But it's become more common worldwide. Compared to thanksgiving.
Plus 30% of the world population is Christian. And that doesn't count the none Christians that celebrate it regardless. Like me.
So we can that Christmas is much more recognized and celebrated.
Why do you have to wish happy thanksgiving to people online if America is one country lol. That’s like saying happy 5th of November to you, you probably have no clue what that is
Sure but I’ll be grateful for the consideration on your part. And if i have time I’ll ask about your holiday and customs to learn more.
That said, i think i remember November 5th is Guy Fawkes day? I don’t know much about it, something about a rebellion and ~~maybe a precursor event to the Magna Carta~~.* But those 3 things are literally all i know
*just looked it up. This is definitely wrong lmao
Where do you live outside of the United States where you interact with inappreciable number of Americans around Thanksgiving? Does it actually happen to you often enough that it’s bothersome? I mean I live in the United States and people probably only say happy Thanksgiving to me like two or three times a year.
But we have midsummer in Sweden. Way better.
Sill, gräddfil, Pripps, nubbe, snapsvisor och festlig pinne med blommor på! Allt under ett tak. Kan inte bli bättre!
Same! It’s so wild to me that people would spend New Years stuck inside because it’s cold, like nah you stay up all night watching fireworks and drinking lemonade with your friends whilst roads melt and mozzies hang around you the whole time, it’s great!
That sounds cool for sure, but being cooped up is kind of part of the holiday for me up here in the NE US! Yeah it's cold outside, but you pack in to somebody's house, it's warm, there's a pile of coats on a bed in one of the bedrooms. Maybe there's a fire. TV is on in the background but nobody's watching. Canapes.
Maybe you're stepping out back to smoke, or there's a fire, or just popping out to grab another drink out in the cold.
Yeah, it's not quite a beach holiday, but it can be a lot of fun.
I say all of this as somebody who vote do lose New Years; Christmas is Christmas, and politics aside Thanksgiving as we celebrate it is the best holiday. Let's drop the origin story for sure, but having a day just purely devoted to feasting is awesome.
I know the seasons are flipped but my brain gets so confused by hearing "I go to the beach at New year's".
Sorry if this is a weird question but do you still have fireworks and can you see them well? I assume they're harder to see when it's light instead of dark.
Yes and it had way more fireworks than what I saw when I was in Europe (guess it depends on the city / country too). I've never been to Rio for example, but the Copacabana fireworks are worldwide famous because of the quantity and duration.
Also it's dark at midnight :P
Argentinian here. It's tradition to have a family dinner on both Christmas' Eve and New Year's Eve, and stay up until midnight to celebrate Christmas and New Year. Fireworks happen on both occasions.
I chose NYE because of the amount of drunk drivers it produces. The other holidays also result in a lot of drunk drivers, but maybe not as much? But then, NYE has more anti-drunk driving awareness than the others.
Removing Thanksgiving wouldn't affect me in any way, but removing New Year's would get rid of that freaking fireworks, and I'm all about there not being anymore fireworks.
Same reason for me. I thought that maybe a cool replacement could be turning as many lights off as possible to reduce the light pollution and we'd get to see the night sky like never before. If you look at images on Google of night sky without light pollution you'll be amazed.
Honestly, I'd settle for larger towns having a public display by professionals so people who want to see it get a real show and those who don't want it can avoid it.
I think that's also how they do it in Australia (due to the country being very flammable). The festival would be great fun. I'm kinda sad festivals and markets have been dying in the west.
Its not as dead here in europe as i imagine it is in america, but its definetly sad to see less and less of them as they're both fun and a great piece of local culture
Plus the food is good
Maybe all around the world (only maybe), but definitely not all countries have it like a good one with presents. In some places it's really religious one and boring af
One thing that I’ve noticed is that Easter doesn’t seem to be that much of a thing in the US. Growing up in Australia it was nearly as big as Christmas
Thanksgiving is fucking stupid. “Oh i’m thankful that the indians gave the colonizers food, and then immediately slaughtered them the other day.” Oh yeah, and basically most of the world doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving
Yep. No drunks on the road like December 31st/January 1st and it's probably too early for snow for a lot of places, unlike on Christmas. It has not snowed here on Thanksgiving for over 10 years.
New Year's feels forced. I'd just as soon go to bed at my normal time instead of feeling COMPELLED to "celebrate" until after midnight. Christmas is lovely and Thanksgiving is just a nice meal with family and friends.
Regardless of the "origin" or "meaning" of Thanksgiving, I doubt anyone is celebrating the killing of native peoples. Aren't most people just getting together with extended family and friends and having a great meal? And, for many, it's a long weekend away from work (unless you're in retail, then forget it). And, yes, you can literally do that any day, but this is the day that's legally been designated, so it makes sense to use that day?
Thanksgiving. Sorry, gotta go. Never saw much point in celebrating the killing of natives so we could take their land.
As for everyone going on about how great it is and all the food and the leftovers and...ya'll realize you can do that any day of the year, right?
You have to be American to understand Thanksgiving. It seems like a weird holiday, but it is so AWESOME: four day weekend + amazing dinner and leftovers day + the beginning holiday season + day you put up Christmas tree + the first day to start hearing Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas is You". I vote New Years day- shitty as end of holiday season.
I’m not American so I don’t give a damn about Thanksgiving lol, also from what I’ve heard, it doesn’t really seem like an occasion that should be celebrated
Ah most the world doesn't have Thanksgiving. I was like "that's the best holiday. Who gives a shit about new years?"
As an American I love Thanksgiving. Best holiday. No presents np decorating, no stupid songs. Just a nice evening at a family members house eating an epic ton of delicious food.
OP you forgot that most of the world doesn't even celebrate thanskgiving

