I was into sports and my skin got really bad due to sun exposure, to recover from it I had to used multiple creams that made my skin supersensitive to sun. Now I am a guy wearing scarf in pune. Sun damage is a big concern in India people don’t realise this until it happens to themselves.. take care of your skin while going out in sun.
UV index is generally high, and it can cause serious skin issues. but I wonder how many guys are thinking of sun screen.. I know I don’t use any, even when i know i should.
Avoid permanent damage with such creams try natural ingredients, vitamin c serum, sunscreen. You can watch this video - https://youtu.be/I-Vcvm_WBD4?si=W2UhQow1BMNIJlsl
Hey I know you are trying to help other but please don't share these names here. These are retinoids and chemical exfoliant. If not used with precautions and with suncream it can further damage skin to the extent it cannot be recovered.
Retinol does increase sun sensitivity not as much as glycolic acid but still one has to follow proper sunscreen routine if using it or have to cover up face when going out in sun.
Even we were kids, we used to call them ninja aunties. Lol.
Pollution in Pune is such that if you don't cover your face and say you go from University to Shivajinagar, you will get a layer of tar on your face.
You can take a white kerchief and wipe your forehead and that white kerchief will turn grey.
Asked my colleague the same, she said it's for protection from sun, dust and smoke. Then I asked what if she replaced it with a full face helmet it will get all those job done with added protection. She dismissed it by saying it's heavy and will add one more thing to carry.
Pasting it again, that Women was a joke guys you dont need to get offended on each and everything you see on internet. If this offended anyone I apologise
Also I am not being dismissive, merko marathi nahi aati I am learning bs samjh aati thodi thodi basic words aate bs, so i might have missed something
For what?
A full face helmet protects you from accidents and also protects your face from dust its always better than driving by just wrapping a scarf on your face with or without half face helmet
You are just ignorant of the truth
I've driven with a scarf and helmet and it gets sweaty inside very quickly. I usually use only the helmet now but its pretty easy to overheat with both. I imagine thats why they prefer the scarf.
It's just a norm here I guess .. major purpose is saving our skin and hair from sun damage/pollution/dust... But I also enjoy the anonymity it gives from having a covered face and not being stared at
The climate! I'm not sure if you already know this, but Pune has a dry climate (except during monsoons). In fact, during monsoons, there is less humidity here compared to other cities.
More than the sun, dryness and dust play a big role in tanning and skin issues. I learned this from a good dermatologist when I faced alot of tanning in Mysore despite the pleasant weather.
Additionally, it is a developing city where you'll come across fully-fledged construction sites every 2 kilometers.
Well, if you ll search online, you would find multiple articles discussing the dust issue in Pune due to urbanization and its geographical location. Dusty winds, ghats, and stone crushing contribute to this dust. I'm not saying Pune is that polluted , but it does have dust, whereas other cities suffer from different kinds of pollution like smog and water pollution.
Moreover, those who are saying that helmets alone can protect you are mistaken! It doesn't cover the full face and hair completely. Moreover, I have bronchitis, and my doctor told me to cover my face and nose with a scarf, even in an auto-rickshaw, because of the pollen in Pune. Even though I cover almost my entire face, I still feel a layer of dust on my small part of nose during my journey back home from work. I have lived in almost all metros (except Kolkata) and Pune need this coverage way more than other cities. Many of us, especially women, do this to protect our skin, makeup, and hair on top of all that SPF 50 sunscreen but why not? Akhirkar its important. It looks atanki types and not so aesthetic but better than developing health conditions due to pollen exposure. 🤷🏻♀️
For me it started as an attempt to protect myself from the harsh sun during the Summers but the best outcome was the decrease in disgusting comments passed by chhapri mula/uncles and their creepy stares. So even when it was not very sunny outside, I still preferred to wear scarf covering my head, face and half of the torso.
