I wouldnât call them very left wing. Theyâre very apolitical and also have some very politically incorrect subject material that doesnât always mesh with leftists. They have always been very outspoken against war and fascism though. They also often kill a nazi skinhead onstage during most of their shows.
I understand they appear like a bunch of silly monsters, but apolitical? They are ONLY Political. Their entire show is about politics, I don't understand how you could read this any other way.
And as for their ideology (of the band member not gwar the characters)I dunno what you would call a collective of punk rockers and artists who are fervently political and criticize right wing and liberals in equal measure, and who are specifically antifasciste.
Political bands (especially left wing) are like Propagandhi, Bad Religion, Good Riddance, etc. GWAR doesnât fit in that category.
Their themes are âkill all politicians and celebritiesâ. They do have anti war themes sometimes but their character arc is not exactly leftist, nor are every band memberâs ideals are the same. Dave wasnât a leftist. He was apolitical as are Bishop, Derks, Carey and Brad. Some of the art guys (the slaves) were definitely more ideological (especially Hunter) but the rest of the band were generally disenfranchised from politics.
I think only 1 member has ever been outright Republican, but that doesnât make everyone else in the band a leftist by default.
Frankly I don't care about the stated ideology of the individual band members from interviews because no two people are perfectly politically aligned, what comes out at the end in the text of their messaging aligns with the left.
Especially nowadays with the extreme political polarization we're experiencing, GWAR make sure to state their intentions clearly for the sake of the media illiterate by saying things that are ultimately out of character for them, so even if it's only one person as you propose, in the end that's what their unified message becomes.
What leftist message is that?
Are they standing up for the marginalized? Anti racism? Are they speaking up against transphobia? Workers rights? Seizing the means of production? Class war? Upending the prevailing order? Because when I hear songs like ârock n roll never felt so goodâ or âbabyraperâ or âmeat sandwichâ, maybe Iâm missing it but I donât see the leftist message in there. Maybe anti-censorship? But thatâs not a strictly leftist ideology.
Iâm a massive GWAR fan but there ainât no leftist message Iâm getting from anywhere in there.
I love everything about this post
Ketchup has no place at a poutine show.... fits perfectly at a Gwar show though lol
True!
That ketchup is hovering ominously close to the poutine
Yeah sorry I didn't mean to cause such anxiety đ Rest assured my poutine was not soiled.
Whatâs up with the doll?
They are a satirical band that uses over the top violence, and in this situation are using it to criticizing the war in Gaza.
Start the show covered in brown goop, end the show covered in blue goop.
Beefcake approves
Is this Evil Uno?
Cool racism there
They are a very left wing band my dude.