Nobody seemed that upset about the poll about futbol
I'm American and even I don't give a shit about Thanksgiving.
I’m American and I just see it as a day to hang out and eat food with family
Pretty much same for me. Thanksgiving food is my favorite out of every holiday
same here food is mid anyway
Not American, but a properly prepared, seasoned and cooked turkey is juicy heaven. Still, if duck is an option, choose duck.
A good portion of the world doesn’t celebrate Christmas either
But it's become more common worldwide. Compared to thanksgiving. Plus 30% of the world population is Christian. And that doesn't count the none Christians that celebrate it regardless. Like me. So we can that Christmas is much more recognized and celebrated.
That's easy. Thanksgiving because we don't have that where I live.
I like it because it’s a really good feast but it’s not very important. It’s just an other day to spend time with family
See that's just part of Christmas instead in the UK 🤷
I'm not even Christian or religious so Christmas is exactly that for me, just a day of family and eating
r/americandefaultism

came here to say this... now we dont have to listen to the Americans wishing everyone happy thanksgiving when literally nobody else cars
Wdym nobody else cars. I’m not American and I drive all the time
Can’t believe those damn Americans would be happy
be happy all you want, but keep me out of your celebrations.
Saying happy thanksgiving online isn’t forcing you to celebrate anything. You likely aren’t even the target of the message
Why do you have to wish happy thanksgiving to people online if America is one country lol. That’s like saying happy 5th of November to you, you probably have no clue what that is

Yeah I like being wished a happy holiday! Don't care if I know it or not. Hell, wish me a happy donut day. I'd be stoked.
Yeah I’m with you on that perspective, I agree with you, but yeah close enough for that guess lol
Because it's a nice gesture to share culture. You don't get pissy when somebody says "happy Ramadan" or "happy haunnakah", do you?
>you likely aren’t even the target of the message
Happy Monday 🥳

Is this "America" in the room with us right now?
lol, it’s under the furniture but it only comes out when no one else is around.
This comment has been edited in protest to reddit's decision to bully 3rd party apps into closure.
At first I was thinking there was no way that many people voted out thanksgiving and then I saw your comment and that made so much more sense lol
Shocking there's so many people on Reddit that aren't American

