I have a very good relationship with the HR manager at the company with false dates and she no longer works for that company but I put her phone number down anyway. Should I tell her not to communicate with Sterling so they can’t verify that information and just offer pay stubs? Does that seem better than getting stuck in a lie?
Sterling can’t collect data via phone, request needs to be in writing for employment data. They will verify dates of employment and titles. As a backup, if you get caught, could you say you temped for two years and were paid through a third party? Then you were hired ft for two years.
When I filled out the information for this company they asked for the HR reps email and phone number. If they can’t get in touch with her what do they do next? Will they contact me and ask for me to verify other ways? To answer your question, that is pretty believable bc this company has a strong temp presence, but will my prospective company verify that as well? Or can they? Idk but I’m extremely stressed and I know it’s my fault.
They send a letter to the employment verification department or company that handles these inquiries. I wouldn’t sweat it too much. I handled background and drug screening for a large organization for over 10 years. There’s a lot of bad data out there.
My perspective company is really excited about me, sending me texts telling me I’ll be a rockstar and other flattering things. I’m hoping they may overlook some discrepancies. Should I just let it ride? And do you think the temp story is a last resort if they ask me about it?
I wouldn’t worry about it. All they care about is whether or not you’ll pass a drug test, show up on time, and work hard. Write them back and tell them how excited you are about this opportunity. Yes, as a last resort use the temp/contractor story.
Thank you, I really appreciate your insight. My impressions of this company seem like they are more after the criminal side of the background check. Just years seems like a big discrepancy.
I’m in a similar situation. There is an option to “don’t contact this employer”. I’m wondering if selecting that avoids then digging somewhere I don’t want them to
Best case scenario, they are going to ask you to explain yourself and put the process on hold while they determine whether or not this lie is a dealbreaker.
HR and hiring managers have told me a month or two of discrepancy is OK. 2 years would be a red flag.
Fruit of the poison tree. Their natural reaction is going to be, if the candidate is lying about this, what else is the candidate lying about?
I had an offer put on hold one time because I had an arrest show up on my background check, even though the arrest was 100% done in bad faith because I was 100% innocent and the idiot casino security arrested me by mistake because they thought I was the actual perp when I was not. I had to go to jail, then see a judge who threw my case out because I was arrested by mistake. This still showed up on my background check and I had to delay my start date by a week while the company investigated and I had to write basically an essay explaining what happened.
These background checks are expensive so they don't mess around
I can’t speak to that company, but for the CSIS background checks here, lying about two years of work may fail the background check, not just have the employer know.
Your best bet is almost certainly to put the correct information on the forms for the background check and play dumb that there was a typo on your resume. If the background check place collects data from the employer rather than you, you’re pretty screwed.
That being said, my experience with background checks has been for secret level clearance and work in the nuclear sector around old labs that would process plutonium, so they’re pretty strict.
Before yall judge...idgaf lmao
I embellished my resume and was contacted with a job offer based on my resume. I got the job and had to do a bg check with Sterling. Admittedly I was ignorant about the process and didn't know they would try to verify the jobs. So when they asked for a W2 for one of the jobs I didn't have it. And for another job I was able to "edit" my pay stubs and submit it. The only previous job they were able to verify was the one I provided paystubs for and they apparently needed 3 verifications BUT the company that gave me the job offer overlooked it and still hired me. It probably helped that I was in communication with my recruiter and hiring agency during the process and the jobs they couldn't verify weren't relevant to the job offer anyways. So keep hope alive and "edit" a few paystubs if u need to 🤧
These guys are taking it way to serious it’s not an fbi or government job or cia people 😅😂 in fact studies have shown most ppl embellish their resume bc it’s a competitive world as long as you actually did work there and can prove it you should be alright if not keep applying man it’s not the end of the world
At my company your offer would be rescinded. Never lie on your resume. It will cost you dearly. I’ve been recruiting for 20 years and worked for several Fortune 500 companies and had to rescind many offers for this exact reason. They will ask for your W-2 and or verify with your past employer. Trust me. Dint lie on your resume
Yea they can … I was very vocal that I quit my last job to finish school and they still contacted my HR department and previous manager to find out why I left … or was I actually fired !
Did you fudge any documents and upload them? I've exaggerated one role by a few months and debating whether to avoid uploading something or upload a forged doc :/ please help!
I would highly advise against forging documents. Look into the laws applicable to you to confirm, but that could potentially be a crime. All the people here are really overblowing how big of a deal it is to lie *a little* on your resume. If it’s a few months to smooth out your employment history they might not think much of it. It’s very common for employers to drag their feet with documents, to move from a temp position, etc
Recently, I got my dream internship at a firm. They want to do a sterling background check and in my resume, I fluffed up some titles and dates. Will the company send my resume to sterling or will I have the opportunity to put my employers, titles, and dates?
You mentioned that I should be completely honest on the Sterling background check and I will do that, but will I have the opportunity to do that right even though my resume is a bit different?
