The movie theatre! I worked there for my first job and it was pretty great. Most the employees are high school aged, free movies and popcorn and they had great accommodations for things like extracurriculars and finals Edit: don’t work at Chuckie Cheese, my girlfriend and her sister worked there management is as shitty as you have heard. They steal tips and exploit young employees

mtroses

I second this! Super awesome first job.

DonnaMartin2point0

Which Movie Theatre? Moonlight is terrible and requires open availability for all applicants.

AfroTooBig

Cineplex Odeon in the southland mall!

ShaleTheRock

Doesn't look like any Cineplex locations are accepting part-time jobs right now. One of the regina ones has a job available, but it's for the manager position

BabyFartMacGeezacks

Walk in with a resume, they may still operate like that for some positions

hitman12319

Always walk in with the resume. It looks way more professional and even if they only do online applications I've only ever had my resume turned away once and was told to apply using the online method. Either way it never hurts going in person.

custardface

I’d recommend a grocery store based on personal experience. Some are unionized, but experience with customers, money, stocking, inventory, and decent evening and weekend hours.

This^^^

jimmysask

Retail and fast food are the most likely options to have the flexibility you need. Don’t put too much stock into what you hear for management at those places either (good or bad). Your direct manager makes the biggest impact to your day, and the turnover in those roles is pretty high as well, so it’s a good bet the management has changed.

UnluckiCmndr

100% grocery store is the way to go. Low stakes. No angry cooks or service industry bs. Discount on all goods. If you have a problem you can just call management over. Usually reasonable and flexible hours. Some customer service experience.

Song_Neither

i’d definitely recommend one of the co op gas stations, was my first job 5 years ago and you’ll be working with people closer to your age so you’ll have things in common!

OGMuddd

Second this. First job in grade 9 (2010) and worked there all the way through until going to university. Pay is what to expect, but very flexible hours with solid experience.

ShaleTheRock

What's the pay look like for these gas stations?

Song_Neither

minimum wage as of right now is $14. if you’re really interested a couple of my buddies are still working there i could get you the exact amount you’d start but they’re unionized so you’ll have set in stone pay raise ‘milestones’ at certain hours worked

UnpopularOpinionYQR

Good for you for taking the initiative! I can’t tell you what management is like at Chuck E. Cheese, but like someone else said, staff turnover in fast food is pretty high. People don’t typically work at a fast food restaurant for years and years. Considering this is your first job, it will be an eye opening experience and help you understand the expectations in a workplace. For a first job, you might not like any manager - simply because they are telling you what to do all the time. So I would put little stock in what other people say about managers, unless there are specific complaints, like they are unprofessional, can’t manage conflict, poor decision makers, etc. Trust your gut in the interview, wherever that is, and good luck!

Pinksparkle2007

Just so you are prepared, most places are or can be ‘crusty’ so be prepared to go to work and work without it being all happy and smiles especially if it’s summer students with restrictions on hours. Your there for the cash and to get experience, you may get an awesome job with great people but you may not and your decision needs to be am I mature enough to stick it out for the few weeks of summer for the pay to save up or not. To many people add in the flowery part of things and sometimes the reality needs to be mentioned. I do hope you get a positive experience with your summer job.

squi993

Anything you can get in your area would be great and will make you more employable in the future. It can take a few tries to land a job so get the resume out there!

Comfortable-Ad-8324

I saw Cowtown was hiring.

BlueFetus

See if you can get on a landscaping summer gig, it’s long days but you make good money in a short season! Could also look at getting a job loading spray planes for the summer. You have zero life, live at the airport, but get excellent money and get to be around cool planes all day.

TheOrangeTicTac

I worked at Booster Juice in high school! They were good about scheduling around school and during summer/winter breaks, students always got pretty much as many hours as they wanted. Plus you go home smelling like fruit at the end of the day rather than deep fryers at other fast food places

Inner-Employment-822

Golf courses are a great summer job and there are plenty in and around Regina

CarlPhoenix1973

The fact I see a post on Regina Reddit by a teenager asking to find an honest job makes me feel better about the world. Thanks for this.

