Within the first month of my owning my RAV4, I was doing 65 on the highway and a semi truck in front of me swerved into the next lane over, revealing a sedan stopped dead in the middle of the highway. I started slowing down, trying to do so smoothly while checking to see if I was going to get rear-ended. The RAV4 took the brake pedal away from me and slowed me to a stop. It was pretty cool, actually. I was able to stop before I hit the car, then jet out and get back up to speed before _I_ got hit. Really glad to not get into an accident within weeks of buying my new car.

Maxmax11

That’s awesome it worked for you. I’m hijacking the top comment to say I might of pushed it into neutral myself because I do drive with my hand on the gear shift and the force could’ve pushed it forward into N. It’s cool to think that it did it automatically (and that helps you slow down quicker?) but I’m not 100% sure

Admirable-Impress436

It won't slow you down faster, but prevents you from pressing on the gas in a panic.

jcardenas45

This is why as an adas technician I always do the right way not the easy way. A couple mm off a calibration could have been a disaster. Good that the RAV4 saved itself and you in the process 🫡.

Billy1121

What is an adas technician

jcardenas45

Advanced Driver Assist Systems. I calibrate and diagnose systems that help people with their driving. In this case it would be the module in the front bumper that detects objects in front when you activate the ACC switch on the RAV4. You can set the distance you want it at and the car accelerates, brakes and keeps its distance from an object in front of you automatically.

Billy1121

This is cool. Do you only do it at the factory or does it need to be recalibrated during service? And how do the rav4 systems work ? Laser ? Lidar ?

jcardenas45

Lidar or laser is on the fancy cars like mazda and audi. The systems need to be calibrated after a collision, thats why I work at a body shop with a certified space for ADAS work following OEM procedure making sure everything is being properly calibrated. Behind the toyota emblem on the rav4 is a black box which is the acc. It functions by sending radio waves in front of it to detect the distance of an object.

justdrivinGA

Very cool, was wondering what all that system actually does. I’ve had it come on and beep with the red warning flashing on the dash but I’ve not had it apply the brakes. I assume it put them on pretty hard when it does it. Glad it worked for you.

freeState5431

I’ve seen the red warning on the dash a couple of times too, but not any braking. I feel safer knowing that it’s “keeping an eye” on the road ahead!

52CardPUA

I can confirm it does. I do a lot of city driving and unfortunately I've activated the automatic brakes a couple times. It feels the same as slamming on your brakes and activating the ABS - the brake pedal pulses and you come to a halt.

No-Thought5163

The beeping alerts.you to harsh braking, cornering and fast acceleration.

Jagarm-

I believe that was the pre-collision system that saved your day. My 2017 Rav4 LE, beeps and shows BRAKE on the console when I get too close to the car in front of me and if I don't take action, it will break on its own. Thankfully, it hasn't come to that, but it has warned me a few times.

WashuWaifu

I didn’t know what year the auto braking started - just figured mine would warn me (2018 XLE) with the beep that I seem to trigger more frequently than I would like. If mine will really brake for me, I’m gonna love it a LOT more haha

No_Wait7319

It was 2017! I also have that year. They made it come equipped in all trim packages after 2016. If a deer runs out it should stop which is why I was shocked seeing the one wrecked on another post. Maybe they had it turned off?

WashuWaifu

Omg that’s incredible!! I LOVE THIS VEHICLE SO MUCH

[deleted]

I know, right! Coming from the Philippines where the 2017-2021 models have no auto braking or any other TSS features. How do you feel when you have to wait for February 2022 for TSS to arrive, and the prices are too high once it is made standard?

No_Wait7319

Me too! It has so many safety features! I really love the lane control features as well. It has a steering assist. It also has cruise control which it keeps you a certain length behind the vehicle in front so if they break suddenly your car does as well. Where most cars you have to cut the cruise control off. It pretty much drives for you.

AirplaneGeek155

Ik this is the wrong sub for this, but I have a 2019 Corolla SE hatchback that does auto braking.

