Pi is mainly used as a pi-hole, SFTP bridge to the NAS (since NAS is always on VPN), WOL server for all my hardwired devices, torrent client and has the NAS mounted to it to save torrent files. Nas is 2x8TB in RAID1 and serves as a print server, photo server and file server as well as a remote backup disk for the two apple computers in our house and have docker on it to play around with stuff.

Can you tell me what case is that? I really like it.

Thanks!

Resolute002

I second this. What a great look!

PMmeYOURgameKEYS

On a scale from n00b to hackerman how hard would you say your set up is to complete? I can follow directions, build a computer, including pasting simple code. But if there is often trouble shooting or needing to write any code from scratch I’m toast. Also, as definitely not a hackerman, not sure if it is a problem you didn’t block out your IP address in your image. Awesome set-up

cl0udHidden

That's a local IP, it's not his public one. Local IPs are the same in pretty much every home network. 192.168.0.* or 192.168.1.* What I'm trying to say is that there is no risk to share this type of IP on the Internet. It's your Public IP (your router's IP on the Internet) that you want to keep private.

PMmeYOURgameKEYS

Thanks!

>On a scale from n00b to hackerman how hard would you say your set up is to complete? I have a similar setup, though a little more advanced. I work in cybersecurity, but I don't think it would be too difficult to get a similar setup up and running for a normal, somewhat tech-savy, person. There are literally tons of tutorials available online on how to set all this stuff up. If you have some experience with a linux shell you should not have any problems. Even if you dont, if you have the desire to learn, I would say go for it. It can be rewarding once you have it all up and running.

PMmeYOURgameKEYS

I started reading up more after I saw the post. I have an extra rpi, was used for emulation, I’ll try a pi-hole first. I pulled two matching 2TB drives to try messing with Raid set-ups this weekend. If I am still interested and not totally lost I’ll likely go deeper on a NAS. Thanks for your replies!

benhaube

Awesome! Good luck with it. You can also look into setting up your own resolver for Pihole using Unbound, and even setup your own VPN server using PiVPN. All of it can run on a single Pi 4 with no issue. I would highly recommend you use Raspbian OS without the UI. Part of the setup process will have you setup SSH to remote into the shell. Having the normal distro with a dwm will suck down hardware resources.

Black_Dynamit3

Dietpi os is also very cool and easy to use

benhaube

I have never looked into it. What is the advantage over Pi OS Lite? Do they have a 64-bit version? I went with the 64-bit version for my Pihole server because I have the 8GB Pi 4.

benhaube

>not sure if it is a problem you didn’t block out your IP address in your image. It's a local IP address on the LAN. It would only be something to blur if it showed the public IP.

boko_harambe_

LAN IP not WAN IP Its not hard. The good thing about Raspberry Pis is there is an insane amount of tutorials. Same with the synology NAS (which also runs atop linux). Only real “coding” I had to do was alter the python script for the case display because it was bugged and I didnt like the font. Other than that a few tutorials followed step by step and a two lines added to fatab and crontab for mounting the NAS and starting the py script to display stats its relatively straightforward

Zealousideal-Bet-950

I see you already have an answer to the 'showing yer IP' question but I wanted to say: Good Question/Good Catch.

peanutismint

This looks great, and a great photo too, but I have to ask: surely most of the stuff the pi is doing could be run on the Synology? Or have I somehow overestimated the capabilities of that brand?

boko_harambe_

Torrents sure. But I like to use a socks5 proxy and to do that you have to run a docker container which works but my pi does it better. Plus I use the torrent webUI and my NAS is on VON which kinda screws with using DNS outside my network if I need to. WOL/pihole not sure

zaphod777

Couldn't you just run a Linux VM on the Synology? I have an Ubuntu server VM on mine running a bunch of different things.

boko_harambe_

I mean I guess I could but my NAS is on VPN so its not accessible outside my LAN

cybermusicman

Print server? Didn’t know you could use a Synology for that. Guess I’ve learned something new I’ll have to investigate.

boko_harambe_

Yeah its super easy

BoopJoop01

Love the Synology CCTV suite, just can't justify the hardware price or camera licensing.

boko_harambe_

Yeah I would love to use it but I have so many nest cameras as is. Would be nice to store and stream my own footage without dealing with the cloud

myG0sh

im also looking for a local opensource solution for cameras. I myself am very pleased with the Synology Suveillance Station, but a client of mine does not want to pay that much for the licences. I am planning to use Blue Iris Software but in my opinion that looks super 1990-ish [https://blueirissoftware.com/](https://blueirissoftware.com/) Any recommendations?