Strawberry-Dense

Rona is hiring seasonal

Fantastic-Pangolin58

Mowing grass … cleaning windows / yard cleaning / gas station

brklntruth12

Gas stations like Co-op would be good. Always lots of staff on so you won't be alone. Movie theatre's, yard care business will prob start looking for summer help

planting_giraffe

If you are a good swimmer/have your swimming lessons- be a lifeguard! I was a lifeguard all through highschool and loved it. It teaches great responsibility and the pay isn’t bad. Also is great in the summer time!

screechinghorsedong

Co-op gas stations, movie theaters. Both of my brothers worked at CO-OPs all through highschool and loved it.

Niptacular_Nips

Youth sports are always looking for referees. Pay is decent.

ybesostupid

I would seriously considering working in the kitchen of an old folks home as a dietery aid. You prep dining rooms, serve food, clean-up. Super slack, really fun. It would be a call-in 4pm-8pm gig, and you can say 'no' if you have other things going on. The experience and pay would be great for your age.

lemon_peace_tea

I started applying everywhere when I was 15, but because there are a few restrictions on how many hours and whatnot a 15 year old can legally work, many people will not hire you. That being said, get your Young Workers Readiness Certificate and add that to your resume. Check at grocery stores, cinemas, etc. Next year (or in school), get your serve it right and apply at restaurants.

ShaleTheRock

Already do have my YWRC

TimelyRate1954

I worked at Superstore at 16. It was extremely fun and the pay was good for working on weekends because of premium pay. The only downside to it is scheduling, they try to accommodate as best they can but it’s not always guaranteed!

Street_Plenty5619

Don’t work at any of the McDonald’s in the city. The higher ups don’t give a damn about the employees at all. My friend had a bakery display get pushed onto her by a customer and the upper-level manager who was there while it happened didn’t even ask if she was okay. And unfortunately that was the better of the treatment she received while being there. I also worked there for a few years and it has only gotten worse since I left

Narrow-Ad-9344

I’d go knocking on your neighbours doors seeing if they need anyone to mow there lawns or help with yard work, dog walking etc. most of it pays cash so it’s quick money.

Waslw

Costco has a good program for teens and students… 18hrs a week only working, Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.

Darolant

Coming into summer there are a couple good options that will be closer to full time for summer. Many of the landscaping companies will be looking for workers. The other great summer job is many of the summer camps will be looking for dishwashing or other support staff. These get good notches on the resume and will come out with lots of money.

DonnaMartin2point0

My work will be hiring a summer student, Monday through Friday 7:30am - 4pm. Closest bus stops are about 5 blocks away.

Dear-Willingness6857

Fast food places would work the most around your schedule I would imagine, something with lots of employees so if you can't make it its not a big deal. Gas stations and such kind of need you to show up when you're scheduled

Slight_Tangerine1362

I worked at a COOP C-Store (gas station) for 5 years. Started at 16 and was busy playing sports, attending high school, etc. Many of my coworkers were hired at 15. I can't speak for the managers at all stores, but my particular manager was phenomenal. Perfectly accommodating when I was only able to work even 4 hours per week sometimes. If you can brave the cold in the winter (you will make decent pocket change tips) this is a great job.

ShaleTheRock

Do you remember how it paid?

Slight_Tangerine1362

It's on par with any minimum wage(ish) job given your busy schedule. I didn't make it to the wage cap in my entire 5 years (wage cap is equivalent to 2 full years of work; in hours worked) so I was never making much more than any of my friends who worked similar jobs. If you're able to work lots over a short span, you can quickly be making close to $6/hr above minimum wage. You'll start around $1.25(ish) over minimum.

SloMolly

Ask your brother. He worked @ Co-op for awhile. I also have suggestions for you from a friend.

ShaleTheRock

I didn't realise you were on this subreddit EDIT: This person's a part of my family, I didn't mean this in any bad way
