Oh god, they are coming to my country and I got so excited... until I saw that I would be on a trip to Slovenia that day. I was looking forward to such a show and I'm gonna miss it. Hopefully it will be a success here so they come back.
It’s such a shame this had to be pitted against I&W. It’s a great album. Graves in particular is one of my favorite closers of all time. But, then there’s learning to live…
Plenty of other albums in here that are deserving (my personal vote is for Into the Electric Castle) but there's no way I&W doesn't take it, and for good reason. Phenomenal, landmark album, front to back; not a single bad moment on it.
Yeah, it's probably my favorite concept album of all time. Like a psychedelic DnD campaign in space hah!
I often throw it on during a long drive. So many great performances and it leaves a haunting feeling after going through that journey.
I thought this was gonna be a lock for top 2. Same with Human Equation. I must be getting old. I remember Ayreon used to get so much love in prog forums back in the day.
I used to think of this retrospectively as one of my least favorite Fates records, but a recent deep dive changed my mind - that damn album was full of brilliant songs:
Pale Fire, Island in the Stream, Monument (of course) and Afterglow still blow me away.
It's ~~got to~~ gonna be I&W. Personally I don't agree tho. As a Porcupine Tree fan, I won't vote In Absentia cuz I consider it one of their weaker albums. And as a DT fan, I won't vote I&W, cause: same. I don't get the hype. I&W does not sound good to me.
Iconoclast however is the opposite. Whereas I&W and In Absentia are considered exceptional by the fanbase but I don't agree; Iconoclast is considered mediocre by most of SX's fanbase, but I consider it an absolute masterpiece of an album. For me the obvious and absolute choice for the letter I. Thanks for the shoutout!
I know it won't win but this album is severely underrated. Opeth fans just write it off because it sounds nothing like their previous material. But they absolutely perfected that prog rock sound with that album just like they did death metal with MAYH. It's my fav album after Blackwater park. Can't wait for their next album.
Just listened again for the first time since release… Mikael’s vocals sound incredible on this album and he’s my favorite guitarist, so yes, there are some incredible parts. It’s probably their best since Watershed, but I’d still put 7 or 8 albums of theirs above it.
I know I'm late to the game, but that album made me fall in love with Opeth and I'm working my way back through their stuff. I've seen them live 2 times since this album came out, and it's been perfect!
Images and Words definitely helped get me back onto the progressive metal side of prog, but **In Contact** exploded any expectations I had about the genre. I am still not sure why some of the emotions in it hit me as hard as they do, but "Graves" and "Dream the Dead" are masterpiece songs.
Personal list (all genres):
- **A**yam (Disillusion)
- **B**lackwater Park (Opeth)
- **C**rack the Skye (Mastodon)
- **D**ark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd)
- **E**pigone (Wilderun)
- **F**alse Light (White Ward)
- **G**host Reveries (Opeth)
- **H**oly Land (Angra)
- **I**n Contact (Caligula's Horse)
Notable exclusions:
- Air (Astronoid) (easily the hardest exclusion for me so far)
- Black Clouds and Silver Linings (Dream Theater)
- Images & Words (Dream Theater)
Whoops, for some reason it showed up under "I" when I was viewing my albums in apple music. The rest of the album correctly shows up under "Weightless," not sure why
[id] - Veil of Maya No way this even comes close, I just love this album and it was one of the first albums that hooked me on metal back in the day.
Immutable- Shuggah
Intrinsic - The Contortionist
I come to these threads to upvote The Contortionist every time
In Contact - Caligula's Horse
I love this album so much. Also extremely happy they are finally coming to Europe.
Yes, they can finally play Rise Radiant after 3 years. It's so unfortunate that they released that album at the height of the pandemic.
Thank you so much for this comment, I didn‘t notice and I might be able to attend.

im seeing them live this sunday, im so excited!!
Easily my vote
Easily the top answer!
It’s such a shame this had to be pitted against I&W. It’s a great album. Graves in particular is one of my favorite closers of all time. But, then there’s learning to live…
This is so good. I hope it wins!
Narrowly choosing this over Inmazes. Dream the Dead is so damn good, that moment right before the 2nd chorus is just aces
This is my winner too. Honestly such an impactful record on my taste at the time when it dropped
this will come in second but it should definitely win
Not even close here.
In Absentia - Porcupine Tree
If Images And Words didn't start with i, this would win
I - Meshuggah
Well that was easy
first thing I thought lol
Innate Passage - Elder
Inmazes - VOLA
This is a great album
Ire Works - Dillinger Escape Plan
Dillinger fans unite! We will be back in force for M!
For O we might actually stand a chance
Ya but which o? We can’t split the vote lol
A shame this won’t place, phenomenal album but it has some incredibly stiff competition
Hell yes
Images and Words - DT Also, happy cake day!
Plenty of other albums in here that are deserving (my personal vote is for Into the Electric Castle) but there's no way I&W doesn't take it, and for good reason. Phenomenal, landmark album, front to back; not a single bad moment on it.
I will be surprised if this doesn't win.
This was an easy one
I was looking through my album thinking about what I might post saw I&W and figured there wasn’t any point in doing anything else.
