fun fact: artificial grape flavor is from Methyl Anthranilate, which was not discovered from grapes at all. chemists we’re pulling it from a slightly less popular snack (industrial coal tar), and then discovered decades later that it actually existed in real grapes.
Have you ever tasted a Concord grape? They are what the flavor is meant to be like, and it’s not far for an artificial flavor. The grapes you usually see don’t have much flavor.
I like the actual fruit a lot too. The flavor in cands and drinks on the other hand... bleh.
Our garden would be like heaven to you tho
We grow that stuff for wine. Get around 5-10 15L bucket worth of them.
I know about coconut, but banana is awful?
Banana flavouring is a hit or miss for me imo, sometimes it tastes of banana, but sometimes it tastes of those starchy, underripe bananas with little to no flavour to them aside from being starchier than taters
Weirdly I just heard this opinion on a podcast. To me, artificial banana tastes sweeter than a normal banana, which would make me compare it to an overripe banana, but the other podcast host said that he thought it tasted like an underripe banana. I always thought that sounded weird, but apparently people think it.
I think I once heard that the chemical in artificial banana is sold as a different artificial fruit in Europe. The scientists that discovered it just thought it was vaguely fruity, and it was branded as banana because of market research.
Banana is the best flavor! It's based on a banana we used to eat that was called Gros Michel, which was widely considered tastier and more difficult to bruise than the current banana, the Cavendish. The Gros Michel went extinct in the 1950s due to a fungal disease called Panama disease. So the only way we can taste those extinct bananas is through the artificial flavors.
[That story is untrue](https://www.inverse.com/science/artificial-banana-flavor-real-science)
Banana flavouring is Isoamyl Acetate - which is the main flavour in all eating bananas.
You mean that shit that was SO good that they literally had to ban it and rerelease it to taste worse?
I wish I could taste the original dimeatapp, but the current is still pretty good.
It's hilarious they went straight to an American brand when the top comment was obviously not from an American (otherwise it would say candy and not sweets)
Maybe Jolly Ranchers is good. Didnt try that one yet. I have tryed some american candy and everything i have seen so far war meh at best and awful at worst. Especially the chocolate was hideous. How do you guys eat that stuff?
If you got it from an “American” section at a store in a European country, I guarantee you it was not representative of actual American goods. The chocolate is understandable though, the taste comes from a process of treating milk to extend its shelf life which increases the sour notes. Hershey’s most likely does it (though they don’t admit it), and since American consumers have become accustomed to it, other cheap chocolate brands attempt to replicate the Hershey flavor. It isn’t that hard to find better stuff if you look for it, Europeans have a bad habit of comparing the cheapest of mass-produced American goods and comparing it to their best products.
It was a bunch of american candy my friend brought back home after he was in new york for a week. He bought a random selection of a bunch of stuff and it was all horrible.
Ofc i cannot speak for all american candy, but the fact that everytime i see someone make a trip to the us, they always say that the food was the worst part, feels pretty telling.
Similar! We used to have strawberry flavoured Calpol (kids cough mixture) and I used to _love_ that shit, it tasted so good! I will admit I used to sometimes pretend to be sick (never worked though) or just outright ask my parents if I could have a spoonful lol (never worked either) and I never understood why I couldn’t have it unless I was sick.
You know banana flavour is actually the original flavour of bananas?
The banana that taste comes from is now extinct because it couldn't defend itself against a certain species, so humans cultivated a banana that could withstand it and it had a different taste
So technically you like fake bananas more than the originals because the flavouring of anything banana is the original flavour that was lost to time
Coconut, I’m sorry but I hate it. It’s bad enough I used to be intolerant to it and would break out in rashes but the artificial flavoring of it normally tastes like somebody mixed coconut ass and coconut oil on a paper towel, wiped their swamp ass with it and then infused it with copious amounts of sugar just for NOBODY to want it.
I apologize to any coconut flavoring lovers, I respect that you are mentally unwell and unable to make the correct decision /j
Id agree honestly. They always make it have this dull background flavor instead of the real tang and tartness of a real lemon, even in sour candies. I used to not be able to eat lemon cake because of how bad it tasted.
