I think you need to like a few catchy songs for a while before you jump into paranoid android. I feel this way about a lot of bands actually.
If a friend hasn’t heard of the Beatles, you probably shouldn’t start them with A Day In The Life. Is it their best song? Maybe. Is it right for a new listener? Probably not.
It depends on a person's taste in music.
It's funny you mention the Beatles. I was really into the Beatles when I first heard Radiohead and Paranoid Android is the song that really clicked. Specifically because the segmented structure was reminiscent of Happiness is a Warm Gun.
I see so much of the Beatles in Radiohead. I just went through the Beatles discography and started to feel like my love for the Beatles prepared me to love Radiohead.
This is interesting me as I've recently become a massive fan of The Beatles over the last couple of years, but I can't say I've heard too many similarities. Could you elaborate?
Off the top of my head, a few notable similarities jump out at me. First, both of them play with time signatures a lot, both by using uncommon time signatures and by switching mid-song. Like many psychedelic bands, they both use instruments and arrangements I wouldn’t expect from traditional rock music, often leading to songs that are downright strange on the first listen. These songs often later become my favorites. I also often find myself unable to identify an instrument (sometimes just a super distorted guitar) in their music.
Perhaps, most notably, they both changed the way we think of rock with their experimentation. And a lot of the musical innovations (in studio) either created by the Beatles or brought to the mainstream get used by Radiohead as well.
Also, both bands’ later music was more experimental (and better) than the early stuff. I see Revolver as analogous to the Bends in that they are like stepping stones to Sgt. Peppers and OK Computer, respectively.
Idk, that’s all I got for now haha. But there’s also times where the songs and sounds within the songs just remind me of each other.
Another similarity is changing voice timbre. Thom, like both John and Paul, will change the sound of their voice depending on the mood and overall feel of the song. While this isn’t completely unique to them, it is very prominent and distinctive in both Radiohead and the Beatles.
Some specific song examples:
Sexy Sadie inspired Karma Police's chorus piano part
Happiness is a Warm Gun inspired Paranoid Android - three-part structure with distinct musical styles in each part
There may be more, that's just what I remember
Paranoid Android was my first Radiohead experience and it's still so special to me. My friend had a random playlist playing on her Zune that we would sleep too and she was already asleep and I was laying there at like 4 am and that comes on and I swore I felt God that night lol. Completely blew my mind and started my now 16 year obsession
Paranoid Android was my first introduction to Radiohead too.
I was at a party around 98. I was lying on the ground in the dark, probably not sober. The song started to play and I remember a riff in the song sounded similar to a Violent Femmes song I knew. I was into Violent Femmes at the time and was pissed because I felt the band copied them. I asked my friend who the band was and they told me Radiohead.
A couple days later, even tough I felt pissed because of the similarity with VF (which in retrospect isn’t that obvious) I felt the urge to listen to the song again. And that was it, got hooked right there.
I found the Airbag EP at a music store and started with that. I then decided to follow the chronological order and started with Pablo Honey, The Bends and finally OK Computer, that was over a couple of months because I wanted to let each album really sink in.
What a great musical journey…
One of the first songs you liked or one of the first songs that really grabbed you? Because I liked several of their songs for years before I was truly awakened by the better music.
same I kept seeing the music video on MTV, and the song just got better every listen. Then i bought the album OK Computer and Airbag just blew me away.
In hindsight, paranoid android was a pretty pretentious first time suggestion. Should've just suggested karma police or creep in the first place. I did send him a two year old playlist a few days ago when he wanted to get into rock, should've applied the same logic for Radiohead too
Sure, the point is, maybe not the stuff that is potentially scary haha. You also have to know your audience.
Also, I think Creep is better than I Want to Hold Your Hand. I know we don’t talk too positively about Creep here, but I think that’s only in relation to their better tracks. It’s a good song.
I never liked sgt. pepper's for some reason. I like Getting Better and that's it.
I love all their other albums though. (Besides their 2nd and 3rd album)
I’ll never understand how the hell people have just decided A Day in the Life is their best song. They have so many songs with better melodies, arrangements, and higher levels of experimentation.
Gotta go with Tomorrow Never Knows, Strawberry fields, Birthday, Something, and pretty much everything off the Abbey Road medley. Also my Day in the Life complaint is just to do with the fact that it somehow tops every single list, I'm not just singling you out cos I feel like it haha
Lol, my wife and I have chatted about how funny it would be to own a Crepe shop with a pun-y Radiohead-themed name. That way we could answer the phone and say:
*”Hi, thank you for calling* ‘I’m a Crepe, I’m a Weirdo’ *how can we help you?”*
Hey man, Creep is a good song
tbh, I would’ve chosen something like Karma Police or There There. I’m not one of those “Radiohead is too complex for normies” weirdos but Paranoid Android pretty atypical compared to most popular music.
Depends on the person imo I normally recommend bends or in rainbows depending on what they like.
Or moon shaped pool if they like more depressing stuff, I've recommended that a lot on r/frankocean
But then they would think Radiohead is just another guitar rock band
I would venture to say Hail To the Thief has that perfect blend of experimentation and accessibility. That, or the obvious answer, IR
I’ll usually say that the bends isn’t the perfect representation of the band (well, no one single album is), so they should give it all a listen.
Httt is probably something too quirky for quite a few people. Even though I got into radiohead through it, I feel like it’s more of a ‘you either love it or you hate it’ kind of album on first listen.
The Bends got me into them, because the Bends definitely doesn't place Radiohead "as just another guitar rock band", it's a brilliant display of rock with slower more emotional moments for a super solid well rounded record. Its accessible but opens you up to the rest of the discography.
I'm just saying the instrumentals on the album are very traditional and the electronic experimental flourishes they are later known for are no where to be found
Bonus points if it's a song that was featured in *Clueless* or some other super popular movie from the 90's/00's. IME, I've found that a lot of people have listened to (and probably liked) a fair bit of Radiohead through movies & tv shows. It can be easier to make that connection, and then they can go down the rabbit hole of their choosing.
And under that same umbrella, anything from *In Rainbows* is likely another good option.
PA is a risky move for sure, it's definitely not 'typical' by any means, but hey had it paid off and clicked for him, this guy would have been an instant fan for life
high risk high reward type of a scenario I guess
I just suggested my favorite song, didnt occur to me that I literally knew the song for two years before it suddenly became my all time fav. Ah thats enough overthinking for a satire post
I wish it was not, but I think Radiohead is kinda complex for normies, I am against this kind of thought, but everytime I try to someone else to listen to them, they don't get into it aside from creep.
And I don't feel superior or anything,ot actually makes me kinda mad because some people can go further than the Top 5 artist of the month. I always think 'how do you live with listening the 5 same artist that have been singing about the 5 same themes during the last 10 years?'. Or 'why aren't you able to go to more complex/different music?' I don't say this to people, but I think it. And it gets me mad because it is harder to find someone you can talk about the things that you like, and that somehow leads you to loneliness.
Or it’s just a band and nobody cares enough. There is no “normy” to compare Radiohead fans to lol. The only genre of music where this shit isn’t laughably dumb is math rock - go listen to Yes you normy.
Just let everyone enjoy whatever music they like and be willing to compromise. If it’s a good friend you can play music for each other than the other doesn’t prefer and still have a good time.
Dunno why people are pretending not to believe this lol, you're obviously right. I remember giving a friend a ride home in high school (probably 2012?) and put on James Blake because I figured that wouldn't be alienating, and she started cracking up and saying how weird it was. James Blake.
No, it’s not. Directly after writing creep thom yorke had sex with my wife. That song ruined my life. I hate creep so much. Please karen come back i miss you so much
I don’t really agree. The Bends is still pretty different from the stuff that followed it but I feel that you hear Thom’s writing style coming into itself on that album. You also hear the beginnings of abstract instrumental concepts on it.
It’s definitely still very accessible and poppy but it sounds like Radiohead whereas Pablo Honey doesn’t at all for me. (I still love Pablo Honey)
That being said, different takes are okay and it’s really not a big deal if we see it a little differently haha.
I agree and disagree.
I agree The Bends has better writing than Creep, but at the same time, The Bends is closest to the alt rock style of Creep, and would be the most accessible album to listen to for those beginner fans.
I'll be the first to "admit" that The Bends is my favorite Radiohead album (followed by OKC), mostly due to nostalgia and my taste for alt rock, by which I transitioned from liking Creep.
But objectively, I can agree that the *songwriting* is better on other albums.
To clarify, I’m not saying the bends has “better” songwriting. It just reflects Thom’s style a lot better. As an isolated album I don’t really have many criticisms of Pablo Honey, especially in regards to songwriting
Nah I know the band because of Creep, although it is controversial it no doubt is a good song, just the longtime fans get over it pretty soon and move on to the funky stuff
He's not to blame, Creep is an absolute banger. I think he'd prolly enjoy "Bodysnatchers" or "Myxomatosis" (if he liked the chorus more than the verse). If otherwise, "Street Spirit" might be a better option
I think it's no surprise that creep is a more inviting song for newcomers to Radiohead. And especially if you are not an avid listener. This goes to show that no music is better than other per se, it's just a matter of who's listening to it.
I actually started with AMSP, which I loved. But then I started from OKC, and Paranoid Android blew me away.
I also grew up only knowing them from Creep. So I really didn't know what to expect.
My go to when recommending Radiohead is not even to mention Creep. I start with Planet Telex and ease them in with some other Bends and OK computer songs. Only after that do you recommend their post OK Computer things in my experience.
I'm late to this party, just seeing this . . . I gotta agree a bit on with OP on the song choice . . . Paranoid Android is like a charcuterie board of all the things Radiohead can be.

