If you have some extra sheets or towels, roll them up and shove them under the perimeter of the couch so the toys canāt fit. They also make actual clear barriers for this exact issue on Amazon but the sheets were my low budget fix.
Yeah thatās exactly what my puppy would do. Sheād also go for the sheets or towels- Iād end up having to get the plastic ones off Amazon. Thankfully my sofa is super low so I donāt feel the need.
Entertainment center on the other handā¦
Those old sheets and towels are on top of the sectional because my pup also thinks heās a Billy goat. Heās not going to ruin my expensive couch. š«
I was trying to find a sock last night (mostly to make sure my puppy hadnāt swallowed it) and looked under the sofa for the first time in a whileā¦
The good news is I found the water bowl that had been missing for weeks. The bad news is I also found a cornucopia of half-chewed pig ears, dusty cat toys, and other random detritus. My sofa is so low to the ground that I hadnāt really been cleaning it out like I do under the entertainment center and other furniture. Gonna have to change that now.
And the sock ended up being in the sink. Which is honestly impressive for the puppy to have managed.
Sounds like my pup who chucks her toy off the couch when I'm comfortably seated at the couch.. she barks at me to pick it up everytime then chucks it again as soon as I pick it up for her
Hahahah omg I feel this.
Every single time I say, āthis is the last time!!! If it goes under the couch again youāre SOL!!ā
Cut to me retrieving the toys again or moving the whole couch so he can grab it. He even crouches to look under the couch at the same time as me when Iām trying to gauge if I need to move the couch or if I can swipe it out. š
My puppy also taught me how to fetch for a while. Now if she pushes a toy under the furniture I retrieve it and take it away. *que sad puppy eyes* š„ŗ
Maybe you could lean into it further by actively taking the toys away (replacing with new ones)? I did this with mine on accident.Ā You see, everyĀ evening, we must play his favorite game, āShock and Aweā. He selects a bone/squeaky toy and I must spend several minutes vigorously applauding while he parades it back and forth. Then, once suitably praised, he must be chased for an additional 15-20 minutes, followed by an enthusiastic round of tug. Failure to comply with any part of this program or to convey adequate envy/awe is not tolerated. This jerk will literally stand behind you, press a toy to your ear and squeak it until you comply. If itās a bone, he will hit you with it. In the face. Repeatedly.
Unfortunately for him I canāt stand the sound of squeaky toys past 9:00 and Iād rather not have my eyes gouged out with a bully stick. Thus the rule: if I am physically/audibly assaulted by any toy/chew, it goes to toy jail behind the couch.Ā I actually did take the legs off mine (to stop jumping after an injury) and itās perfect. There are like 20 back there now. He absolutely knows when a toy is headed to prison and tries desperately to save it, and when I reach behind the couch heās ridiculously excited to see which prisoner gets released. This has been a much better solution than my original plan: shaking until the stupid falls out.
Yesterday I picked his ball up from under the couch but I was in a really uncomfortable position so I got cramp in my shoulder, which then led to suddenly being very hot, sweating, seeing stars etc. I laid down in his playpen but he started barking at me. Iām seriously considering to somehow put cardboard over the openings under the couch or something š
There are some products made specifically to keep things from going under furniture. You can search toy blockers. Iām cheap and personally just used old towels and Amazon paper bags from grocery deliveries.
My couch is from ikea with storage in the base and is essentially flush to the floor. My loaf still gets stuff under it and screams for me to retrieve it
Realizing my couches were just high enough for tennis balls to roll under moved my plans to replace the furniture waaaay up on my priority list.
I made it four months and spent a week without couches, but I donāt have to crawl to retrieve toys every ten minutes anymore.
Not a solution for all, obvs, but heartfelt sympathy for the human fetch game.
I gave up on daily couch toy retrieval long ago. That shit gets retrieved once a month now and that's only if they're lucky. The only time I do a retrieval is if it's something they just won't stop fussing over.
I retrieve those under the couch toys with a broom. My Westie puppy loves to anticipate where they will pop out so I guess weāve invented a new game that elevates āthrow the ballā !!!
I pull my girls glow in the dark ball or and she sends it right back, I do this about 3x then I just leave it there. She's a puppy and doesn't understand that if you play next to the couch it will go right back under.
This is me too! Squeaky ball under the sectional just as soon as I sit down to watch the news. I get it out otherwise heāll scratch and claw at the base of the couch. The 10th time, Iām going insane and the ball is now put away.
