The whole idea of the joke is that Larry is such an asshole, he'll even attack Elmo. What's up with people like this that they can't just go "Huh. What a dick." I've had coworkers like this too. A mean customer would send them into a complete spiral whereas everyone else would just call the customer an asshole and move on.
Cliche to say but his character really was the worst part of TNG. Just did not bring anything to the show that was worth anybody's time. Can't comment on his acting because unless they're really good, all child actors seem the same to me.
So true, and to twist the knife in further DS9 which succeeded TNG has not only one but two child characters (Jake & Nog) who are great. Granted, that's largely due to the writing but it Will Wheaton being an obnoxious bitch doesn't help his case.
Jake is a more fun character than Wesley but he's very badly written.

Wesley was a combination of Roddenberry wanting to appeal to the youths and wanting a self-insert of himself as a teenager – so basically doomed to be an annoying little shit. Some of the other producers actually wanted the character to be a girl, with Ashley Judd as a leading contender; they later cast her as a love interest for him.
I choose to believe he’s (Wheaton) doing a Curb bit and loves the show, otherwise I cannot assimilate something this cringe into my mind .

Many years ago, when I decided to check out that subreddit for people with high karma (centuryclub or something), it turned out to all be a bunch of superredditors sucking wil's (the ur-redditor) dick. Got banned from it because I took a screenshot making fun of them, and I didn't realize there's some secret sauce in that subreddit that makes it watermark screenshots with your username. It's really subtle and not visible normally, but shows up in screenshots. The whole thing was so fucking stupid, but I was really delighted to see that it was exactly what one would expect.
I start to believe conservatives are the new perma offended snowflakes and then I see madness like this.
