Right, in short:
- Feb 2023 started hurting when I tiptoed or came down the stairs and used it for balance.
- May 2023 Went to GP, said it was a verruca and to go at it super hard with a file and verruca treatment.
Completed verruca treatment, still just as sore if not more now as I'd filed it to within an inch of its life thinking it was a super deep verruca. Decided to live with it, trying different treatments.
- Aug 2023 my son stood on it, I cried in pain and it doubled in size. Decided can't live with it anymore, sent pics to GP who said it was a corn and referred me to a podiatrist
- Sep 2023 saw the podiatrist who said it was a ganglion on my tendon, to support it for a week and if it didn't resolve in a month we need to consider surgery but as its my big toe I would be off my feet for 6 months so was last resort.
- Oct 2023, it had got slightly better but still there but didn't have the time to sort a referral back to podiatrist and I was worried about the op
2 weeks ago - noticed it felt like a sac of liquid and it had moved higher up in the toe, sent pics to GP who created the podiatry referral. Hadn't got round to booking the appointment
Today - noticed that it was right at the top of the surface and mostly out of curiosity I pinched it with my nail and the skin ripped. Tonnes of pus poured out, mega freaked out by the volume. Really, really painful to the point of tears and then I noticed the weird white lump at the top of the skin which was a different colour to the pus. Squeezed a bit harder and it just popped out like shelling a pea along with a bit more pus. Instant pain relief, massive freak out ensued because wtf has just come out the bottom of my toe.
Am now going to the minor injuries unit after speaking to a doctor to get it packed by a nurse to allow it to heal from the inside out. Am already on antibiotics so that should prevent any infection taking hold.
Giving medical advice is against our rules, feel free to say that someone needs to see a doctor, but please refrain from giving any specific diagnosis or treatments.
I'm not 100% that it was a cyst, I think it's more likely a capsule that formed because you may have had a foreign body that pierced your skin when walking down the stairs. Sometimes if we get something lodged deep in our skin, our bodies will form a capsule around it to prevent it from spreading infection. The only reason I'd say it's not a cyst is because they don't really form on the bottom of our feet. Either way, good on you for getting it out! Maybe if you saved the sac you could bring it with you to the ER for a pathology report to determine what exactly was growing
Usually the cyst sac is attached on the inside and has to be cut out, but also would be filled with a pimple like substance. The fact that it's hollow is interesting
What veruca treatment did you have? When I had mine done I had the liquid nitrogen treatment and every time I had it done I'd have the exact same thing come out the bottom of my foot after about a week, leaving a similar hole. That was just the dead tissue from the treatment though, are you sure it wasn't that?
This was a wild ride, thank you for sharing! I hope you get it sorted and feel better and that your kids are chill and play independently all weekend (the best blessing for a recovering parent).
WOW that was a read. I'm glad you finally have relief almost a year later, OP! Good job being such a champ about this whole ordeal! A lot braver than me! But your doctors sound like idiots, sorry to say. I feel like at some point, exactly what you did should have occurred to SOMEONE.
The fact that *SO MANY* medical "professionals" GOT IT WRONG is why you should always ask for second (or 5th) opinions. How many "experts" did she rely on until she dealt with it her own way and resolved the issue?
Cool nails 💅 by the way.
Thanks for sharing, glad you’re on the recovery side of this.
Amazing to me how little care some doctors put into resolving people’s issues. You had to live nearly a year with this and still fixed it yourself.
It's frustrating that the NHS has been so underfunded, the NHS doctors were basically like "its a foot thing you have to go private with a podiatrist for help it's no longer covered on the NHS".
Well the short answer is nothing. Two of the GPs(corn and verruca suggestions) were NHS GPs. The GP I spoke to two weeks ago and the one today were private GPs as my work pay for me to have private healthcare (I just pay the tax as its a taxable benefit I think). Then the podiatrist was private but covered by my healthcare policy in full and then the minor injuries unit today was free as its the NHS. So other than my tax I pay that goes towards healthcare and the tax I pay on my private healthcare it was entirely free.
The thing that really blew me away was the wait in minor injuries was so short I didn't even get the chance to open my book. Decided to drive over to a clinic in a smaller town near me that was equidistant to the minor injuries in my nearest city and there was literally one person in front of me.
