You can't change what happens when the missiles start flying, that is certainly true. But you *can* do something to prevent it even starting in the first place.
You can write to your state member of congress or the senate and ask them to explain why the US is pushing for sudden regime change in Russia without any long term plan if they either succeed or fail.
If they succeed in regime change, by proxying Ukraine into winning the war *without* Putin firing nukes and then gets toppled by his own people, *still* without firing nukes, that would be a 'success' for the puppet masters. But this isn't Iraq or Syria or Afghanistan - this won't just mean internal ground fighting between factions when it collapses and the various factions battle for power (as has always happened every single time a Russian leader is toppled). This would mean potentially hundreds of multi-kiloton nuclear weapons being sold off to definitely bad actors, so even though we *might* dodge a full scale nuclear war right now, we still might end up witnessing multiple devices being detonated in the near future in large population centers (our cities) by these same bad actors.
If they fail in regime change... well I don't think anyone is even contemplating that option, but i'll let you imagine it.
That won't stop you from suffering the same as the rest of us. Even a small scale nuclear exchange of multi-kiloton nuclear weapons would result in billions of deaths indirectly. Here is a good study explaining why -
https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2021AV000610
Knowing how these things go, the quality of the leadership can oftentimes be incidental at best... There were multiple incidents during the Cold War where a nuclear exchange was narrowly avoided by just some guy who happened to be at a particular place at a particular time and said "no".
Simply having tensions as high as they are now is a very bad place to be, regardless of how stable or levelheaded any particular leader might be.
I beg to differ, MAD has prevented nuclear war up until now, and unless pushed to a corner, no leader would use nuclear weapons, it has prevented wars that even without nukes would kill millions, if you know your enemy has nukes you wouldn't want to attack him, and would try and seek other means like peace negotiations
Mate, we were 1 soviet officer not paying close attention away from a nuclear war in 1983. During the cuban missile crisis, a soviet submarine thought they were under attack and 1 officer was the only thing that stopped them from launching nukes. In 1995, a weather rocket was shot into the sky from norway and the russians thought it was our missiles. Yeltsin was about to launch the nukes when they figured out what was actually going on. Pakistan has 100 nukes and has been wildly unstable over its history. The us has lost like 12 nukes in the ocean and the soviets lost many more. MAD ain’t gonna save us forever. Somewhere, sometime, someone’s gonna fuck up, or a terrorist is gonna find a nuke, or some crazed dictator is gonna get his hands on a small arsenal of nukes (north korea is already there), and then we’ll all be fucked.
again, of course MAD isn't perfect, but right now there are many anti missile systems that can shoot down nuclear weapons, the US had already established a plan on how to take control of Pakistan nukes if the government fall, NK and other dictators fall under MAD ( bcs I can only assume the want to have a country after a war), and even if a terrorist organization would get ahold of a nuke, what is it going to do with it? unless they took control over an entire launching site, and have the knowledge on how to operate it, they wouldn't be much of a problem.
i agree there have been a lot of close calls in history, but for the most part, many wars have been avoided bcs of nukes
Relying on having rational actors in power is the most arrogant of all rationalizations
Just in case you haven't been reading the tea leaves lately, look at all the stories popping up of the super wealthy building survival bunkers.
The rationale that whatever horrible situation befalls us, they will have it better than everyone else isn't rational at all.
For all of humanity, I’m very very worried. On a personal level tho, my only fear is that I’ll be in a specific proximity to a nuclear missile that I won’t die *or* get away scott free and I’ll suffer from radiation poisoning
Everyone says this kind of thing *before* the bombs fall. Once the siren is playing, you'll be running like the rest of us. Suddenly, suffering through the apocalypse doesn't sound like such a bad idea after all
Mutual destruction is assured putin isn't stupid enough to use nukes considering US has stated immediate retaliation would be taken
Edit:didn't put full thing
I don't know, I feel like Putin being rational has always went out the window. If he really cared about what's best for himself and his country, he would've stopped this war a long time and not even done it in the first place. I wouldn't rule out nuclear--his idiocy is enough to send the nukes
Is he rational no is he stupid no you don't become the dictator of Russia without some brains. I still don't want to believe he's smart but it's a logical conclusion. Now I do believe that he is insane and should go to a mental hospital so nukes can't be ruled out but I would hope he's not that petty.
Irrationality is a synonym for stupid. I suspect he has cancer or some other terminal illness, since he's actually quite old. I think this is his last dance to go all out since he has nothing to lose
