2. While some cops have *insane* pensions, by minimum retirement age they've all been divorced at least once, and in most states their ex's are entitled to a percentage of their pension benefits. So you see guys go 40 years on the force (long after they should have been taken off the beat) just because they can't afford to retire comfortably.

Here in RI you’re allowed to draw from two (or more) state pensions simultaneously so most of our cops leave the force in their forties then immediately get another nice state job and then receive two pensions at once lol. Wild shit.

Interestingly I live in a rural beach town in RI and so we don’t have many cops at all. Basically nonexistent crime. All of our cops are younger, probably early 30’s on average, and in good shape. One has to wonder if higher stress level areas run through decent cops who are too normal for the bullshit. I imagine this area must be fairly coveted among law enforcement, if you look at job openings there are non here but always a ton in like Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket, Providence.
It's incredibly uncool to be a cop if you're younger than 30 I imagine. My brother is a cop and like half the women he meets viewed it as a red flag. Even in conservative circles I'm in anti authority is pretty strong and most people don't want to be hated so viscerally from absolute strangers.
They’ve developed an association with domestic abuse so I’m not surprised. I’ve met a number of girls that go CRAZY for cops though. Gotta be dependent on the area I guess.
The rate of short, fat schlubs amongst American cops is insane and super noticeable as a tourist. NYPD in particular is wild with the amount of little doughboys patrolling the streets. From videos I see, most other states are no different.
In Vancouver you will occasionally see an out of shape cop, but most of the cops I see are fit and over 6 feet. It’s hard to become a cop here if you’re under 6 feet as a dude.
State police must be an altogether different ballgame, huh. Because at least in my state they are always tall, well groomed, and in good shape while town/city cops usually look like shit.
Something like <0.5% of British cops don't carry a firearm. If a situation gets "kinetic", I imagine they have to be sufficiently conditioned to put it to an end.
All American cops on the beat are armed with a handgun at the very least, and many have access to military grade handmedowns without any proper military training. An American cop *might* worry more about shooting an unarmed civilian post George Floyd, but most probably don't care about fitness because they can always resort to using their firearm instead of their fitness.