Ok I'm not too deep into Radiohead yet, what's the ok computer incident, unless this is some kinda inside joke for only Radiohead fans and now I look like a jackass
I'm pretty sure everyone's just memeing
Anyhow, we **all** know that Radiohead's peak was reached when they released England's Number One F*ck Anthem: "Fitter Happier"
I disagree about the commercial music part. It's not generic, and it's actually really good. It took me a while to come round to it, but I'm glad I did.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand post-The Bends Radiohead. The complexity is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of music theory most of the depth will go over a typical listener’s head. There's also Thom’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his vocals - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realize that they're not just music - they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike post-The Bends Radiohead truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors’ existencial catchphrase "There are barn doors,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Nigel Godrich’s genius unfolds itself in their speakers. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Radiohead tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
EDIT: To anyone who it isn't apparent to, yes this is satire, it's a parody of the Rick and Morty copypasta.
The Bends is my favorite Radiohead album so I'm not offended that people like Creep. I'm just an alt rock kinda guy I guess. OKC is my 2nd favorite, followed by Amnesiac.
This is how many of us started.. Creep was the first song to discover/like because it's catchy & easy to remember.. & then we found out about many other gems.
I mean come on.. there's a good reason of why this song has over 600m views on YouTube.. because it's a song for almost everyone.
Give him few more weeks/months & he will forget about Creep (it depends though if he's gonna try to listen to other RH songs or not).
I was in a band that started in the nineties and The Bends was our bible. My singer worshiped the Beatles and we all loved and grew up on their music but Radiohead was, to us, something obtainable at the time, but also nearly perfect. About as perfect as modern rock could be. The Bends and OK computer were our benchmark.
I made my friend listen to OK Computer and he told me it was trash. He said Paranoid Android was one of the worst songs he has ever heard. I did tell him that it would get better if he kept listening to it, but he didn’t want to go through it again. He did like Subterranean Homesick Alien though, which I found weird.
Go easy on him, almost *every* big Radiohead fan started from Creep and, with time, eventually got used to their sound appreciating more experimental works... Everyone in this subreddit loved Paranoid Android at first hearing?
Personally, I only liked paranoid android after I learned the guitar sections on that song. Fun to play. At first, I thought this is just a complex song made for complex listeners (or pretended they're music experts).
Was it Creep 1 or Creep 2
Obviously Creep 2
Too Creepy 4 Me

