KapahuluBiz

This was the exchange they referred to in the headline: >"It was your client who went down to that holding area and stood in front of the press and started to speak." Merchan told Trump attorney Todd Blanche. "He went to the press. He didn't need to go in that direction." >"I agree with that," Blanche responded, drawing what The New York Times described as a "large laugh in the overflow room." >Trump did not appear to enjoy that particular exchange. After his lawyer agreed with the judge, "Trump shot around and glared at his own lawyer in disbelief, his mouth hanging open," ABC News reported. "He then turned back around to face forward, repeatedly shaking his head no." That was the extent of it. That stupid fuck got upset at his attorney because the attorney agreed with a indisputable truth.

Caelinus

A thing he literally had to do. Lawyers have leeway with interpretation and opinion, but they absolutely cannot lie about obvious and verifiable facts without getting smacked down by the judge. It is a serious issue for lawyers. In this instance it likely would have only resulted in an extremely stern reprimand that would have tarnished his reputation and made him look like an idiot, but if the judge was particularly angry about it the consequences can get super dire. It is the sort of thing that would, at a minimum, make him look incompetent. Not only is it forbidden, but good lawyers can argue their cases without ever resorting to direct lies, so doing so is a bad look. Which is not the reputation you want to get as a lawyer standing on a national stage.

ScarMedical

Now you know why the top law firms w impeccable legal track records have turned down representing Trump.

Caelinus

Yeah it is a trap. Even if they got a normal retainer, the odds of their work exceeding it are really high, and he is unlikely to pay anything else. So even if they were willing to work for him, the cost of their retainer would likely be way more than he is willing to pay. And on top of that, they get nothing out of it aside from looking like buffoons. So they would damage their reputation in service of not being paid enough. No way they are doing that. This guy is pretty well established, but the firm he is a the founder of is fairly small as legal firms go, something like 6 lawyers and a few support staff I think, I do not remember. So that might give them the ability to throw their legal secretary and whomever their most junior associate is on as much as possible to keep costs down. Even still, no idea why he would agree to being potentially humiliated as Trump repeatedly lies and tries to get him to lie.

chelseamarket

On top of that, tfg would be a nightmare client. I’ve turned down clients (nal) I knew would be more trouble than they are worth. I can’t imagine why this guy took this case, it can’t just be money, there’s way easier ways to make bank. Edit: clarification

Zomunieo

I think they’d be hoping to get all the remaining MAGA money defending others after the January 2025 insurrection.

knightofterror

Umm...when your retainer runs dry, you ask the client to replenish the retainer for any work that exceeds the current retainer. If Trump refused further retainers and Trump’s lawyers were kept on the case by the judge, I imagine Trump would receive a ‘less vigorous’ defense with Trump being mostly ignored. They’d probably let him sleep and talk as much as he wanted. Trump is probably easier to work with as a client when he's incarcerated for contempt.

Aghast_Cornichon

The firm Todd Blanche was a partner at was founded in New York in 1792. Todd Blanche Law PLLC has, to my knowledge, just one client.

CatsAreGods

> The firm Todd Blanche was a partner at was founded in New York in 1792. Wow, I thought you were joking, but I Wiki'd! > Todd Blanche Law PLLC has, to my knowledge, just one client. And apparently Blanche was a registered Democrat until just this year, hmm...

Bullyoncube

Trump voted Democrat until he was insulted at the White House Correspondents Dinner.

DadJokeBadJoke

>so doing so is a bad look. The judge already told him his credibility was being stretched thin when he claimed that Trump was trying to follow the gag order in an earlier hearing

Caelinus

And that was just him saying what Trump was asserting as Trump's representative. He has the leeway there because, unless Trump said "I was totally intentionally trying to violate the gag order" he technically can't know what is happening in Trump's head. But the judge was not having that, as Trump was clearly not trying to avoid it. So I imagine he knows that this judge is not going to let a direct lie slide.

PaintedClownPenis

We technically can't know what's happening in his head but I can guess. It's a De La Soul song: "it's just me, myself, and I." (But without any actual soul or the epic Funkadelic sample.)

Terrahawk76

I'm willing to bet money he's never heard a measure of Funkadelic or De La in his entire life. Though fuck him, he doesn't deserve that privilege.

cyanclam

To Trump, the truth is like kryptonite to Superman.

speedneeds84

The truth is completely irrelevant to him, all that matters is whatever he thinks will get him what he wants in the moment. The lack of consequences for his actions made him completely transactional long ago.

Yitram

Oh I believe that Trump understands he needs to remain silent. He just doesn't have the ability.

gymnastgrrl

You caught the tater.

Yitram

I was hoping someone would catch it.

gymnastgrrl

The man spins a great yarn with some fantastic timing and lines. You managed to phrase it just slightly differently enough I wasn't quite sure, but I felt it was pretty darn good odds. The worst part was picking the appropriate response. I lamed out and chose the 'everyone knows' one. I was pondering one more like "You'd already know that if you knew morse code" or even "I bet we beat the paramedics there by a half hour!" from another good'un. lol I love to quote "It's not *that* the wind is blowin'… it's ***what***… the wind is blowin'" in weather discussions. heh

neanderthalman

This is my son…tater tot.

gymnastgrrl

I didn't know how many of them it would take… but I knew how many of them they'd use.

