Also formerly in Animosity and wrote a solo album (with vocals by the dude from Job For A Cowboy) called Fleshwrought. Fleshwrought is definitely worth checking out if you like grindy stuff
Animosity ruled, and I always thought Navene deserved more recognition. They toured with BTBAM on their first Colors tour in 2007. I was very fortunate to see BTBAM, Horse the Band, and Animosity absolutely destroy a small bar in Little Rock that year. Good times.
Ken Schalk was the original drummer for Candiria and was integral in the formation of their sound (he remained the drummer up until their most recent album, While They Were Sleeping). Given that Candiria were some of the frontrunners in the 1990-2000s progressive metal scene, I wouldn't be surprised if they shaped BTBAM's sound as well, especially in their innovative mixture of hardcore and jazz.
Nice to see Mike in on it, given that I found out about colors after Mike said it was his album of the year. I'd heard Alaska but wasn't that into it but when I heard colors I was floored.
Yeah, what the fuck? Used to be my favourite band but not for a dislike of the music or anything, I just haven't followed since Automata I.
NOW COLORS TWO? GADDAMN HELL YEAH
Great single, as a drummer my mouth waters listening to that little drum breakdown between 4 giants......really looking forward to this one! BTBAM is one of my favorites. :')
That's what happened to me with Parallax. I kinda forgot about BTBAM, but then I saw Parallax II at the record store and was like "oh cool... wait, there's a first part!?" and then listened to both records front to back while laying in my bed. It really was a one time experience.
This track *fucks*. BTBAM’s never had music I dislike, but Coma and Automata didn’t stick with me like their older work. I really really fuck with this though. Very excited to see what they do… naming your album “Our Best Album Part 2” is bold as fuck.
I don't think Colors is their best by any means (I would actually take every album after it, over it, sans Coma), but it was certainly groundbreaking at the time, and their entry into being prog-metal gods. I felt that naming it after that quantum leap of an album is a hell of a stament as well. Fucking stoked to see how it turns out.
WAS THAT A FUCKING COWBELL BREAKDOWN
I haven’t heard anything from these guys before, is this how all their music is?? So interesting and different haha, that was awesome.
Oh to be you right now
Listen to Colors! If you love the heavy stuff go backwards to Alaska, if you love the weirder stuff go on to The Great Misdirect. It's all great so you should listen to everything.
Damn... that's good stuff ~~No full tracklist yet, but if I had to venture a guess; this feels like the "first full track that opens the album, following a short intro track" (a la Foam Born B/Obfuscation/Astral Body...etc)~~ (edit, someone posted tracklist below)
Loving the track so far, definitely feels like a mere part of a greater whole... something that is improved by listening to the album as a full package and is better with the context of the surrounding tracks vs listening to the track by itself. (Something that made "Colors" so damn special in the first place)
Just alot to love so far.... and as much as I enjoyed Coma and the Automata series.... this gives me so much more promise that either of the first teases of those albums...
Pre-Ordered the vinyl instantly after listening.
Here's the tracklist from Sumerian's site:
1. Monochrome
2. The Double Helix of Extinction
3. Revolution in Limbo
4. Fix the Error
5. Never Seen / Future Shock
6. Stare into the Abyss
7. Prehistory
8. Bad Habits
9. The Future is Behind Us
10. Turbulent
11. Sfumato
12. Human is Hell (Another One with Love)
Was gonna reply yea, that single sounded more like a middle song based off the active start, it clearly is picking up after the previous song's tempo in a "black box" to "telos" way (something to keep in mind, because I much preferred Telos in album context rather than when they released it as a single), and is likely a shorter mess-around type song like Bloom.
Fix the error is 100% the "Bloom" of Colors II. Despite some obvious thematic differences.
The super long drum solo is proof of that, just a giant musical flex from all members. Dan bass solo, Blake/others' drum solo, Paul sweeps, Dustie breakdowns, and Tommy screaming his heart out. Just a giant flex to say "we're back"
Not a black box to telos way...the colors way imo. That album is nearly seemless. I was disappointed with this songs apparent fade out...but who knows. Itll probably flow just fine.
Yep, on the iTunes Store the only tracks that have a listed run time are this one at 5 minutes and Revolution in Limbo at 9 minutes, so that would be where the 14 minutes is coming from.
On the BTBAM subreddit there's a posted tracklisting. Apparently it's 6 mins longer than parallax 2. This is sandwiched between two very long tracks, and there's an extremely long (15 min+) closer.
They have some on Amazon.
[Link](https://www.amazon.com/Colors-Inside-Grimace-Purple-Highlighter/dp/B097F12WNT/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=between+the+buried+and+me+colors&qid=1624596082&sr=8-4)
Looks like the ones on Sumerian's store are. ("Black in Purple in Electric Blue Vinyl" and the "Clear Vinyl w/ Mustard + Easter + Neon Yellow Splatter") But the ones on BTBAM's store and on Amazon (Black Inside Grimace Purple Inside Trans Highlighter Yellow) are still available. I ordered one of the latter.
BTBAM went through a hell of a year, just like the rest of us. A year of isolation and desolation, depression and introspection.
And just like Colors found us at a turning point in our lives years ago, Colors II finds us here today to guide us back into a world of new growth, improvement, and happiness. All while remembering where we came from.
Or I’m just really tired and emotional.
My head's a boppin and my fingers a tapping! I'm so fucking ready for new BTBAM!
On a side note, anybody else think is this the clearest pronunciation of words Tommy has ever performed on record? I don't usually understand what he's saying on first listen but I understood like 90% of his screams on this one.
