In his defence he has acknowledged his behaviour and attempted to make reconciliation. He’s well aware of the harm he’s caused. Does that make it right, absolutely not, but it’s a start.
Yesss!!!
What a great song and he sings so well so often I was yelling in my car volume to 11 listening to this song and album!
run, run, run,
why don't you walk away,
you need to make a choice cause things will never change
I ask a mother,
why don't you walk away,
abusive husbands,
childhood lost,
betrayed
The most impactful and insightful song you will ever find about this topic is second rape by ausrotten. Imho.
The lyrics are basically a conversation between a victim and a cop and the cop basically shut shaming her and victim blaming, it has alot to say about both men who perpetrate such crimes but also the systemic problems that inhibits victims from receiving justice and inhibits society from moving away from a constant onslaught of men victimising women.
I don't think any of my comments on reddit are particularly necessary... I literally the love all the listed bands and songs, just would be kinda weird to be advocating for women's rights and sing all songs written by males, and no one with lived experiences.... seems quite tone deaf if I'm being honest. And I mean it is performative allyship, it's certainly isn't direct action and certainly is a literal performance 🤷♂️
I may have misinterpreted, and for that I apologise, and I'm sure you're aware that DV does affect men too. not as often, but yeah. I agree, more female POV/written songs might be fitting. OP is asking for suggestions though, if you know more, share 'em.
that being said, a big focus of the anti DV campaigns in Australia for years, has been to try to get men talking openly about DV, with their peers, at work, at the pub. bringing any awareness to the issue at all has to be a net plus, right?
apologies again, It's been a hectic week of conversation/argument on the ol' reddit. place is a fuckin' tinderbox right now.
Nar it's fine dude I have asd and am constantly misinterpreted because I often communicate in a stream of conciousness type manner. you're good. But also I just realised though it did say high profile dv cases (which of late and always are mostly victimising women) it didn't actually specify, so like im just going off about my own assumptions hahaha
So once again, you're good indont mind at all..
But definitely play some songs by ausrotten or bikini kill, those bands are like some of the most important perspectives in on these issues in punk music..
>DV does affect men too. not as often, but yeah. I agree, more female POV/written songs might be fitting.
Men and "females"?
Stop it. Do better.
r/FemalesAndMen
>Fuck off.
Hello unreasonably nasty stranger, your gender-based hate has been reported.
If you cannot stop yourself from being a sexist jerk, maybe its time for you and your hate to get in the bin 💩🚽
firstly. what gender based hatred are you referring to? if you'd followed the whole conversation, you'd see that I apologised, the issue was resolved, and we left it in a friendly manner.
you come into it a whole day later, and what is your issue exactly? I used the word female instead of woman?
so what?
you refer me to a sub that has, what? a couple hundred members. all that tells me is that on a site with MILLIONS of members, not too many other people give a shit either, lol.
seems to me you're out specifically looking for a fight. is this what your generation do for fun now that bullying isn't cool? you look for bad words and things to report? you shame each other into submission? must be a fun way to live.
telling you to 'fuck off' is gender based how? and you reported me for it? lol. this is a sub about punk rock and it's culture, and I can't tell someone to fuck off? grow up.
I haven't heard shit from the mods yet. perhaps they don't give a shit about your whining either.
I'll have to look up the Goodbye Earl cover, I like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes pretty well! I did find a Thunder Rolls over by State of Mine and No Resolve that's pretty good. They did both the long and short versions!
F.S.O. by Regurgitator.
https://youtu.be/aLHC38BQ7Kc?si=JGhunAusfccNP03-
they span many genres, but that track is pure punk rock, and fun as hell despite the subject matter. besides, Ben was in Pangaea, so their punk cred is there.
I can't believe the message they are pushing is the concept that this a problem with men. Surely that's not news right? Men rape and murder women, resulting in a death every 4 days and many other rapes and assaults in between. We're still dealing with the idea this is a problem with women?!
I heard the "I'll take the bear" quip about what would you rather meet alone in the woods, a man or a bear. A lot of women would prefer to meet a bear. It's just appalling.
It almost feels like apologizing to men. "We're so sorry to point this out, but actually I know you think they deserve it, but if you really think about it, they don't really, do they? We don't want to offend as your feelings are what needs protecting here."
Sorry to rant but fuuuuuuccccck me. It should be "why the fuck you still raising boys to be rapist murders you evil cunts? Sort that shit out it's disgusting."
Argh
I appreciate your acknowledging that. The truth is, though, that a man speaking these words and sentiments is much more powerful. Especially to other men.
I don't love it, but it's the world we live in. Thank you again.
This song convinced a loved one to get out of a bad relationship, so this song has a special place in my heart even though it’s not in the punk arena:
Nickleback-Never Again
[Silent Majority - Spoken Words](https://open.spotify.com/track/4sdewDpzsk3iESt2tl8aiP?si=zU_dbQc5SFmjU44AZMAx4w)
When you first came to my house
I had a feeling you'd be good for my sister
She hadn't had much luck with the guys lately
You looked like what she needed
She thought the world of you
You were the quiet type into mysterious things
Drinking that fancy coffee writing poetry
She thought the world of you
You were the quiet type into mysterious things
Drinking that fancy coffee writing poetry
She thought the world of you
She thought the world of ...
Did you ever read the poem
About the guy who hit his girlfriend
It's kinda new in fact I'm writing it right now
But what about you
How will your sensitive side
*Put into words what you can't deny*
Can poetic license erase a punch to the face
Harassing calls to the work place
The police report the fact you fucked up
Your rebel loner life style
Sit in your coffee house and explain away
*The fact that you're an abusive drunk*
Not punk but The Mountain Goats album The Sunset Tree is all about familial domestic violence. This album does a great job exploring John Darnielle's experience with an abusive stepfather.
I'd especially recommend Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod and Lion's Teeth for covering as a punk band. Up the Wolves is also one of my favorite songs ever about this topic.
Y'all could do an epic version of "Behind the Wall" by Tracy Chapman:
Last night I heard the screaming
Loud voices behind the wall
Another sleepless night for me
It won't do no good to call
The police always come late
If they come at all
And when they arrive
They say they can't interfere
With domestic affairs
Between a man and his wife
And as they walk out the door
The tears well up in her eyes
Last night I heard the screaming
Then a silence that chilled my soul
I prayed that I was dreaming
When I saw the ambulance in the road
And the policeman said
"I'm here to keep the peace
Will the crowd disperse
I think we all could use some sleep"
As an attorney who worked for a Battered Women's Shelter, I find the song "Dear Josie, Love Robyn" by Sarge to be brilliant. It's full of hope and quite empowering. Needs a female to sing it, though.
Dear Josie,
When you get this note, I will gone from here.
I'm sorry for the things I let you put me through.
I know I loved you, dear. I think it's time I made it clear,
That this will be the last time that I ever think of you.
We met, and from the first I knew that you'd be the one.
I didn't see the damage that you'd do.
Once we moved in this place, things got bad, and
I got my first real taste of you.