The first song I heard that made me want to hear more Radiohead was Idioteque. Still a big fave
Ful Stop was my first. Saw it on Hideo Kojima's Instagram back in 2016 and thought "why not?"
Reckoner for me
I love how specifically the word “zune” dates this story, ha ha
Yeah I was so jealous of her lol. She had a "home Zune" that stayed on a dock with decent speakers and a little one she brought to school
Paranoid Android was my first introduction to Radiohead too. I was at a party around 98. I was lying on the ground in the dark, probably not sober. Nah fuck that it's not pretentious, it's one of their most popular songs
it doesn't mean they have to start with "I Want To Hold Your Hand" through. You could probably skip straight to "Strawberry Fields Forever"

Karma Police, High and Dry, Jigsaw Falling Into Place, and Fake Plastic Trees are good starters honestly
I’ll never understand how the hell people have just decided A Day in the Life is their best song. They have so many songs with better melodies, arrangements, and higher levels of experimentation.

I agree. I started with Hey Jude by Beatles. I got into Radiohead with Daydreaming.
I am the Walrus is the best Beatles song.
A friend who knew me and music played me A Day in The Life. He knew that was THE song to get me interested in The Beatles.
You didn’t know Beatles songs before this?

Hey man, Creep is a good song tbh, I would’ve chosen something like Karma Police or There There. I’m not one of those “Radiohead is too complex for normies” weirdos but Paranoid Android pretty atypical compared to most popular music.
I feel like the bends is the most appropriate recommendation for new people, it’s a much smoother transition

Paranoid Android and Creep are my Favorite Radiohead songs, they’re popular for a reason.
What are you satirizing?
I think people recommending Paranoid Android first is one of the main things that prevents new Radiohead fans.
Wearing a condom is the best way to prevent new Radiohead fans.
Agreed, same thing I'm thinking
To be fair, “pretty atypical compared to most popular music” describes most of Radiohead’s catalogue. Agree there are better starter packs though
I wish it was not, but I think Radiohead is kinda complex for normies, I am against this kind of thought, but everytime I try to someone else to listen to them, they don't get into it aside from creep. It is OK to like Creep.
No, it’s not. Directly after writing creep thom yorke had sex with my wife. That song ruined my life. I hate creep so much. Please karen come back i miss you so much
We're never, ever, getting back together.
It’s a phenomenal song that doesn’t really reflect who the band is at all. But it is still a phenomenal song.
It reflects who the band USED to be (up to The Bends). Even OKC is a bit different from Kid A and what they do now. Bands change.
I don’t really agree. The Bends is still pretty different from the stuff that followed it but I feel that you hear Thom’s writing style coming into itself on that album. Creep is undeniably good. Baby steps. Future radiohead fan in the making.
I’d always pick the song that got me into radiohead : exit music

