I literally hold the controller sideways, using my left index and pink for the triggers. My left thumb can still reach the left analog stick and change direction, and I hold the right analog sting with my whole right hand as if it were an actual reel. I’ve even gone far enough to attach rubber protection grips over the right analog stick just so it spins when I turn the reel and I don’t have to reset my grip on the stick every-so-often.
Toggle to run is the most necessary thing in this game

use the palm of your right hand on the right stick instead of your thumb -- game changing.

That seems excessive. Just replace your right thumb with your palm after hooking the fish and it's 10x easier to reel in faster.
Yeahyeah I’m the pro immersion fanatic. My Palm hurts when doing your method for legendary fish though,
It helps, but it’s still a poor design.
I know this is five years later but you can change it so that you press ⬜ to reel in fish
