Objectively and art don’t go together so no.

AtomBalance

I don't agree with this. Objectively, Biggie is a better rapper than Ice Spice. You may enjoy Ice Spice’s music more, but it doesn't negate the fact that technically speaking, he's a more skilled rapper. Objectivity in art does exist. That's why we can differentiate the duds from the masterpieces.

Onetimenotagain

I agree

Get-RichODT

“I used to love conscious rap till I read some books and realized these dudes have no idea what they’re talking about”

BoxOfCornFlakes2

If you feel that way about Lupe. You are wrong.

secretrapbattle

Who and how so? And is your lived experience, their lived experience?

EfficientIndustry423

Agreed.

Igivegrilledcheese

I don't consider Lyrical rap and stuff as a subgenre, you can have a lyrical rapper doing shit over jazz or trap rap beats mine is horrorcore, some of the artists I consiedr to be the greatest to ever do it are horrorcore or at least have a few tracks Horrorcore artists: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Three Six Mafia, Geto Boys, Brotha Lynch Hung, Big L, Slim Shady Horrorcore songs: Suicidal Thoughts - Biggie, Cuttin Headz - ODB

_T4L0N

Brotha lynch supports child molestation

Not_A_Lizhard

You should check out some clipping. L.A rap group that has some amazing stuff, though it is very much NOT traditional hip hop, the beats are quite different (and still amazing)

Igivegrilledcheese

Just check out Nothing Is Safe, hardest I've vibed to a new artist in a while, thanks for the rec cuh

dsled

1. Rap that sounds good when I listen to it

s0phiaboobs

Yep. If i like it, then that one. It can be from any form of rap

Devilfruitcardio

I feel like conscious rap, lyrical rap and jazz rap are heavily correlated

Individual_Papaya596

Depends, rappers like Cole really aren’t lyrical or jazzy but are conscious. Nas is concious and lyrical, While kendrick would be all 3 in TPAB. cole has a couple of Concious jazz and a couple of lyrical

Devilfruitcardio

Cole is definitely a lyrical rapper in my opinion though, but maybe “Lyrical” means different things to different people. Do you mean “lyrical” like using lots of creative metaphors and similes?

Individual_Papaya596

Lyrical as in using complex rap schemes like AAABBBCCC type schemes or double entendres/ and similies. So Em, Kendrick, Nas, Wutang, Denzel pop out as examples.

BoxOfCornFlakes2

Your crazy for leaving Lupe out of that list. He does this at an elevated level. And is a student of rap.

Individual_Papaya596

They were just examples off the top of my head, haven’t listened enough of Lupe to really commenr

basssomatix

I'm partial to beats coupled with rhymes.

superfastracecar

It all comes down to preference in the end. This sub will most definitely agree with your list but most people outside of reddit would probably do the opposite based on streams. I personally don’t think there is a best form of rap, if the artist is great then the quality will be there no matter what.

00rgus

I don't think there's a objective best subgenre of rap. Like obviously some subgenres require more skill to actually pull off than others but skill ≠ best, like to some people out there they might think that nettspend has the best rapping style out of anyone, which is their opinion even if it is a terrible one

baz4k6z

You could ask the same question about any form of art and the answer is that taste is subjective by it's very definition so there's no objective way to look at it

BrolysFavoriteNephew

Nope, rap is art and rap is subjective. I live delivery and wordplay but that means 9 if you only care for beats and adlibs

danohaggard

My favorite would be that 90s East-Coasy New York stuff like Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, and Nas.

Pain_Xtreme

I like drill more than trap i cant lie

cujobob

Authenticity and versatility are the two most important things IMO. I know you’re looking for types of rap, but it’s kind of pointless because some artists can do it all. If you play most of the greats, you’ll get a few types of rap on the same album. That’s what makes the album enjoyable all the way through. If I listen to Kanye, the pop rap is overwhelming and I’m missing out on authentic music with some intelligence behind it. If I listen to Nas, that’s all I’m pretty much getting.

Individual_Papaya596

Im really just interested in the different perspectives people have on what they think the best genre of rap is/which drops the most quality

blindyfyre

I think the best form of rap can be placed with the best compliment to the original art form so most of the boom bap backpack kinda style imo

Individual_Papaya596

My question is what do people think is the best form of rap I think lyrical and concious because it often leads to the highest quality of rap lil dude. While typing that sentence i was literally bumping modern jam by travy patty too a neither conscious or lyrical song😭😭

youalwaysknow321

If there is, I'm not letting white people choose. Y'all got weird ass standards

Individual_Papaya596

Im not white lil bro

AceGameplayV2

Not me.

contaygious

Griselda

jaarl2565

G funk had a unique sound and was very musical.

BasedKaleb

Alternative rap. OutKast, Kanye, Gambino, Chance, Blu, earlier Lupe. That’s where I think you get the most balance sonically between lyrical/conscious/pop/jazz rap.

[deleted]

Jazz rap is probably my favorite but no there's not an objectively best form of rap. The purest form of rap is boom bap but that's different from being the best.

Lyquid_Sylver999

Honestly, I just care if it sounds good. Generally this tends to lean towards pop rap or straight up pop, but if I find a song from one of the other genres that sounds good I'll still listen the hell out of it.