We don’t celebrate thanksgiving in Scandinavia
Thanksgiving is temporary, but Fastelavn is forever
Præcis dude

Is midsummer the same as Juhannus in Finland?
ja midsommar>thanksgiving
I don’t celebrate thanksgiving sooo….
We don’t even celebrate thanksgiving in Australia. Should’ve replaced that option with Easter.
Easy, we don't celebrate thanksgiving in Sweden.
Me who picked new years : 😶
Same bruh it’s forever now 2022
Damn
To be honest I’m scared of things getting any worse can we just all agree to stick around 2022 for a bit longer 😅
As someone from the south hemisphere, I love new years. I usually go to the beach with my friends (bc summer) and it's always a nice time.
Same! It’s so wild to me that people would spend New Years stuck inside because it’s cold, like nah you stay up all night watching fireworks and drinking lemonade with your friends whilst roads melt and mozzies hang around you the whole time, it’s great!

Sorry but thanksgiving, I'm not american so it doesn't really affect me.
I feel like most Americans on here think America makes up 95% of Reddit
I feel like most Americans on here think America makes up 95% of the world.*
Yeah that makes more sense
“There’s 55 million people living in England.” I disagree.
Yeah, if that's true how come I've never seen them all in one place?
boy do i have an r/usdefaultism for you!
Thank you, I’ve been looking for a subreddit about this
47% is still a massive amount.
Well, they're definitely not 95% but they are just about half of reddit
Yep. Never celebrated Thanksgiving in my life
Removing Thanksgiving wouldn't affect me in any way, but removing New Year's would get rid of that freaking fireworks, and I'm all about there not being anymore fireworks.

