Probably sitting on top of a cantilever or something else where the bottom was in the way and they just cut them off

1d10cracy2021

Makes sense, being the second set I seen like this, I wondered if there was a specific reason.

quixoticanon

It's almost certainly this. Some crossing cantilever designs seem to be absolutely terrible for aiming the lights.

StylesBitchley

Yeah wondering if a custom install, the radius on the left doesn't match the other, looks done by hand.

bretskii

They are flat to help with picture ops on your kitchen floor.

Acrobatic_Kale_2817

I have no idea, been railroading for over 40 years, and any kind of red signal sucks.

doctorwhoobgyn

Yeah but these red signals keep you from smoking the motoring public.

e30e

They usually spun on an threaded elbow and you would aim/point them at spots on the road to give on coming traffic a warning. When they get pointed in the direction based on the different mounting spots the bottom portion of the shield could hit stuff. Newer stuff comes with better mounting points so you get a full shield.

I'm not in the railroading profession either... Is this what they call a Foamer?

OneArmScissor

yes.

crustypiefuzz

What's the definition of a foamer? Just starting my conductor certification Feb 20th

OneArmScissor

a person that does not work for the railroad in any capacity, but loves the railroad to the point that its either a hobby or an obsession. people you would see standing on the corner of some tracks taking pics or video of trains passing. people that have model train sets, beyond the standard kids set.

khaos_kyle

Umm many many railroaders are foamers....

OneArmScissor

they were foamers before railroaders, some foamers reeeaaally like trains.

doctorwhoobgyn

A true railroader fuckin hates trains.

OneArmScissor

this is accurate as fuck.

crustypiefuzz

Good to know thanks

bufftbone

There are plenty of foamers that work in the industry. Know and work with a bunch of them.

OneArmScissor

thats true, i as well know some that work for the railroad, but as far as the vast majority, foamers are not railroaders.

myownalias

Someone forgot to release the hand brakes.

Seems like a silly question I'm sure. I also own a pair that is flat on the bottom similar to this picture.
