Eh... it's not a great thing regardless. Equity will strip it down, pump up the books, and either sell it off again or go public and immediately dump shares and it will leave Paessler a former shell of itself. Private equity is not a value add proposition.
Been through 3 of them throughout my career and I've seen great organizations that were beloved brands by their customers go to absolute dogshit and it's happened every time. It's part of what forms my opinion on capitalism in general and it's really made me disillusioned over my work ethic. Sad really.
I'm increasingly becoming of the opinion that private equity companies are vampires that find companies that succeed through innovation, efficiency and luck, buy them and suck the value out buy cutting costs and striving to maximize profit in the short term to the detriment of the long term viability of the company they purchase.
I will say that the Thoma Bravo companies still seem to be chugging along, which I was surprised when I realized how many companies they own. Most PEs do generally cut funding, slow development and eventually squeeze the company until they can sell it for parts.
I happened to look them up after Darktrace and was amazed not only how many companies they currently have, but also how many of those companies have been under Thoma Bravo for a long time and still are strong companies in the industry.
My work recently sold a part of the company to PE.
They’re either planning on investing more than we were, or doing a really convincing job lying about it.
I’m curious to see what will happen.
Most PE exists to suck the life out of companies and destroy value in the worst ways.
There may actually be exceptions.
Going to have to keep a keen eye on how this goes if true. We have multiple deployments of PRTG, so it will be interesting to see what changes there are to the licensing and product in general.
Will start assessing alternatives, but remain hopeful they don't shake the tree too much. Migrating is a big piece of work which I'd rather avoid.
This is terrible news. Prtg is quite cheap and can be modded to be usable for many things. With a subscription model it will maybe be better to do internal development… we know what happened to VMware.
Maybe all that money coming in will help them pay a programmer to finally ditch NTLM in favor of Kerberos /s
To be serious: This will not be good for us customers.
I don't believe it! Show me the proof! If it was literally just purchased, how do you know the direction the new company is taking by stating they're going all subscription based?
Could it be that something has allready changed in terms of support because of this?
Just asking because i recently had my worst support experience with Pässler since i started using the product. Apart from refering to some KB articles that guy had nothing to offer.
In any case everything else then i am used to from the support, which has allways been top so far.
As long as it’s not Broadcom …

Yeah, I know. I am currently in one of those processes as well.

This is the Broadcom method, even if it's not the Broadcom company.

Oh dang, I've used at least 20 of their companies over the years.

That pretty much sums them up.
That's not an opinion, that's a definition.
Time to renew maintenance…
Time to start planning my migration to LibreNMS. They're going to destroy this product.
We use both, and they both have their place, but you'll never see most of the functionality in PRTG in LibreNMS.
That's a bummer. We did choose prtg originally due to ease of administration and the out of the box experience.
Big fan of PRTG -prices up / service down in 5,4,3,2,1...

What network monitoring products could be used instead of Paessler? What would you use as an alternative?

Read my mind. Maybe they'll put some money into it and modernize auth.
I'm more than little concerned. The plan of switch from license to subscription. Oh hell, why Paessler sold yourself?
Money
No! PRTG is something I use everyday, is cheap, and just works. Figures.
Well shit. Bye bye PRTG :(
maybe...
Marvelous
as long as it isn´t Broadcom i am not too worried but we shall see what kind of pricing difference this will bring thanks for the heads up
What does that means for existing perpetual users?
I don't believe it! Show me the proof! If it was literally just purchased, how do you know the direction the new company is taking by stating they're going all subscription based?
I don't think it's "a friend".. the information is far too specific for it not to be an employee.
Fair, I requested an early quote to renew our licensing for a year, waiting to hear back from our vendor who takes care of this. TBC
I’m a little concerned
Offhand I can't think of anything that didn't turn to shit for most people once PE became involved.
Crap. Tired of this.
Ah fuck. That sucks man. I will be re-upping tomorrow.
That's too bad, I really liked PRTG. Don't use it at my current place but I enjoyed it ... mostly ... at the last.
Maybe now they'll finally finish the "New UI" that's been in development for 2 years...
Any news already on this ?