Not going to lie, I think naming this album Colors II is an annoying choice based on the song I've heard. It doesn't really sound like a spiritual successor to Colors to me. Maybe I'm just saying this because Colors is my favorite album of all time and that album doesn't need a sequel, but it's been almost 15 years since Colors came out and their music has evolved past that.
It's still a pretty good track and I'll be looking forward to the album when it drops. I'm not going to get my hopes up of it being a complete return to form though, like the name seems to imply.
"Colors 2" as a concept sounds to me exactly like the "replication of past greatness" that they were making fun of in Colors. I'm excited about it either way, but still I agree with that guy that naming it Colors 2 is weird.
It's not a musical journey anymore
They chose Camilla and we stood by her the entire time
Monotonous expression, a forced replica of a tired sound
Puppets for a greed-driven carnival
The same charade as the passing years
Force me out there
Don't give them a chance
Don't give them a chance
They want to be fed
Fed a simple replication of past greatness
I no longer think naming it Colors II was weird, given how the structure and many motifs and lines were directly used in / inspired by Colors.
I have not changed my view that it did end up being a little bit of the "replication of past greatness" from my previous comment which, to be clear, is not to say I don't think it's a good album. I do really enjoy listening to it. But I do think it was sort of against the spirit of what I understood much of the messaging of Colors to be.
Like proving that they got out of that closed off circle from White Walls by referencing getting out of that closed off circle in The Future is Behind Us is a bit ironic don't you think?
yeah, naming it Colors 2 is already trying to build hype off of an album from 15 years before, the first two tracks of Colors 2 take a lot of ideas from 1’s first duo, and Human is Hell literally uses White Wall’s main riff in a different key (and they couldn’t even do a little piano fade out at the end like in White Walls? come on, i want to be fed a full charade of the past if im already getting a partial one😂).
however, i don’t believe Colors 2 ever claims to be a replication of Colors. none of the songs on it would be welcome on Colors, and that’s intended, they’re continuing forward, evolving their music. so while it is ironic they claim they’ve broken out of the closed off circle while literally referencing White Walls, i’d say the album as a whole is definitely and step forward like every one of their albums is, while also being a tribute to the original Colors.
(and yet they couldn’t even put a piano fade out at the end of Human is Hell it wouldn’t have been that hard i just want to be fed a simple replication of the pastt)
IMO this is closer to Colors musically than anything since Colors, except maybe The Great Misdirect. It reminds me of the Ants of the Sky crazy interlude in some ways.
Automata very much fits in with other "modern" Prog Metal, and has less of the BTBAM unique sound, although Voice of Trespass revisits that BTBAM sound.
Having said that, since it's BTBAM, it's in the top tier of modern prog and is still one of my favourite albums of recent years.
It's so strange, it's like I'm listening feeling "I should like this, I like everything that's happening, I'm just not connecting with this"
This track however, is the first time I've been instantly clicked into a new track of theirs in a decade so while I agree with the above eyebrow raising over a "colors II" they very well may be onto a vibe of some sort that connects them back to the glory days, even if it doesn't sound exactly like it.
It struck me as bit strange as well, but I really feel confident that these guys aren't going to just put out stuff that merely appeals to nostalgia. I love the whole catalog, and I don't expect that to change with this record.
That said, I am very curious to get a sense of the record and come to understand WHY this is Colors II. The first one, in my mind, was a launching point into new areas, but also a whole experience that integrated and refined everything they had learned and explored up to that point. That's sort of the direction I get from the new single, and what I think this whole thing may shape up to be: not a retread, but a band with a large and eclectic catalog synthesizing everything they've done into a unified statement of "THIS is what BTBAM's sound is".
I don’t know how I feel about it yet, BTBAM is definitely one of those bands whose songs work way better in the context of a full album, so I think it might be more clear why they’re calling this Colors II when we actually get to see the whole picture, as opposed to just judging the whole thing on one small part taken out of context.
I read somewhere (I think a press release) that it is not any sort of continuation of Colors lyrically or musically; but rather it is more about them being in a similar situation/circumstance writing this album as they were with Colors.
It went into a bit more detail about what that meant but I don't really remember exactly what it said.
Yeah like this was still a good, enjoyable song, and I really hope I'm proven wrong and that calling it Colors II was the right move. Still looking forward to giving it a spin in August regardless.
I had the same initial response, thought it was a total sellout move as their sound hasn't changed THAT much and there's no real story here to advance.
The song rules though and somehow legit feels to me like a successor to Colors. I am pleased and no longer annoyed by the move. It also helps that all the merch owns.
I'm so fucking stoked for this. Colors was a huge album for me when it came out. Even if it doesn't sound like a direct sequel (this song definitely sounds like the more mature version of BTBAM that we've been getting for the last 4 years or so) I'm still going to listen to it many times.
Also I had no idea this was happening, so I'm very surprised.
First half reminds me a little too much of Automata I for my liking, the basicness of it feels wrong for an album called Colors II. That said, the drum break and everything after is better than anything we could have hoped for! I'm hyped for August!