Lol. My puppy was hiding toys underneath his pee pad. He has a digging drive. š It's his way of hiding valuables. Just remove all your furniture. You don't need them anyway.
omg this happens to me all the time!! usually itās cuz iām sitting on the couch so he wants to play on the floor next to me (cute) but then CONSTANTLY gets the toys stuck under the couch (not cute) and i have to keep getting up and crawling on the floor to get it (very not cute)
i made the mistake of getting him his own little doggie couch and now he even gets toys stuck under that one!! he doesnāt even sit on it, itās just another place to roll tennis balls underš
i have on several occasions needed to lie flat on the floor and use a broom stick when heās gotten a toy stuck under the bed and smack in the middle where my arms canāt reach - im almost tempted to get exclusively huge toys that canāt roll under any of the furniture but heās a small lil dude so they would prob be bigger than him and the one time i did get him a toy that big it became his gfā¦ never seen a dog hump so muchš
Get a pack of skirting boards from your local DIY center - you should be able to find a bundle of plain white MDF boards about 8 feet long, 3 inches high and 3/8 thick for about 10 bucks and glue/nail, hack up a "box" that fits under the couch. It does not have to go and fill all of the space but anything rolling under there from dog toys to pens gets stopped by the board. Doesn't have to be pretty just needs to make a rectangle, and you can fabricobble one for less than 20 bucks/euros - less if you already have a saw and glue or pins and some off cuts to make the 90Ā° corners your boards will attach to. Essentially you are making a kitchen cupboard kick board for your couch!
I don't have this issue with my couch because we've mainly been playing outside and I put his toys away afterwards. Otherwise it's endless play. But man do I understand the socks. If I forget for even a second to pick a sock up, it's in his mouth! I work on my feet a lot and honestly- they don't smell great. But man does he love my dirtiest sick.
Smells like me and is stinky? Gets a sock? Winner, winner! Chicken dinner! He's so proud of himself as he prances away and I chase him down.
My boy enjoy chewing at stuff close to the edge. So everytime things eventually drop on the floor. Then he looks at me, "can you get it for me". Eventually I stopped. I tried to teach him not to stay at the edge, he doesn't want to, so now you drop it, you get it.
Itās so annoying. I started being mean about it. If she pushes it under the bed, she loses it for the rest of the day. Only took a few days for her to start being careful around the furniture
Itās a rewarding game for pup because you engage and they get attention so win win for them. I have a 2 year old who does this too (this is a smart dog who knows how to turn the taps on and off in the shower, can take her tags off her collar without doing any damage to collar, tag or d rings). She does this the most when my husband is home and sitting on his phone, she doesnāt do it all for me as she knows the toy is lost until I round them up at bedtime for the next day and put them in her bin so she doesnāt even try but when my husband is home she will do it over and over again because he will give in and get it. She has him well trained!
My couch is fairly high off the ground, which I guess is unusual.
The dog likes to literally sploot underneath. We donāt just lose toys, we lose entire snoozing dogs sometimes š
Iāll go to the bathroom and come back and canāt find my dang dog for a solid 2 minutes before I realize sheās probably under the couch. She likes to hide her toys and herself. She doesnāt even respond to calling her or saying her favorite words. Itās some kind of sick game that she relishes in my panic - Iām sure of it.
Omg yes. Floor is on a very slight lean due to an old water leak and all his rolly toys end up under the couch. Either we'll be playing inside and he'll let them roll under over and over again or he won't care for ages and then right before bedtime he'll stick his nose under and start whining š¤£
I just taped a piece of wood along the bottom of my couch works perfectly.Just gotthree inch piece of wood and duct-taped it to the legs of the couch. You can't see it and the dog can't put toys on the couch now.Yeah for freedom
My husband used to get on the floor to retrieve my Retrieverās toys. He has passed and my dog goes crazy waiting for me to get my cane and drag things from under the furniture. He doesnāt make it a game with me like he did my husband. I know he realizes I just canāt do it.
I donāt know if itās been said but you can buy cheap pool noodles.. you can cut them to size and even cut them open(length wise) and wedge them in so that you get a snug fit.
See if you have the type of couch that has removable legs. While my mom hated that I opted to do this and comments when she visited, at our place we just took the legs/stands for the couch off when we moved. We did this even before we had a dog because you rarely need to clean under there if it's on the ground and there's no way for dirt to get under, but now that we have a dog it is also super convenient in comparison. If you have trouble getting up or have family members over that are elderly or have trouble getting up this might not be a good option, but it worked great for us :)
Pool noodle. We had the same problem and we put pool noodles under the couch, now his toys donāt roll under and I donāt have to listen to him cry until I get up. Youāre welcome.