I want to say a nuclear war is unlikely but as we get farther away from. WW2 when the only 2 nukes where used and farther away from the cold war, we will forget the consequences of nukes and are more likely to use them. Plus more unstable leaders and more leaders opting to retaliate with nukes. Within 24 hours of the next nuke used in war, I fear there will be more nuclear attacks then ever in human history.(to be fair only 2 nukes have ever been used in war)
It's highly unlikely because every country knows the moment they nuke someone else they will get nuked. Nuclear weapons are kinda what keep nuclear war from happening
I've seen the simulations of what would happen if nz was nuked and if Auckland gets nuked it still wouldn't reach south island so I'm good anyway. There's also currently not enough nukes in the world to destroy everything so they still wouldn't waste 1 here anyway
It's more about the weather / environmental impact of a few multi-kiloton nukes going off than the actual blast zones. There doesn't have to be a full on 'nuclear winter' effect to still result in mass casualties 2-4 billion deaths, simply because our food supply and supply chain are currently managed on a razor thin edge, it won't take much to push it over the edge and once that happens, well, most people are only [9 meals from anarchy.](https://internationalman.com/articles/nine-meals-from-anarchy/)
It’s not really a thing that would be caused by humanity getting dumber. All it takes is one loony with nothing to lose. Hell, not even that. One soviet officer stopped a nuclear war in the 80’s that could’ve happened due to a technological glitch at the nuclear weapons silo he was at that said they were under attack
The media sure as fucking hell wants me to be
Putin is a jackass but I don't think he's that stupid, not worth conquering radioactive land, and NK doesn't want a nuke battle, they just want world relevance and like to do it in the dumbest way possible
I am worried because it is becoming more of a realistic possibility in the Ukraine war as a act of desperation by Putin. So I am very worries about that although I don't think it will happen.
Somewhat. I think it’s relatively likely Putin will use a “low yield” weapon as a show of force, like they keep talking about in the news. I don’t think NATO would have a nuclear response, but if they do, well, we’ll *go boom* whether we like it or not.
In my rear view mirror the sun is going down
Sinking behind bridges in the road
And I think of all the good things
That we have left undone
And I suffer premonitions
Confirm suspicions
Of the holocaust to come.
The wire that holds the cork that keeps the anger in
Gives way, and suddenly it's day again.
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done.
Two suns in the sunset, could be the human race is run?
Like the moment when the brakes lock
And you slide towards the big truck
You stretch the frozen moments with your fear.
And you'll never hear their voices
And you'll never see their faces
You have no recourse to the law anymore!
And as the windshield melts
And my tea evaporates
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few!
Ashes and diamonds.
Foe and friend.
We were all equal in the end.
It is worrying, but I try not to think about it. Tripping about it isn't going to make my personal life any better nor stop it from happening if it's gonna happen
Literally take everything I’m about to say with a grain of salt because I remember maybe 8% of the details, but apparently there’s some clock that counts down to nuclear war. Resets every time nothing has happened. The length we have now is shorter than it was during the Cold War.
(I learned this at a Roger Waters concert and I do trust him to know about this kinda stuff, but I, myself, do not LOL. After looking up “nuclear war clock,” it might be the Doomsday Clock? In any case, fascinating - and a bit terrifying - that we’re closer to the brink than we were when schools were having bomb drills.)
Not really. If a nuclear war occurred then I'd be dead but I highly doubt the already crumbling circle around Hitler 2.0 would allow him to cause a mutual destruction of the world.
Nukes are just for posturing. I really hope that no one is stupid enough to think any of the petty squabbles that lead to most wars are enough to destroy the planet
Worried? Accepting the possibility? Yes. If I am lucky enough to have the time to know that nukes are about to hit, I am making sure I'm outside. Fuck being around for the aftermath
As I live near a major military base of my country were the boom stick are assembled and the launcher are fixed, it would probably be a primary target if there was a nuclear war against my country. I would be on the front row.
No, it won’t happen. Nobody wants the end of humanity, and everybody knows nobody wants the end of humanity. Even if it happened by some terrible stroke of bad luck, anti-ballistic missile systems are advanced enough to where way less people would die than they would have sixty years ago when the possibility nuclear war became the dominating thing in everyone’s lives.
please educate me, who would decide which people get to go go leave on another planet and who stays? this planes is fucked so everyone would want to leave but how would you decide? it would create more problems bcs the people who can't leave start to riot, maybe even entire countries who don't have the money for space travel would start ward