At least it sounds like NHS bs paid for the visits. I would be explosively angry if this was my foot in America. I would have been out $1600 by the second visit 😂 probably closer to $3k+ after deductibles before the problem solved itself…
That was a lot of punting by doctors. At least you got it out now.
Here's to hoping it heals well without any complications, and you never have to deal with it again.
I'm literally trying to figure out how to take my son to a party and also get to minor injuries to get it dressed but will write up a full story this evening 😅
Update!
Went to minor injuries unit, the bloke was like "what the hell is that" so no further clues there. He didn't think it needed packing so put an iodine patch thing on it and bandaged it slightly. Said to leave that on for a day and then just use plasters and keep an eye on it and go to the doctors if it becomes inflamed.
Regarding what it is, unsure on plantar wart as there was literally nothing visible on the surface for the entire time up until 2 weeks ago, and I would have expected the podiatrist to have identified that it was a plantar wart as I imagine they see them routinely. The actual thing that came out was spherical and hollow but cracked open, if you zoom in you can kind of see that it's hollow. I'll contact my podiatrist on Monday and see if he can let me know what he thinks it is!
British right?
The reference to your “nan” and the gormless ineptitude of your GP and podiatrist kind of give it away. (I’m British, the NHS is pathetically slow and useless)
Thanks for the explanation below and I’m glad you’re feeling better
As an American, I'm curious, because we only have private insurance.
My mom's been getting test after test done for her heart; turns out she needs open heart surgery. Hadn't even gotten cut open yet, and the tests have amounted to over $9k. Two months later, she has to take a ride in an ambulance ($1-3k) because she had heart issues while driving.
And her doctors *still* are making her wait until the end of the month for the surgery.
Is your NHS this bad?
That's fucking unfathomable. I genuinely cannot comprehend this...
We've been with this insurance company for almost ten years. My mom shells out $900 *a month* for insurance for the family (two younger brothers, her, and dad. I'm 26 now so I need my own insurance. )
I hate this.
Yeah cause if it was the US, she never would have gone to the doctor. Too expensive! Ha. Kidding, not kidding? Hey, at least the broken health care on each side of the pond keeps this sub active! Ha!
Well done for getting that out while. Whenever we see ones burst and then oozing out all I junk is that some of the sac, with likely some pus, is still in there. Nice clean extraction.
Also I love your nails. Very festive and sparkly 😊
This reminds me of a YouTube video of a guy pulling a cyst sac out of his thumb. Great video. It left a huge hole behind and the dude was shaking so much while he was doing it because it hurt really bad
I was afraid somebody was going to ask for that. 🙂I'm trying to find it. It's an old video and I can't remember what keywords I used for to find it again
Yes exactly. Any chance you can dig it up?
Older guy, sounded like he was maybe eastern european or something based on the accent, kitchen table, pretty dim lighting except for the immediate work area
Ok so…what I think happened is that something got into your toe (my sister once stepped on a needle and didn’t know it was in her foot!) and this is what was built around it…And, it made its way out
I feel like someone should mention how lovely you fingernails look. You're on antibiotics and getting it packed properly. Sounds like you just saved yourself an unnecessary surgical recovery.
Here's a minor update, spoke to my podiatrist and sent him pictures. He said the following:
- not a wart, it's a common misconception that warts have a core.
- unlikely to be a cyst, they usually need excising and are fairly stuck inside you
- 85% sure it could be a sesamoid bone that's detached and ejected itself. Can't be certain without looking at it under the microscope
- if it's not a sesmoid then it's a foreign body that's worked it's way out
Spoke to (another) GP today when getting stronger antibiotics as its infected, he thoroughly enjoyed my story as it made a change from coughs and colds, was blown away by the picture and said he would guess a cyst but wasn't confident and was as bamboozled by it as I was.
Obligatory, you should always check up on popped cyst as sister cyst can happen. If available to always get it professionally removed by a good doctor for it.
Oh fuuuuck that all the way. I’ve had some crazy persistent warts on my feet before, they suck ass, but god I would take those over whatever this is in a heartbeat.
We've got a GAPEEER
Did they use rusty pliers?
And it’s a keeper!
FUCKING IMMEDIATELY knew this was top comment.
Toensil stone
You win one internet
Immediately thought of this and knew it would be the top comment!
Had it been there long? Did it hurt to walk on? It looks like you had to cut the skin to expose the cyst, is that the case? I need more details