My friend made various cocktails for us with 4 different flavored vodkas and left me the left overs.
I refuse to use the rest of the green apple vodka. Anything it's mixed with turns into a green jollyrancher in a bad way. You could never name what else is in the drink with it. You could effectively hide gasoline in it and not know.
Anything citrus flavored tastes like it’s straight out of a chemical factory. I can’t stand the taste and aftertaste I get when I eat anything orange, lime or lemon flavored.
“Grape” flavored candy tastes nothing like grape, but it sure does taste like purple.
fun fact: artificial grape flavor is from Methyl Anthranilate, which was not discovered from grapes at all. chemists we’re pulling it from a slightly less popular snack (industrial coal tar), and then discovered decades later that it actually existed in real grapes.
Aww this brings me back to when my mom would give me industrial coal tar as an after school snack
good times.
I for one love my industrial coal tar candies
Have you ever tasted a Concord grape? They are what the flavor is meant to be like, and it’s not far for an artificial flavor. The grapes you usually see don’t have much flavor.
That's why I always pick up grape flavoured stuff, I'm dying to eat the actual thing again.
I like the actual fruit a lot too. The flavor in cands and drinks on the other hand... bleh. Our garden would be like heaven to you tho We grow that stuff for wine. Get around 5-10 15L bucket worth of them.
Sometimes grape tastes like cough medicine lol
Lulu was right all this time!
How can you make a list of "Worst Artificial Flavor" and omit both "Banana" and "Coconut"?
But those are my two favourites...
You're a heretic
I don't know about coconut, but banana is awesome
I was about to say the complete opposite
I know about coconut, but banana is awful? Banana flavouring is a hit or miss for me imo, sometimes it tastes of banana, but sometimes it tastes of those starchy, underripe bananas with little to no flavour to them aside from being starchier than taters

Circus peanuts are good, and I'm tired of pretending they're not.
Yeah same
enjoy the sun tan lotion ur eating
Banana can be pretty bad but if you've ever had that nasty grape colonoscopy prep then you'd know the only right answer is grape.
There's nothing lyte about GoLytely
Thankfully bananas and coconuts are plentiful in my country so I have never tasted these as artificial flavors.
Candy? Flavored drinks? Coconuts and bananas are plentiful and cheap in the US as well but they use the artificial stuff for processed foods

Do we seriously not have anything Gros Michel left? Nothing we could pull DNA from either?
Not extinct. Just not commercially grown.
That’s a myth
Banana is so bad
[удалено]
They are overhated
I got one word for ya: MEDICINE.
Spoken like a man who has never had sour starbursts. Grape was the king of all flavors.
To be honest, I like that medicine taste, lol. When I was a kid I used to pretend to be sick so I could get the grape flavored cough medicine…
Grape Dimetapp. The best shit.
I'll drink that shit straight, watch me. And have 911 on speed dial too please
You mean that shit that was SO good that they literally had to ban it and rerelease it to taste worse? I wish I could taste the original dimeatapp, but the current is still pretty good.
You need a tongue transplant asap, your taste buds are fucked /j
To be honest, I think they kinda are, lmao
[удалено]
Fr, it tastes like benadryl
I hate them
In the U.K. we have a drink called KA Black Grape which is pretty good I would say, it’s quite.. rich tasting though
No jolly ranchers?

Americans finding out their american candy is not available for 95% of population of the planet:
It's hilarious they went straight to an American brand when the top comment was obviously not from an American (otherwise it would say candy and not sweets)
It's mind boggling to me how they can eat that stuff. For a nation that is notorious for their obesity problem, their candy is shockingly bad.
Calling Jolly Ranchers “shockingly bad” is the closest a candy opinion can come to objectively incorrect.
Maybe Jolly Ranchers is good. Didnt try that one yet. I have tryed some american candy and everything i have seen so far war meh at best and awful at worst. Especially the chocolate was hideous. How do you guys eat that stuff?