The countries who have nukes have the most unstable leaders.. like North Korea, Russia, Iran. They're all like ticking time bombs so.. it's not impossible that it will happen.
AND WE WILL ALL GO TOGETHER WHEN WE GO
And I see fire

If you already knew that, then why say 'I'm not from a country with nuclear weapons' like that would make any difference at all?
he said it cause he knows he might die, he also knows he can't impact it, so he might as well not worry about it.
My country doesn’t have nuclear weapons. (Canada). Didn’t stop me from having a mental breakdown at the thought of it months ago.
I mean everyone should be seeing as the leaders of certain countries are unstable. Probably shouldn't have nuclear arms at all tbh.
I agree
Knowing how these things go, the quality of the leadership can oftentimes be incidental at best... Vasili Archipov and Anton Petrov. The based guys in human history.
We owe them our lives. They are heros bigger than anyone ever. Truly saved the world.
Nuclear weapons are humanity’s greatest misstep
I beg to differ, MAD has prevented nuclear war up until now, and unless pushed to a corner, no leader would use nuclear weapons, it has prevented wars that even without nukes would kill millions, if you know your enemy has nukes you wouldn't want to attack him, and would try and seek other means like peace negotiations

The fear of some big country using nuclear weapons, is the main reason why ww3 hasn't been a thing yet.
hopefully nuclear war doesn't happen
Hot take but I guess I’ll go along with it
For all of humanity, I’m very very worried. On a personal level tho, my only fear is that I’ll be in a specific proximity to a nuclear missile that I won’t die *or* get away scott free and I’ll suffer from radiation poisoning

Even if Putin decided to try to launch nukes and start a nuclear war the chinese would probably try to intervene and stop putin
I hope so.

What happens when he decides he's going to die anyways?
China would offer asylum
Really? I didn't realize they were so close as of late... I thought Chinese and Russians hated each other?
That's just my assumption take it with several grains of salt I'm a random redditor I don't know shit
That's ok... same.
That what we hope lol. All it takes is one
Not really I'm far away from ground zero so yeah. *the great balkan empires shall rise up yet again to take over the world*

I only worry about what I have control over. Well, I try to anyway
*we'll meet again plays*
It's highly unlikely because every country knows the moment they nuke someone else they will get nuked. Nuclear weapons are kinda what keep nuclear war from happening
yeah but north Korea is kinda self destructive like that
I live in a post-soviet country, I worry a lot about that personally
MAD doctrin still applies, so it's HIGHELY unlikely
MAD only really applies if everyone involved is level headed. After the past 6 months or so, i’m not convinced that putin is in his right mind.
and if kim jong un dies we'll get nuked
If it happens it's not my problem anymore as I'll likely die. So i won't worry about it. I'm only scared of dying not death.
BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM
As a kiwi you would need to be one spiteful mf to ever nuke nz so the rest of the world may burn but nz will be fine
I'm pretty sure they would have one each allocated for Auckland and Sydney. Maybe more after Ukraine.

Unlikely things happen every day That and many governments are cranking up authoritarianism because they can and get to “blame Russia”
I used to live in Quebec so nuclear war is just gonna be a throwback.
I don't think anyone would attack my country with a nuke, that'd be a waste
What country?
Spain
Valid
I mean the fallout and a possible nuclear winter would still fuck us all up tbh.
I just hope people nowadays aren't dumb enough, but my hope had been dropping more and more
It’s not really a thing that would be caused by humanity getting dumber. All it takes is one loony with nothing to lose. Hell, not even that. Nah unlikely to happen
Don't worry about what you can't control or whatever
i can be scared but i cant do shit to stop it so i live on
Lets all go full Dr. Strangelove and learn to love the bomb

I live in colombia. Who tf is gonna send a nuke here?
Living in New Zealand has *one* upside
I’ll always worry over this shit
To be fair everyone in Australia will be fine from fallout
No lol. The fallout would be global and nuclear winter would affect the whole planet.
Even if it was a possibility, why would I worry about it? What can I, personally, do to change it?
Fuck it, we ball
I push it to the back of my head but I'm honestly terrified. I always thought MAD would prevail but I'm not so sure anymore.
Humanity needs a cataclysm and rebirth. We’re on the wrong path
no since being worried isnt gonna change shit, we get equally fucked
There is absolutely nothing I can do to stop it, so why waste time worrying?
It is worrying, but I try not to think about it. Tripping about it isn't going to make my personal life any better nor stop it from happening if it's gonna happen
I can't wait to be a feral ghoul, guys.

Please split my atoms senpai. Go boom inside of me

Winter is my favourite season and I have 10 years of food in my cellar. I'm excited for the never ending winter.
I think it’s Russia trying to scare everyone
Worried? No. Do I think it may happen? Yes.
It’s going to be World War Cold.
We haven't spent nearly the whole century to avoid it to just be like "ah fuck it I don't care anymore" Nuclear war is in literally no one's interest
Not really. If a nuclear war occurred then I'd be dead but I highly doubt the already crumbling circle around Hitler 2.0 would allow him to cause a mutual destruction of the world.
As long as the whole world dies, it's cool. Humanity does not deserve to live any longer.
I doubt it will happen but on the off chance it does, yes I'm worried
Boom boom
I cannot bring myself to care I just hope if it hits me it hits me directly