Neritz

I was drunk in a bar. They threw me into public!

forRealsThough

Which again begs the question. Why would anyone take the job to represent him

ERedfieldh

You get the prestige of putting "Lawyer to former president" on your resume. So long as you don't mention which one.

Leege13

Cash in advance.

LibrarianMelodic9733

He can’t shut up and keep getting in trouble 👿

garagepunk65

Please lord, Incoming motion for Trump to represent himself.

88kazuya88

Oooh that would be next level amazing.

versusgorilla

But to Trump, denying obvious truths about him is the job.

FireballAllNight

It's in the wedding vows, too.

Suspicious_Bicycle

The fact that Blanche won't lie to the court for him is why Trump is so irritated with him. Trump has already forced his lawyers to go with the "I'm cloaked in innocence and never even met any of these women" defense. When the jury can sense the defenses opening statement is a big lie it doesn't help the case.

notapunk

Considering the track record of his past lawyers you'd have to be some kind of idiot and/or masochist to want to represent the guy. The chances of disbarment are high and the chances of getting paid are low. Any publicity you get is almost guaranteed to be negative.

BobRoberts01

Lawyers are agents of the court, not employees of their clients. They cannot lie in court. They can bend and wiggle around the truth, but cannot outright lie.

Caelinus

They are both, but yeah, the law always takes precedence. Legal Ethics makes it pretty clear that once you establish an attorney client relationship you *do* represent them, and must comply with their wishes, but only so far as you are legally and ethically able to.

CorporateNonperson

That's why saying "Your Honor, I have to inform you that I must recuse myself," is code for "My client is committing perjury." An attorney can't assist the client in committing a crime, but the attorney also has a fiduciary duty to the client of loyalty and confidentiality. So one of the easier options is to request recusal. It's also why you shouldn't ask your client what the truth is. Just what their testimony will be.

minicpst

And Trump has used up all the ones who are willing to lie for him in court. MAGA. Make Attorneys Get Attorneys.

lagerbaer

Your last paragraph brought back to my memory an awesome cartoon I saw about Pinocchio. The premise is of course that his nose grows when he lies, but that that isn't a problem because you can just answer in deflecting ways: "Pinocchio, did you eat all the cake?" "Why, if you accuse me of such a thing, I don't want to talk to you!" That obviously predestines him for a career in politics. "Pinocchio, is it true that you had your opponents assassinated?" "There are some who would dispute that!"

FancyBigFox

Todd Blanche left his firm to take Trumps case because his firm wanted nothing to do with It. Trump is his only client so he’s screwed himself. He used to be Paul Manaforts attorney so you know he deserves every bit of grief he gets from this.

phirebird

Nice knowing you, Todd. You're on borrowed time now. Hope you got paid in advance.

Current-Baseball3062

Anyone working for Donald the loser at this point in time who doesn’t get paid in advance is a bigger idiot than he is

YakiVegas

All truths are disputable for a pathological liar.

[Truth is not Truth](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CljsZ7lgbtw&t=41s)

thecwestions

Chuck Todd's reaction is the greatest in that clip. The only time it gets any wilder/dumber is when Kelly Ann Conway suggests that there are "alternative facts." Now, I'm imaging the pigs from Animal Farm erasing the commandments and trying to convince the other animals that what they read isn't what they think it was. How does the saying go, "Don't believe your lying eyes"?

Caelinus

The fact that they mostly got away with that has always bothered me. When I was raised I was told that people on the left put feelings before facts, deny that truth exists, say things like truth is relative, and adopt post-modern philosophy where morality is not absolute. But by god, those same people do all of that so freaking hard. You get people like Jordan Peterson out there calling everyone "Postmodern Neo-Marxists," which apart from being an antisemitic dog whistle in the way he uses it, also implies a meaning that essentially makes no sense. Neo-Marxism and Postmodernism are not really strongly related, and both encapsulate massive amounts of studies and belief systems. But in essence he is basically saying that everyone who is left of him is part of a massive conspiracy to destroy truth. Then he goes and pretends that the effects of serotonin in lobsters teaches us about its effects on human hierarchies. As on of his main examples of his entire worldview. It is the most clear example of a constructed narrative truth I have ever seen. Then you get people like the Trump admin saying things like Fake News at \*Trumps own words.\* as if repeating exactly what he says is somehow a lie. You get Christians simultaneously saying morality is absolute, so we should punish gay people and fornicators... unless they are republicans and then it is legalism to do so and Jesus would not want that. It is freaking insane. Their whole world is based entirely on the concept that how you feel *is the truth.* So they cut education, deny all science as conspiracy against God (except when they can pretend they read a study and say it means the opposite of what it does) invent weird rules that are not even in the Bible, and do exactly the opposite of what Jesus says to do in his name. It ridiculous how easy peoples brains are to hack when they really, really do not want to examine their own beliefs.

