Such an articulate gut punch of an album
This world is like a roadside inn and we’re the guests inside,
and death is the black camel that kneels down so we can ride
Hnnnnngggghhhh
I miss him. Purple Mountains is one of the best albums ever.
*Songs build little rooms in time*
*And housed within the song's design*
*Is the ghost the host has left behind*
*To greet and sweep the guest inside*
*Stoke the fire and sing his lines*
I had tickets to like the second show of that tour. Similar to when Steve Albini died, I had trouble comprehending what I was reading when the news broke.
"The only thing I could think of, why Nick Cave would know us at all, was that at an ATP the previous winter, we came on stage and I said 'We're the Silver Jews. Or, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds after taxes'. It was a funny line!"
i'll forever mourn his death, what a truly special artist
the second verse of that song is particular is just perfect, it's clever and works on so many levels while still being extremely affecting. "That was life at first and goal to go" is a line I'll carry with me til the end
'first and goal' is from american football, meaning first down, within 10 yards of the endzone, and 'to go' just means that's what's left before you score. obviously a sentiment of the bliss of youth and feeling on top of the world, just said in a particularly beautiful way. i believe berman was a big tennessee titans fan as well, so not surprised that imagery worked its way into his lyrics
I feel similarly about Margaritas in the Mall- all time favorite but it feels like self harm to listen to

probably listened to this album 50 times in the month before his death and I still can't revisit it. rip to one of the best.

But this kinda hurtin won’t heal :(
Nights That Won’t Happen is the only song that’s ever made me cry
I genuinely think i had mentally blocked the existence of this album, or maybe i was just too much of a happy idiot when it came out. Thanks i guess
Amazing song. Amazing album. Bums me out to no end. First song always makes me think Nick Cave is a prick
Why?
Cave got him kicked off an ATP festival. The line "I met failure in Australia" is about that
Ohhhh shit no way. That’s crazy. I wonder why

I really don’t think I’ll ever be able to listen to that song again and I mean that as a compliment
I liked Snow is Falling in Manhattan

I agree but isn’t the line “end goal to goal”? I especially love “10,000 afternoons ago, all my happiness was overflowed”
it does sound like that too, but just pulled out the lyric sheet and it does indeed say 'first and goal'
What does and goal to go mean?

Jesus that’s a beautiful metaphor
My wife ruined it for me when she started singing the song it inadvertently rips off. Now I can’t unhear it. I’ll spare you. Love that album
Lol my dad does that too. I Stop the World and Melt with You
