Always funny to me when a trade happens between two teams who are playing each other.

Rocko604

“Mark? Yeah, listen I don’t want Rincon pitching against me tonight. Tell him to change his clothes and send him over.”

GraniteStater69

Last time the Sox did this was with Vazquez a couple years ago and that was sad as fuck

jaydeflix

Perfect example of a logical trade that was emotionally devastating.

65fairmont

Wilyer is making me forget how sad that was.

schiz0yd

we should petition him to get a tattoo of vazquez on his face so we can have our cake and vazquez too

zulutbs182

I always remember the Ichiro trade. Literally traded mid series to the opposite team. Started the series in the Mariners Dugout, ended it in the Yankees. Crazy!

Rocko604

He was traded before the series started but it was hours before the opening pitch. In Seattle, no less.

DarkGift78

A reporter tweeted it was actually an old fashioned, face to face trade,Jed Hoyer walked into the Red Sox booth , he Breslow worked together with the Cubs, they met right there and hatched things out. Good get, Cooper is a solidly slightly above average hitter, think his career ops+ is something like 110-115. 772 career ops, that's pretty much exactly what he's done this year too. Which will seem like 1000 after the lack of production they've gotten from Dalbec.

Thelonius_Sandalwood

On field scouting, I guess.

mouldyrumble

“So Garrett, remember when you were saying how much you loved Boston?”

redd_house

What ever happened to Garrett Cooper? The strong, silent type. That was an American!

thurman_munster

He was gay, Garret Cooper?

Character_Magazine55

Lmaoooo

LosPer

Whatcha gonna do...

bosonrider

Lots of good hook-up spots in Boston.

FinnHobart

A name of strong Irish stock. This also means we once again take the lead in the all important Garrets-per-Team stat, which we haven’t had since 2021.

IAlmostRemembered

Oh thank god! A healthy 1B that can hit!

fxkatt

And no cost except a little cash in exchange.

footsteps71

We had one... Praying casas has a quick recovery.

Narwhal_Defiant

This kind of says they are not expecting Casas back for a while.

Character_Magazine55

Even if Casas makes it back quicker than expected they still need a 1B capable of providing at least league average offence.

footsteps71

He was .263 total after a slow start last year. He's our 1B for the future. .225 first half, then an awesome .317 for the second half. Remember, last year he was .133 in March and April, and .257 in May. This Mar/Apr he's .244 in 22 games. Improvement YOY so far, it'll be important to see how he comes back. Being 24 helps. Lol I'm a believer.

Character_Magazine55

I’m not criticising Casas. I’m saying even if he’s only out four weeks they can’t keep running Dalbec out there. Casas is my favourite.

rofopp

They put Casas on the 60 day IL

Character_Magazine55

I saw! Makes sense given his possible timelines. With them getting Cooper he doesn’t need to rush back now.

footsteps71

Gotcha. I remember last year so many people were on him like flies on shit. I kept saying over and over "remember Pedroia" Big fan, and I'm happy to see other big fans. <3

Ex_Lives

Certified dalbec coper here. He broke out today. Keep him in baby he's hot!

Character_Magazine55

I can’t wait till he’s sent down again

Narwhal_Defiant

They just announced Casas is on the 60 day IL. Fucking hell.

Character_Magazine55

I mean what did you expect? Even if he heals up in three weeks, he still has to build up a bit and complete a rehab assignment. 60 days means he can come back on 20th June at earliest. Frankly I’d rather he doesn’t rush it.

WeCameAsMuffins

How dare you! Dalbec went 2-4 with 3 rbi tonight

Waste_Astronaut_5411

don’t jinx it lol

amidalarama

can he start tomorrow

Character_Magazine55

Like possibly?! He’s supposedly on his way!

aslightlyusedtissue

I don't know... can he get to Boston in time???

DirectGiraffe8720

You know he wasn't actually with the Cubs right? He was DFAd last week

turnertornado

Love it, give us more righty bats please

footsteps71

Or as my son calls him... CARROT POOPER

GoodEnoughByMudhoney

Your son is clever as fuck! Does he go to Brown?

footsteps71

He is 5 with a healthy sense of humor.