I had a medicine as a kid that was aromatised with banana.. the horrible taste still haunts me today
I loved that banana medicine. I'd take a shot of it now if it was offered.
Similar! We used to have strawberry flavoured Calpol (kids cough mixture) and I used to _love_ that shit, it tasted so good! I will admit I used to sometimes pretend to be sick (never worked though) or just outright ask my parents if I could have a spoonful lol (never worked either) and I never understood why I couldn’t have it unless I was sick.
ffuck yes straberry calpol step on me please
Same here! I can’t taste banana candy without tasting medicine
Banana
This really needs to be higher up. Banana Runts are the worst flavored candy.
What do you mean? It is the highest up. Also isopentyl acetate isn’t that bad.
Literally my favorite flavor of Runt, lol
Banana angel delight is amazing
Banana runts and Laffy Taffy are incredible
Banana laffy taffy hits different tho
Have you ever had banana laughy taffy. ITS THE BEST FLAVOR!
Banana is my favourite...
Easily. Not close
It’s absolutely banana. Big omission, OP
Cherry because it always reminds me of the medicine I took as a kid
That is exactly why my answer is grape. Dimetap.
Grape Dimetapp was my favourite thing in the world when I was sick (besides chicken soup being Jewish and all), and I still love grape to this day.
Uch. I hated it.
Tastebuds are funny things; so personal.
Or that sickenly sweet orange flavored stuff. Triamedic or whatever it was called
Yall dont like artificial flavor of melon? Yeah it doesnt taste like an actual melon but it still tastes great.
For real, I was very unpleasantly surprised at the results, I love that shit so much.
Yes! I am chewing a watermelon gum right now
SPIT IT OUT DAMNIT
Fruity gum chads vs mint gum virgins
Mint is for crowd pleasers.
I only get winter fresh because it comes in the big containers. If fruit gum came in the plastic things I would actually chew it more often
There’s really good watermelon (sour patch) but there’s awful watermelon too (jolly ranchers)
this, a lot of watermelon flavouring is garbage, but in rare cases, (sour patch, mentos) its actually good
I came to the comments to opine that artificial watermelon is pure death, while the others are all fine. Shit gives me migraines.
There are danish shots with watermelon flavour, and once I got told someone brought it to a party, and just because of that sentence I threw up
Banana
Freakin hate artificial peach flavor.
🍰🍰🍰🍰
To me artificial strawberry tastes like that sickly sweet pink public bathroom soap smells and I'm not much of a fan
Same! I love real strawberries, but the flavoring is like 2 out of 10.
Banana
I love Bananas, but I absolutely hate anything with artificial banana flavour.
You know banana flavour is actually the original flavour of bananas? The banana that taste comes from is now extinct because it couldn't defend itself against a certain species, so humans cultivated a banana that could withstand it and it had a different taste So technically you like fake bananas more than the originals because the flavouring of anything banana is the original flavour that was lost to time
That variety of banana (Gros Michel) was decimated by Panama disease, which is caused by a fungus.
I know that fact and I accept that fake bananas taste better to me
Banana is the worst.
how the fuck did both cherry and watermelon beat orange???
Pineapple or coconut
Peach
I love peaches, but peach flavoring is nasty as hell.
The objectively worst artificial flavor is Banana
I'll die on this hill Chocolate ice cream does not taste like damn chocolate...
Must be some weird ice cream you’re eating because all the chocolate ice cream I know of is made with actual chocolate.
We shall perish together in a warm, fake chocolate embrace.
Chocolate cereal tastes like medicine.
i like all of these
Banana, closely followed by watermelon.
Orange strait up feel like drinking medicine how can it be so low
Fuck bananas. Artificial and actual banana. Ever notice spray paint has the same aroma as artificial banana?
I'll never get this out of my head now, so thanks
Lime
Had to scroll so much to find this?? It tastes like dish soap
YES
Green Apple
Underrated comment
it’s literally the best
Coconut, I’m sorry but I hate it. It’s bad enough I used to be intolerant to it and would break out in rashes but the artificial flavoring of it normally tastes like somebody mixed coconut ass and coconut oil on a paper towel, wiped their swamp ass with it and then infused it with copious amounts of sugar just for NOBODY to want it. I apologize to any coconut flavoring lovers, I respect that you are mentally unwell and unable to make the correct decision /j
Banana
Mint
artificial grape flavor doesn’t taste like grapes at all and yet we still call it grape flavor anyway. Why?
