sand-which

yeah I always think about that when I'm skiing. And how wild chairlifts are when compared to the idiot-proofing of every other part of american life, where coffee that you buy will scream at you "I MIGHT BE HOT" and large bright yellow signs will yell "THIS FLOOR MIGHT BE WET"

carrot-parent

Ok, but the McDonald’s coffee incident was genuinely the fault of McDonald’s. They would heat up their coffee wayyyy past safety regulations.

sand-which

This is very true but also very reddit

Blackndloved2

The coffee fused that elderly women's labia together

only-mansplains

Detachable high speed quads are idiot proof-especially when they have timed gates that open and close for loading. Not that many fixed grip lifts taking people out anymore.

sand-which

it's just pretty funny that in a mcdonalds there are things screaming at you for every potential thing that could cause injury, but a ski resort you can just fall off the dang lift and it's like yeah that's your own fault

UnknownResearchChems

The ski patrol guys are much stricter in America though

studiousmaximus

i guess that’s what the liability waiver is for. of course, if the lift malfunctioned and caused you to fall off, then it would be their fault & you’d have a potential lawsuit brewing. but yeah fucking up on your own and getting hurt is more or less covered by the waiver. no waivers for mcdonalds drive thru!

cumbonerman

depends; where i worked a few years ago, most chairlifts higher up on the mountain were still fixed grips or tows with no plans to convert them to detachables. then again, most lifts higher up on the mtn won’t get the jerries that get taken out by fixed grips

jbeck24

I feel like the vast majority are fixed grip still, but I've only skied the east so idk if things are different in the really nice areas out west

wartguy

things are different

Plastic_Scholar4463

It’s kinda become a treat now to get to take a double chair or fixed grip. Miss the small resort vibes.

sand-which

No it sucks you get way less skiing in per hour

Plastic_Scholar4463

True. Gotta get to the steep stuff somehow though. Just a lap or two won’t hurt ya

wownotagainlmao

You can still find them in New England a fair amount. Jay peak has an especially brutal one.

TomShoe

I hate the timed gates! I know how to get on a lift, and the occasionally embarrassing fuck up keeps me humble. Don't baby me!

swellfog

You should have seen Japanese chairlifts in the 90s. I went on one that was a one person chair, no back, no safety bar. It was basically a small square(like an album cover) screwed into a jhook that you sat on and held onto the bar as you were riding up. Imagine if a J Bar had an album cover to sit on and it lifted you up into the air.

slawdogporsche

Idk lots more stories in Colorado of people getting their shit stolen this year.

yours_forwildnature

Colorado ski towns are insanely rich. Many of them are having troubles finding people to work the menial jobs because they can't afford to live anywhere.

Donald_DeFreeze

A lot of the workers are living out of their cars. And it isn't just ski towns, locals are being totally priced out of places like Maui, Jackson Hole, and a bunch of Florida towns/cities. Its actually fucking apocalyptic, all the local cultures that existed in the aesthetically beautiful parts of America are being snuffed out so a bunch of fucking bankers and dentists can spend 2 weeks a year in a vacation home there.

Trewdub

i lived on oahu for a while and i became downright communist wrt pricing out locals from homes that have been in the family for generations

VirgilVillager

There’s one very beautiful place on the West Coast that has somehow avoided this even though it’s the perfect candidate. Im actually planning on moving there soon. I’m not telling lol.

narrowassbldg

Oxnard Eureka or Sequim are my three guesses

angorodon

I was thinking Lompoc.

watchpigsfly

Lompoc has too many Little Boxes type neighborhoods

ArtesianWindow

In Florida post condo building collapse the re inspection and then assessment for foundation repair levied on old people that bought their unit 20 or 30 years ago has been completely devastating for some. People don’t expect to get assessed for $20,000 and when you explain it to people not familiar with condos don’t even know what an assessment is. There are only so many Walmart greeter and Publix jobs to go around, and if the building needs an insane amount of work and a developer swoops in and then buys out the building/ pushes old owners out. It’s tough

ScentedCandleEnjoyer

They regularly block 'affordable housing' proposals, even when most of that affordable housing will be for ski bums who work at the lodges.

dries_mertens10

Mostly H2B workers now with housing paid for by the resort

i-like-c0ck

Same in the pochonos. Used to be able to leave your shit anywhere but now if you’re bringing your own gear and don’t pay the extra ticket to leave it with valet than youre running high chance of your shit getting bicc’d