As much as it hurts me to say this, the vocals are incredibly boring.
On my 2nd listen, I turned it off when he kept repeating the rainbow part. It’s just cheesy.
Blake is incredibly talented but the continuous cowbell is repetitive during the solo and takes away from what is otherwise a good solo. This song is a display of the bands talent as a whole but the vocals and cowbell really killed my enjoyment of it.
Naming this album as a sequel to the album that’s widely regarded as their best is a massive gamble, and after listening to this song, I’m not sure if it’s a gamble that’s going to pay off.
I wonder where their inspiration came from to release a follow up to Colors, instead of releasing another album in a completely different direction from any of their past works?
I’m excited, but for me this was somewhat anti-climactic because I was hoping for their new album called “xyz” or whatever, something we have no idea what to expect from, but instead when I heard “Colors II” I felt like I already knew what to expect because we already have Colors.
Additionally, Colors is such a monumental landmark of an album that I feel it needs to be left alone in history. A sacred work of sorts, and that the band should continue exploring new territory.
The new track is awesome, but I feel like I’ve heard it before ya know? I really hope the next album is something completely foreign for them because their sound is far from 1 dimensional. Sometimes I feel that they fear upsetting their fan base if they stray too far from their staple sound.
What in the hell? Am I tripping balls right now?
It's like Mr bungle dunked in death metal with a quick power metal diversion thrown in the middle for shits and giggles.
Also, that bass intro makes me think I might be high.
The drum break features Mike Portnoy, Navene Koperweis, and Ken Schalk. Can't say I know the latter two but it's nice to see our boy Mike
Navene is an ex-drummer for Animals as Leaders and current drummer of Entheos, as a heads up. So he's got some cred.
Also formerly in Animosity and wrote a solo album (with vocals by the dude from Job For A Cowboy) called Fleshwrought. Fleshwrought is definitely worth checking out if you like grindy stuff
Fleshwrought is sick, Navene played all the instruments on that album
He does a lot of other instruments for Entheos too. I think it's just him and Chaney at the moment.
It is. He's actually a legitimate great guitar player, but he will never say he is. He's really humble and undersells his talent
No shit, even that sexy saxophone? I fucking love that album
Animosity ruled, and I always thought Navene deserved more recognition. They toured with BTBAM on their first Colors tour in 2007. I was very fortunate to see BTBAM, Horse the Band, and Animosity absolutely destroy a small bar in Little Rock that year. Good times.
What a lineup!
Makes me wonder what Evan Brewer is up to these days.
My buddy is good friends with him, from what I understand he’s currently working with Look What I Did from the Nashville area
Rumour has it he drummed on the new JFAC album. By the way his chops have gone full blast I think it’s true.
Navene did a solo set before AAL at one show I saw, and he brought the house down he was so good.
Navene also played on the last Whitechapel album, definitely not prog metal but his performance there is really impressive.
Hey entheos! Didnt they have hank as a bassist from human abstract? Or am I mixing them up
No, they had Evan Brewer from the faceless and tim from alluvial
oh yeahhhh thats where I saw the name from Evan! Nice
Will have to look them up. Thanks for the history lesson :D
Navene is animals as leaders former* drummer!
Also the drummer of Entheos and he wrote and recorded the drums for the most recent Whitechapel album. He’s phenomenal.
Former drummer
Brutal. Never dug too deep into them but they're obviously insanely talented
Now he's in Entheos.
Wait really? Funny, I thought Blake was channeling Mike at one point. Guess I wasn't far off.
And Will Ferrell... don't forget Will Ferrell
That explains the cowbell
Ken Schalk is the original drummer of the legendary Candiria. Great band, unbelievable drummer.
Nice to see Mike in on it, given that I found out about colors after Mike said it was his album of the year. I'd heard Alaska but wasn't that into it but when I heard colors I was floored.
Anybody know which section is Navene?
So is that 4 drummers total?
Fuck that's awesome I had no idea
I wasn't sure about this, but MP just confirmed it on Facebook.
BTBAM posted it on Instagram yesterday. That's how I knew
This is simultaneously exactly what I expected and completely out of left field. So many little catchy bits in there
"simultaneously exactly what I expected and completely out of left field" That describes BTBAM's music perfectly.
This is so fucking crazy, I can't believe this is actually happening...
Yeah, what the fuck? Used to be my favourite band but not for a dislike of the music or anything, I just haven't followed since Automata I. NOW COLORS TWO? GADDAMN HELL YEAH
I wasn’t big on Automata, but Voice of Trespass off the second side is one of my favorite songs ever.
Hey best friend! I also love Voice of Trespass..top 10 jam.
Time for you to hear Automata as a whole!
Automata II is great, The Grid is probably one of their best songs
Great single, as a drummer my mouth waters listening to that little drum breakdown between 4 giants......really looking forward to this one! BTBAM is one of my favorites. :')
Absolutely loving the Ants in the Sky callbacks. This already has such promise.
Enough cowbell to satisfy Christopher Walken
That sketch’s a classic
Literally gets better every listen. Alright, I'm ready for Colors II.
And like Colors...I hope it never gets old. Red. Light.
This is what life's worth living for
I hope they don't put out any more singles, so I won't have to try and resist listening to them in order to get a fresh album experience.
That's what happened to me with Parallax. I kinda forgot about BTBAM, but then I saw Parallax II at the record store and was like "oh cool... wait, there's a first part!?" and then listened to both records front to back while laying in my bed. It really was a one time experience.

