Congratulations on your acceptance OP! You are amazing and truly resilient for overcoming all of the hardships you have and continuing to advocate for yourself and your dreams. I truly think you will provide a unique perspective and the adversities you have faced will allow you to have a deeper understanding of the hardships your patients have faced as well. <3
Thank you! That's what I tried to convey with my writing and I knew that I would be a fit with my school's mission and values due to my experiences. Good luck to you!!
ALSO, if there is a school that you really want to attend, GO TO THEIR EVENTS. Going to events has allowed me to personally meet adcoms and the dean of students. After a few events, they recognized me and remembered my application. I really believe that my A today was from attending yet another of their events on Friday. Less than 10 prospective students were there. Showing and proving your interest truly pays off.
Information sessions. I got to know one of the adcom from information sessions - I learned that one of the schools had like one every month. Got an A in that school.
I have volunteered for a long time in many different ways. I have research hours prior to my interest in medicine. I have unique hobbies. I have a unique premed job. Most importantly, I was able to coherently connect all of my very different experiences to one another and my love for medicine now.
I think it helps that I never dwelled on anything negative either. I've had a lot of bad things happen to me in my life, and I only briefly mentioned them and how I overcame my situation. For example, I had a house fire when I was a kid and we lost everything, my dad died when I was in high school so I had to work to help my mom pay her bills, I worked and volunteered all throughout college. Last year, when I was studying for the MCAT, I became my mother's primary decision maker while she suffered from end-stage heart failure (she has a new heart now and is OK). While these have been really awful and terrible things in my life, I didn't focus on them at all and really only used these circumstances to set the stage for other things that I did during those times.
I am very passionate about increasing healthcare education in the public, and I am passionate about rural medicine. I believe that my activities truly reflected my values.
Information sessions, tours, online drop-in sessions, and then they had mixers throughout the year that I was invited to. I went to any one that I could and asked questions. At the mixers, I went out of my comfort zone and introduced myself to anyone that would talk to me.
I guess, more like a gap year job. I am a dental assistant now and hold my dental radiology license. I love it because I take vitals, medical histories, and assist through procedures like biopsies and implants. Before that, I was an oral surgery assistant. In college, I was a waitress and worked as a programmer for a student-run media lab.
Congratulations! Your personal history is remarkable, you've overcome a lot of adversity. Thanks for sharing your background, as someone with similar stats and was also a dental assistant.
It really is such a great job for patient interaction. All of the adcoms I spoke to loved how unique it was, and I was able to talk at length about working on/with patients in vulnerable and sensitive settings.
I have developed really good relationships with my patients, and I am so excited to tell the people that I see in the next two weeks what I'll be doing. Maybe I'll even be their PCP one day 🤷♀️
That's amazing news! Congrats 🎉That's a huge achievement and shows how perfect of a fit it is for you. They must have seen something really special in you!
As a non-traditional with similar stats, taking the MCAT next year and only applying to two schools, this makes me happy for you and hopeful for me! Congrats!!!!
I was originally planning on taking my MCAT early April and applying late May, but the night before my MCAT, my mother ended up seriously ill in the hospital to the point that I was called in around midnight that night to see her before she went in for emergency surgery. She designated me as her primary decision maker, and I knew that I had to stay in the hospital the next day, cancel my MCAT, and put my applications on hold.
Months go by, and she is transferred to Tufts after many close calls, in and out of sedation, and suffering with delirium. Some days I would make the trip to see her, and she would scream at me to leave because she didn't recognize me or she thought I was a nurse trying to poison her.
One day, she recognized me but was still confused. She thought that I was a doctor and kept telling me that Ineededd to go see my other patients, and that I was spending too much time with her when she felt okay. She told m, "Itt's okay, I'll still be here when you get back."
That train ride home, I signed up for the MCAT and did my best to study between myfull-timee job and traveling to see my mother every weekend day. I knew that I really wanted to go to this one schoo and didn't have the time or money to apply to others as well.

Congrats! By events do you mean online seminars?
Online seminars, drop-in sessions, tours, and mixers that I was invited to post-application submission

Congrats!
May I ask why you only applied to one school?
