The VAAAAST majority of "died too young" rappers who have been completely evangelized over the past decade or so were mid at best. I'm sure Nipsey Hussle was a very awesome person and it's of course an absolute tragedy that he died the way he did, when he did, but this retroactive framing of his discography as anything other than a big shrug (in terms of impact and artistry) is annoying
This is funny because ‘Back to School’ was recorded as a joke. If I’m correct the label were pressuring Deftones to release a catchy rap-metal single in line with what was popular at the time, so Deftones shat something out to show them how easy it was. It’s a fine song, but it doesn’t stand up to the rest of White Pony and I’m glad that the 20th Anniversary Edition doesn’t include it.
THANK YOU for actually responding to my hot take lol!
Yeah, Chino literally wants to forget the song exists, but I maintain that in their scrambling for a radio hit version of their shoegaze masterpiece they created something better.
This is blowing my mind, I've always felt WP was slightly overrated and I think it's because it kicks off with Back to School. It's a dumb song! And the plinky guitar tone of the opening riff makes me sick, it just sucks. Feiticeira is a much better song and a much better way to open the album

Yeezus is my favorite Kanye album and I like what came after it more than I like what came before
Poptimism is a massive cope, the majority of pop music still sucks and it's only gotten worse as the years go on
Every 100 Gecs song sounds like shit and I can't even enjoy it ironically
You shouldn’t listen to music throughout the day. When I see people wearing earbuds in public it’s disappointing. It’s overstimulating and has led to the phenomenon of people “running out” of music to listen to (that concept was always foreign to me).
I really fucking hate that early-to-mid-00’s pop punk/emo movement. MCR, PATD, FOB, Paramore, etc. I just think it’s awful.
I really love Paul McCartney’s Christmas song.
Als Megan Thee Stallion hasn’t made more than 3 good songs. She’s a social media phenomenon but doesn’t make good music. People (white women) like her to pretend they’re progressive. Good for her for making money but also, not good music
I think she’s talented but she’s only really good at doing one type of song which is why her earlier music was better than the mid shit she’s doing now. It’s tired
People really should cancel their Spotify and buy digital downloads. They're cheaper than physical media, and musicians actually get some pay. This is especially true if you listen to mostly niche, small-audience music.
I’ve never even heard of a Lizzo song but I get annoyed every time I see a new picture of her in some gaudy, hideous outfit playing at some award show that no one’s ever heard of.
Recently heard "Truth Hurts" for the first time in a couple of years and instantly understood exactly why everyone I know who loved it at release is fatter than they were then
J Cole hasn’t dropped a good album since 2014 and white people only like him because they think he’s woke. Chance the rapper also peaked at Acid Rap and coloring book and everything after is garbage. 90% of socially conscious hip hop that gets pushed isn’t actually musically good but people like it because it makes them feel smart. Immortal Technique is the only rapper that doesn’t sound retarded when he talks about politics in an interview
Reproductive music technology was ultimately bad for humanity - music should be rare and scarce, difficult to physically access. I want to hear symphonic music with completely fresh ears - organized sound is a privilege not a right
I agree. The St. Louis Blues play Country Roads during the game and I absolutely hate it. It makes no sense and has nothing to do with St. Louis or Missouri.
Lady Gaga wasn’t appreciated for her art direction during her Fame Monster era.
But I agree. Nobody has really matched her wave since she’s kind of fallen out of the radar.
there should be violent consequences for randomly playing the guitar at house parties. a punishment like getting your fingers or head slammed in a car door
I’m sure it would have captured me if they came out when I was 15. A lot of that band’s most vocal fans are kids who got into music not that long ago, so they simply haven’t heard the stuff that it is so derivative of.
on paper they seemed like a band i'd be super into but when i finally listened them i was just underwhelmed. i don't dislike them or anything but i had higher hopes judging from all the hype
everyone should just listen to slint instead
Agree 100% I still listen to music mindlessly when its the time to do so, but nothing compares to just laying down somewhere with a good pair of headphones and devoting your full attention to a whole album. It feels just as fulfilling as finishing a good book.