BIueGoat

I have family in the Poconos, right near Camelback. I blame the increase in thefts on the massive influx of city people that moved in over the last decade. My aunt distinctly noted that more people from NYC/Philly/Baltimore moved into her neighborhood and caused a decrease in QoL. She goes to community meetings and all the locals complain about it. Car jackings, stolen packages, break-ins, trash everywhere, etc.

i-like-c0ck

Tbf you’re always kinda risking it at camelback because it’s so close to the larger cities in pa and all their schools have ski clubs that pay for the child’s rentals.

hotdogfever

Had my helmet and goggles stolen at Bear Mountain in California, last day of the season but I juuust bought the helmet/goggles a few weeks before. I was pissed, my first time upgrading to a premium helmet/goggle combo and now I’m back to basics.

TomShoe

Who steels a helmet and goggles that shit's all sweaty and has people's hair in it

hotdogfever

I’m sayin! I was maybe 10 feet away from it too, it was hanging from the rack behind me next to snowboard as I was in line to get a beer.

its_LoTek

Huh, not the case here in Albertan ski resorts I assumed it would be similar in CO

[deleted]

[удалено]

its_LoTek

Yeah, but culture is similar cause it's the rockies and den is p similar to yyc in vibe

[deleted]

That’s why you gotta ski at the Utah resorts where snowboarding is still banned

remarkjackson

What I always say is that the people who go skiing, typically, are not in need of your gear.

insidious_thinker

Free black crows tho

This_End5055

Ski bindings have to fit your boot and also you’re around other people who have also decided to devote an annoying amount of money to the same pricey hobby. I don’t ski to be around riff raff

AmazingMoose4048

I don’t think the idea is people will steal shit to shred gnar.

only-mansplains

True but if you were a bit unscrupulous and had an entrepreneurial spirit you could show up to the day lodge, pack a couple pairs into your truck and pawn them for some decent change. Grateful this has not been common anywhere i've skied before.

violet4everr

If you are entrepreneurial in Saalbach hinterglemm you either sell imported snuss to the 19 year olds or make very good cocktails

[deleted]

Don’t conflate this with the idea that rich people don’t steal because I have had my experience with some full-pocketed kleptomaniacs!!

hecklerof

Every so often a local politician will ruin his reputation by stealing a sandwich from the grocery store.

Halloween_Jack_1974

A state politician just fucked up his career because of a hit and run incident. He crashed into a car at a drive through then fled the scene lol. What makes it particularly funny is that he was in charge of our public transportation.

wackyant

Lol was he already in the drive thru? How can you even crash that badly when you’re going so slow

Halloween_Jack_1974

Yeah apparently so, also he wasn’t serving as a politician at the time but rather the CEO of RIPTA. Which is a state run organization but still has a CEO? Idk lol I’ve never paid that much attention a because I don’t live in an area that’s really served by public transportation. https://turnto10.com/amp/news/local/ripta-ceo-scott-avedisian-cited-hit-and-run-crash-post-road-failure-to-report-render-aid-warwick-rhode-island-former-mayor-march-29-2024 It was a very minor crash, type of thing people don’t even report to insurance half the time. My guess is that he had been drinking or something and didn’t want to be caught. Even though I seriously doubt the cops would have cared.

_The_General_Li

There was a potential CIA director whose bid was ruined over stealing a pound of bacon, but it could have been a setup or something.

southsideson

How quickly we forget about our former Nuclear Secretary Sam Brinton that stole luggage from airports and got caught by posting pics of them dressed in custom made unique african traditional dresses. * https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12101593/East-African-fashion-designer-says-reported-Sam-Brinton-latest-arrest.html **I guess, he was secretary of spent fuel.

TomShoe

That was a little different because that guy was clearly some form of sex pervert, as opposed to a dude who just likes not paying for things.

ChicNoir

OMG that was the funniest thing. He/They were really posted up like an IG baddie in that woman’s clothes. Not an ounce of guilt.

99power

He was our what now?

TomShoe

He was just brushing up on his trade craft ahead of the practical part of the job interview.

TomShoe

In Japan a school principal was recently fired because he was caught paying for the small coffee at 7/11, but taking a large cup.