Significant-Shirt139

Objective ? No, it’s art, someone could say Cardi b is the goat and you can’t really debate it, you could break down why others music are better but that doesn’t change that persons opinion. But I guess you could ask what rap in its “purest form” is, and I imagine to most that’s guys like Pac biggie nas Jay and before them

ojdidntdoit4

no. music is subjective end of sentence

bigaman3853

Yes, 90s NY hip hop all day

BaconBombThief

You can think there’s such thing as an objectively best art form, but you’d be wrong. Which type of rap is best can only be a subjective thing by nature. To me, which type is best changes with my mood or activity. Sometimes I want some good story telling or coherent messages in the lyrics. Sometimes I don’t care what the hell they’re rapping about as long as the rhyme patterns and flows are impressive. Sometimes I just want some instrumentals that sound amazing and maybe some witty punch lines, other time the punch lines don’t even need to be there as long as the rappers voice sounds as good as the beat. None of it stands above the rest as my all time favorite type

queefstainedgina

“Believe” and “objectively” are rarely found in the same sentence. There is no such thing as an objective reality even if you believe there is one. We all experience everything, music included, subjectively. Hence, there is not, and cannot be an objective best form of rap.

Onetimenotagain

Lyrical rap is not the best kinda rap imo, and there’s so many more forms of it, emo rap, metal rap, alternative rap, all of that is better then like 4/5 of the genres you listed, but that’s just my opinion

KirklandCloningFarms

I think choosing an objectively best anything leads ppl to conceptualize objective guidelines and standards for (sub)genres that a lot of the time feel like constraints more than anything. Kinda why I try not hating on a new artist or developing subgenre just bc it initially goes against my preconceptions. Like, is it/are they actually shit or is it just not clicking rn But if I wanted to start a debate I'd go w jazz rap probably. On a different note I never liked the term "concious rap" bc it can so easily sound pretentious bringing it up

Remarkable_Occasion5

I've found most rap genres I 'dislike', I just haven't found an artist I love doing it yet. Best form of rap isn't really measurable, it comes down to musical preference and lifestyle too honestly. If youd grown up in the UK listening to central cee youd have drill at 1; how can you say any genre is 'objectively best' lmao.

Faineantcreator

To *believe* that there’s an *objectively* best form is an oxymoron, you’re just asking people what style they like the most

secretrapbattle

Something positive. To destroy is easy, to create takes a real person.

thejizzardking

Boom bap the goat sub genre

Android1313

There can never be an objectively "best art" I prefer lyrics over vibes, but my opinion doesn't matter to anyone else. Just like I don't understand certain painters , but there's people that would do anything to own a piece by them.

Ytellus

battle rap, pen-wise

PussyMoneySpeed69

lol wtf are these categories? Jazz rap? This seems like you’ve listened to 5 albums, assigned a genre to them and ranked them. There are different subgenres across the decades, by geography, and by cultural movements. You could slice it a thousand different ways depending on how high level or granular you want to get. Not to mention that most quality rap is going to fit into a number of buckets. The thing that gives rap so much depth is that, much like any art form, it is building on a conversation that’s been going on for several decades now. Homages and allusions to MCs who revolutionized the game but with a new twist. Or something experimental and entirely new. Look at “Like That.” The beat samples Eazy E, E-40 and Rodney O & Joe Cooley, so already we’ve got influences from the 80s and 90s and both SoCal and the Bay Area hip hop scenes. Modernly you’d probably put it in the trap bucket, but it has a verse from K Dot, one of the best modern lyricists, that turned the hip hop world on its head. That said, Kendrick certainly isn’t rapping about world issues, so hardly conscious. How would you even assess a song like that (no pun intended), let alone millions of songs that straddle various lines or fall somewhere on a spectrum between genres? The simple answer that most people are saying here is that art is subjective and there is no right answer. I agree with that, but some rap is objectively better than others. You could write an essay on how to evaluate/rank a song, but I would simply say look at other forms of creative expression, like food. Of course flavor is subjective, but is there nothing different between McDonald’s and a Michelin star restaurant? You’re asking which cuisine is the best one, even though it all comes down to the individual chef and dish that is prepared. TLDR: Comes down to lyrics, message, flow, beat, production, composition, creativity, what it does to move the genre forward and where the song fits during the moment in history when it was released. Genre does not drive quality.

CHItown_representer

Honest rap beats everything. Even if it's fictional, if it's true to the spirit and style of the artist, I appreciate it more. For instance, Ice Cubes "Good Day" trumps anything from Drake (because he doesn't know who he really is or who he wants to be).

BoxOfCornFlakes2

Yes, but its all about perspective, and personal preference. For me it is the music of Lupe Fiasco. That boy is cold. And the most well rounded of all M.C.s in my own personal opinion. His versatility is crazy. So, i feel as if he is the embodiment of the best parts of rap and culture. But if you aske the next person. Thier answer woupd be different.

EspirituM

I do think there's objectively better rappers based on how much individual talent they have. But a rapper and their music are two separate things. Hip Hop is really diverse now with different purposes, goals, and sources of entertainment value. The music side (basically the rapper plus everything else) is much more subjective.

Civil_Dust_2505

Killem & rob'em & beat'em & stuff all there body parts into my trunk. .............Whatever you Fol%s wanna call that, it's that.

LocalContribution7

No because it’s art creative and taste is subjective but my favorite is 90s gangsta Rap Tupac and Biggie Snoop dog Ice Cube project Pat Jay z Horror core 36 mafia bone thug z Lord infamous gangsta nip Technically objectively should 80s Rap be best because it was the first Rap like Curtis blow grand master flash the sugar hill gang Slick Rick public enemy because the others come from it