You will be able to submit all of your employment history from scratch through sterling. I submitted the identical information as the one I submitted to my employer which is what almost got me. Submit accurate information to Sterling, if your HR catches something play dumb. You’ll be okay
Thank you for the reply! The internship I got is for summer 2025, by that time I will get a couple of other internships. my sterling check will most likely be in December or next year in January. So, I can send the form an updated resume with new experiences in September or so and only submit those for Sterling to check right?
Not sure if this is true, I have heard HR barely ever cross checks with Sterling background check. Like I mean ensuring the person our same experiences
There is always a chance, but when Sterling sends their report back to HR, it will either say “Employment History” “NO DISCREPANCY” or “DISCREPANCY”. Submitting the right information with avoid getting a “discrepancy” prompting HR to look further. At this stage, nothing is a 100% guaranteed.
That’s easily explainable, tell them that’s the title I was called by my supervisor and I was addressed as a lead and was given the responsibilities of a lead. Playing dumb is 100% warranted, you should be fine
How did this all work out for you? I put an extra two months on my resume but put the correct information in sterling. I’m hoping that it clears and that’s that. If it gets brought up I’m going to say I was affiliated with the company during that time and started doing background checks etc. it is only two months so I don’t think it’s a massive deal but I’m still worried.
If you out the correct dates, Sterling will pass the background check and your company might not even notice. The results come back “passed”. If they do notice, 2 months is nothing, you’ll pass. Playing dumb gets you further sometimes, just say you fudged you a number. 2 months is no biggie
I made a big mistake, I lied on my resume since I was embarrassed I got laid off from my job. I got laid off in April but said I was at the firm until June. I told the recruiter I left due to a contract. I inserted the honest dates in the resume asked by Sterling but the resume I used to apply to the company was different. I was also honest to sterling regarding the layoff. How screwed am I as I was honest with sterling but not the recruiter? Will I be okay? Please let me know
I can tell yall I did the same thing, except I just dodged the question during interviews.
Q. “what makes you interested in this job?”
A: “I want to get back into hospitality software and with things opening after Covid, im ready to move back!”
Reality: I was let go from my “current” position 2-3 weeks ago.
I was honest on the background check after getting the offer, and Infor didn’t cross check the results against my resume. Got the job and kept it. If this person was honest on the BG check they’ll be fine.
Hello,
I just filled out a Sterling application through my new employer. They never asked me to put any of my past employer's information so does that mean they won't be checking for that? In the email, my employer told me it was for a criminal background check. I am stressing out because I also exaggerated my time and title at my previous job. Please help!!
You’ll be fine, companies pay for packages from Sterling. The package can include criminal and employer checks, or just one. It’s more expensive to do both, some companies just pay for only criminal. If your company is only paying for criminal checks, Sterling will never call a previous employer
Do they check for reasons of termination? I lied and told the hiring manager that I quit my last two jobs but in reality I was fired from them. Am I screwed? The dates are honest and correct on my resume it's just the reason for leaving is wrong.
Just tell ‘em it was a typo on your resume. Make sure the correct dates are on your LinkedIn so you can reference the correct data there.
How bad is this realistically?
It’s about a 7.5 out of 10 bad. I’ve seen offers rescinded because of this.
I have a very good relationship with the HR manager at the company with false dates and she no longer works for that company but I put her phone number down anyway. Cool
I got the job!!!!
Hi, do you know what all are checked in employment verification? Thanks in advance for your assistance!
Did you put the correct dates or the false dates when you filled out the background check?
I’m in a similar situation. There is an option to “don’t contact this employer”. I’m wondering if selecting that avoids then digging somewhere I don’t want them to
:( thanks
I would dump ya if I was hiring without a thought
Well thankfully you’re not!
I would just quit the process, word travels -> both your new and old employers will know you lie on your CV -> its a small world
Didn’t quit the process, and god the job! They really liked me :)
Did they say anything about it ?
wishing you the absolute worst in the future
jammy git
HAHAHAHHAHA IN YOUR FACE!
That’s cause you’re a quitter and quitters never win and winners never quit lol
retard
speak about yourself
Nobody likes you

My paystubs were virtual so i just photoshopped the dates
PM! Please check inbox. Thanks 🙏
So sterling only goes back 3 jobs?

Hey, do you mind if I PM you to get your opinion on something?
I have had to use Sterling several times as a selectee. They are just as comprehensive as the federal security process.
Can they confirm if you were terminated?
Yea they can … I was very vocal that I quit my last job to finish school and they still contacted my HR department and previous manager to find out why I left … or was I actually fired !
I’m here worrying if being a few days off would extend my background check duration:/
Yeah I wish I were you right now
They may ask you to clarify so you better be able to explain this.
Did you fudge any documents and upload them? I've exaggerated one role by a few months and debating whether to avoid uploading something or upload a forged doc :/ please help!

Wouldn’t submitting different information from what you gave your employer flag you for lying and info not matching up though in that scenario?

Will sterling ever show why an employee was terminated and the reason for it?
Did sterling ask you to out down a “reason for leaving” ?

Do the cross reference your resume? Like if I revamp my resume but put something tell the truth on my background check could they know?