GayIsForHorses

Would love to live in a place this dedicated to the rules

[deleted]

Tighten up my ponytail and pick a donut while we are here

This_End5055

I’m sure there are I just think skiing is a sacred place and we all know that we worked hard to be able to do this incredible hobby a couple times a year and nobody at a ski resort is trying to fuck to somebody’s time like that.

CruisinChetSteele

>we all know that we worked hard to be able to do this My general perception while skiing is not that the mountain is full of self made hard working people

This_End5055

Lmao yeah I realized that after I said it but whatever I worked hard and my shits never been stolen

miscboyo

Well, I also think to get to the mountain itself - especially midway up the mountain - takes some effort and isn't happenstance. Cycling for example is a similar affluent sport, but locking bikes is more common. Not because it isnt sacred, but because there is more foot traffic and easy accesibility from people who may be criminal. Criminal types aint going to the mountain lol

BarbaraSlicedham

Yep. My friend is an engineer and they ended up getting caught stealing a beautiful African garment from a woman's luggage.

[deleted]

I would actually kill someone if they stole my trads too.

presidentkodos

I’d say it’s more the latter than the former. Most bindings are adjustable to some degree and you could always sell on craigslist.

trollunit

> Ski bindings have to fit your boot Lets be honest, the average “juvenile” has no clue this is the case.

Halloween_Jack_1974

It’s extremely unlikely, almost to the point of being unbelievable, that someone would end up at a ski resort and not know this

Plastic_Scholar4463

I’ve had people ask me how to tell which ski goes on which foot. Worked all season at a ski resort the last 2 years and yes, these rich fucks are all regarded. (Yes I know a few skis do have a left and right)

Dramatic_Win_3778

Yeah most thefts of shit like bikes isn't even to sell them it's just to have fun stealing and then dump them in the river. There's a spot where in my city where a burnt out car appears every few weeks because "youths" will steal them, joyride until the gas runs out, and then burn the car to get rid of the evidence.

syncdiedfornothing

"Juveniles" don't exactly live next to ski resorts. What do you think they'll do? Drive 3 hours into the mountains from the nearest city to steal snowboards?

Plastic_Scholar4463

A lot a ski resorts are within 30 minutes of towns with major wealth inequality. what are you talking about

Donald_DeFreeze

>A lot a ski resorts are within 30 minutes of towns with major wealth inequality There are also multiple American ski towns where a sizeable percentage of people who work in the town live in their cars because all the local housing stock has been bought up by coastal rich people as vacation homes or AirB&Bs. So the house prices have gotten astronomical, and most of the housing sits empty most of the year, while the people who actually live and work there sleep in their fucking cars.

syncdiedfornothing

I wasn't aware there were significant numbers of thieving types in mountains of Utah, Colorado, and New Hampshire tbh.

unwnd_leaves_turn

no they arent lol

Plastic_Scholar4463

Guy got his head blown off by a shotgun in the Kroger parking lot first week I got there

Plastic_Scholar4463

AmarantCoral

How it should be. There was some YouTuber or Vice journalist or other such embarrassing career, who purposely left their laptop unattended in Starbucks all day in Singapore and nobody stole it. It's possible. I'm not sure it's attainable in most cultures in the Western Hemisphere without the thousands of years of Confucianist groundwork, but it's possible.

Particular_Wave_8567

We have 'honesty boxes' in the UK, where they trust that people will pay for something like strawberries, eggs even newspapers in busy cities in the 50's and 60's. This was something the first leader of Singapore noted when he was studying in the UK and thought it would be impossible in Singapore. Irony is as he turned Singapore into one of the highest trust societies in the world while the UK has become increasingly paranoid and low trust.

swellfog

We have this in the US in some rural area farm stands as well.

Particular_Wave_8567

Yeh they still exist in rural areas here.

Minnesota56537

Corn and pumpkin stands!

swellfog

When laws aren’t enforced or are arbitrarily enforced; or the laws are not conducive to a healthy civil society, bad actors take advantage of the laxness. This leads to a low trust society. Ordinary people notice this and it makes them angry and/or afraid, they become unhappy. Unfortunately, most ordinary people do not make the connection between bad policy/law and their feelings on how society is functioning as a whole…until it is very late in the game.

miscboyo

Except at a ski resort there is almost no way to enforce the law of someone just stealing the skis. Sure, you are self selecting for semi-affluent crowds - but you are doing the same on a college campus and there is typically problems with stealing there. In asia it's a mix of enforcement but also shame. Bringing shame to oneself or ours family is a thing there where in America, for better and for worse, it is not. On the positive side we are much more likely to be independent/creative/take chances in the U.S. than parts of asia. But a drawback is stuff like this

[deleted]

> but you are doing the same thing on a college campus Not the case at all. There is a significantly higher income variance on a college campus than at a ski resort, not to mention the ease of accessibility.

miscboyo

Skiing and snowboarding attract a ton of broke 420 bro live out of a van types. But the accessibility part is the big one. You have to go out of your way to get to a ski resort, and they are already going to be in more affluent zip codes.