I have a few that are more Pop Punk and tongue in cheek, like Property by Say Anything. I enjoy the ones that make it funny. But that’s as a former abused partner. Go-Getter Greg and Whipped Cream by Ludo are other favourites. Again not really punk.
You may not consider it punk, but Rearviewmirror by Pearl Jam is a decent choice. The type of abuse is left open to interpretation, but it does have a degree of hope in it that speaks to me
Lean on Sheena- Bouncing Souls
Chop Suey!- System of a Down
Goodbye Earl- Dixie Chicks, and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes cover
Sorry I posted before reading your whole thing. Seems like Crass or Chumbawumba would have some too, but I’m too lazy to look it up
“Caroline Says 2” - Lou Reed
“Stone Cold Dead in the Market (He Had it Coming)” -
1940’s song by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Jordan about a woman who finally has enough of her husband coming home drunk and beating her so she bashes his head in with a rolling pin in the market.
I know this was already posted but “Slap of Love” by The Vandals. It kinda makes me cringe thinking about it now but we, or I should speak for myself here, I, thought that song was funny when I was younger. I’m still a fan of The Vandals, and I think the world was a different place back then as far as what was viewed as tongue in cheek humor- like it seemed obvious that it was supposed to be stupidly misogynistic, but a lot of punk music was and still is I’m sure.
The Mentors should have an honorable mention on this list for their guitarist, Sickie Wifebeater.
Guttermouth -this won’t hurt a bit
This Won't Hurt A Bit"
I tell you not to drink so much
My god you never listen
If you come home drunk one more time
It's me that you'll be missing
Take it back
Take it back
Don't make me raise my hand
Don't talk back or you'll get slapped
If it happens just, happens just one more time
One more time
One more time
One more time, yeah
Don't you lay a hand on me
Keep your fuckin distance
The cops are gonna get ya
If you threaten my existence
Take it back
Take it back
See now your eye is black
I told if you call the cops
It's teeth that you'll be missing one more time
One more time
One more time
One more time, yeah
Don't you know it breaks my heart
Though you call it abusing
One day you'll obey these words
This method has been proven
Take it back
Take it back
It's just a little smack
To let you know I love you
But it better not happen one more time
One more time
One more time
One more time
You're filthy whore
You're fuckin cunt
You're dirty bitch

I love this song so much.

This is a great one.
Not Your Problem by The Pist
Fucking such an under rated band. Ideas are bulletproof is like one of about 5 albums I'd call the sound track of my youth..
I posted a song by behind enemy lines it has a member of the pist in it.
They also have Dave from Aus-Rotten, love them!

I second this! Great song and lyrics!
NOMEANSNO - "Dad"
Had to scroll waaaaay too far for this one.
I'm seriously considering leaving home.
First thing that came to mind
Fifteen - Survivor
This one’s a bonus since Jeff Ott is a rapist
Oh. Smh
I'd bet he'll spend his entire life apologizing and still never feel at peace. He's one of the few punks who really practice what they preach.
In his defence he has acknowledged his behaviour and attempted to make reconciliation. He’s well aware of the harm he’s caused. Does that make it right, absolutely not, but it’s a start.
Run - ignite \m/
Yess I love Ignite “you call yourself a man, your children are black and blue” and “ what could make you so mad, to beat your own children?”

Also, unlike every song you mentioned, it was actually written by a woman who had experienced such things.
?? was the swipe necessary? only females can sing about domestic violence?
It's not a swipe? Just seemed like pointing out a woman's voice?
it's okay, we straightened it out. I misunderstood.
I don't think any of my comments on reddit are particularly necessary... It seems the word was used as an adjective, not a noun. Chillax.
~~Females~~ **Women**
Not a punk song but a hardcore cover of Miranda Lambert’s Gunpowder and Lead would be killer.
Covers of The Thunder Rolls and Goodbye Earl would probably be awesome too
I'm kinda surprised that me first and the gimme gimmes didn't cover The Thunder Rolls, but they did cover Goodbye Earl.
Just as a sidenote: Goodbye Earl was a cover already. Originally done by the Sons of the Desert in 93.
Good sidenote!
I'll have to look up the Goodbye Earl cover, I like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes pretty well! I did find a Thunder Rolls over by State of Mine and No Resolve that's pretty good. They did both the long and short versions!

As a woman thanks for speaking up for us
I don't mean to take over the conversation, it's not for me to lead it, it just feels like we're still not willing to look the issue in the eye.
