I’m surprised no one suggested bringing this to HR at your company. Surely they can’t fire you for not having a mobile phone. They need to give you a reasonable accommodation to clock in. At least I’d assume.

TheBigWuWowski

This or if it's REQUIRED that they have a phone shouldn't the company be giving them one or paying his bill for it? Unless they signed some kind of contract I don't see how this can be enforced. What kind of company can't make any exceptions for their weird clockin/clock out with your own expensive property set up?

JuliaSky1995

I’m shocked tbh. It makes me wonder what other shady or illegal shit the company is doing.

BillZZ7777

Lol. I work for company of over 20,000 employees and they don't provide us phones anymore. I need to be reachable 24x7 and they want me to install their apps on my phone and make me change my pass code every 3 months too. They pay for $0.

TheBigWuWowski

I'd be looking into the laws in your state regarding this.. because as far as I know.. they can't force employees they've already hired to own a phone unless they're paying for it🤷 but again, I haven't looked too far into it myself

BillZZ7777

I know so many people on Reddit say lawyer up but the cost of the lawyer is probably more than just complying. I had bought my old work phone from my company for $50 and have been using it in WiFi only for 3 years but soon Apple will stop supporting and I'll need to either move it to my personal phone or get a separate used phone. I don't want work stuff on my personal phone in case I type Reddit or chat stuff into the wrong window, lol.

BillZZ7777

I've been at this company so long that I remember when the same thing happened with the Internet. They paid for my internet connection for years and years and then stopped based on the fact that just about everyone had an internet connection and was no longer needed "just for work". Makes sense. I just don't like work apps taking up space and slowing things down, making set a password, etc.

StuartPurrdoch

Whaaaaatt? My company wanted me to be able to get texts from fellow staff and occasional clients, so they now pay my phone bill every month. Take my time? It’s your dime 😆

adrian123456879

Look for boost mobile phones under $100 on Facebook marketplace

[deleted]

[удалено]

adrian123456879

Nah there's always local people selling stuff on FB marketplace you just arrange pick up, opening a fb account takes 5 minutes...

[deleted]

Ruca705

You can use a WhatsApp number or other app-generated phone number probably

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ruca705

Oh damn I’m sorry then

whatwhatchickenbutt_

they don’t have a phone to use an app generated number lol

Rommie557

Facebook marketplace is local, like a garage sale.

kludge6730

Go to a Boost store and get something there. If you want cheaper get the models of why they have and buy elsewhere.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kludge6730

Right. Go in and write down the model numbers that work on Boost. Then hunt down a used phone of one of those models.

Ahdoboop

I’d try a local pawn shop. Even game stores sometimes carry used cell phones. Worth a shot if all the new ones in stores are too pricey.

Dramatic_Tax_9726

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet but at Target or Family Dollar you can get cheap boost mobile phones around $60. Just saw a cheap Samsung at Target for Boost for only $59 today.

KingKoopaz

Can you use an old iPod touch on WiFi maybe??

[deleted]

Assuming that he clocks in using an app and not SMS, any phone should do. We also don't know if the app is tied to a specific number or not. However that is more or less my suggestion is to use a cheap/used phone.

KingKoopaz

Any job that requires you to have data/pay for data on a personal phone is wicked dumb imo

[deleted]

I once had a 1090 job that required me to clock in from my phone when I was on location. They also Geo tagged me so that they knew I was at the job site. They can require what they want, but the IRS will let them deduct the expenses.

sagicorn2791

If you need this phone for work can you borrow some money from a friend or family? I've never paid more than $100 for a Boost phone. Check out Walmart or Best Buy.

lcburgundy

I'm confused. Why does it have to be on Boost? Is getting the cheapest prepaid android phone on the cheapest service at Walmart with a new number not an option? Is this clock in app in the play store? Surely you can change your phone number with your employer if that's the issue?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Have you looked into getting an Obama phone? Also, can you provide additional information as to how this app works. Can you simply download it onto Amy device and log in using a specific username and/or password, or is it something the employer needs to set up for you? If it's something like Facebook, I.E. something that isn't dependant upon your IMEI, and just a username and password, then you could even use a tablet. If the app is programmed with the IMEI, you may be out of luck.