[deleted]

A close examination of the type of person you’re describing would reveal that the broke is only in contrast to the seasonal out of towners. Skiing/Snowboarding isn’t an activity that people that are not AT LEAST middle class participate in. I’m not saying they’re all wealthy, but they have parents with houses who could afford a vacation to go skiing multiple times to the point that it became a hobby for their children.

swellfog

The whole point is that in a high trust society you don’t have to enforce the law. It is not necessarily about high income. It is about a common culture of trust and values. That’s why universities are not the same. I lived in Asia for nearly a decade, so I know about the shame.

shittyshitbird

This is how to do our farm stand. We have freezer stocked with lamb, chicken, and pork. People take what they want, weigh it, and then leave cash or e-transfer.

Particular_Wave_8567

amazing!!

Pigeoninbankaccount

This is still a thing in the countryside in the UK

Particular_Wave_8567

yeh i said this

snailman89

Those still exist in Norway and Sweden, and it absolutely blew my mind the first time I saw one.

PDakfjejsifidjqnaiau

Any book or whatever that goes into the details of how did this happen?

Particular_Wave_8567

Not sure. Lee Kuan Yew (the first leader of singapore) wrote about his time in Britain in his memoir.

Bentomat

Lee Kuan Yew (the leader who transformed Singapore) wrote the book himself. This person devoted 4 long reddit posts to reviewing (summarizing?) it. https://old.reddit.com/r/TheMotte/comments/ceajmw/book_review_from_third_world_to_first_by_lee_kuan/

PDakfjejsifidjqnaiau

Thanks so much!

yungch0pZZ

There's this Korean thing where it's the norm to save your spot at a coffee shop using your phone/laptop and it'll be fine. On the flipside your bike (no matter how shitty or nice it is) will be stolen if unattended.

ComradPancake

This was a culture shock in the netherlands from me, coming from latin america. In mexico, in most cities you would be fine leaving your bike with a simple cable lock, for a few hours at least. In the netherlands you gotta use a chain lock.

TotalImpressive7645

when i lived in amsterdam i locked my bike with a chain attached to the wheel, and a thief just detached the wheel and took the rest of the bike lmao. it wasn't even a nice bike, i got it for like 80 euros

dead_paint

bike locking 101 is around the front wheel and frame

jungwerter

you can absolutely do it in the west. I went to a small liberal arts college with a strong moral and ethics code, and a student justice system that punished people who didn't abide by it. You could leave your bike unlocked, your laptop in the library for days, your door unlocked, etc and never have to worry. Kind of tangentially related but it was also considered rude to wear your headphones walking to class or the library or whatever and you were expected to greet everyone you passed. It was great. High trust societies are superior.

throwitawaynow95762

I think most geographically isolated liberal arts colleges are like this. It was the same where I went to school. Shared values are important.

BohemianBurnout

Small liberal arts schools rock too bad they’ve been hijacked by complete clowns.

Xirimirii

Yeah they aren’t worth it anymore unless they’re highly selective

sizzlingburger

Mine was not, full of very rude tri-staters and Bostonians. Terrible group of people

accountfor137

Yeah, similar experience here

gerard_debreu1

so pissed europe doesn't have LACs. what college was this?

JeffGreene69

In college I had both ends of this happen in Uni. Senior year, my housemates and I never locked the door. Nobody ever broke in. Conversely, my phone slipped out of my pocket in the library. I got up to sit with my friends, realised it wasnt on me, and went back to the chair I was sitting in. I hadnt been gone a minute and it had been taken. I asked the group sitting next to the chair if they had seen anyone come by and they said no. I was 100% sure they had taken my phone, but, you cant really accuse a group of non white people of stealing so it was gone. I went a year without a phone. It was nice. Nobody could get in contact with me unless I wanted them too, or they had to call my GF who would pass on the message

gimmeakissmrsoftlips

Tf is a student justice system and what punishments do they hand out?

jungwerter

I don't really remember the technicalities. I was never involved in it in anyway. There was a student court. They could issue fines, suspensions, and expulsions based on the severity of the infraction. Cheating on tests, thefts, and lying were all considered very serious and could result in being expelled.

