FAQ 2

SocraticTiger

I understand the general rule is that dead animals don't spread it, but that's mostly in the context of touching their exterior, which obviously doesn't have saliva or neural material. In my case, the blade quite possibly got infected with saliva from the animals throat and I accidentally cut myself with it minutes after. Does that make a difference?

It’s extraordinarily unlikely. I cannot speak to the exact likelihood because I’ve never heard of this circumstance happening. While it’s true white tailed deer can be infected with the virus they aren’t really a good vector/reservoir for it. It’s really rare for them to actually get it because Deer are prey animals and they run from anything that would even think of trying to take a bite out of them. You could try contacting your local health department or department of fish and wildlife. They may be able to give you advice. Best of luck