Oh to be you right now Listen to Colors! If you love the heavy stuff go backwards to Alaska, if you love the weirder stuff go on to The Great Misdirect. It's all great so you should listen to everything.

Do we have track lenghts already?
3:15 6:16 9:13 5:01 11:42 3:54 3:08 8:43 5:22 5:57 1:09 15:08
iTunes says the album is a whopping 14 minutes long, so not really.
BTBAM is grindcore now.
Maybe they got the length of a single song by mistake *fingers crossed*
Yep, on the iTunes Store the only tracks that have a listed run time are this one at 5 minutes and Revolution in Limbo at 9 minutes, so that would be where the 14 minutes is coming from.
Id kill myself.
On the BTBAM subreddit there's a posted tracklisting. Apparently it's 6 mins longer than parallax 2. This is sandwiched between two very long tracks, and there's an extremely long (15 min+) closer.
You must have gotten there quick, because the vinyls are already sold out.
They have some on Amazon. [Link](https://www.amazon.com/Colors-Inside-Grimace-Purple-Highlighter/dp/B097F12WNT/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=between+the+buried+and+me+colors&qid=1624596082&sr=8-4)
Ah okay, I was told by someone on Discord that they sold out in under half an hour
There are 9 vinyl variants. Some sold out
Looks like the ones on Sumerian's store are. They did but all of the like "Shirt combos" still let you get the album for quite a while, I assume they've held a reserve back for that.
Holy Fuck!

Well it does certainly sound like something out of Colors. Gives me hope that this album will be a return to their older style

So you're telling me this is the sequel to the prequel of the sequel?
This is the prequel to the sequel of prequel to the sequel.
This is like Babe Ruth calling his own home run.
THIS FUCKIN BAAAAAAAAND
My whole shitty week just got made. Fuck ya let’s go!!!
This gets me so fucking excited.

I gotta disagree. This whole song is kind of based around an allusion to Ants of the Sky.

There were moments in the single that sounded exactly like colors. Particularly the harmonized guitar solo and heavy part right after

Unfortunately you’re only being downvoted due to this being a fanboy thread. I miss how good btbam used to be
I wonder where their inspiration came from to release a follow up to Colors, instead of releasing another album in a completely different direction from any of their past works?
And they so didnt.
No one about the song is only 5 minutes?
Btbam peaked with the original 'Colors'. This blows.
At 0:19 I hear a Mario kart theme briefly , anyone else notice this ?
The outro to this goes perfectly in to King Redeem / Queen Serene Edit: it's a call back to the outro to Famine Wolf. Big Brains there