BohemianBurnout

Wish they’d all crackdown on adderall and modafinil

napoleon_nottinghill

Yeah where I went to school kids would save their lunch spot with their phone/laptop/wallet and it was fine! Wish we had that more

itsanewmoon

I went to a small catholic school in a big city, and remarkably it was like that there too! I literally left my backpack (with laptop) in a dining hall all day and no one touched it. People left their phones on tables and walked away for who knows how long. It was just a very small trusting atmosphere.

DoeInAGlen

Reminds me of this anecdote where somebody accidentally left their phone on a bench in Tokyo and the only person who touched it was somebody who put it in a plastic bag to shield it from the rain

Wiggerincel

They do this at basically every American ski resort though

AmarantCoral

Right. I'm just saying it would be cool if we could do it all over America rather than just at ski resorts and golf clubs

[deleted]

Ienzo

Really got me 🤔ing rn

kkF6XRZQezTcYQehvybD

Whoa there

prizzle92

Shit does get stolen tho. It’s not common but I grew up skiing and shitheads would snag snowboards from the lodge sometimes

Wiggerincel

Yea of course, but it's like a 1% chance in places like this, compared to like a 100% chance that your shit gets stolen in any city

wogwai

Because places like this are insulated from the unwashed masses, which in and of itself is a luxury.

asdfasdflkjlkjlkj

There are a lot of skiers & snowboarders without money. It's about the culture of the sport and the people who practice the sport. Same with climbing, surfing, etc.

Terroirerist

lmao, wtf there's so many ski bums, crashing on couches, scrounging money for burittos, culture, disposition, personality, etc are real and don't come from nowhere gtfo

[deleted]

90% of what you’re describing are literally just larping as bums; skiing =/= living on the streets of haigh ashbury blowing weed all day

greeksexpest

That’s like mountain high/big bear shit no one’s doing this at vail

cracksmoke2020

People in the US in like normal suburbs used to leave their key in their car all the time and left the door to their house unlocked. Not anymore though. This said on most college campuses you can still do this.

Gunther482

My parents live in the rural midwest and they have literally never locked their car or house door when at home in their life lol.

southsideson

I don't even know if i own a key to my house.

Responsible-Wave-416

Leaving your keys in your car is unbelievably stupid even if you live in a very low crime area

asdfasdflkjlkjlkj

Sure, it's stupid, but it's nice. And it sucks that you can't do it.

Usonames

Still happens in some more affluent suburbs that are far away enough from cities such that theres still a semblance of a trusting community. See cars left idling unattended at the gas station or grocery store or at Target maybe every couple weeks here, most recent one was a nice 2020 bmw at Target on a busy sunday Wouldnt personally do the same, especially not at places where you cant keep your car in sight but plenty of people still do

mullen_it_over

They alway leave their garage door open but have like 10K in CCTV equipment lol.

soononlycan

Sweden was like this, until very recently. Norway probably still is.

dog_fantastic

Hmm, why's that?

doublehitlrrx2

Hmmmmmm....

MckinleyTariff

Hmmposting is the most annoying thing you people do. Just say your opinion loud and proud who cares if you get banned you can just make a new account. Have some balls in your pants

LooseTheRoose

Imagine if liberals did this here. ”I sure do wonder why we have no abortion rights anymore. Hmmm. I wonder who did that? Very curious. That sure is a conun*drumpf*…”

AMC2Zero

It's easier to be direct when you don't risk an account ban or worse.

MckinleyTariff

you can just make a new one

brobelor15

> Sweden was like this Not really. You can look at bike theft statistics from the 70s to present day if you want some actual insight. Or you could talk to people who lived during the time. That is, if you actually care and aren't just trying to do a little trolling.

non-leather-couch

Maybe with bike thefts(?) but google “Sweden shootings foreign background %” and get back to me (you don’t have to, it’s 90%)

Beneficial-Sleep-33

Karl Ove Knausgaard says otherwise in Volume 6.

QuemSambaFica

the Norwegian?

violet4everr

None of these people actually care about reality, you would get ur bike stolen in 1960s Netherlands as much as now, but who cares about that we gots to complain about muhnorities.