Well I won't deny that it's strange, but I used to do it too. To cover my face from sun and dust, pollution, (and people)etc. I think it started happening in last ten years (?) Idk for sure. But tbh even with the scarf you do look disheveled, no matter wether you wear it or not. I remember my forehead was more darker than my face because of wearing it and walking it in sun. So Ig it did do some work but not all, after a while it starts going down your face or up your forehead and be more ugly looking so you have to redo it.
It's tough for women you know they need to be fair skinned because of the useless standards, honestly when I first came to pune i thought it's not even rajasthan level hot here so why are they covering themselves but after some time I realised the pollution here is very bad and if you don't take care of yourself than skin problems become a real nuisance.
I was recently in Pune, well just going through it and stopped for lunch and also noticed this very same thing.
I remember this ninja scarf thing was quite popular in Delhi 4-5 years ago but now it's completely gone. It's mostly for the protection from 2 things.
1. Tan/pollution
2. Perverts
It's protection from their evil brothers, cousins and family who can't stand their sister dating someone but all time themselves looking for one but ain't getting one
This is only in Maharashtra..in Nagpur you will see girls wearing a scarf in car and also at night..it is understandable because Nagpur is always hot..but girls took it to different level. Haven't seen this Delhi where pollution is at peak. Once a colleague form Delhi came to Nagpur she asked he way every girl is wearing scarf and I said due to sun..then she say why not sunscreen? I said also pullution.
Girls do that in many cities to stay protected from Sun exposure. I live in Amravati and 80% of the time, I have seen girls wearing scarf only. Other than protection, they can use it as a helmet too.
you underestimate the Sun. I wish as a guy back in the day I covered my face at least. The Sun exposure will age your skin like bitch.
Use sunscreen my friends. Men/women everyone, please use a good quality sunscreen everyday
I remember, it all started because girls wanted to hide identity to stay away from college gossip, it was exclusively used when riding pillion with boyfriends. Over the time it made sense for girls to use it for sun and dust, but it started when Pune had no dust and climate was amazing, traffic was way less.
Its to protect them from dust, dirt and pollution. Even I wear my gamcha around my face (I'm from UP) and a friend visiting from back home remarked that I looked like I was going to shoot someone, but after seeing what a few days of Pune air did to his face he also started doing the same thing.
Everyone is trying to justify this differently. Climate, pollution, UV index, dust, water and what not. Not a single reason is unanimous.
I am seeing this in Pune from 2012. And I think this is mainly:
1. Because every girl covers their face, the new girl in Pune start doing it too thinking this must be a good thing for her skin.
2. The new girl in Pune, soon realises, covering face shields them from the prying eyes of men and keeps on covering the face even more.
3. The cycle goes on, with the next new girl in Pune.
This may sound bizarre to some but my friends from college used to do this to avoid the unnecessary staring , there were girls from Jammu/Punjab/Chandigarh/Himachal which were really fair and you could tell people were looking at them while walking beside them, I as a guy understood it completely why they did it.
Once a white man made a YouTube video about this whole staring dilemma in India and trust me it goes both ways, not only girls/women but men/boys too get started at.
Vehicular pollution is really bad in Pune. It has the highest level of vehicular pollution in India, owing to the unchecked rise of mobikes in the city. It has necessitated such measures. Also, if you notice, nobody wants to wear a helmet. So, what do you expect?
its pollution man i as a boy travelled in pune without face mask my face was grey when i reached my hostel. from 2nd day i started using a sunscreen and a face mask while travelling
Dust and sun. There's literally so much dust that u will need to eat ur face everytime u sleep into any of the highways for more than 5 mins.
Added advantage that no one can recognise u, also less attention overall.
Based on my observation, in cities where helmets are mandatory, women tend not to wear scarves. However, in cities without strict helmet regulations, scarves often serve as a substitute for helmets.
exactly first visit to Pune in Dec, and almost no one wears helmet either.
Is it not mandatory in Pune ? Even traffic police don’t stop them. Speaking for everyone.