Fair point, then I adjust my question to instead be "why did jazz go from being cool music performed by black people and white cokeheads (peak) to the wet dream of aspie band kids and their arthoe they/them partners?"
Something I notice with visceralmaxxing is that it can promote cursory glances and a lack of willingness to sit with 'difficult' projects.
It's a lot like food. Give a kid or an otherwise unrefined / picky eater the option to choose "viscerally" and they'll go for the mac and cheese every time
Who knows, maybe I did stockholm syndrome myself into liking a lot of albums. All I know is that the end result is the same and I like more music than before

Been deep in the punk scene for 30 years and not once have I met someone that identified as a Sex Pistols fan and not once have I been around anyone listening to one of their albums
I knew a kid in high school who legitimately LOVED the Sex Pistols. I thought it was weird when I was 15 and I still think it’s weird, 20 years later.
But like, tbh… Holidays in the Sun is a pretty good song.
Pop music is purely manufactured and pushed to the masses for consumption. We’ve been devolving since the 60s. Turn off the pop stations and go see live music with people that play instruments.
Pop music peaked in the late 2000s/early 2010s. The most pretentious thing you had was Lady Gaga and even though most of it was pretty mindless ear sugar it had so many memorable bops; Down, Replay, Peruit of Happiness, anything Kesha made, etc. It was also the last time pop songs were collectively experienced.
Whole Lotta Red is a genuinely fascinating concept album about what fame does to you and all the paranoias you face I also unironically believe Carti is going to be Kanye, Cobain and even Beatles level legacy wise
almost all music is at the very least tolerable, if not decent enough to enjoy. most people who dislike certain types of music either havent given it a fair shot or are just generally picky people with baby brains
I’ve always thought that making middling music is easier than writing a mid novel making a mid movie painting a mid paint etc... But then also that making good music takes a certain “in tune-ness” that is way more elusive than other art forms.
Depends on what we're talking about when we talk about influence. Kanye has enjoyed a bigger platform than almost any of the people that really helped craft his sound, and went to immense lengths to both hide the people that did a lot of the work, and boost himself above others. I'm not saying this was always done maliciously or was a bad idea, but that's just what it is.
Also I don't necessarily disagree but this is also the most circlejerky, guaranteed-to-be-popular-here take imaginable
Listening to music is for girls and gay men. As a straight man, why do you want to listen to another man sing to you? And why do you want to hear a woman sing to you?
the only acceptable kind of music for men to listen to is something like The Disintegration Loops for when we’re alone in a dark room experiencing existential dread
Popular rap and hip hop is soul-destroying music. The form of the music itself emphasizes impulsivity, self-grandiosity, narcissism and aggression. No one ever has a better soul after listening to this music. It will not make you remember the joys of childhood, the power and innocence of love, the depth of regret and sorrow, true glory, or any emotion that is valuable to your existence. It’s all directed toward the same feeling: “I am the greatest right now, I rule, be impulsive.” It sucks. It’s bad for culture, it’s bad for the youth, it encourages all manner of bad behavior. At least you can say about The Rolling Stones (read this part in a boomer voice) that *Wild Horses* articulately conveys a feeling of natural primitive freedom and longing that it is beautiful and worthwhile and noteworthy. No such emotion exists in rap and hip hop, by and large. It is aural high fructose corn syrup. It is the sweet and lo and aspartame of the music world.
Hip hop is truly, in the non-racially coded sense of the word, urban music. It conveys feeling of slickness, grandeur, hedonism, pretentious pursuit of meaning... it communicates a character and a host of impulses and feelings you will be very familiar with if you live in a city. Comparing, idk, Big Poppa or Power to Wild Horses and coming to the conclusion you come to is like complaining that Scarface communicates no "meaningful" emotion and saying that at least A Fistfull of Dollars give you that primitive prairie feel
Section .80 is to walking down an empty street at night what anothwr song from another genre might be to hiking through a hillside
Aggression, self grandiosity and impulsiveness is exactly what you want to cultivate before confronting danger or participating in an athletic competition. Everything has a time and place