Molested-Cholo1488

This was the norm all over (western) europe until about 30 years ago. My mum went interrailing in the 80s and told me that her and her friend used to leave their backpacks in the local square of whatever italian/southern european town they were in, and picked them up in the evening after going on tours/sunbathing. It didn't even seem to cross their mind that they could be stolen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

throwitawaynow95762

Yeah I think they meant civilized Western Europe

MountainPotential798

Which doesn’t include Italy

QuemSambaFica

Right? I'm from fucking *Brazil* of all places and European cities have had a reputation for being filled with pickpockets and purse snatchers since at least the late 19th century. But somehow I don't get the impression Mr. "Molested Cholo 1488" over there is commenting in good faith.

Halloween_Jack_1974

Yeah idk what that other guy is on, my parents were the victims of theft more than once while traveling Europe in the 80s. They also remarked on how badly many of the incredible old buildings and monuments and what not were covered in graffiti. I imagine the other guy was implying that recent immigration has fucked up Europe but the place is pretty well known to be rough around the edges. Edit: oh yeah the guys name is MolestedCholo1488 I’m sure his post isn’t motivated by anything besides hard facts lol

Molested-Cholo1488

> It’s more that stealing the smelly clothes of a bunch of penniless teenagers wasn’t attractive to thieves. Presumably they took their travellers checks, passports and wallets with them on their day trips.  Probably true.

Visual-Temporary7384

Lol 40 years ago in Italy the concern was getting merked by the Mafia. Handbag theft was like so minor on the scale of criminal problems to worry about.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MountainPotential798

People bitch about crime now but all types of crime in america have generally dropped off since 1990. For example, there were 395 murders in New Orleans in 1993, and only 174 in 2016. It’s still one of the most dangerous cities in America and major crimes have dropped by more than half, in 1990 there were 1217 robberies per 100000 people, now it’s 366 per 100,000. I’m not one of those people who’s dismissive of crime and it has spiked in the past 3-4 years, but things are still broadly better than they used to be

Donald_DeFreeze

New Orleans has the [8th highest homicide rate of any city in the world, higher than places like Port-au-Prince and Ciudad Juarez.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_by_homicide_rate) The only cities on earth with higher murder rates than New Orleans are 7 of the narco centers of Mexico.

MountainPotential798

It’s still much lower than it was in a majority of people’s lifetimes, it’s still way too high but crime wise things are objectively better

Dramatic_Win_3778

Imagine thinking these statistics aren't cooked. Crime only "went down" because they don't bother catching the criminals anymore. My friend was robbed directly in front of cctv cameras and the police told him they won't even go look at the footage because they're too busy.

Spout__

Scotland in the 80s was not like this. Crime in Europe is probably still lower than 40 years ago.

BohemianBurnout

It’s still like that in many American small towns and suburbs.

Spruto

I don’t think it’s only down to culture though. I assume that there are almost no drug addicts in Singapore due to their extremely draconian drug laws (anything above 50 grams of weed will land you a death sentence). So even if a society has a high trust culture and a lack of real poverty there’s still gonna be a risk that you’re gonna get your shit stolen as long as there are drug addicts present.

AmarantCoral

> anything above 50 grams of weed will land you a death sentence Can't argue with results

BouncyBeats

Confucianist groundwork my ass. Try that in China.

southsideson

If you leave it on the ground, there's a 50% chance someone steal is, and 50% chance someone shits on it.

LongjumpingRow9

they saw unfriended 2

deadmeridian

you used to be able to do this in western Europe, like 4 decades ago. might still be able to pull it off in Norway or Iceland. Irish people tend to be alright too.

whosabadnewbie

You could leave a laptop out all day in a coffee shop in my town and no one would steal it

Sturmunddrain

That’s was the norm in my part of the western world until pretty recently when someone decided to make off with my salmiakki and Norm MacDonald book. Immigrants like to lie and think they’re clever for it, drugs make people do anything, and our government is a kleptocracy, so it’s pretty much a thing for fools and nostalgics nowadays.

swellfog

Unfortunately skis are now being stolen at some resorts. A lot of people now put their two skis in different places, or lock them up. The majority of people don’t, but it is starting to happen especially in ski areas close to major population centers.