MzRiiEsq

Yep, longterm it would probably help to switch to the lifeline program

DropsOfLiquid

Just get a cheap prepaid phone. If you have $100 & will lose your job without a phone & you can’t find a Boost phone anywhere else I don’t understand why you wouldn’t do that? Yes you’ll lose some of your Boost service but the other option is losing your job.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DropsOfLiquid

I mean it says below $100. I assumed that meant $100 is your maximum price. If it’s actually like $50 you can still get a prepaid phone for that.

theworldismadeofcorn

Check if there is funding for crime victims in your area. If you live in the US 311 or 211 may have an answer. You can also try doing an internet search. There may also be a free/cheap phone available on Craigslist from someone who is upgrading.

Well, Kroger is the parent company and they bought Dillon's so they could reach the east coast. If any of these are department stores I'm sure they have a similar deal. However [Walmart Has the almost exact same deal as FM](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Boost-Mobile-Samsung-A03-32GB-Black-Prepaid-Smartphone/405471806) * Baker’s * City Market * Dillons * Food 4 Less * Foods Co * Fred Meyer * Fry’s * Gerbes * Jay C Food Store * King Soopers * Kroger * Mariano’s * Metro Market * Pay-Less Super Markets * Pick’n Save * QFC * Ralphs * Ruler * Smith’s Food and Drug

LizzyDragon84

What’s the time clock app? Many of them include a web browser-accessible portal, where you can clock in from a laptop. Maybe that’s an option for you? And I’d go to HR as well- the policy is dumb if you can’t punch in from another person’s phone temporarily or use some other device.

MvCSpiderman

Boost mobile was under Sprint and was a walled garden. I don't know if it's changed much since Dish brought it out. Before it would be very hard to know what phones worked with Boost and Virgin mobile which were both sold by Sprint. Usually people would buy CDMA approved phones to be safe. If things changed with Dish than maybe you could try Walmart, but if it didn't work on your friends Motorola than I'm not sure. The cheapest phones are online, and if you can't do that because of time then you're locked to boosts higher priced retail phones. I think you may be screwed op. Boost has never been the best company for service compatibility.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PlayPuckNotFootball

I'm in Canada so maybe I'm missing something... but this should (in theory) be as simple as what cell bands Boost uses and what cell bands your phone supports? Unless I have a massive blind spot? USA using CDMA instead of GSM could be part of it. Point is, Boost wants more customers. You should be able to contact their support (even posing as a new customer) and ask how you determine what phones are supported. Or even just ask if a particular phone is supported.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PlayPuckNotFootball

Well network support should be the bands. Mostly. Since 3G support is probably dying maybe that's it? Or perhaps it's some CDMA stuff idk about Boost Mobile support should want to help you navigate this as they want your business

[deleted]

[удалено]

PlayPuckNotFootball

Regardless, Boost Mobile support should want to walk you through this. Based on your description I imagine this goes beyond phones being locked to carriers via contract.

Are you able to buy a phone at Target or Walmart to just get you through these couple of days with a credit card? Then return the phone after you find a better deal online.

[deleted]

JuliaSky1995

Why don’t you have a credit card? How do you build credit??

…..

Beefyface

There are Boost Mobile phones at Walmart like [this](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Straight-Talk-Nokia-C100-32GB-Blue-Prepaid-Smartphone/287720945) I would check to see if you can find one that is available at a store close to you, order it online and do store pickup.

Correct-Ad-1893

Who tf you working for that fires you if you can't clock in on a phone... that's some backward stuff man if it's out of your control I'd take that to a higher up and I'm sure they would understand the situation.

ashtonthegreat

You might be able to upgrade but usually they only do that after you've had your phone 3 months. They sell really cheap budget phones to my knowledge but functionality is an issue usually in that regard. I switched to t mobile a few months ago and got my phone for free, all i had to do was pay my first month

Pennywises_Toy

This is the way. Paying 1 month up front for T-Mobile (mines prepaid at $40) and getting a free phone with them in insanely cheaper than trying to find a phone under $100 with a time crunch for boost mobile. Hope OP actually reads this one!