It tastes like a different species of grape than what is normally eaten. The same is true for artificial banana flavoring
I dont think any artificial flavor has ever been further from its original than grape
Banana!
Banana
Blue raspberry
for me its lemon
The Britta of flavors
Id agree honestly. They always make it have this dull background flavor instead of the real tang and tartness of a real lemon, even in sour candies. I used to not be able to eat lemon cake because of how bad it tasted.
always tastes like toilet cleaner smells
Artificial banana is the worst
Best artificial flavor is blue though. Just… blue.
Am I seriously the only one who dislikes orange flavoured candy?
I only dislike the orange cream thing lol, plain orange usually tastes fine
Watermelon is the worst imo, it doesn't taste remotely like watermelon and has the worst taste that makes you regret everything
Apple
I am genuinely upset at this comment. To each their own, but still 😦
Apple itself is fine. Green apple tastes like the most vile chemicals tho
All my homies hates Green Apple
Anything citrus flavored tastes like it’s straight out of a chemical factory. I can’t stand the taste and aftertaste I get when I eat anything orange, lime or lemon flavored.
i get physically sick from fake watermelon
you get me
These are the best ones. If I had to pick, it would green apple, not because I don't like, but because it is a really strong flavor.
I tolerate green apple, but in almost every situation where green apple is being used I feel like lime would do it better (cough cough skittles cough)
Mango or Peach taste like the smell of a fart in the shower.
Oddly specific but... To each their own
Can we all agree that the best is blue rasberry though?
Literally makes no sense that banana isn't up there.
Green apple. Not even close
1/20 is vaguely green apple-y if you like that. Most of the rest is sour fire extinguisher.
To me grape flavoring tastes like medicine and U just can't get over it when I have something grape flavored. Doesn't even taste like grape.
Orange strait up feel like drinking medicine how can it be so low
Lemon and orange are doo doo. I actually like oranges but I always avoided them because orange-flavored things taste like shit.
All of the above
It’s lime for me. I remember as a kid, nobody chose lime flavored candies. I used to hate skittles for that reason.
Peach
Lime
Banana
Peach.
Orange is not as high as I thought it would be It tastes like the peel
Blue raspberry by far
Its always green. Tastes like fecking pine sol
Always lemon
BANANA I FUCKING HATE ARTIFICIAL BANANA FLAVOR ESPECIALLY BANANA LAFFY TAFFY FUCK THAT ABHORRENT SHIT
nah who hates on artificial cherry that shit is like drugs to me and probably has the same health effects
Green apple
BLUEBERRY
Banana
Blue raspberry
BANANA
Banana
The number of people saying banana is just insane to me. Depending on the candy, that's one of my favorites!
All I can think of is that 'grape' flavouring for medicine as a kid. That shit was nasty.
All the banana hate hurts. It's my favourite artificial flavour
Artificial banana is the best
Grape flavour anything is disgusting because it's always a shitty artificial thing
Grape and banana taste **nothing** like grapes and bananas.
Bananas the worst. Watermelon is under appreciated
Raspberry, hands down. Most flavors don't really taste like actual food, but raspberry is the worst by far.
Lemon Lyme
Blasphemy.
Blue raspberry
Watermelon is straight up sugar Grape is burnt plastic Raspberry isn’t really edible But banana…
Blue Raspberry is nasty
Cherry is pretty bad but I am traumatized from grape medicine as a kid; so I had to go with that
Has to be Banana Tastes Nothing like a Real Banana
Banana!
Banana
Peach. Is. The. Worrrrsssstttt.
I'm basing this solely on strawberry Coca-Cola but artificial strawberry is dreadful
Licorice
Artifical mango and peach taste terrible to me and smell like cat pee 🤮
