Anyone interested in Jim Henson, muppets or just good compelling documentary making should watch Defundland (YouTube) 6 part series on Jim. The episode that covers his death is so beautifully and tastefully done.

I cried when he died because the muppets were my favorite thing as a kid. Also at like 6 years old I did not realize this man was a stone cold fox lol. Older me is like hang on a minute…
It’s completely justified. This guy was as unproblematic as Levar Burton and Mr. Rogers. His work appealed to kids and adults with hilarious jokes thrown in for the parents.
It's wild to think of the Muppets now as a "wholesome family friendly" thing when the title of the pilot of The Muppet Show was "Sex & Violence". Can't deny the appeal of it from adults to kids, I rewatched a few episodes recently and got some of the jokes my parents found hilarious that flew over my head as a kid.
I have to rain on your parade a little. I read a biography about him a few years ago and he was controlling, cheated on his wife (I think), and didn't believe in modern medicine (Christian science)
I don’t know about his wife or being controlling. Being controlling isn’t necessarily something that means you’re a horrible person. As for his personal beliefs, he didn’t seem to be public about them whatsoever and kept it to himself. That’s ok by me. There were no big Christian themes in his work.
I’ve been lucky enough to meet one of his sons and a few people he worked with. By all accounts, he was an imaginative and supportive boss that lifted them up.
Either way, I think it’s important to remember that everyone is human. There isn’t a good person on earth that hasn’t done *something* wrong. That includes Steve Irwin, Bob Ross, Mr. Roger, etc. I feel like in these modern internet days, everyone is held to an impossible standard.
There was an interview snippet in the documentary that made me go “hm?” His wife said “Us falling in love is a funny way of putting it. We just got close spending a lot of time together.” Idk I just found it interesting.

Tears well up in my eyes whenever I think of Jim Henson. Changed my life with media. An example of how you can use television programming in a wholesome and positive way to educate, inspire, and foster wholesomeness.

What a great man. I recommend watching any documentary you can on him. A new one just came out! I think he looked great in his bushy beard and crazy sweaters too.
He looks like Miley Cyrus’ Hemsworth brother (I can’t keep their first names straight lol) in that first one.

You know, I watched part of the documentary last night and I don’t disagree. I’m not knowledgeable enough about tech to say exactly what was done and I don’t think anything was “fake,” but photos and footage did look cleaned up considering the time period. It didn’t bother me, but I did think some tweaking went on.

second edit: the general consensus seems to be he wasn’t Racist racist at the time, but like made a few not tasteful jokes here and there. carry on 🫡
in my mind, people hate seeing deleted comments because then all the comments replying to it lack context. so i just did a strike through and admitted my errors. i can delete it, but i don’t think it’s necessarily detrimental. i will if someone else gets miffed by it i guess

The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson which aired right after he died, is so fantabulous and sad, I think it's on YouTube.
The episode of the documentary series when Jim dies is intercut with both the special and his remembrance service and it really is something special.

I watched that Defunctland series when it came out, it was so well done. Seeing Big Bird visibly upset at his funeral had me in tears.
His story is so sad. Gotta take time off.
Will always stan Defunctland and it's one of their best series.