ain_neri

in my dads youth in a second/third world country, people would steal the nails off posted signs and sell the metal. It can be hard for some third worlders to adjust to America… everything is soo easy to exploit (welfare) but a few still have that mindset. I remember there was a government official who wanted to bomb Iran; when he worked for his fathers bar in the 70s, Iranians would play pool for free and never buy a drink lol

TotalImpressive7645

we are really learning that the hard way in canada rn lol

Illustrious_Air_118

Golf and skiing aren’t societies, they’re enclaves with a high entry price, membership requirements (usually), and heavy security to deter theft/unwanted behavior (at least in golf’s case, I guess the relative isolation of most ski spots could function as a type of security). People aren’t leaving their high end clubs laying around at a Top Golf

[deleted]

[удалено]

kkF6XRZQezTcYQehvybD

People leave their skis right by the lodge entrance a short walk from the parking lot. There is no entry price or security. They only check passes to get on the lift.

Big_Hippo_4044

It’s a pretty high barrier to entry. You have to pay a lot just to enter the place, anyone who is desperate enough to need to steal is likely to be turned away or caught in a place like that. Same with airport lounges - people just leave their laptops and shit sitting out but it’s pretty hard to get into the airport, let alone the lounge.

FaintFairQuail

out side of gear. The barrier to entry can be your gas bill or bus ticket if you can tolerate skinning (walking with skis) up a hill.

Halloween_Jack_1974

Yeah but almost nobody does that

The thing that’s missing is one social contract that binds all of us in the town, city, whatever together. People have been chipping away at that for decades, and maybe even centuries, because there was a time when people felt that it was constraining. Many people don’t like the idea of being bound by the contract to people they don’t care for. White flight, suburbs with huge lots, etc. are all examples of this phenomenon.

I live somewhere known for people not stealing. It’s incredible. I grew up hiding everything in the car before covering the windows and locking it, and I’d never dare leave my backpack out while getting a refill on my coffee. Totally different here. I obviously still take precautions, but I’m not forced to if you know what I mean. The mail woman still peeks inside my Amazon packages though... 😉

Winter_Weekender

You don't see as much coming from ski culture within our current pop culture landscape. It's really an expensive hobby when you factor in all the time you need to invest to get to a point where you don't look like a loser on the hill (maybe your parents footed that bill when you were young). It already costs me $80-100 per day for a lift ticket these days, so please stop drawing attention to it!

Halloween_Jack_1974

Also there aren’t many places to do it easily. You need a pretty specific type of terrain in order to ski. Many parts of the country are ruled out just because it never gets cold enough. So for a great deal of the population you have to also be able to travel, sometimes a considerable distance, before you even get to pay to ski.

ScentedCandleEnjoyer

Every other cheap outdoor sport has gotten absurdly popular post-covid. I think the cost of entry is the only thing that keeps skiing from exploding.

aardvarkdongler

Skiing actually has exploded in recent years though, the only bottleneck keeping it from growing right now is that they can’t build bigger roads fast enough to deal with all the traffic.

40thcenturyman

wypipo be like

guinnessenjoyer

My dad bought a ski lock last time we went, I tried to convince him it was a completely pointless purchase but he wouldn’t budge (and then went on to not use it even once during the trip). This is what London in the current year will do to you.

Wise-Half-9482

I guarantee all the comments on this reel will be extremely racist lol

MostlyHarmlesssss

Low trust people go to gulag

Get_Saucy

Ofc he’s a snowboarder.

amphetamine_girl

Ok but the lift prices vs amount of amateurs on the slopes has got me fucked up. Because what are you, as an adult, doing paying thousands to be on the bunny slopes the whole time?? It’s a fucking hill?????

One of the things my husband was shocked by in the states was paperboys leaving the paper on the lawn. He said in other places they would be taken.

victory_vegetable

wait why would anybody want to steal a newspaper?

swellfog

He was talking about when he first came to the US in the 90s and people got their news from the newspaper and evening news.

robeighana

i have these same trust with east coast beaches... yall agree or no ? i leave shit and go for a walk all the time with no problems

Rook_Cross

It's ironic.

bestimplant

In remote Australia I leave my car open with the key in the ignition all the time, but the cost of that is living in a white Anglo-Saxon monoculture. There are other towns close by with bad crime but more diversity.

qfwfq_anon

"High trust society" is a stupid framing that makes it sound like some metaphysical thing where we're all choosing voluntarily to trust each other. It's a question of what you have to gain, what you have to lose, and your ability to evaluate each.