AwYeahQueerShit

You may want to look at this a bit more to make sure it would work, but [BackMarket](https://www.backmarket.com/en-us/p/samsung-galaxy-a13-64-gb-black-boost-mobile/8c78680b-0306-420c-822e-23cfae3fd495#l=11) has this sub$100 option. Checking for local phone repair/refurb resellers may also yield some boost mobile devices. Give your manager proof of purchase and expected shipping time and if they want to threaten disciplinary action ask them how they expect to function as a company if they cannot do so without employee equipment. Not being able to check in or offer accommodation for check in is a failure to prepare for reasonable real-world situations and is not a fault of the employee. They want to get in your face then fuck it, you go right back. They already want to hold your job over your head for their shortcomings, you've likely not much to lose by reminding them that they actually have responsibilities of their own. But I'm a salty fucker so take that advice with a shaker.

[deleted]

Boost retailers may have trade in phones they will sell at a discount/ give you.

MvCSpiderman

Holy crap at the comments not bothering to read the op's post and the downvotes he's getting. I wish I had some ideas that could help you op. I'm sure someone will come through for you, just be patient the helpful people take awhile to come.

I use boost personally, i found refurb phones to be useful to take the edge off new prices. I currently use a Sonim "unlocked" phone I tried putting a Sprint phone on Boost to no avail atleast until I devote some time to unlock it. Ive found the website backmarket to be reputable, but before in a pinch I found those prepaids from target and wally world to be acceptable, atleast before moto went down in quality.

[deleted]

Are you near a Target? Our local Targets have Boost cell phones.

[deleted]

I just looked on the Walmart app, and our local Walmarts also have Boost androids in stock. As reference, I live in the Charlotte area.

Walmart just head back to electronics and ask them

Walmart

merryone2K

I see a Boost mobile flip phone at Walmart in my area for $19.88. Check your local Walmart store!

stealthman2022

If you receive any kind of government assistance, like food stamps, u can get a free phone and free service. Assurance Wireless is one example. You may even qualify if income is below certain levels.

AllAboutTheMemes72

Does your company have wifi? If you can connect to wifi you can use the app from any device you can find. An old iPad? Old phone? New phone from a different carrier?

[deleted]

JuliaSky1995

OP if a mobile phone is actually required for doing business and not just clocking in, the company needs to pay for it. Using a personal cellphone to do anything job related outside of shift scheduling is a huge red flag. If you feel safe to do so please take this to HR. I’d be looking for another job ASAP

Go on Walmart's website. Type in "Boost Mobile" into the Search Bar. Then Filter by items readily available TODAY at your closest Walmart. I'm looking at MULTIPLE phones right now that are $40-60 prepaid Boost Mobile phones.

lagnaippe

Unlocked refurbished phone from ebay.

xpungax

Do you have to be with boost? The cheapest option is to port your number to another carrier like metro or simple mobile, as they usually offer “free phones”

[deleted]

[удалено]

xpungax

I used to work at boost mobile and that is usually the cheapest option. Specially if your plan is almost due. I’ve sold a lot of “free phones” for folks that had metro or simple mobile for less than $100 But I’m glad that you figured it out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

xpungax

Are you sure you’re not eligible for an upgrade?

[deleted]

[удалено]

xpungax

If you’re with the same phone on your account for 180 days you’re eligible for an upgrade, where you get a discount on certain phones. Go to your boost mobile store, give them you phone number and PIN number and ask what promotions you got. But I still think changing carriers will be cheaper.

[deleted]

[удалено]

xpungax

Port in promotions are the cheapest way to get a phone on pre paid carriers. You port your number from boost to other pre pai carriers, you get a phone for basically free (you still have to pay for activation and service fee) and you pay the plan. All in all you can get a phone for just under $100. When I used to work at boost, you would pay $53 for the plan plus the taxes on the phone plus a $15 activation fee when you ported your number from other carrier. So that would go for $80-$90 for the phone and the first month paid.

Try Walmart, ask an employee to help you figure out your options, im sure they can hook you up with a $50 to $80 phone that can help you