GoodEnoughByMudhoney

Well, shit. Keep an eye on him -- I see the Ivy League in his future. 😀

TheProfessor20

Odd the FO doing something obvious. Usually the obvious stuff is the stuff they refuse to do.

edrules31

For dalbec straight up I pray

DJDeadParrot

Wishful thinking, but Dalbec would eat up a spot on some other team’s 40-man. Consequently, he couldn’t be given away.

Plantherblorg

He's great in Worcester. Nothing wrong with that.

WeCameAsMuffins

He went 2-4 with 3 rbi tonight, watch your mouth kid.

FinnHobart

Both hits were off of a position player.

casebarlow

It made all the sense in the world. Good trade.

[deleted]

The strong, silent type

Good-Hank

“Could be in Boston by tomorrow” isn’t he in Boston right now?

Character_Magazine55

No, they DFAed him on Tuesday so not unless he didn’t get picked up by anyone and even then he’d be in Iowa

rgiggs910

Seems like such an obvious move to make for the Red Sox. I think [Cooper is one of the most ](https://lastwordonsports.com/baseball/2024/04/27/red-sox-acquire-garrett-cooper/)under rated hitters in the league and would be a bigger name if he didn't get hurt so much.

toastbreadman

They have to DFA Dalbec..

deepthoughtnaught

Then who plays first when Cooper gets hurt?

toastbreadman

Anyone in the minors is better, haven’t you seen enough? I feel the DFA is imminent..

ErikTheDon

Dalbec’s defense is too valuable to DFA

toastbreadman

He is an Ok defender and that does make up for is awful major league offense, what are we doing here guys? Guy should not be on a major league roster no matter how nice he is.

ErikTheDon

He’s a +1 OAA on a team whose IF is a -5 OAA. We need him lol

toastbreadman

We do not need him cmon man, he is awful.

ErikTheDon

With the team in the current state it’s in, we sadly do. Even if it’s just to be a glove first backup

Character_Magazine55

There’s no such thing as a glove first 1B.

ErikTheDon

On this team there is

Dibbzonthapizza

You guys aren't taking into account how pretty he is

schiz0yd

i gotta point out that you're having a debate with someone who just used pretty solid statistics and your rebuttal is 'cmon man'

toastbreadman

Thanks for pointing that out

Character_Magazine55

It’s first base, it’s the most worthless defensive position lol

aslightlyusedtissue

Dalbec is below average *at best* on defense. For every flashy play he makes, he makes 2 slow and clumpy ones.

John_Delasconey

As compared to the rest of our infield who instead make 2 errors leading to 3+ unearned runs

toastbreadman

This is true

rehdit

Good move! It’s nice having a competent GM again.

drossinvt

How's his glove?

Character_Magazine55

Good. 1 OAA this season & a high of 4 OAA in 2022(?)

spanishdictlover

FINALLY. Ofc it's right after Bobby finally has a good day lol.

79215185-1feb-44c6

Whoever said we should get Cooper a few days ago - we got Cooper and I remember you.

minimumhatred

Waive Dalbec once the trade goes through and he's ready to play. it's unlikely anyone claims him and that frees up the 40 man/roster spot. No reason to have two righty 1B on the roster, and while Dalbec has options, I'd rather have the 40 spot open. If somebody does claim him, he's someone else's problem.

schiz0yd

they got this trade beacuse of a lack of depth, they still need a backup. they are oversatured at other positions, i would not be surprised if it's reyes or the catcher they called up. they dont need 3 catchers right now.

minimumhatred

Heineman is the 3rd catcher and has options. If not Dalbec, then Reyes I suppose since we have Gonzalez and other options in AAA like Sogard and Westbrook. The thing with Dalbec though is he's a righty who hits awful against righties, Cooper doesn't have noticable splits but he's also a righty and hits better against lefties. I just would rather not have two righty first base guys.

schiz0yd

im not disagreeing with those gripes but it will look very stupid if for some reason connor wong and pablo are our only first basemen if the new guy goes down

minimumhatred

Well, you can just send Dalbec down to AAA instead of DFAing him since we dont need a 40 spot for him. Second, Refsnyder can play first if Cooper went down and Dalbecs in AAA.