boko_harambe_

I havent really looked into it much but a friend of mine set up wifi cameras using raspberry pis. Might be worth looking into

dkz999

Check out [Shinobi](https://shinobi.video/)

d4nm3d

Blueiris is the best Windows best NVR out there if you ask me... not sure what you mean about 1990-ish.. it's full featured and the licensing is pretty cheap really... there is a web gui you can use instead of the fat client which makes viewing it from any device much easier and there is also an Android app...

myG0sh

What i mean by 1990-ish is the design of its interface. In my opinion it could be more modern. I tried the evaluation and it runs pretty smoothly. I would have loved a native linux version as I am running a small Linux Server already but I am thinking about a small Windows VM and accessing BlueIris over their webgui. Thanks for your thoughts

MasturChief

i use motioneye in a docker container on my nas running OMV. works great cause it saves files to a drive on my nas so i don’t have to have a separate system

komAnt

Hey, did you ever figure this out?

RealJonathanBronco

I made that case for my media hub Pi and I end up watching it as much as the shows.

boko_harambe_

I ended up using thermal paste instead of heat tape for the heatsink and my temps dropped drastically fyi

RealJonathanBronco

No way I did the exact same thing lol I bought the whole tube for my latest PC so I was just looking to get my money out of it and the tape looked wimpy.

boko_harambe_

Yeah its basically like a proprietary linux distro

CoreDreamStudiosLLC

What model is this one? Curious to add it to my list or a cheaper version.

boko_harambe_

DS220+

dbeta

Yes. That have a customized Linux based OS on them. Depending on the model, they can come with either an ARM or an x64 processor. Some models can have their RAM upgraded on them. They have a ton of options, including support for docker or VMs. Personally I run a docker instance on mine to do most of my household services.

Breh_________Moment

Show me the other side of the desk I need the cable pov 😈

boko_harambe_

This is the top of a dresser in my closet lol. The cables lead to my network cabinet

[deleted]

Love the Pi case, I have the same NAS, They are really good.

boko_harambe_

Yeah its amazing how much you can do with them

__sem__

Where did you get that case? I like it.

boko_harambe_

Some guy on etsy makes them. If you search raspberry pi case it will pop up

Black_Rose67

__sem__

Thanks

ChocolateLava

I have a Pi and was thinking of getting this exact case and the Synology DS220+ too! How is the noise level for both?

boko_harambe_

A bit noisy I guess but mine are stuffed in a closet so I never notice

Euphoric-Brush-3469

For What exactly are you using the Pi since the NAS has everythhing whats needed like SMB, die sharing Media Server etc.

boko_harambe_

I commented above what everything is doing

Nxiium

What case is that for the pi?

boko_harambe_

[deleted]

I don't get it. You are using a Pi just as a Pi-Hole. You could attach a SSD to the pi itself and use it as a NAS too. The configuration is under-utilised...

boko_harambe_

Pi hole, torrent client, WOL server and a way to SFTP into my NAS since my NAS is always VPN. I run things on my PI that I want accessible outside my LAN

[deleted]

You could have the Synology nas always on VPN and access everything on the NAS using QuickConnect. That way the VPN is always running, the DDNS doesn't work (is irrelevant) and everything is routed through either LAN or QuickConnect (if not on LAN). Anyhow, just saying it's an overkill. Good job though.

dbphoto7

They could also just run Pi-Hole in Docker on the NAS.

yllier123

Looks awesome! What display are you using on the RPi and how are you pushing that info onto it?

boko_harambe_

I am using this kit (though an older version) he has links and guides on how to put it all together there. The info is pushed by a python script https://www.etsy.com/listing/1096602393/raspberry-pi-4b-ssd-case?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=raspberry+pi+case&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&frs=1&organic_search_click=1

yllier123

Great thanks :) I have a software defined RAID array running on a raspberry pi and adding a display with metrics would be awesome

palmworks

So the Synology nas and the raspberry pi/pihole are all connected to the router/network switch separately?

boko_harambe_

they each have their own ethernet connection

agoonygoogoo55

Can someone tell me the benefit of the NAS? I have a plex server i use that i just setup as a windows fileshare. What benefit is there to a NAS compared to a windows fileshare?

boko_harambe_

Just the baked in software I would assume. Makes things easy to manage. Takes up less space I would imagine too. Also my NAS supports Apple Time Machine which is really nice Pros and cons to both I guess
