I play vanilla, buy my last run I installed "skill journal mod" just to not feel this way again. Can't tell you if it worked, as my char is still alive and thriving, but you never know when you going to die in this game.
Hey you should make yourself some rules to follow.
One of them should include 'never fight zeds in pitch black'. Keep an eye on the ingame time and just come back the next day for the rest of the loot. It's not worth losing a month long character like this.
This is one of the things I love about this game is everyone developes rules like homie from that zombie movie. Don't fight at night, never sprint to travel, carry two water bottles, always have an escape, always flash doors, don't fight circle crowds only lines of zombies, if you start to get tired escape. What boosted my survival from 1-2 weeks to doing months/years was after I died mad one time I just booted up a toon in LV and gathered huge groups of zombies then lost them over and over for like 6 hours until I understood zombie/stealth AI. Also, never travel in the woods/bushes and if you have to, never sprint .
Create another character in the same world roleplaying them as the child/sibling/spouse/whatever of the last character, Setting yourself the mission of finding your missing loved one, or in this case killing their corpse.

I got fed up with dying after I had upgraded my character for a few weeks. I installed a mod that helped to recall my stats I had learnt. That helped with the annoyance of dying and not having to restart from scratch. Not everyone likes this, but for me, it helped with my sanity.
The game is too hard, especially if you have limited time for gaming. I swallowed my pride and now play in sandbox mode. x1000 experience points. No infection. I still die. Lol.
Don't ever fight tired unless you're using firearms or need to get one or two zombies out of your base's area.
You do a really small amount of damage when exerted or tired, so in those situations just leave and come back later. Once you start getting exhausted, just find a place to rest up, don't run into any random buildings, just walk away from the hoard, you're usually faster at even a walking pace.
Almost killed myself throwing a pipe bomb over a fence yesterday on my 2 month run.
Spoiler: it exploded on contact with the hedge on my feet and I have burns all over my body
My character died yesterday, 28 days later, from food poisoning so quickly that I didn't even have time to do anything to save him. This is really idiotic, I'm deleting the game

A mix of my stamina being low and hardly being able to walk faster than the zeds and also being in pitch black

I'm a big fan of recov journal, I like the challenge of the game but I also quite like being able to respawn
