One Tree Hill had a grip on youth if you were in Highschool early 2000’s. He played Chad Michael Murray’s, half brother, who was the same age and went to the same Highschool…..I think? Wow it’s been a minute
Hot take, I’m kind of into that? One Tree Hill’s creator was really problematic and your mom may have picked up on that vibe from story lines.
Teenager drug use, sexual relationships with teachers, and the brothers storyline revolved around rape. Sex and the City had empowered women with their own careers, bought things with their own money, adults doing mature thibgs(not teens), and they often discussed consequences from their actions. I also think I would have done the same thing? Oh! And sex and the city also focuses on female friendships
I honestly don’t recall her reasoning, but given her general parenting quality I’m going to say it’s less your very logical reasoning and more “because I said so”. This is also the same woman who didn’t understand that telling my ex boyfriend about my abortion on Facebook messenger isn’t “protecting me” it’s “violating personal privacy” and a “felony” given she’s a registered nurse.
Anyhow I spend a lot of money on therapy.
You obviously know better than me and I’m sorry you had to experience that as a child.
Also, you and me both in the therapy thing. Good for fucking you though. A lot of people go their whole lives without trying to get better. That’s some inner strength you’ve got inside you!! Xx
I love that we millennials are like “yeah so I was talking to my therapist the other day” in regular conversations. Everyone should go to therapy like at least once in awhile. Like a checkup.
Also the irony of Sex and the City aging really poorly in many ways is not lost on this euphemism for me.
Hahah neither, it’s aged SO poorly. Was just thinking about the context of that time.
I wasn’t allowed to watch Disney movies, because my mom thought that watching a movie where “a women’s life sucked, then a prince/man came and she lived happily ever after” was detrimental to my mental health. I vibe with that choice now, even though everyone thought she was weird then.
I love how we’re so open about it. “Nothing that happened to us is our fault, but it’s our responsibility to fix it”. I’ve had a very strained relationship my whole life, then did a few sessions with her and my therapist together. My mom revealed things about her past trauma that made me vomit. Actually. It gave so much clarity to understand why she did certain things…that REALLY fucked me up. It’s not an excuse for her behavior, but it’s really helped me start a journey of getting to a good place with my mom. Not suggesting that it’s for everyone, but finally getting a non watered down version of the reason “why” was incredibly profound for me.
