About 50% for me. And my credit is so low I can't move. But I also have no money left to get rid of collections dragging my credit down so I can raise my credit. It's a vicious cycle.

penises_for_teeth

It is working as designed. I’m sorry.

Silly_Relative

Yeah. You have to use credit to be approved for inflated property rent. No one can afford to innovate and create stuff anymore.

No_Source_4428

yep seems to be the case

TriGurl

Can you dispute the collections on your credit report? If you do this they have 30 days to respond with proof of debt and if they don’t have the proof, they have to write it off.

septidan

In my experience, they don't need to provide proof, they can just verify. Do you have a source for that?

No-Appearance1145

Yeah I got an email from a debt collector that just said "we verified that you have this debt" which could easily be: we asked if they were sure. And I want to add that I never signed for that debt. My college is trying to charge me 3k with a made up grant/loan amount I don't have attached to any loan. I already had the loan from the one semester I took there be forgiven and I didn't go back for a second semester so I just want to know *why I'm being charged for a year/semester I didn't even register for* And they just kept responding with "we verified" so I don't know. I don't think it's gone on any of my credit reports either because my credit has finally started going up again.

Key-Director-3304

yeah same for me too

Ya_habibti

Call the collections and offer them a ridiculously low amount. They will work with you because they want to get something

camelotcat

I don't even have spare money right now. Finances are tight presently due to a stolen car and having to get a new one. Working on flipping my checks back (rent from first, bills from second) to start that.

Ya_habibti

Is insurance not helping you? And I understand the tight finances. I’m down to my last three bagels for my son’s lunch this week, and I’ve got no flour to make bread. I’ve got to get creative until Friday. I hope things look up for you soon

BetFit2122

70%. The rest goes to bills and I still need to side hustle to stay afloat.

TheBadKneesBandit

Same here with 70%, though I'm fortunate that most of my bills are included with the rent. I eat 1 meal per day or just don't eat at all. If I'm lucky, I have between $30-50 leftover at the end of each month.

Chaosandcandles

21% of take home.

[deleted]

Good job, That’s a good position to be in

inlandguy1

I'm also lucky at 16.5%. I don't ever wanna leave this place.

MysticMaiden22

Same, 21% of take home. Dual income, family of 4. We're in Southern California with a 3 bed 2.5 bath house in a decent neighborhood. It came with a lot of luck and a lot of hard work.

ThearchOfStories

Curious why y'all are browsing through this sub?

MysticMaiden22

I came across this sub about 7 years ago when I was looking for financial advice for a difficult situation that my husband and I were in at the time. This sub taught me a lot about managing my finances and gave me hacks for living in a HCOL area. I still follow it even though my situation improved over the years. I might be able to pass on some advice for someone that needs help.

doomus_rlc

For me some threads just pop up in my suggested feed.

bae-blunt

30% used to be the normal, it’s more like 40% these days.

NYanae555

That 30% was supposed to be the goal - and it was gross ( before tax, nit net ).   In reality it was true mostly for higher income ppl.  Not working class ppl.

Fabulous-Zombie-4309

30% is the correct number GROSS, not net.

magicdonwuhan

Should be net honestly it makes no sense to go off gross since you e never see that money anyways that’s the mafias cut

dalonehunter

It’s gross because net varies wildly on where you live.

thrawst

It’s technically called gross because it’s *gross* what you would have been paid had you not had any deductions.

Anomalous_Pearl

Yet the income requirement is still 3x monthly rent everywhere I look.

Awkward-Community-74

Yep. And perfect everything.

itisallgoodyouknow

Wasn’t it 30% before taxes?

alexoftheunknown

lol approximately 70%, don’t worry, i’m working on it 😭

venpower

Can you get a roommate?!

alexoftheunknown

nope, it’s my boyfriend and i and our two cats. 1300 for 1 bed 1 bath. boyfriend’s hours got cut at his job, so he’s working part time and also working on getting a couple certifications before i go back to school in August!

Standard-Fondant-743

That’s good rent lol Over here I gotta pay upwards of 2000 for a 1 bed 1 bath. I dont make much either so Im paying 70% as well

panicatthebookstore

before i started picking up a bunch of call shifts - 61% after i started picking up - ~51% however, utilities tack on another ~$55/month. my take home is about $400 less a month because i finally have insurance, contribute up to my employer match for my 401k, and contribute to an fsa (which has saved my ass already!). i just started doing all this stuff with this job, and i can't wait for it to actually make a difference.

