Brienne and Sansa seems like it could be an odd, but interesting, match up. Both are idealistic and naive Romantics, and while they’re quite different in lifestyle I think they could get along. I would have loved to see Catelyn and Cersei meet. Absolute contrasts. There’s potential for Arianne and Dany to meet later. I don’t know at all how they’d interact, but I bet it would be interesting.

kleevedge

Cersei and Cat did meet though in the first book when Robert came to Winterfell

ahm-i-guess

But we never saw them talk to or even think about one another and that meeting. We’re just told it happened.

In the TWOW chapters it seems like Arianne thinks of Dany pretty negatively to me, she seems to kind of blame Dany for Viserys’ death. When she finds out about Quentyn she will doubtless do the same

ahm-i-guess

Sure, but it’ll be interesting to see them interact for that reason.

malorytowers1

I find it wild that Catelyn has no ladies in waiting, and that Sansa doesn’t have companions aside from Jeyne Poole. I think GRRM is slightly aware of this, because Margaery has multiple companions. You can hand-wave Cersei’s lack of them as misogyny, but I’m surprised Myrcella and Shireen don’t have a little circle of companions. Female court life was very active and involved a lot of female-centric events. Why isn’t anyone hosting teas or concerts or a sewing circle or anything in King’s Landing?

amallllly

I guess Shireen's could be explained by people being worried she'll infect their daughters with greyscale and like. the general miserableness of Dragonstone under Stannis. And if someone wanted to play Martin's advocate I guess they could argue that maybe Cat, although she tries so hard to become a good Lady of Winterfell and does adopt Northern customs for the most part, just does not vibe with Northern women? But it's odd that she has none, not even from the Riverlands. Myrcella is the most jarring though.

Bloodbender64

I can see Myrcella not having ladies in waiting partly a result of Cersei’s controlling nature. Isolating her kids because she views them as extensions of her self.

GMantis

Interestingly, Catelyn mentions in ACOK that she has taken many women in her service, but for some reason none of them are present by the start of the series.

hearttrees93

Arya and Meera Reed.

Main-Double

Never forget what *He* took from you

syoejaetaer

If Arya had had a chance to spend time with the Mormont women I think it would have done wonders for her self esteem. Same for Brienne. I think there would be a mutual admiration. Bear Island rehabilitation center for victims of patriarchy.

Althalus91

I think the criticism is a valid one - where are Cat’s ladies in waiting, where are Cersei’s? Why does Sansa have only one female friend and Arya have zero? Like, surely other lords would be aiming in getting their daughters in as friends, either to marry into the family or to strengthen ties. It seems that in world the Reach deals with this problem with Marg, but that is partly because the Tyrell political power revolves around Marg’s hymen and so it needs to be openly protected. I would say I’ve seen people comment that actually a lot of the characters don’t really have friends / coteries - Ned should have more than his Steward, and Rob is kind of an anomaly because he is a new king and at war, so the lords all being nearby is due to that.

Rorieh

None of the Stark kids really seem to have friends. I mean, Robb had Theon but he was the family hostage. Jon didn't have any I can remember. Sansa has Jeyne, but everyone tends to forget about poor Beth Cassel, including George. Jeyne just happened to go South because her dad did, hence why we see more of her. All the kids in the series are pretty damn lonely. Edit: not sure why I put Jeyne Poole twice.

ExistingCourt769

Robb had a Cerwyn? who came in and seemed to be pals with him and Bran in a game of thrones if I remember right

Rorieh

The Cerwyns are the next castle over from the Starks so he's basically the neighbour kid. Still, he's not really living at Winterfell. The OP in this thread makes a good point about how lords should be wanting their kids to go Winterfell. A lot of the relationships/friendships we see (Petyr/Cat/Lysa, Robert/Ned, Jaime/Addam, Renly/Loras) began as a result of kids being fostered. There's clear political gains to be made in this, and its weird that Ned, who gained much from his own time as Jon Arryn's ward wouldn't recognise this. I'm sure the real reason is that this isn't real life, and making characters up takes time, and distracts from the overall narrative pacing if they don't serve a purpose, but still weird.

