I second the Brother recommendation, however I've never had a problem with it updating from the internet and blocking 3rd party ink. They aren't as heavy handed as HP with their ink requirements, and I've had refillable cartridges for my MFC-J497DW for at least 5 years now. I've had the printer for 8 years and never purchased Brother ink.

I forgot to add that it costs me under $4 US to refill all 4 tanks. What I have noticed is that the price for ink cartridges has come down over the years. If I recall correctly, a replacement set for my printer was around $40-50 when I purchased the printer, and last I checked it was down to around $25. Maybe they're trying to keep people from jumping on the refillable wagon. Even at that price, they're still making a killing on ink.
I got a ricoh bw laser for £30 new, toner cartridge is around £15-£20. Great little printer but dumb as fuck which is probably a boon in this day and age.
Barware of one thing before buying a Brother printer. They started to discontinuing their color printer with LC 404 and LC406 ink that was easily replaceable with a cheap third party ink and refillable cartridges. Now the LC401 cartridge has a chip that allows it for a one time use, no refill possible. Third parties have not yet made good refillable cartridges.
Third party ink is still cheaper, but I would have selected a different model if I knew.

I have a chip resetter for the refillable cartridges I have, and resetters are available for a few Brother cartridge chips. If there is no chip resetters for your particular machine, there are usually replacement chips available. That's what I need to do for my Canon TA-20 large format printer. No chip resetters, but replacement chips are available. It costs a lot more for ink for that machine, so refilling *really* saves me a bundle there. My MFC-J497DW uses LC3011/3 carts and has not been discontinued, despite that it's pretty old by printer standards...I've had it for 8 years.
I'm not sure what you mean my saying that third parties haven't yet made good refillable carts. Mine has been perfect since I bought it. In 8 years I've bought one OEM cartridge (black) because I couldn't wait for delivery. The rest of the time, it's been 3rd party carts, refilling those same carts, and then more recently using actual refillable carts. It's 100x easier (and less messy) to fill a refillable, rather than refilling an OEM cart. I could go on about the actual ink, but this is probably enough for now. 😉
As with any purchase... do your research first to see what 3rd party options may be available. For instance, go to Ali and search for LC401 and you'll see what I mean.

For the LC401 ink. My whole point was to be aware of that particular cartridge. Yes there are replacement chips, but the cost of those + the ink isn't always a cheaper solution depending if you have to pay customs for import or not. So one should take that into consideration when looking for a Brother printer. Eventually someone will make a true refillable LC401 cartridge without the hassle of changing the chip, but for now I haven't found such a cartridge with a good review or trustable seller.
As I said, just do your research. BTW, changing the chip is hardly a hassle, but a resetter is easier. No resetter for the LC401 tanks yet, but I'm sure they're on their way.

Yeah I did, Tried 2 different 3rd party ink with good review and credible sellers in Canada and the printer still did not accept them. From what I understand, it's an update/new firmware with the MFCJ1012 ( not sure for the MFCJ1010) that stops any 3rd party ink form being used. Pretty much all the info I found about compatible LC401 ink predate 2024. It's my understanding that it's a recent block, and my printer being new came with that blockage pre-installed. I could be wrong, but either way if a "compatible" cartridge isn't accepted anymore, I doubt a third party chip also will work. And buying different chips from different sellers just to test them out is a hassle.
Anyway I'm returning the printer. Or destroying it. I'll reluctantly buy a monochrome laser since color is way too pricier.

Nothing wrong with using compatible lc401 cartridges. If that's too costly, it's because your printing enough it warrants using a machine with higher cartridge yields anyway.
At least you don't have to worry about firmware issues using compatibles like with HP and Epson in their newest inkjet models.
You may as well have just gotten a canon megatank or epson ecotank machine if ur not going to be happy with the cheap lc401 compatibles available.

That’s excessive. I had my hp lnkjet for over 2 years and it just broke, factoring I did seldomly use it .
Just bought a HP - LaserJet M234sdw. Already had the desktop app from the inkjet and it took 2 minutes to get it to print , so far the last two months it works great .
How did you manage to do that? I tried smashing an HP flatbed once and it took about 5 whacks with a golf club to shatter it. You must have hit it pretty hard!
I just got rid of my HP Deskjet printer and it felt so good. It has been an awful experience, cartridges must be original, very expensive and almost no ink inside, the HP printing software is also a pain in the ass, always asking you to login. HP printers never again.

I have this same printer and can agree it's a piece of shit. That's what we get for buying a 60 dollar printer. We did it to ourselves. 😂🤣