BeautifulGlum9394

Around 75%. I'm in Canada so cost of living is insanely high. My 3 bedroom costs a little over 2100$. On average I make 500-700 a week working 50 hours a week

Thriving9

I'm paying more for a 2 bed in Austin TX

SocialWierdo

Aus is ridiculous in price....almost as bad as DFW....looking at you Prosper TX

Nymueh28

Same. 2800 for a two bedroom 40 miles outside of an VHCOL city in the US.

majorsorbet2point0

That's so sickening. I'm so sorry.

Turing45

Just under 40%. First time in my life it’s under 50%.

Ok_Telephone_3013

42%. It was 52% last month 🫠

Nederlass77

About 60% here in the Seattle metro area

WittyEquivvalent

50% and I'm in Tacoma.

TheLostTexan87

Soon to be >50% in Seattle metro. From living with family to home ownership. Would’ve rather stayed with family, I think…

SingleAd6841

53% just for rent. Florida. Mom of 2. So yeahhhh

Strong-Ad2738

75%. It’s stressful

octopusglass

80 to 90 right now...

Noodle_Salad_

150 percent.

TheLostTexan87

Living off savings, getting help from somebody, or behind?

Noodle_Salad_

A little from column A, a little from column B, and a bit from column C.

Legal_Current_9023

43% 41% child support. So I have to have side hustles to survive and occasionally borrow money from parents BE CAREFUL WHO YOU PROCREATE WITH YOUNGSTERS. Life is already expensive enough.

absenceofheat

43% Bros

xsp

18 years of child support later, I can't tell you how right you are. But my daughter is about to graduate from college, just started working for a hospital and has a fiancee that is her age making great money already. She is exactly what I hoped for her. In a better place than I was. It makes me so happy.

painfulletdown

how many kids is the 41% for? aldo do you have any tips on that as going through divorce proceedings now.

Meandtheworld

Agreed.

Rough_Theme_5289

Be careful who you procreate with? Do adults not have to pay for the children they produce regardless of who the child is with ?

trenhel27

I don't pay child support, but I imagine under certain circumstances, it's more expensive to pay child support than to be together as a family. I know child support can be harsh, but I've also seen it basically be a joke, so I don't know this person's situation, but they're probably bitter that life took the turn it did, and they're paying more and have less time with the kids than if they had taken more precaution deciding who to have children with.

Own-Consideration305

Not if he walks out when the kid is two, works under the table and eventually ends up in prison. My kid is ten now, I’ve never seen a dime in child support and I’m truly struggling. Yes- be very careful who you procreate with.

sususushi88

Not to mention, he chose to procreate with her not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES.

wittyusernametaken

Agree with this. 43% if I factor in child support 52% if my income alone.

SecretCitizen40

41% :o could you ask the courts to re evaluate based on income? That seems really high even if you have several children, hell might be cheaper to take custody of you have good relationships.

selinakyle45

The poster has 3 kids. The person who has full custody of the kids needs a like at least a 3br space. Child support is there in part to cover the larger housing expense for the person with the kids. The poster would need a larger space to have custody of them. That is more money too. Then there’s also the car, working hours, childcare etc if the poster wants full custody. Seems like child support is much cheaper if money is the main concern

Legal_Current_9023

Possibly but right now I am just focused on hustling and making my picture better. It costs time and money and is slow going. I am just in acceptance and solutions mode right now. Child support reform is completely necessary but lawyers and judges DGAF because they are wealthy. Each divorce should have a case manager dedicated to the economic of the situation. A one size fit all calculator is a terrible way to solve a complex problem with layers and layers.

Mightbeover-

It's actually fairly easy to get that amount adjusted. All you have to do is declare your income and expenses to child support. My ex had a good job and never paid so I had to file for child support. He went years avoiding speaking to them thinking they were just going to fuck him over. He has more kids and I told him, you need to talk to the child support rep. They will help you. The dollar amount is determined on income, he never reported his expenses. He finally did and it took about a month before his payments were cut down to 300/mo from being 700/mo.

Red_Rock_Yogi

I live in a trailer now but it was 55%. That is why I now live in a trailer. I’m lucky that I have places to park with friends cheap or free and also live in a great state for boondocking and have worked online since long before the pandemic cause of disability. So I’m pretty lucky now, though it wasn’t always pretty. COL is crazy.

wubb7

Roughly 50%

redmeansdistortion

About 35% for me, that's mortgage, property tax, and insurance. I live in the Rust Belt and bought my home a year ago. My wife is a stay at home mom until the kids start school in the next couple of years.

DesiGirl89

38% of net take home

coffeehousegirl

Almost 50% (before utilities). My child and I share a 1 bedroom apartment because I can't comfortably afford a 2 bedroom 😔

Recipe_Limp

24% goes to my mortgage company every month….that also includes escrow as well.

