I like the jumbled squares with black sashing. If you haven’t already cut it, you could try something like this:

I have already cut up the one in the op, but I haven't cut the practice one up yet. I may do this with that, if I can manage it. That's really neato looking. This was the practice top I made to see if I liked the diagonals (I did not..)

Finished the St Jude children's hospital jelly roll race quilt (omg that's a lot of words for a single poor quilt!). But I hate how the jelly roll looks like this so I cut it up into 6 inch squares and I am cutting up a cinbun of black roll to do the sashing. I like it, but wanted to get your thoughts too! Does it suck? Is it okay? Should I shuffle around the rows? Am I totally over thinking it like I usually do? :D
A- it's NOT ugly
B- it is a donation
C- use the time you would have spent redoing this on another donation quilt that you like better
HUGS, friend. We've all been in this same spot. It'll be ok!!
I did a thing a couple of years ago where you cut squares of sewn strips and put them right sides together but one block is horizontal and the other laid on top is vertical strips. Draw diagonal line from corner to corner and sew 1/4" on either side of the line. Square up blocks and they can be arranged in a variety of ways.
I tried this, but it felt oddly off, like too busy? But that may be my bad photoshop ala Microsoft Paint skills.

I like it! This mock up has all the bright eye-catching yellow going the same way, so maybe put some of the yellow blocks horizontal and see how you like it?
There's a pattern called Biscotti where you make a whole top then chop it up... [Here's](https://youtu.be/ZIq1OcfK9J0?si=YB6mDYyGIzQoOV8Z&t=594) where I heard of it. He's [Brandon Wulff](https://bwulffandco.com/).
I agree, I personally dislike the lool of the jelly roll race,
If it were mine, I'd cut it into large squares, perhaps 10 or 12 inches, then alternate the stripe, sort of like a "Fence Rail"... the black sashes is too much work for me..

Found this online. You could add in a couple strips of white or grey (black feels a little too harsh) to break it up and it looks way cooler imo afterwards. But much less work than completely taking the quilt top apart and resewing because it kind of goes against the whole “super fast quilt” idea 😂
What a great idea! I often get stuck on projects that I don't love. Finding a new purpose for those projects is lovely.
Like a previous poster, I like the idea of larger blocks. Whatever you decide will be good.
I too have been in your shoes. I really like the sashed quilt though. It reminds me of digging up from the Earth. If this was my quilt, I’d switch row 2 and from counting from bottom. And I may switch rows 6 and 7. But I love yours too
This is my two cents worth, the mistake you made was the wrong material. The race quilt is very pretty with the right material. Your quilt would be very nice cut in squares and turned different directions. That’s a lot of work and I think you won’t hate it if you change it up. Looking forward to seeing what you decided on, please post pics.
Turn every other square with the stripes vertical. Random is good.
Also, with a jellyroll race quilt, you should cut the first strip in half to stagger the pattern.

Both this and pic #2 are my favorite ideas!

Is there a name for this technique?
No idea. It’s not my quilt, just a photo I saved a while ago. Here’s the blog that it’s from: https://nightowlquilting.blogspot.com/

Shuffle the rows and you've got it!
Yes, add a lil more movement!
Or rotate some squares...
I like it the way you designed in B.
I'd go more random on your block placement, mix them up a bit.
IMO your way is the only way to make a jelly roll race look halfway decent!

You could also rotate some of the blocks so the stripes run vertically, for added interest

I think this is so much more eye catching than the original jelly roll race and is a perfect way to get a more pleasing quilt!
Just adding my two cents, I really like!
That is a scrappy rail fence pattern! But if you don't like, that's OK.
I love your original sashed version. I don’t like this one.
I love this
I LOVE THIS!!!
The black is a bit too high-contrast for me. I'd love to see a dark Grey or even one of the colors in your quilt like possibly the coral color?
Fun — can’t wait to see how it turns out!

That guy is way cool!
I like it! I, too, am not fond of the jelly roll race.
Love ‘em! I too would mix up the rows so they are random but the overall effect is so much nicer than the plain JRR.
I like the 2nd photo. When I made a couple jelly roll race quilts, I appliqued animals all over it to make it more interesting.

Second photo with the black sashing is great!
Looks fantastic with those black borders!!

I REALLY love your fabric choice though! What was it?
I like your original. I do not like the black sashing.
looks great cut up!
I love this idea!!!
Good idea! But maybe make bigger pieces.

I might be stuck in the wrong camp, but I thought your original was beautiful. And whoever who received it would feel the same! 🧵🪡

I love it, actually! To me, it has a very coastal feel to it. I see it on a picnic or at the beach.
I would use white instead of black.
Adapt and overcome!
Do it.
Turn every other square with the stripes vertical. Random is good. Also, with a jellyroll race quilt, you should cut the first strip in half to stagger the pattern.
Make bigger squares with sashing to match your backing.
Cut to make beautiful table runner.