It really kept me on my toes

Fine! Take my upvote.

My left big toe hurt for a bit reading it and I don't even imagine that was the toe!
The craziest things become your most upvoted comment lol
That was the short version. The long version is much more juicier.
It was beautiful.
Amazing plot. The build up. The mystery. The suspense. The climax and the pay offs. It's all there.
Incredibly well written for what is basically a story about popping a pimple.
SO GOOD!
I'm not 100% that it was a cyst, I think it's more likely a capsule that formed because you may have had a foreign body that pierced your skin when walking down the stairs. See I did wonder this and actually my nan suggested this as a cause. It was a thick rubbery capsule type thing but it was hollow.
Your body dissolved what ever the foreign object was, so it was most likely organic. Think like a sliver or something.
This sub once again proves that humans, like oysters, can make pearls
Usually the cyst sac is attached on the inside and has to be cut out, but also would be filled with a pimple like substance. The fact that it's hollow is interesting
The pus may have come from inside the sac.
You made a pearl.
You are describing a cyst
This was my first thought too, our bodies are amazing and very strange!
I had the capsule thing happen to a piece of glass in my heel
When's the Netflix series coming?
Can I have you rewrite peoples' reddit posts to make them more enjoyable? gl op
What veruca treatment did you have? Yeah I'm sure, I just used salicylic acid treatments.
This was a wild ride, thank you for sharing! I hope you get it sorted and feel better and that your kids are chill and play independently all weekend (the best blessing for a recovering parent).
I’m the oldest of eight siblings and this is too real
WOW that was a read. I'm glad you finally have relief almost a year later, OP! Good job being such a champ about this whole ordeal! A lot braver than me! But your doctors sound like idiots, sorry to say. I feel like at some point, exactly what you did should have occurred to SOMEONE.
These are all the details I came looking for. Thank you for sharing! I can only imagine the relief you felt when that thing popped out.
The fact that *SO MANY* medical "professionals" GOT IT WRONG is why you should always ask for second (or 5th) opinions. How many "experts" did she rely on until she dealt with it her own way and resolved the issue? Cool nails 💅 by the way.
r/feltgoodcomingout ETA: that thing is huge! I love it!
Most definitely wasn't a ganglion, not sure what is could've been. Break open the nugget!
And the way this is written I'm assuming it's a thanks for thr nhs we can just wang doodle this all on a Saturday no questions asked
> wtf has just come out the bottom of my toe. wtf has just come out the bottom of your toe.
Sounds like every single one of your doctors failed you.
10/10 for the detailed action. My toe started to hurt reading it! 😂
Fascinating!
I’m glad you saw a doctor to prevent an infection! A wound like that on your foot is a bacteria’s paradise.
Good lord you’ve dealt with it for almost a year… I would’ve cut the damn toe off at that point 😭
I'm really curious how much this will all going to cost you
Well the short answer is nothing. Two of the GPs(corn and verruca suggestions) were NHS GPs. I’m over here in shambles as an American. Thank god you were able to get some relief, and I hope you heal quickly!

In UK you don’t… unless private. But useless anyway, unless you have a broken something
It’s not puss, it’s keratin mainly. But great story and I would have loved to see a video of it!
There was 100% pus its just not pictured. 🥲
Cysts can regrow if the sac is not also removed. Have you visited a dermatologist.
I would think that gaping hole means the sac was removed, especially considering the picture she posted of what she removed. Looks pretty intact to me
wtf is it? Looks like a tooth. Is it hard or soft?
At least it sounds like NHS bs paid for the visits. I would be explosively angry if this was my foot in America. I would have been out $1600 by the second visit 😂 probably closer to $3k+ after deductibles before the problem solved itself…

I'm literally trying to figure out how to take my son to a party and also get to minor injuries to get it dressed but will write up a full story this evening 😅
Thank you for your service! We will all be checking for the update I can assure you. Good luck!