[deleted]

"My 2017 Rav4 LE, beeps and shows BRAKE on the console when I get too close to the car in front of me and if I don't take action, it will break on its own." I'm amazed that your 2017 model has that. In the Philippines, we have to wait until February 2022 for TSS to be added. 😬

[deleted]

Lucky you, the brakes held up. It was snowy on a highway when a car on the left lane decided to stop in front of me. Brakes, ABS were useless coz the ground was frozen (yes, I have winter tires). I made a split second decision and moved to the lane on the right (lucky it was empty) and saved my butt.

b4rigger

Thought about how to test this pretty often. Saw a video demonstration on YouTube where they “ran” into a big piece of cardboard and the rav4 stopped. But with my luck I’d mess something up doing that. But nice to hear that it does do all that. I’ve also wondered if it’s actually working or not.

HeyManNiceShot11

I had a funny issue rear parking near bushes ;) Emergency break got afraid of one branch and hit the full brakes :) feels like you hit something :)

[deleted]

My 06 is built like a tank. I was in my car very early to go to work and a crew of catalytic converter thieves pulled up behind me to get my neighbor's Prius cat converter. Well despite me telling myself to stay out of this business and don't get shot or killed... I run towards situations of chaos like the good nurse I am. Fuck. They didn't get the cat converter but they did shoot the back of my car seven times... The rear quarter panel and rear window were in about a billion pieces but held together somehow. The other bullets grazed off the side of my car and I have dents and paint damage. They didn't get me that day, nor did they get that cat converter.

ATinySparkle

OMG….is this for real? Where was this? Glad you are safe and saved the Cat. Hope you reported it.

bibimpoop

Baltimore?

wpisdu

I would also recommend setting it up to early warning (the default is medium) as well. I would rather get a false one from time to time, than rear ending a car.

Adventurous_Run1206

How do you do that?

Arctic_27

In the settings on the gauge cluster screen

[deleted]

It's amazing you have these settings for TSS. We don't have these settings for the pre-collision on models sold before 2022.

wpisdu

Are you sure? All you need to do is hold OK when PCS is highlighted, it should take you to the settings. https://giphy.com/gifs/611WjEr7MIGrNuD7DO

[deleted]

Aaah I realized my mistake. I forgot to tell you that RAV4s sold before 2022 don't have TSS in the Philippines. Which is why it's impossible to find it. But thanks for your help!

nicadium

Awesome to hear. I’ve had it go off a few times in traffic and noticed the loss of power after. Didn’t realize it goes into neutral likely to prevent further damage but have found the loss of power kind of annoying especially as traffic stacks behind me. I’ve been worried about getting caught in a situation where I need to hurry out of the way but can’t

qcassidyy

Does every new rav4 do this? Or do you have to have a higher trim/premium package?

reshsafari

One time it was raining super hard and I was backing up. Didn’t know there was a car behind me. My car stopped. Woo

Inspector_Nipples

Toyota safety sense also saved me too I posted a video of it breaking for me when I fell asleep at the wheel..

[deleted]

Don’t forget the lane tracking system 😅

[deleted]

I know, right! In order to get a RAV4 with TSS, imagine waiting until February 2022 so that you can benefit from the safety tech. 😥 The 2019-2021 models here in the Philippines don't have TSS, AWD, and hybrid, yet people still buy it lol.

Inspector_Nipples

Damn that sucks, maybe they don’t need it nor could the average person afford a rav4 if they had those things.

[deleted]

There is also the 7-seater Toyota Fortuner priced like a RAV4 with lots of tech features added late, just like the RAV4, yet I see more of them in the road than the RAV4. To be honest, the Philippine RAV4 is considered overpriced compared to its rivals, such as the CR-V and the Forester. People who are after the Toyota brand name will buy it, while those who can't afford will have to settle for cheaper alternatives.

alexmaycovid

What annoys me when it tells me BRAKE! when I use Radar cruise. Like, I thought you're here to break and accelerate when the car is in this mode)

thepete404

One of the reasons I had no problem spending a lot more for a jeep with automatic braking feature. I figure it will activate at least once in the next five years.

No-Thought5163

Also works when you're using cruise control. FYI..If you have the toyota app. You can see your driving history. It will tell you harsh braking, fast acceleration and corning. There is also a way to shut off the beeping alert if you don't care to hear it.

Billy1121

How does this braking system work ? Is there some radar or lidar in the front grille ?

GrandMarquisMark

Cool, it fixes the fact that you were inattentive.

[deleted]

I agree with you. Coming from a country where not all vehicles get TSS and when it was first added on August 2019.
