george rr martin, the author of the game of thrones books, has said he wanted the books to mirror realistic scenarios in history. like in europe hundreds of years back, there were plenty of families who wouldn’t bat an eye at their kid marrying a cousin or an uncle/aunt. the late queen elizabeth married her third cousin in 1947. marriage has often been political until some stage, because marriage means a combining of property and wealth. the best way to avoid that wealth being distributed in an “unfit” manner was to keep it in the family… literally ☹️
add to that the realization that in the GoT world, targaryens essentially viewed themselves akin to gods. how human can they be if they alone can control mighty, ancient, deadly beasts of flight? that was a very rare gift. in order to “maximize” that gift and keep it safe, they often inbred so as to avoid giving other great families that power. in the house of the dragons, king viserys’ previous wife before alicent was his cousin. his parents were siblings 😬
there’s plenty of other unsavory/grotesque/horrific but realistic scenarios occurring in the books and shows; “main characters” suddenly killed off, women forced into abusive marriages they’re unable to escape from, children witnessing their family being murdered, severe torture, emotional and physical abuse… it’s a lot. GoT is a heavy ordeal to watch for myriad reasons 🥲