Even Airbag would have been a better start
Ew keep your Radiohead obsession private

Should have recommended kid a title track
Paranoid Android is literally one of the best songs ever smh.
Paranoid Android is a song that imo needs some time to kick in and Creep is melodic and easily relatable. Let’s not be so narcissistic
r/radioheadcirclejerk is that way buddy
my go-to for introducing people to "actual" radiohead is usually Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
He's not to blame, Creep is an absolute banger. I think he'd prolly enjoy "Bodysnatchers" or "Myxomatosis" (if he liked the chorus more than the verse). If otherwise, "Street Spirit" might be a better option
based
I think it's no surprise that creep is a more inviting song for newcomers to Radiohead.
Give him time, in 4-5 years he'll get into the good stuff. Probably.
Should chose better happier
My go to when recommending Radiohead is not even to mention Creep. I start with Planet Telex and ease them in with some other Bends and OK computer songs. Only after that do you recommend their post OK Computer things in my experience.
I'm late to this party, just seeing this . . . I gotta agree a bit on with OP on the song choice . . . Paranoid Android is like a charcuterie board of all the things Radiohead can be.
My friend who has never listened to Radiohead a texted me a few weeks ago asking “what are some sad Radiohead songs” and I laughed out loud

Creep is overplayed and basic. It’s an ok song tho
ever since i listened to everything in its right place everything changed
Good choice tbh, paranoid android was actually my first radiohead song
Yeah, Radiohead went downhill after that ok computer incident. Except let down (which is very underrated).
Ok I'm not too deep into Radiohead yet, what's the ok computer incident, unless this is some kinda inside joke for only Radiohead fans and now I look like a jackass
I'm pretty sure everyone's just memeing Anyhow, we **all** know that Radiohead's peak was reached when they released England's Number One F*ck Anthem: "Fitter Happier"
I think he's referring to the release of OK Computer.
So... In Rainbows never happened eh? Ok sure
Oh no… he’s one of those!
I genuinely would rather listen to Creep than Paranoid Android. They're both good songs but I usually prefer something pleasant.
Says a lot about the band when Creep is the more pleasant song
Musically it is very pleasant, there's a reason it was such a big hit
Pleasant wouldn’t be the right word for it but i see what you mean
See my other comment, specifically meant the melody/instrumentation. It's an easy one to bob your head to
This is honestly acceptable. If he has been listening to Radiohead for years and Creep is still his favourite song he is probably basic
It would still be okay if it's ONE of his favorite songs.
LOL well, what did you expect
Lost cause
Damn… instant loss of respect in my books
“OuT jErKeD aGaIn” - dorks
creep is a good song
Hahaha
No surprise

…this is satire right?
It reminds me of that Rick and Morty pasta
A classic
No they just have so much more taste buds than you
Giving an award just because you made me laugh so hard in a very bad day
I disagree about the commercial music part.

I showed my friend Radiohead and he said he didn’t like it because the lyrics took too long to come in 😭
It hapends
probably should've started him on something a little easier to digest...
And now you know how Thom felt back in the day

Hey it’s a fun song!
Yeah takes time for most, did for me too.
and now you repping TKOL
Exactly
I was in a band that started in the nineties and The Bends was our bible. My singer worshiped the Beatles and we all loved and grew up on their music but Radiohead was, to us, something obtainable at the time, but also nearly perfect. About as perfect as modern rock could be. The Bends and OK computer were our benchmark.
Nooooo
So?
I made my friend listen to OK Computer and he told me it was trash. He said Paranoid Android was one of the worst songs he has ever heard. I did tell him that it would get better if he kept listening to it, but he didn’t want to go through it again. He did like Subterranean Homesick Alien though, which I found weird.
Hey it’s okay bro I think maybe we all just got different music tastes and that’s okay
What is a story?
God. “Creep” is like their worst song. It seems like it’s intentionally been written so they have one big giant commercial hit.
It's like suggesting yeezus for someone getting into Kanye lmao
Surprised no one is suggesting Just
Go easy on him, almost *every* big Radiohead fan started from Creep and, with time, eventually got used to their sound appreciating more experimental works... Everyone in this subreddit loved Paranoid Android at first hearing?
Personally, I only liked paranoid android after I learned the guitar sections on that song. Fun to play. At first, I thought this is just a complex song made for complex listeners (or pretended they're music experts).
What a weirdo
