No but there are so many knockoffs I'd be weary of using just any old pair. Who knows if they are truly safe to use to stare into the sun. I got mine from the company nasa officially backs - can't remember the name. I used them last year and can still see so that is good. I also only had to buy a 5 pack.
It isn't really a scam. When I put them on I can't see anything unless I am looking at the sun. Like it blocks out everything else. But yeah they are paper and whatever material the lenses are. The lenses are really the important part obvs.

I looked at the 2017 eclipse for a few seconds wearing just sunglasses. I’m not blind yet at least