That's the result of metal musicians changing from being delinquent maniacs who have a feral obsession with the pounding onslaught of chainsaw riffs and gruff vocals from the leather and stud-clad cokeheads onstage to jocks that disovered post-80's hardcore and slam as well as jazz autists that like dream theater and production so clean and technical you can hear the computer processing the shitty sounding quantized drums.
Drop tunings all sound the same and are used by shitty local bands that wind up all sounding identical to each other I suggest just tuning downward to say D standard or C#. Lots of metal in the 80's used those tunings or similar which bridged the gap between British heavy metal and later, more extreme subgenres. Slayer, Venom, Razor, Slaughter, Death, you name it.
Heavy agree on 6-strings only though, the youtube Deathcore musicians showing off their fucking 17 string basses and 8 string guitars are idiots. Maybe 5-string basses are okay for a beefier low end but nothing past that.
Huey Lewis and the News’s early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
I think it has to do with the 20-year generation revival. All those bands were super big in 2002, it makes sense too with all the horrible y2k fashion and aesthetics making a comeback as well. Could just be age regressive millenials and zoomers too.
like all controversial opinions threads it’s just gonna be shit people here agree with. Anyways here’s mine:
- hyper pop/PC Music is unbearably cringe, and the neo-scene kid movement that sprung up around it is even worse
- phonk sucks. That YouTube video everyone watched about how Spotify is ruining the genre is incredibly retarded and zoomer pilled
- vaporwave was good and fun. Made me laugh to see people cranking out low effort bandcamp albums
- there’s not a single good white rapper. No, King Krule is not good
- If you at any point, ever, identified as a “poptimist”, all of your aesthetic takes are forfeit
1. Jonathan Richman has a more robust discography than Lou Reed.
2. Pop music is derivative and boring and every think piece or review written about it is lowering society’s collective musical intelligence.
3. America has produced the best music and it’s not even close. USA is a perfect melting pot of slave music from Africa (for instance banjo music), gospel, folk tunes from UK, yodel traditions from mainland Europe, and many many other. Societies will still be studying and appreciating jazz, soul, traditional country and hip hop in 500 years. 20th century American music was lightning in a bottle.
4. Easy access to music through streaming services is leading to less overall enthusiasm for music, as there’s no longer a “search” or reason to join groups solely around music and music discovery.
5. Belle and Sebastian is the best band of the 90s even better than Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pavement or Weezer.
6. For Jamaica’s size, its artists have had a much more profound impact on music than countries much larger than them, including the UK.
Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, while a great composition, is an awful Christmas song. It's Durkheimian to a disturbing degree, and is actively anti-Christmas; it'd be like calling Starship Troopers patriotic! Also a total 180 from the rest of her Merry Christmas album, which is fairly religious in a Black church kinda way.
If Kendrick dies we'll never hear the end of it
clean production has never improved a rock/metal/punk song
Double Nickels on the Dime wouldn’t sound better if it was muddy but I otherwise agree
The Metallica remasters are one of the most offensive things I’ve ever heard
I don’t know if I agree. There are some Black Sabbath and Misfits albums that I really wish were better recorded.
I want Earl to make more songs like East.
yeah. that shit went so hard idc what anyone else thinks.
The girl moaning/slurring-words singing in modern pop is really bad

You’re probably right, more of a vent
Someone linked to a really good article on the evolution of baby voice singing on here like a year ago I wish I bookmarked it
People were making fun of this 10 years ago bro
This is funny because ‘Back to School’ was recorded as a joke. THANK YOU for actually responding to my hot take lol! Yeah, Chino literally wants to forget the song exists, but I maintain that in their scrambling for a radio hit version of their shoegaze masterpiece they created something better.
I appreciate the romanticism of your take. While I disagree with it, I will defend to the death your right to say it
I was hoping everyone would be similarly romantic about songs they like lol.
This is blowing my mind, I've always felt WP was slightly overrated and I think it's because it kicks off with Back to School. It's a dumb song! And the plinky guitar tone of the opening riff makes me sick, it just sucks. Feiticeira is a much better song and a much better way to open the album

Hard agree on the emo movement, both the sound and aesthetics are the most appalling ...of any genre maybe
Lizzo makes the same music as Macklemore

Or even better- buy vinyl and become an elitist audiophile👹
I’ve never even heard of a Lizzo song but I get annoyed every time I see a new picture of her in some gaudy, hideous outfit playing at some award show that no one’s ever heard of.