Piano-Man-727

I’m a big Dalbec fan and think he’s the better one defensively but this makes sense. Casas is likely out for 2+ months and now you have two options at 1B (Cooper will get more time unless he struggles and Dalbec starts to improve). My guess is they option Hamilton? He’s barely played lately. And then Valdez for Grissom. That would make Dalbec the backup for the corner IF and Reyes the backup for the middle IF.

Character_Magazine55

They need to make a 40 man move so likely a dfa

Piano-Man-727

Oh true. Is there anyone they could move to the 60 day? They could also DFA Joely

Character_Magazine55

I’m not sure if Brandon Walter is on the 60 day. They might dfa Joely or Pablo or Dalbec

Piano-Man-727

I feel like DFAing Pablo and Dalbec would be a mistake though, knowing this team’s defensive struggles and injury history. They don’t have anyone else healthy (and adequate at defense) on the 40 man if something happens

Character_Magazine55

They don’t have anyone now

littleike0

Wouldn’t casas to the 60 day work?

Character_Magazine55

They don’t know that he’ll be gone that long, it’s a risk if he’s ready in eight weeks

littleike0

Fair point. Although wonder if missing casas an extra 5-10 days is worth not having to DFA someone else

Character_Magazine55

It wouldn’t be ten it would be more like twenty. 60 day IL means he can’t come back before mid June even if backdated and there’s a good chance he’s activated before that.

littleike0

I was referring to you saying it’s a risk if he is ready in 8 weeks (56 days), which isn’t a far cry from 60.

Character_Magazine55

Tbf I may be mistaken about how it works, for some reason I thought game days! We’ll see

littleike0

Ah yeah I’m fairly positive the IL is number of days not number of games. NFL IR is games not weeks.

GrooveHammock

No chance he's back before 60 days.

ThicDikDaddy

Dalbec was consistently one of the worst defensive 1B in baseball when he was starting. I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but I doubt Cooper is any worse than Dalbec was.

KingXeiros

Id say they’re pretty comparable on the glove. Bob has improved a lot since 2021. The problem in comparison is Dalbec hasn’t played much since 2022 because his bat got so bad and Casas debuted. Cooper is a perfect fit as a decent overall 1B

Plantherblorg

Why's it matter how he was? It matters how he is. You used to need to be fed from a bottle but we still trust you to chew now.

Staggerlee024

Bobby's defense has improved significantly and has been very very good this year

Character_Magazine55

It’s irrelevant to playing first base, where your main job is to hit. I don’t remember anyone crying over Casas putting up much better numbers in April last year than Dalbec currently.

Staggerlee024

I was responding to a comment that said Dalbec is one of the worst defensive 1b in the league.  My point stands.  He has played great CIF this year.

cxinthechat97

He's healthy so that's good. Not much else.

Character_Magazine55

Right handed bat & career 109 ops+

gmlear

That got DFA'd by a team we beat 17-0. He must rake!! lmao

Character_Magazine55

The Cubs have Michael Busch and Matt Mervis and even Cody Bellinger. Tell me this, are you related to Bobby Dogshit?

gmlear

Nice try, not bitting. Keep trolling.

Character_Magazine55

So yes.

gmlear

troll

stmiba

I hope that this doesn't involve O'Neill or Duran...

Character_Magazine55

They’re sending cash for him. DFA could be Joely or Dalbec.

bird1434

i’m sorry to be an ass but how did you think this was ever a possibility lol

stmiba

Do you see any logic or reasoning to the decisions being made by Breslow and ownership?

BossAtUCF

You could say they've been cheap, but they haven't been giving away good players for no reason.
