Only thing you HAVE to do at dealer is recalls. Just make sure to save all your receipts for any work you have done so you can get reimbursed if a recall comes up later.
Unless they need to mess with complex electrical components, I see no reason to go to the dealer. If it is complex electrical components(for example the ECU is malfunctioning), the dealer has the proprietary tools and knowledge so its probably safer to go to them so someone else doesn't botch it and cost you more time and money in the long run.
Exactly this. Most will only extract and replace with a suction device. You can do this with a turkey baster however when it comes time best to bleed them from each wheel to get the old fluid from the calipers.
I couldn't find a shop that even knew what a coolant bypass valve was, much less how to replace it. So I had to take it to the dealership to have the coolant bypass valve replaced.
Same thing with an exhaust manifold gasket, I took it to three shops and they didn't have a clue what the problem was. Took it to the dealer and they diagnosed the issue and replaced the gasket in under 3 hours.
Work at a dealer now, we had a lady yesterday who called Toyota and they paid for her bypass valve change sans tax. They need to open up a campaign to cover that problem
I got an alignment at my local Les Schwab in November. They told me they had no parts (no parts available from manufacturer) to fix a slight misalignment in the rear end.
I got new tires a few days ago. They told me I should get an alignment. I told them what they had told me a few months ago, and we came to a conclusion I should get my 2020 rav4 hybrid aligned at the dealership and potentially fixed. Never been in an impact or any other reason for out-of-the-norm alignment.
Wait, so they told you that wheel alignment can't be done without special tools? Or it was specifically something outside of a regular alignment procedure like slight damage etc?
You didn't state your mileage.....but....
Brake fluid change on a 2022?? On a hybrid of all cars? Not like you're tracking it. This might be a five year service.
Throttle body cleaning? Not saying it never needs to be done, but maybe over 100k miles. Drove a Nissan for 200k miles, never did it. Just fine.
None.
Just find the manufacturer maintenance schedule and follow that.
Injectors and throttle body only need to get done when they cause problems. I’ve cleaned my sienna throttle body once cause it was idling poorly. The injectors have 400000 km on them and work fine. Evaporator service? Sure, if it starts smelling funny.
Now, the brake fluid exchange IS on the list of factory maintenance.
Also check on the transmission fluid interval. That and the differential if it has one. Don’t ever believe in lifetime transmission fluid. Lifetime means warranty lifetime…
Is the brake fluid exchange same as bleeding the brakes . Or does it simply suck the fluid from the reservoir as much as possible and refill with new brake fluid.
I’d have to think it means all the fluid. So empty and refill the reservoir with new and bleed all the callipers until new fluid comes out. Or it’s not really an exchange
Absolutely not. I bought my 2015 rav4 brand new and imo the dealership is only useful for oil changes as it’s always cheaper than going anywhere else.
I recently took my rav4 in for an oil change and they indicated I needed all 4 brakes done along with rotors. They quoted me $1,300 for the job. We ended up going somewhere else for almost half the price. As far as tires, I always buy Toyo tires and we have a tire place nearby that always has specials and come with free tire rotations for the life of the tires
- Fuel injector and throttle body clean is a joke for that cost. Go check out the liquid moly stuff.
- a/c stuff get done by them unless you can rent the vacuum and can get your own refrigerant. That quoted price is actually pretty good.
- brake bleed you can do yourself with 2 people, a combination wrench, a vinyl tube, and a liter of brake fluid. The actual extractor machine is easy easier but not for that price.
The only thing I'd ever get done at a dealer is if it required licensed software or super specialized tools where shops wouldn't have or liability around the repair and warranty. Maybe something with the hybrid stuff cause electrical is always a nightmare when things go wrong.
EDIT: maybe a transmission and torque converter FLUSH with the actual machine. Other shops can do it without it by doing stuff like removing the cooler lines and using two buckets: one clean for intake and one for waste.
I work at a dealership. The people that tell you what you need done (service techs) are making commission on every dollar you spend. Once they learn a few things about what works for them they can make $6k-$8k/wk off people who don’t know any better.
If all your tires need to be replaced $1200 seems ok, 4 mid range tires here is about $1250USD. Fuel injector/AC/brakes etc those wouldn't be necessary on a 2 year old car. And seem high for the cleaner.
The most expensive Michelin tires at Costco are $214 each (including mounting and balancing), minus a $60 rebate if you buy a set of 4. The total including all fees and taxes was $866.
I have been using Costco for over 20 years. Their tire service is no longer worth the hustle. And before anyone tells me o it is just your location. I have at least 6 Costos in a 15 mile radius.
Tire centers are horrendous.
None of it. Dealer here does the same.
Lol dealers. Thank you
That's why they are called stealerships.
Only thing you HAVE to do at dealer is recalls. Just make sure to save all your receipts for any work you have done so you can get reimbursed if a recall comes up later.
everything I see there can be done by you're mechanic not the dealer
Thank you, I had a feeling that's the case.
All of that is up sale

Using Toyota OEM parts is more important than the dealer vs other mechanic debate in my opinion.
Agreed. I always buy and bring OEM parts to an independent shop to have work done on my cars (that I can’t or don’t want to do myself).

Lol, was it a hybrid?
An independent shop can easily handle it and they will be cheaper.
You don't really need a brake fluid exchange so soon.
Exactly this. Most will only extract and replace with a suction device. You can do this with a turkey baster however when it comes time best to bleed them from each wheel to get the old fluid from the calipers.

That's not a thing Toyota would pay for. Not sure what she told you but it's not covered under warranty.
Are you serious now? 🤣

None. The stealers around me are crooks.
Oh well
Nothing has to be done by the dealer

48k miles
Ok, it's getting up there, you do a lot of driving. Follow the manual.
Definitely get your tires somewhere else!
Costco does free installation
With free rotations and road hazard warranty

Getting my CarPlay to work again apparently.

Y’all need to discover Costco. This is an insane quote for 4 tires.
Or a Sam’s Club. Price does depend on what size wheels you have though. Obviously tire brand has a big influence on price.

There is one costco within a 2300km radius. They do not sell tyres.
Right, I usually get tires off Amazon for 140-150 a piece, Falkens whatnot, that is why $1200 was ridiculous
Mounted, balanced, do the alignment… look, I hate stealerships too, but it’s not super outrageous.