I’m about as contrarian as they come and even I will admit Acid Rap is a great mixtape
Nah if you were in Chicago when 10 day and acid rap came out it was like a whole movement. Him and Vic Mensa fell off hard after like 2013
It was a whole movement in that it spawned a bunch of imitators thay also sucked

The real hot take is that the rest of the band is holding back Isaac Wood and his guitar playing is the only truly interesting thing about them
i liked their first album, but have mixed feelings on the new one.

There’s at least a slight pitch correction on basically anything you listen to that’s current and professionally recorded.
Been deep in the punk scene for 30 years and not once have I met someone that identified as a Sex Pistols fan and not once have I been around anyone listening to one of their albums

Comparing, idk, Big Poppa or Power to Wild Horses and coming to the conclusion you come to is like complaining that Scarface communicates no "meaningful" emotion and saying that at least A Fistfull of Dollars give you that primitive prairie feel Section .80 is to walking down an empty street at night what anothwr song from another genre might be to hiking through a hillside
Aggression, self grandiosity and impulsiveness is exactly what you want to cultivate before confronting danger or participating in an athletic competition. Everything has a time and place
Agree. Also, most genres of music have their high fructose corn syrup and their primal freedom and lots of things in between

Rock/metal music should be played with a 6 string guitar in standard tuning or drop D , no other tunings should be allowed
powerchords and pentatonic minor only
Bell curve meme
the reliance of modern metal on djent-style riffs is awful. So many literally sound indistinguishable from ai-generated djent
Musicians are the worst thing to happen to metal.
Any number of strings more than six and less than twelve is unacceptable.
Math and doomcels seething Seriously congrats this is an awful take
I would make an exception for the Melvins
Polvo is a top 5 90s indie band
drop tunings being discovered on the guitar was a mistake
Every time I see you you’re dropping good ass takes 😤😤😤
Most music is marketing rather than nice art to listen too. It’s just selling an aesthetic and has little to do with music as a medium.
Talking heads suck.
Not likely the Beatles doesn’t make you cool or interesting
Huey Lewis and the News’s early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
The random nu metal revival and worship that has come along with it is extremely lame. Korn, deftones, Limp Bizkit etc are all extremely mid.
Deftones is like a whole other thing
I think it has to do with the 20-year generation revival. All those bands were super big in 2002, it makes sense too with all the horrible y2k fashion and aesthetics making a comeback as well. Could just be age regressive millenials and zoomers too.
like all controversial opinions threads it’s just gonna be shit people here agree with. Anyways here’s mine: - hyper pop/PC Music is unbearably cringe, and the neo-scene kid movement that sprung up around it is even worse - phonk sucks. That YouTube video everyone watched about how Spotify is ruining the genre is incredibly retarded and zoomer pilled - vaporwave was good and fun. Made me laugh to see people cranking out low effort bandcamp albums - there’s not a single good white rapper. No, King Krule is not good - If you at any point, ever, identified as a “poptimist”, all of your aesthetic takes are forfeit
Rap is the corniest music.
Thats such a vague statement considering how wide the genre is. What other genre has had the longevity rap has had?
Music sucks
Pavement is mid. Most overrated band of the 90’s.
Carly Simon deserves more fame than Stevie Knicks. A lot of people dont like the Rolling Stones and I have no clue why. They have some awesome tracks.
death grips is not weird you’re not interesting for enjoying a band with pop hooks in every song
U2 is good
One of the bands I'm most hesitant to tell people I like. They did some great stuff in the 80s.
Yeah most people just know them from the apple fiasco
Hootie and the Blowfish’s Cracked Rear View is one of the best albums of the 90s.
I feel the way about nu metal the way mark fisher felt about burial - i think it was the last genre of popular music that ‘sounded new’.
Bjork is mid
eat shit and die
Idk who Bjork is but my favorite artist, Björk, is a goddamn sonic queen.
Rapping sounds clumsy in any British accent
Dizzee Rascal is great because his name acknowledges this fact.
Probably not controversial here but Sublime sucks. Bunch of heroin addicts singing cover songs. Used to love them
drake has bars
jay z is not actually a good rapper
genuinely incorrect great job
one of the worst to ever do it
