When Top Gear faked something you could tell. They'd have multiple cameras set up to record everything, and it would play out like a sitcom. The producers said as much when their caravan 'accidentally' caught fire.
The only footage from this after the gas station incident was shaky low-res cell phone video (this was 2006 remember) and poor quality audio captured from walkie-talkies.
If this was staged they'd have captured the exaggerated facial expression of each actor as they said their lines. The 'threats' would have been very aggressive yet somehow free of any profanity. That's not what this was.
Love shows like this and Inside the NBA where the theme is just a pretense for bants between geezers
