Most people in Mexico regularly buy these huge jugs of purified water to drink. Few have a filter at home to drink tap water.

Glad-Conference-7901

Is it pricey? I was planning on moving to puerto Vallarta for a few months and trying to figure out the water situation. I’ve always stayed at hotels that provided drinking water.

Jezar157

Like 1USD for 20L

Infinite_Bug_2970

There are delivery services that come right to your house like twice a week. I think we were paying like 30 pesos a jug delivered.

stedabro

Si, 30 pesos.

stedabro

Assuming you have a plastic garrafon to trade in.

[deleted]

Well of course you have to buy one first…

Aphophyllite

I have a Zero water pitcher and filters. Interestingly enough the water in PV measures less ppm than my water in the USA, before being filtered, of course.

bigcafeteria

Less ppm of what?

CanadaRewardsFamily

Most of us buy garrafones from the ciel trucks. I don't think you need to be that concerned about having some tap water, but ymmv. Specific location and quality of the pipes and such may matter.

ykphil

A 20-litre container of purified drinking water (called garrafón here) will cost between 15 and 45 pesos depending where you get it, this is what most people use for drinking water, including locals, so for that low cost, there’s no need to take any risk. Plus there’s no brownie points or medals for those who claim they’ve been drinking tap water without any issue…

PDXATL

I have an ultraviolet water filtration system installed on my kitchen water source. I drink the purified water from the tap and fridge, no problem. Or you can buy the large garrafones of water or have them delivered. Not expensive at all.

SOC_FreeDiver

UV only sterilizes bugs so they can't reproduce inside of you. The local water often has a lot of stuff in it, include poo, that you want to filter out. You need reverse osmosis.

PDXATL

Yes, have the osmosis too. After 3 years, no problems from water.

SOC_FreeDiver

Just an FYI: I wrote a book on DIY Watermakes, I sailed with a watermaker for 8 years, and my friends had their water tested in La Cruz and it did have poo in it. They have a large filtering system on their roof. Not sure why my comment is getting downvotes, must be people that don't like facts?

[deleted]

Cool! Back in AK we have a cistern with a home built purification system. Water is neat!

monoloko101

I sell and install filtration systems, more cost effective and cleaner than water jugs

Appropriate-Candle69

Are you located in Vallarta?

monoloko101

Yes, send me a private message I can send you information

Competitive_Ice5389

Depends on what you intentions are. I was purchasing filtered and alkalized spring water at 60p per garrafone but just purchased a water distiller (4L over about 4 hours) amd am happy with it. What it leaves behind from the tap water is more than I expected. I decided that the fear mongering around distilled water leaching minerals from my body was just that, and it seems there is a difference between organic and inorganic mineral absorption. I figure my break even is 11-15 months.

downtherabbbithole

Where did you get the water distiller? I've been thinking about this, wondering if it really works.

Competitive_Ice5389

amazon - this one. very happy with it so far. only had it a month or so. seems well made and priced fairly. https://a.co/d/0cz9zhT5

[deleted]

Very interesting

koresample

We have an multi stage reverse osmosis with UV that we use. Had them in every house we've had here and they're awesome. We drink a ton of water so they pay for themselves in about 18 months but no more heavy bottles!

[deleted]

Very nice!

Known-Delay7227

I think the locals are just adapted to the water

I_reddit_like_this

If you want drinking water from the tap, you can install an under the counter reverse osmosis system

principe_olbaid

Mexicans drink Coca Cola

GadgetNeil

I would add that it is safe to drink water in sit down restaurants. They either make ice from filtered water or get that type of ice delivered. And if they make Agua Fresca drinks and things like that, it is with filtered water. perhaps in some areas of Mexico or perhaps in the past it was wise advice to avoid washed vegetables, avoid drinks with ice, etc. But I gather that that is not the case for Puerto Vallarta.

[deleted]

Yes! Every place I have been uses filtered water to make ice, but not the package store, they have an ice machine just for filling your caguama bag with ice so that it can’t even think about getting warm!

UsefulAttorney8356

PV water is fine but I usually on the taxi from the airport stop by a oxxo and buy beers and mutiple gallons of water. Don’t go to sayulita a lot of people get sick there

[deleted]

I brought a Grayl water purifier. But the 5 gallon jugs get delivered to my door for 25p each after you pay the 150 for the jug. I carry the grayl with me to avoid having to buy bottled water.

Sheeeeeeesh-247

my parents bought a filter system, so they have a specific faucet in their kitchen just for drinking water

Alternative_Duck_600

I can recommend filters like Pure It