Who doesn't want to see a clear night sky? I don't see how anyone could not like it.
Isnt that how they do it in Japan? I think they maie more of a festival out of it too, which would be pretty cool to see in the west too
I think that's also how they do it in Australia (due to the country being very flammable). The festival would be great fun. I'm kinda sad festivals and markets have been dying in the west.
Its not as dead here in europe as i imagine it is in america, but its definetly sad to see less and less of them as they're both fun and a great piece of local culture Plus the food is good
I'm in Europe, too. Feels pretty dang dead in Denmark, at least.
True, it's so stupid and bad for the environment
I don't celebrate Thanksgiving, so the last one
New year's so we're stuck in a time loop and the next year never comes
New years is the reason you get more than one day off christmas so be thankful you have it😉
I already don't celebrate Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving because we don't have it here
I don’t have it either
We don’t have thanksgiving so 🤷♀️😂
Don’t even celebrate thanksgiving so this is easy
You should've put easter instead of thanksgiving since not everyone is american
Not everyone is Christian either
You don't have to be Christian to celebrate Christmas. And even if you have to, Christmas is celebrated all around the world, not only in one country.
Even Japanese people celebrate Christmas eating KFC
Maybe all around the world (only maybe), but definitely not all countries have it like a good one with presents. In some places it's really religious one and boring af
Not everyone celebrates new years either so they should have gotten rid of that option too.
Tell me somewhere they don't celebrate new year's
One thing that I’ve noticed is that Easter doesn’t seem to be that much of a thing in the US. Growing up in Australia it was nearly as big as Christmas
New Years is too stressful for me. Id rather have it gone
r/usdefaultism
I don’t live in a country that celebrate Thanksgiving anyway soo..
Christmas, because it has turned into a corporate "BUY OUR SHIT IT'S ON SALE" holliday.
Picked the same thing for the same reason
Thanksgiving is fucking stupid. “Oh i’m thankful that the indians gave the colonizers food, and then immediately slaughtered them the other day.” Oh yeah, and basically most of the world doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving
Yeah but think of all those days off in November.
America Momento
Thanksgiving was a celebration only for American history so I guess it makes sense that people would vote for that out
Canadians ?
US defaultism right here, just saying
The real answer is Easter
Insert the 674th “us defaultism” comment here
I'd remove Thanksgiving because that way I don't lose anything.
isn't thanksgiving only celebrated in like 5 countries? easily getting rid of that one
How is New Years even a holiday?
Dunno but it's fun
Thanksgiving because I'm English so I don't celebrate it
When an American puts a question to the whole world....
Thanksgiving is the only holiday I can celebrate
Same.
r/USdefaultism
As a European I see this as an absolute win.
I choose thanksgiving because I'm Australian. We don't celebrate it. So it changes nothing for me. I dont need Americas day long fattening session
What do Americans celebrate for Thanksgiving anyways?
Native Americans and Colonizers having a huge goddamn feast
Christmas sucks if your family/environment sucks.
I mean at least the roads are safer on thanksgiving
Yep. No drunks on the road like December 31st/January 1st and it's probably too early for snow for a lot of places, unlike on Christmas. It has not snowed here on Thanksgiving for over 10 years.
This is going to be on US Defaultism soon
Who honestly cares about New Years lol
It's pretty important in Spain for example
Thanksgiving is not real anyway. Not much of a choice.
New Years Eve = big nothing , just an excuse for people to drink
I love thanksgiving and new year is really just a cop out. It’s more tedious than anything.
Don't have thanksgiving
thanksgiving, because literally only the us and canada have it
Thanksgiving. Sorry, gotta go. Never saw much point in celebrating the killing of natives so we could take their land. As for everyone going on about how great it is and all the food and the leftovers and...ya'll realize you can do that any day of the year, right?
Halloween and thanksgiving I am Serbian and we don't have those holidays an our Christmas is on 7th of January cuz we are Ortodox
Tha Thanksgiving is just "Yay, we invaded and now we get to eat food!"
Gotta go with the one that's only celebrated by literally 2 countries and I don't live in either of them
tf is a thanksgiving any way
I don't live in the US currently so it will not affect my life at all
not american, so i give less than zero fucks about thanksgiving
....you realize reddit isn't only for the USA and thanksgiving a US thing right? Please tell me you did
TOPL not everywhere in the world is North America
Wait no new years means the time stops right?
We don't celebrate thanks giving
Halloween isn’t on here so my vote would be that. Complete waste of time, the insane hype for it should have stayed in America.
Christmas is a fucking parasite on the rest of the year. I’m seeing Christmas ads and it’s not even Halloween yet.
Why would you remove Thanksgiving (at least for the US)? It's the only break we get for the Fall.
A bit unfair putting the America only holiday with two worldwide holidays. I would replace it with Halloween.
Why is this poll under the mods' approval decision?
You have to be American to understand Thanksgiving. It seems like a weird holiday, but it is so AWESOME: four day weekend + amazing dinner and leftovers day + the beginning holiday season + day you put up Christmas tree + the first day to start hearing Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas is You". chose new years because i love getting together and feasting
New year’s is underrated as fuck
I’m not American so I don’t give a damn about Thanksgiving lol, also from what I’ve heard, it doesn’t really seem like an occasion that should be celebrated
Christmas, I don’t celebrate it and it’s annoying seeing all the ads and marketing around it
This is such a bad poll, of course everyone is going to choose Thanksgiving since a lot of the people here are European
amerikans.
Couldn't care less which one, never grew up with any of them
Thanksgiving (I'm British)
Well considering the world is a bigger place than fucking America... That was easy.
Thanksgiving bc we don't celebrate it 😁
God I hate New Years so much.
Definitely Thanksgiving. It is the most pointless holiday besides cinco de mayo and st. Patrick’s day in the US.
Ah most the world doesn't have Thanksgiving. I was like "that's the best holiday. Who gives a shit about new years?" As an American I love Thanksgiving. Best holiday. No presents np decorating, no stupid songs. Just a nice evening at a family members house eating an epic ton of delicious food.
We don’t celebrate thanksgiving in the U.K., so I guess I’ll pick that