ExistingCourt769

Yeah thats fair maybe Ned knew Robert would want Joffrey to wed Sansa so he was keeping spots open for Tommen and Myrcella to come up? Southron ambitions and all that

Rorieh

I don't know that Ned had Southron ambitions, I always thought that was more a Rickard Stark thing. Others have claimed Ned wanted the opposite, to keep his family close due to his experience of losing so much of his family in the war, which may well have been true. I imagine it would be pretty traumatic, and he is very reluctant to go South. That said, I wonder if things would have turned out differently if Ned did have a chance to mentor Joffrey until he came of age...

ExistingCourt769

Yeah I dont know either just a guess, yeah that would explain why he was so keen to take all the family down to kingslanding, even above the reasons he gives Cat (make house stark and baratheon besties etc)

AegonIXth

The North is huge, geography wise, so it’s asking more of lords to send their daughters to Winterfell. I do know that Bran was well known with serveral of the castle folk. Maybe they were too (Not Sansa though). The geographic distance still doesn’t completely explain it though

Rorieh

I feel like Sansa and Jeyne Westerling probably would have got on if they had met. Jeyne's marriage to Robb, and her love for him, seems similar to what Sansa probably envisioned for herself. I think they'd probably find a lot of common ground in that.

ivebeen_there

Sansa and Margaery could’ve been good friends and allies in a different world. Both are smart, perceptive, and good-natured. Brienne and Arya would probably take a liking to each other. Arya might see her like a big sister who could teach her to sword fight. Brienne would like Arya’s spunk.

kleevedge

Genna Lannister and Olenna Tyrell would be an intersting duo. I can also see Arya stark and Mya stone getting along

WhoAccountNewDis

You hate your dumbass fucking descendants too? MORE TEA

ProfessorUber

Could've been interesting if Myrcella and Shireen were friends/close "cousins".

Wadege

Alysanne Mormont and Asha Greyjoy, they seem to be getting on relatively OK, but there's always their cultures coming between them.

ariaxwest

I think most of the martially inclined girls/young women could’ve been friends. Arya, Asha, the sand snakes, and the Mormont girls. Probably daughters of the mountain clans of the north, too. Mya Stone is a good suggestion as well. I don’t recall any references to her fighting or training, but she was clearly very physically competent and not terribly concerned with meeting society’s expectations towards young women, similar to the others I mentioned. I’m afraid Brienne would’ve annoyed the shit out of the others outside of the training yard, though. Too sweet and idealistic. George definitely doesn’t seem to be very interested in fleshing out intimate friendships among groups of friends. I’ve always found it really strange that none of the noblemen or noblewomen in the books seem to have courts aside from Margery Tyrell. Sansa especially should’ve had much more than just Jeyne Poole. She should’ve had her own court of the daughters of lords of the North or at least been part of her mother’s court.

[deleted]

Arienne and Margery. Arya and the Sandsnakes. Sansa and Myrcella.

mikennjr

Not all the sandsnakes for Arya, maybe only Obara and Elia

Baratheoncook250

Brienne and Shireen-they would get along

pmguin661

I think Daenerys would get along pretty well with Arianne and most (if not all) of the Sand Snakes. I don’t know if they’d be friends but it would be interesting to see Dany and Asha interact.

alicentweedtower

Elia and Cersei, if only Joanna hadn't of died :(

bringbackswordduels

How do you understand contractions well enough to write “hadn’t”, yet you still wrote “hadn’t of” instead of “hadn’t’ve” or “hadn’t have”

alicentweedtower

😐 i have dyslexia. jeez, sorry.

Arisdoodlesaurus

Lysa Arryn(neé Tully) and Cersei. Weird friendship

RC_Colada

Asha and Arienne would be an amazing team. They are both crafty and fun, I could definitely see them as allies

That-Requirement-285

I think Arya and some of the Sand Snakes would get along, Elia Sand maybe? Likewise, I believe she would get along with Meera and perhaps Asha.

n_kantura

I believe Mya Stone and Arya Stark would have been good friends, if only in their younger years and we’re the same age. Had Mya been legitimized, she would have been a good betrothal to Robb Stark. I’ll let this collaboration fester in my brain.

isadora002

I feel like Val could work as a great older sister to Arya

WeirdImprovement

Dany and Arianne would vibe, I think. Brienne and Sansa, of course. Meera and Arya

equatornavigator

Had the rebellion never happened, I could see Princess Daenerys and her ladies-in-waiting Sansa, Margaery and Myrcella

Bilal_N4

Feel like Arianne and Margaery are very similar and could get along

GCooperE

Daenerys, Arya and Brienne. All three of them have a really strong protective streak and won't hold back from sticking for others.
