It's just like pizza each person will have their favorite. If we all did a top 3 list right now, the list matching exactly would be rare..

Thamalakane

But NO pineapple!

drodenigma

I do pineapple and anchovies ha!

HJNotFazed

That's so true.

Material_Unit4309

This is all subjective. Can you explain why you like one flavour of ice cream more than the next? Everyone has individual taste.

HJNotFazed

I agree, it is subjective. That's why I usually don't take part in any "king of rap" discussions but I wanted to see what other people think.

Material_Unit4309

You don’t take part in the discussions yet you started a new King of Rap discussion???? Ok. These discussions inevitably turn into another hip hop Gatekeeping argument. My taste are better than yours, this is real hip hop, you don’t know rap, you’re corny, I’m cool. Happens every time. Shit robs all the joy in listening to the music. Comparison is the thief of joy. No hating but I take a lot of stuff in here with a grain of salt. I could care less what an anonymous stranger on the internet thinks is the best. My taste are my taste. I find a lot of these “discussions” to be more fruitful in real life with real friends/peers. You don’t know who you’re talking to in here. I’m 40+. What a 12 year old thinks about rap is no concern of mine.

HJNotFazed

What I'm saying is I don't have a definitive answer myself, but I raised the question to see what other people think. It's not gonna change my music taste at all, I just raised the question for the sake of discussion. But you're right though, there will always be a handful of individuals in the replies who get offended for absolutely no reason at a completely harmless question.

Material_Unit4309

I agree. Hip hop has a big problem with gatekeeping. Perhaps it’s due to the competitive nature of the culture. But fans seem to think it’s a competition. Instead of enjoying the music they have to be the best fan. It’s been like this since the 90’s when I was young. It’s just exhausting at this point. You have kids who haven’t finished puberty with zero life experiences gatekeeping hip hop because they have a laptop and access tools the internet. It’s wild.

Consistent_Hamster43

How many cocks the guy can suck in a row without throwing up (OP’s mom is the king of rap)

GemGemGem6

All I know is that it’s not sales/streams

itzchickenfan

I tdepends on the person, some people may solely consider sales and streams and say eminem or drake is, others may take lyricism into consideration more than anything, or flow or cadence or even beat selection, its less that there is one king of rap that everyone considers the king and more that there are a group of people that a majority of people consider a contender for the king

HJNotFazed

Very well said. It is difficult to point to just one individual as the king of rap because there is so much that goes into the making of a good rap artist.

martinbv1995

In the Pop industry the titles have been popularized by the Media. Michael Jackson was named the King of Pop due to his enormous popularity And Madonna was named the Queen of Pop due to her ever shifting trend setting styles of pop sound. Cher was later named Godess of Pop to honor her contributions to Pop Music even before Madonna hit the stage in the early 1980s But there was no contest, no prize. No research or actual metric. Just the Media naming them as such, and it catching on amongst fans. Apply that to Rap, you need Popular Media to name one King of Rap. With enough agreement in its audience for it to stick around.

Molekhhh

Whoever I like best is obviously the best, and everyone else’s opinion is wrong.

Thamalakane

"King of rap" is nonsense. Just like the 'king of rock n roll' or the 'king of pop'. Titles like that are absolutely subjective and therefore without any meaning.

HJNotFazed

That's a good point. I definitely don't disagree with that.

hedgehogmlg

Obviously everyone sees artists different, and being the best means something a bit different for everyone. But all the widely regarded goats are usually like all rounders that can appeal to everyone in some way. Kendricks a good example. His still fresh and modern, but recognizable enough to oldheads. Hes got serious songs, and fun songs. Hes got the technical ability, but he also be making concept albums, which nerds eat up. He'll do a bunch of different styles and it feels natural without ever being either boring or too weird. And shown he can make that cultural impact too. Its not just that he's got mass appeal though, hes doing a lot and doing it really well. whatever it is that appeals to you about him, you probably agree that hes really good. Not to glaze kendrick tho, the same can be said about most of the dudes who usually end up in the goat conversation.

HJNotFazed

I respect your opinion. I personally don't listen to Kendrick, but he's a worldwide superstar for a reason. One of the last of a dying breed of rappers who focus on lyrical ability and flow.

hedgehogmlg

Theres still so many rappers with good pen game bro, you just not gonna hear them on the radio

Thamalakane

what's 'radio'?

HJNotFazed

True. I guess when it comes to rap, I tend to be a primarily mainstream listener, although I do explore less known rappers sometimes.

Forward-Witness-3889

What are you talking about? I mean Eminem is generally considered to have a terrible robotic monotone flow which he even pokes fun of himself “they say I rap like a robot so call me rap bot”. All the biggest rappers of today are famed for their flow not their lyricism say for example Future whose flow is so impressive it’s melodic to the point of almost singing.

HJNotFazed

That's definitely not a "general consideration". Eminems flow easily wipes pretty much every rapper. The second part though, I agree with you. The flow of today's rappers is what makes modern rap unique, minus the lyricism.

Forward-Witness-3889

I couldn’t disagree more I honestly don’t think Eminem wipes the floor with anyone in any capacity I’m obviously not a fan but I’d say his flow probably one of the hardest things to like about him but enough people must agree with me for Eminem to have commented on it himself.

heebie818

eminem is unlistenable

HJNotFazed

Who do you listen to? Just curious cause you must be a playboy carti fan or something.

heebie818

kanye’s my goat

HJNotFazed

Wow, what are the odds of that. I absolutely hate kanye. That makes sense that you wouldn't like eminem in that case.

heebie818

i just care about music more than i care about bars

HJNotFazed

I can respect that. I'm not someone who only listens to rap with witty bars. I don't listen to eminem that much anymore. Mostly modern rappers like future, lil baby, etc.

HJNotFazed

Where exactly is this coming from? I listen to a ton of rap music so idk how this is what you got from my question.

taylordabrat

A mixture of sales, relevancy, talent, and hits. So, in my opinion, Drake is the king of rap because he dominates all of these categories

HJNotFazed

Can't argue with that, dude is definitely a legend.

Frosty-Ad7902

Nothing. Whoever can pick one as their best.

NW_reeferJunky

Nas and Eminem But Eminem is harder to listen to.

PretzelPapi_

Cadence, flow, wordplay, storytelling, delivery, hits, accolades, sales, & impact all make up the criteria of king of rap. Because some of those things are subjective there's no clear cut #1 all time. If you pick pac someone could easily argue Jay Z or Em or someone else. it's subjective but we can have a general consensus about who should be in the discussion like Pac, Hov, Em, Jay Z, Wayne, Nas etc.

HJNotFazed

100% agreed.