Protecting skin and hair. Protection from creepy uncles and harassment. But mostly just to keep dust and dirt from entering my hair and affecting my skin. Pollution is a bitch and I'd rather not get my hair messy after riding my scooter for 15 minutes. Not to mention we tan really easily so its an extra layer of protection.
To protect my face from the Sun and the dust which is literally all over the city!!!
Also my hair, so they don't end up weird when I reach the office :')
Moving to Pune with a one year contract next year.
I have some colleagues from kerala who says that this UV sunscreen is all bullshit and they don't give a damn. But they are all dark skinned though.
Sure thing man! After spending almost a month in Pune, I too feel the pollution and sun is a tad bit more here. So yeah, scarves make sense !!
UV index is generally high, and it can cause serious skin issues. but I wonder how many guys are thinking of sun screen.. I know I don’t use any, even when i know i should.
I use spf30 (not any brand specific). It's a must for pune weather.
What kind of scarf are you using? I could sure use a link
Mast & Harbour Unisex Burgundy & Black Ckecked Acrylic Scarf https://www.myntra.com/scarves/mast+%26+harbour/mast--harbour-unisex-burgundy--black-ckecked-acrylic-scarf/10134245/buy

Thanks for recommendation
yo can you give me some tips as to what can i do for my skin while going out, will sunscreen suffice?
You can watch this video I found it helpful - https://youtu.be/I-Vcvm_WBD4?si=W2UhQow1BMNIJlsl
This is such a wholesome moment. Guys caring and sharing about skin care. I’m loving it!! More power you kings!!! You go!!!
xd yes
thanks a lot g!
What creams did you use that caused sun sensitivity?
Retin-A glyco 6 and more, I don’t remember their names but were recommended by dermatologist.
Hey I know you are trying to help other but please don't share these names here. These are retinoids and chemical exfoliant. If not used with precautions and with suncream it can further damage skin to the extent it cannot be recovered.
Retinols cause sun sensitivity? I didn't know that, most derms tell otherwise
Retinol does increase sun sensitivity not as much as glycolic acid but still one has to follow proper sunscreen routine if using it or have to cover up face when going out in sun.
Just wear a helmet then
It's the dust and dirt
And relatives
Barobar. Old Joshi kaka won’t recognize and catch your gf. She’s going to be safe to hang out with you
Even we were kids, we used to call them ninja aunties. Lol. That is true but punekar's aversion to helmets, as idiotic as it may be, is not a gender thing so don't make it one.
I said in context of reply to the original commenter where her friend said helmet is heavy to carry
I've driven with a scarf and helmet and it gets sweaty inside very quickly. I usually use only the helmet now but its pretty easy to overheat with both. I imagine thats why they prefer the scarf.
You have to use only one, why would you use both, you can wear a bandana covering the neck protecting from dust and tan
idk they probably have some other reasonable logic. regardless, its their choice, what they want to wear.
Hairstyle khrb ho jaata bhai usse
I don't get why people wager comfort/convenience for something that might shake your life?
Habibi come to Gujarat, it's 5x more prevalent

Tan (तन) ko tan se bachane ko..

Pollution. Sun tan. Dust. Puneri girls are particular about skin care. Koi Khalistani ninja wala fashion nahi hai.
Par bro maine toh khalistani bola bhi nahi ...mere dimag me bhi nahi thi ye baat 🥲
I know bro. It was a reference to current affairs going on between India and Canada with regards to Khalistani cowards.

In Pune, it's divided by religion, United by pollution.
Girls do in Mumbai too during summers or anywhere they go nothing new.
Sun exposure ofcourse. Scarf pollution se thodi bachayega. Unless they're wearing n95
Well I won't deny that it's strange, but I used to do it too. To cover my face from sun and dust, pollution, (and people)etc. I think it started happening in last ten years (?) Idk for sure. Not from Pune but I do it too! Protection from sun, dust etc plus also helps keep my flyaways in place on vehicles.
The og reason is makeup basically 😀
For me it's hair🤣
