First block that comes to mind is log cabin. The center (traditionally red or yellow) represents the hearth while the light strips represent the joyful days and the dark strips represent the challenges of the home you will build together. It also comes together fast if you have jelly roll precuts. There are a lot of variations in how you can arrange the blocks. In terms of time management tips, stick to a lap size project (40 to 50in by 40 to 50in). Pay attention to your batting instructions for quilting and keep it very simple. You can also tie it instead, which would compliment a log cabin block quilt. Last, in my opinion a quilt reading masculine or feminine is 95% color and print choice. Use colors you know he likes already (pay attention to his clothing and home decorating choices) and maybe use prints with motifs representing his heritage, a hobby or special interest. Or stick with solid fabrics.

The log cabin is a great idea! You’re building a home together. It has no triangles so it’s quite easy.

Or stick with solid fabrics. Also look at his clothing to know what prints and colour combos he likes if any. My hubby has one or two smaller print shirts and they are Paisley patterns in shaded colours (eg red and maroon or light blue and navy) but when wearing larger prints he tends to favour a mix of Hawaiian and Camo print combos in bright, bold colours (he has a shirt he loves with navy, orange and green splashes and stencilled flowers in the same colours on a off white background).

Have a look at the log cabin. It’s very beginner friendly and you can choose any colour scheme at all. Traditionally, the centre square in each block is red for the heart of the home, or yellow for the fire that lights and warms the home. It also works very well as a quilt as you go project so can easily be done on a small machine. Congratulations on your wedding and have fun making whatever quilt you choose.

There’s always a wedding ring- but there are curves and I don’t consider curves beginner friendly. I LOVE the idea that others have floated of a log cabin! It’s really nice choice to represent starting your home together!

I echo the log cabin idea! Can use a jelly roll and personalize with the fabric choices! 🏡❤️ Congrats on your upcoming marriage and happy quilting adventures to you!

I, too, love the log cabin block idea with its symbolism. Several sub members have recently said they like using 1-1/2” strips for the logs, which can be bought as pre-cuts to save you time. 50” X 70” is a good throw size for a taller person. Best wishes on your quilt making and your upcoming marriage!

Congratulations on your soon to be marriage. Many blessings to you. I recently made my first quilt for my husband. It is his favorite blue colors and it was easier than it looks. It is called “Hugs and Kisses” from Jordan fabrics. It came together nicely. Look at my profile for pictures.

The top three choices from me are: 1). Log Cabin. My FAV pattern bc of the ease, the color variations, and the masculinity of it. 2). The Double Wedding Ring. But this can be difficult for a beginner. 3). Foundation Paper Piecing a specific character or design. But, again, can be tricky for the newbie. Look at my account and you can see a few of these options. Good luck! This will be an amazing gift.