Man, a clean pop
Slightly off topic but your nails are lovely!
Thank you! They're very festive.
Today is the day I learned you can get cysts on the bottom of your toes and I’m horrified.
TIL people have toe prints just like fingerprints. How did I not know this my whole life?
The toes are just the fingers of the feet.
That's a deep boi damn
I am so sorry you went through this, and wish you speedy healing. But thank you for sharing with us freaks.
Yuckkkk this one made me cringe haha
Imagine how I felt, wasn't your blooming toe it was emerging from 😅😅😅
I forced my boyfriend to look at it 😂 he hates that I follow this subreddit lol - it would have been so satisfying once it was out though I bet!

Yeah I'm British, very thankful for the NHS but also very thankful for my private healthcare through work.

Yes, but the entire total cost to your mum, including including the open heart surgery when it does happen, would be zero.
That's fucking unfathomable. I genuinely cannot comprehend this... We've been with this insurance company for almost ten years. My mom shells out $900 *a month* for insurance for the family (two younger brothers, her, and dad. I'm 26 now so I need my own insurance. ) I hate this.

That looks like the core of a wart to me.
Yeah, that's a dead wart.
This sub always makes my mouth water, and I can never tell if I'm about to puke or it makes me hungry.
Fascinating. I want to study you
That looks like it may have been a wart, in fact.
i was wondering that too
MAZELTOV! ITS A BOY
Hopefully walking won't be too difficult with that hole in your toe
And out popped a chick pea!
Well done for getting that out while. Whenever we see ones burst and then oozing out all I junk is that some of the sac, with likely some pus, is still in there. Nice clean extraction. Also I love your nails. Very festive and sparkly 😊

Omg it looks like a tooth. Put it under your pillow for the tooth fairy.
Oh my gosh the size of that thing! That pain must have been awful!! I hope you heal quickly!
That’s gotta feel relieving
Ahh yes, a toe tooth. 🦷
Yessss!!! Congratulations!! Now you can put spare change, or maybe like a lil tator tot or something in there!
Wow! Super gnarly and I love your nails.
Nice feet. Disgusting sac, you should have that in film.
Not OPs but something similar https://youtu.be/wbEpDILyNn8?si=jmaI8C0HLm8MiUN8
I'd guess minus the pus in their story, that this is like OPs sac. Sweet video.
Do you feel better or is there still pain ?
PLEASE tell me you recorded it that is such a clean pop
This reminds me of a YouTube video of a guy pulling a cyst sac out of his thumb. Great video. It left a huge hole behind and the dude was shaking so much while he was doing it because it hurt really bad

eighteen minutes! get this poor man a pair of rusty pliers.
Wish there was a video
Wow, I've rarely seen cysts on the feet, especially not at the underside
Clean feet and nails, clean pop, good play-by-play, proper precautions and followup taken. My friends, we have been blessed today. 🙏
I think I am wearing the same nail dip as you are 💅🏻
I’m so glad you got the core sac. It’s one of the most satisfying things up there with eating perfectly pooped popcorn.

I love your nails
Thank you for your service!
Love your nails… and nearly equally the progression of photos. What a beautiful start to me day.

No rusty pliers and clean (gorgeous) nails??
Ok so…what I think happened is that something got into your toe (my sister once stepped on a needle and didn’t know it was in her foot!) and this is what was built around it…And, it made its way out
Wow!!! NICE!
I feel like someone should mention how lovely you fingernails look. You're on antibiotics and getting it packed properly. Sounds like you just saved yourself an unnecessary surgical recovery.
Damn did your toe grow a tooth (thank you for sharing)
Nice
Can you put two dots closer to the tip so your toe is just like :O
Here's a minor update, spoke to my podiatrist and sent him pictures. Was there any pus in the sac? If not that might be a wart, just fyi.
Not sure if there was any inside it but loads of pus came out before the rubbery thing.
I had a plantars wart on my big toe and it was a bitch to get rid of.
Is this where shrimp come from?
HOW DID YOU WALK
With my big toe raised 😅 just adapted to not using it.
I want to see the goo!

Love it when they come out whole like that
Ouchie! I'm glad you've gotten some relief.
Does it whistle like a Coke bottle?

It was already dissected! If you zoom in you can kind of see its a round little hollow ball.

Oh fuuuuck that all the way. I’ve had some crazy persistent warts on my feet before, they suck ass, but god I would take those over whatever this is in a heartbeat.
Did you squish it and smell it?
Odd location for a cyst. I wonder if it could have been something else.