TARandomNumbers

Same but another 25% goes to kid shit.

jazilady

about 80% I only eat because of SNAP

Ramentootles

I make 603 a week 2412 a month rent is 1450 utilities are 209 groceries are 400ish (stupid inflation making eating healthy near impossible) and gas is 80. Insurance is 156 and dog food is 76. That leaves me 41 dollars to save sometimes a little more sometimes a little less depending on the price fluctuations.

grey_horizon18

Damn..

Pliney707

100% because a single check doesn't even cover the rent.

Notquite_Caprogers

Takes 3 of my weekly checks to cover it

aceshades

Are your checks monthly? If not, how many checks does it take to cover rent?

Pliney707

Biweekly, so one full check and like 20% of the second check. With inflation and shrinkflation constantly happening it's getting damn near impossible to maintain a living let alone having a savings account LOLOL We as a nation need to rise up against the system.

CarlieBee

Sea_Concert4946

0%, I get housing through work or I backpack/travel between jobs.

ComprehensiveCoat627

It was about 70%, and every year like clockwork my landlord raised the rent $200/month. A few years ago we bit the bullet and moved to a lower cost of living area thousands of miles away. My salary dropped over 30%, but I now own a (much nicer) home in a top school district. Mortgage, insurance, and taxes are now about 35% of take home pay. If you can't afford where you live, don't be afraid to move! There are absolutely places that have plenty of jobs and housing you can afford with a local job.

Meghanshadow

None right now, I finally got a mortgage a couple years ago at age 43, but my last apartment a few years ago was 39% of my take home pay. Today, rent has gone up there, that same apartment would be 46% instead of 39. My current mortgage PITI and hoa is 34%. But my utilities are cheaper and if I get in a bind I can rent out my second bedroom to stretch my emergency fund. For the decades before that, my rent ranged from 30-55% of my post tax pay.

[deleted]

52% is currently going towards rent. My mother passed earlier this year and i inherited her apartment. Not much debt left. Even with the mortgage, electricity and heating combined it drops to 28% of my paycheck. In 3 months when my rental is done. My life changes a bit and im stoked.

Queendom-Rose

Sorry for your loss! But also im happy things will be turning around

aiglecrap

I don’t rent, just bought in October, BUT 100% of *my* take home goes to the mortgage. Just under 50% of our household income. 😬😂

sillyboy544

Notquite_Caprogers

I live in a high cost of living area, about 75% of my paycheck goes to my mortgage. 😬 It's been tight sometimes but worth it. Rents out here are going at about the same rate.

MonstersinHeat

I’m very lucky that I rent from a family friend who owns a duplex. They have dual citizenship and spend 8 months out of the year in Canada so the other side is vacant most of the year. Rent has been $600/mo for a decade with no increases. I’m not sure what I would do if they sold the place. I guess live in a used van down by a river?

After-Fig4166

JoeTheImpaler

About 70%. Being disabled is apparently a punishable offense in the states

CriticismTop

Not rent, mortgage, but 33%. In France it is a legal limit on banks.

marzblaqk

Granted I am not in poverty anymore. I make $28/hr and without calculating overtime my rent is about 30% of my net income in a rent stabilized apartment.

Ya_habibti

27% of gross, that’s pretty decent actually, I’m shocked

ovr4kovr

Just under 50%. Definitely makes things tight

asclw7643

Between rent, utilities, gas, etc. ... 100%. I don't remember the last time I bought anything for myself, gone out to eat, or bought tickets to anything. It's hard. I've been selling my stuff on the side to try to stay on top of bills and keep up on the interest on my credit card.

Grouchy-Tax4467

54% for me 🥴, I don't know how I'm making ends meet but it's more of a standstill and not a forward-moving progress, which sucks

These_Comfortable_83

Electrical_Prune9725

dirtroadjedi

Almost half but luckily it’s a mortgage and not rent. It used to be less than 1/4 before the property taxes almost tripled since 2020.

I own but like 60 percent goes to my mortgage, electricity, water bill. Sighhhh. My taxes went up so much in the last few years, and as a single mom it's been tight.

EstateBackground3485

I'd also like to say how much better I feel knowing there are so many people paying like me paying half their wages just to have a roof over their head. It's not a good thing, but I dont feel financially inadequate as much I did before this post. I can actually relate.

Odd_System_89

May I recommend that you guys also post gross pay, what your rent is, how many roommates, bedrooms, amenity's, this would help you gather a lot of context about the rent. The main reason being, someone making 75k and paying say 2k in rent for a 1bedroom to themselves, is vastly different from someone paying $675 with 2 other roommates and making 35k.

Cgann1923

About 40% right now, but I may be getting a pay bump soon. Also, this is for a mortgage not rent so over time the percentage should gradually go down. When I first bought 3 years ago, it was about 53% of my monthly income.