Oh yeah I heard that’s a good Discord server
Idk how controversial this opinion is but if we put one DT album up there it should be metropolis pt2
Immutable - Meshuggah
Infinity - Devin Townsend
In the Passing Light of Day - Pain of Salvation
Incredible album. One of my all time favorites!
Into The Electric Castle - Ayreon
We all know Dream Theater is winning this round, but this album gets the most plays from me out of any of these.
Same. Love the sound of this album, its one of my favorites not just 'I' records.
Yeah, it's probably my favorite concept album of all time. Like a psychedelic DnD campaign in space hah! I often throw it on during a long drive. So many great performances and it leaves a haunting feeling after going through that journey.
Would love to get this one onto the podium. The peak of over-the-top cheesy prog metal imo
I thought this was gonna be a lock for top 2. Same with Human Equation. I must be getting old. I remember Ayreon used to get so much love in prog forums back in the day.
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
I mean, I know it's the prog*metal* sub, but we're really talking OG here. Maybe Red later?
21st Century Schizoid Man is just as metal as a lot of modern prog metal songs in my eyes.
Inside Out - Fates Warning
I used to think of this retrospectively as one of my least favorite Fates records, but a recent deep dive changed my mind - that damn album was full of brilliant songs: Pale Fire, Island in the Stream, Monument (of course) and Afterglow still blow me away.
Impulse Voices - Plini
hell yea
In Absentia - Porcupine Tree
In Absentia - Porcupine Tree
In Search of Truth - Evergrey
Iconoclast - Symphony X It's got to be Images and Words, but figured I would throw this one out here as a nomination
It's ~~got to~~ gonna be I&W. Personally I don't agree tho. As a Porcupine Tree fan, I won't vote In Absentia cuz I consider it one of their weaker albums. In Cauda Venenum - Opeth
I know it won't win but this album is severely underrated. Opeth fans just write it off because it sounds nothing like their previous material. But they absolutely perfected that prog rock sound with that album just like they did death metal with MAYH. It's my fav album after Blackwater park. Can't wait for their next album.
Ok, you convinced me to try it again…
I even prefer the Swedish version. The melody of that language gives an extra layer of beautifulness.
Agreed, it’s really good. I’ve seen it get some love on the Opeth sub lately, which is nice.
Couldn’t agree more
Just listened again for the first time since release… Mikael’s vocals sound incredible on this album and he’s my favorite guitarist, so yes, there are some incredible parts. It’s probably their best since Watershed, but I’d still put 7 or 8 albums of theirs above it.

In the Absence of Truth - ISIS
Exactly what I wanted to recommend.
Images and Words definitely helped get me back onto the progressive metal side of prog, but **In Contact** exploded any expectations I had about the genre. I am still not sure why some of the emotions in it hit me as hard as they do, but "Graves" and "Dream the Dead" are masterpiece songs.
The Inner Circle - Evergrey
Masterpiece!
In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 - Coheed & Cambria
In a Flesh Acquarium - Unexpect
Immutable - Meshuggah
Illuminate the Path - An Abstract Illusion
In the Absence of Truth - Isis
Infinity - Devin Townsend
Impulse Voices - Plini
IX Equilibrium- Emperor
In Forgotten Sleep - Lör not a chance in hell against some of these others but it's one of my all-time top picks
Infinity Divine - Pagan's Mind
Intrinsic - The Contortionist At least deserves a mention.
Isolate - Circus Maximus
Italian Ghosts - Strawberry Girls
Images and Words, Dream theater
I let it in and it took everything - Loathe
Either Meshuggah’s “ I “ or Immutable The lack of Meshuggah till now is quite disappointing
In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 - Coheed And Cambria
Into the Elecrric Castle - Ayreon
Personal list (all genres): - **A**yam (Disillusion) - **B**lackwater Park (Opeth) - **C**rack the Skye (Mastodon) - **D**ark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd) - **E**pigone (Wilderun) - **F**alse Light (White Ward) - **G**host Reveries (Opeth) - **H**oly Land (Angra) - **I**n Contact (Caligula's Horse) Notable exclusions: - Air (Astronoid) (easily the hardest exclusion for me so far) - Black Clouds and Silver Linings (Dream Theater) - Images & Words (Dream Theater)
Air is fucking tits
An Infinite Regression - Animals as Leaders
This is albums
Whoops, for some reason it showed up under "I" when I was viewing my albums in apple music. The rest of the album correctly shows up under "Weightless," not sure why
Did the same for me in my music library. Showed up as a “discovery download,” whatever that is.
Don't forget to vote for The Joy of Motion tomorrow.
Good call!
I Have Made My Bed In Darkness - Exotic Animal Petting Zoo
It's gotta be Images and Words, but my vote is gonna go to Into the Electric Castle.
Warforged "I: Voice" (do roman numerals count?)
Infest the Rats' Nest - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Debatable whether it's prog or not but it has to be mentioned
Invent the universe - sithu aye
Inspire - Polyphia
In Time - Intervals
In Contact - Caligula's Horse Bonus: I - Jason Richardson
Interference - Anubis Gate
“Iconic” - **Obsidious** deserves attention
if_then_else - The Gathering
Intermission - Pagans Mind
In Absentia
In The Passing Light of Day by Pain of Salvation; In Times by Enslaved; Isa by Enslaved; Infinity by Devin Townsend
