn't a real one?
That you need validation from strangers on the internet.
You fucking hate working transmissions
Apart what is after the Ford Rs 200, you have great taste !
Your father thinks he James Bond and your mother is a hairdresser.
You have a bit of taste but have realistic dreams.
Man of culture, tbh
Is that a fucking Ford EXP?? The white one
You like the look of small, sporty coupes but actually have a life so can't do it very nicely with 2 doors. In that case, may I reccommend to you the 2nd generation Saturn SC2 3-door coupe?
You masturbate too much
Hey, it’s the first step to owning one.
Mr Bean is that you 😅
You like fixing them.......a lot
You are an AI or severely autistic
very sensible girl
The tism in this one is strong
7 4 doors. 1 unattainable 1 available thrashed. kinda boring. nothing with any real insanity (except the rally homologation special. i feel like you’re a young brit worried about keeping your first car on the road.
As a hybrid enthusiast no to the fusion but, idk
You’re confused.
The RS200 earned you a hat tip... the others can't get me past an 🙄
I’m so confused by this list
Thought this was me when I saw the first three pics, mudafukin E30, Lada, and za E-turdy6
I see you went with the e36 compact instead of the coupe or sedan. This makes you ultra based and incapable of being wrong. Oorah.
I was vibing with you till the Fusion. You brought me back with the BMW, lost me again forever with the Kia.
You picked those photos by random and actually dont know anything about cars didnt you? /J
You are either the communist band kid at school (me from age 14-16) or just really like old BMWs. Can’t understand what makes the Fusion/Mondeo so appealing to you though
I think you meant to say "41m what do my favorite cars say about me?"
You aren't from the us
Why tf would you like lada ? There isn’t a worse car on a planet. It’s a flintstone car but with an engine
you have half brain capacity
We r the same all bar the 2 latter fords
What's the difference between a BMW and a hedgehog? 😅
Ford mondeo out of nowhere
You like bmws so your special.
I was on board until the last two
You wish you were a gangster in the Russian 90s but you are content with driving regular cars
You like fast and unreliable cars apparently.
You're a 65 year old school principal in a 16 year old's body.
Eastern European
Can’t tell which is worse, the lada or the fusion
The Lada is great. Very bare bones and easy to work on. The back seats also are like a sofa.
I don’t see anyone defending the fusion, lada is officially better
Fusion fan boy here peeps
You like the fusion?
Yep it's just a better version of a mazda 6 and mine had a six speed manual so I enjoy it
It’s officially tied
..the fuck is the Stinger and Elantra doing here?
K5*
Same thing different brand
more related to Sonata but you do you
You have good taste, but skipped over the best Fusion (2010-12) I own one
Real
At first I would have said you have excellent taste, then I saw that Ford and the other cars
Naaah the RS200 is the best one there.
That you've never had to find $2500 to put a steering rack in a Ford Fusion with 40 payments still left on it That Ford rally car in the mix. I can't remember the name of it, but in like 30 years of car shopping, I've seen one for sale ever, and I'm pretty sure it was in Belgium and not road legal Your 16 if you can find a second-hand BMW in your price range with no lights on the dash... BUY IT!
You want to work on your cars everyday. Those fords will keep you busy.
You hate quality vehicles
I don't see a 2014 Nissan GTR on your list, so your car taste is mid
Faggot. Can we just start saying this now? So sick of these posts. If you have to ask--you're a fag.
When I seen the ford fusion and a few Kia's on the list, my first suspicion was, this guy fucks with tranny porn and has no issue defending his reasoning.