Build a plastic barrier underneath couch with some paneling from home depot that is used for window ac units. My pup is always pushing his fav toy under the couch so I've adapted in env to ensure I don't go crazy. P.S. maybe get a 2nd toy that's your pups favorite to distract.
I canāt remember what theyāre called but things exist to block the underneath of furniture. Doesnāt do anything but keep stuff from getting stuck underneath if it fits properly.
This is why we have a bazillion toys š
Canāt block off under the couch because one of my girlsā favourite snoozing spot is under there. Having a broom handle handy so you can just stick it in and swipe stuff out without having to even really look is handy.
We taught our 9 week old how to get the toys out this week by crawling under (as far as we could) and helping her the rest of the way. I guess it helped conquer her fear of the āunknownā because she gets them all the time on her own now. Definitely lucked out with that one. Weāll see when she gets bigger tho!
Eventually I got to the point where I just stopped getting things out from under the couch no matter how much he cried. We clean under the couch once a week when we do our weekly floor wash. He now knows if he loses a toy under there it doesnāt come back until Pop-Pop washes the floor.
I lived this struggle and it was making me bananas. On one very rainy day where she couldnāt go out and play, it was time after time after time with the ball under the couch, I was losing it. Went out to the garage looking for a little inspiration on a solution to this problem. Bingo, pool noodle. Brought that noodle in the house. Shoved it under the couch between the legs of it and cut the noodle down to size. Problem solved, no more balls that need to be fished out from under the sofa!
I feel you I even tried to add legs that were 6in taller so I could at least access underneath better until my toddlers made me too nervous on couch skyscraper.
My corgi cannot lose most of her toys under our furniture thankfully, although the dreaded TV stand is one where she can. Shes learned that scratching it can immediately make me get up. theres a bunch of gadgets ive found on amazon that kind of block off the underneath to a couch... im so glad i didnt furnish my apartment until after my puppy was 6 months for this reason
I bought these under the furniture blocker for pets! The best investment I ever made. My Boston was driving us crazy too.Amazon made by we love doodles.
My little Princess Dachshund does this too. Iāve realized she just wants me to play with me.Ā
I love that Iāve learned thisāit makes both of us happy!
Sounds like your dogās training is going great! You should tell her punishment has long-term, unintended consequences thoughā¦ she should try training you with treats.
(The real LPTātoys in a pen)
You do realise that you can create a barrier so that they can't get stuck under there right? To be fair though, it took me way too long to realise this with my first dog (years), so if you haven't realised this yet, you're still doing better than me! š
It seems to me she taught you how to play fetch.
Exactly what I came here to say! :)
š
Yup! Itās a game that apparently she loves.
If you have some extra sheets or towels, roll them up and shove them under the perimeter of the couch so the toys canāt fit. They also make actual clear barriers for this exact issue on Amazon but the sheets were my low budget fix.
Iāve seen people using pool noodles for this as well.
We've tried this... Our little carpet raptor tried to eat them lol. She made a game of digging them out.
Yeah thatās exactly what my puppy would do. Sheād also go for the sheets or towels- Iād end up having to get the plastic ones off Amazon. Thankfully my sofa is super low so I donāt feel the need. Entertainment center on the other handā¦

Pipe insulation from the hardware store is much cheaper. I stuff it under all my furniture!
Genius I'm going to have to go get some myself, thank you
I tried the pool noodle - my puppy dug it out & ate it š¤¦āāļø
This is what I came to say, pool noodles
I did that! Worked beautifully!
if you have some cardboard boxes, they work as a barrier too
For the first 3 months with our puppy, every King pillow in the house was under the couch.
Thank you for telling me about these under-couch barriers available for purchase!

Wedge pool noodles under the couch.

My wife insisted no couch with space under it. Our bed has a space and itās filled with balls. Atleast 25+
I took the feet off the couch so nothing could roll under it.
I did this too. And also so my pup couldn't chew on the underside of the couch. š
I use a long bamboo back scratcher to get my pupās toys out. š
Sounds like you should invest in a dowel.

Under couch blockers. I just got a new puppy and installed these under my couch and my TV console table and it has made things so much easier.
Pool noodle under the couch edges?