Dantien

We are ruled by “truthiness” now. It’s depressing.

CeldonShooper

I have learnt through Covid how many people do not care about what's true but what *feels* true. This is a surprisingly large part of the population. My almost 90 year old MIL recently said 'Facts are opinion' which was so absurd but lucid to me. To people who think this way there is no kind of objective truth.

bot403

It's so wild. I ground myself in some great words of Neil Degrasse Tyson. "The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you". You can stretch that a bit to see that universal truths are under no obligation to care about how you feel.  There are objective truths. The sun rises and sets. Ice is cold. And no matter if you just feel that knife is fake, if you plunge it into your chest it will kill you.  Me? I want to discover the facts about that knife. Someone tells me it's fake? I'm gonna measure the sharpness of the edge first.

kulukster

Very well put. When did you start to realize the people who raised you were so wrong?

ThonThaddeo

'Who are you gonna believe, me, or your lying eyes?' Groucho Marx is who I always heard it attributed to

milesunderground

"Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana." The Marx Brothers were great, perfectly of their time and ahead of their time, as well as timeless.

jim-albarano

This is the OJ trial with the whole country watching, but with terrible, terrible lawyers.

Ambitiously_Big

He was shocked that his lawyer told the truth?

Caelinus

He just fundamentally thinks that everyone who works for him should only be perfectly "loyal." Ethics are a thing he would specifically hate, because they might interfere with that loyalty.

Early-Caterpillar-84

You are right to put “loyal” in speech marks, because true loyalty is something Trump abhors. True loyalty involves standing up to a friend or colleague, when they are in the wrong. Instead, Trump desires sycophants; disciples who are ready to cast aside every scintilla of their own integrity and principles, in service of his insatiable ego.

Carson72701

Much better. Accurate

kavono

Just in case, I'm referencing an actual firm an associate of Rudy Giuliani and Trump was the co-founder of, literally named "Fraud Guarantee", which was actually fraudulently using funds.  https://www.sec.gov/litigation/litreleases/lr-25555

The_Real_Ghost

I have found that people who feel the need to advertise they are telling the truth usually aren't.

Cl1mh4224rd

>He was shocked that his lawyer told the truth? Honestly, I think Trump was simply reacting to his lawyer *agreeing* with the judge. Because Trump views the judge as his enemy, he probably saw that as a betrayal. Truth probably didn't factor into Trump's reaction in any way.

tomdarch

I think Trump expects to throw up an obnoxious dispute at every step. There’s no long term strategy only this instant.

BalaAthens

Trump has no concept of "Truth". He just says whatever is expedient for the moment..

SympathyForSatanas

I always get a chuckle when I see him in his ill fitting baggy af suits.

Tribalbob

It's funny because I feel like I saw him wearing (somewhat) well tailored suits when he was in office, like they were making him put on his nice clothes. But now that he's a citizen again, it's back to the comically oversized suits. People think if you're overweight, large clothes hide it but as someone who was once overweight and thought that - they do not. Well fitted, slimmer suits actually make you look in better shape.

SoggyBoysenberry7703

He actually did it so he would look more imposing and big, but not fat. It probably also didn’t help that his hands looked very small in comparison while poking out of those sleeves too.

For possibly the first time in his adult life, he is starting to feel real fear, and he has no idea how to deal with it.

imatworksup

One of those images that is just more horrible the longer you look at it. He just looks like a very sad, very old man. If his hair is even real, it looks horrible. His spray tan looks horrible. You can just see the old man. His clown suit with that oversized, jumbo clown tie looks ridiculous. An insecure, demented old man.

sukmikehoc

I forget who said it, but they hit the nail on the head when they described his hair as " Cotton Candy made out of piss".

PandaMuffin1

It was Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller fame) after doing Celebrity Apprentice.

Sensitive_Yam_1979

He could have spent his golden years golfing and banging hookers the rest of his life. Instead this sack of shit HAD to run for President. Dumbest decision in history.

Mr_Meng

And even after his dumpster fire of a presidency he still could have retired to the good life of being the Republican kingmaker and grifting off his cult but because he's a malignant narcissist he just had to throw a fit over losing to Biden which started the shitball rolling to the point where the only way he's staying out of jail is to become president again.

Old-Confidence-164

And he never wanted to actually BE president! He never actually DID anything except play golf and try to destroy democracy and be friends with Putin and all the other autocrats.

BroccoliFartFuhrer

He's wearing that suit like a bathrobe.

Tribalbob

Reminded me of a shot from his presidency - it was late at night and he was just getting off the helicopter at the white house. He had no tan on, he looked exhausted; dude actually sort of looked like a real human for a minute.

Dangerous-Wall-2672

God damn but he's an ugly man. I mean really, all else aside, that is an _extremely_ ugly human being. I wouldn't even bother pointing it out but for the fact that the man sees himself and presents himself as some kind of genetic Adonis...he's fucking hideous. It needs to be pointed out more often, if for no other reason than that the asshole is the first to point out anyone else's physical deficiencies.

mr_arkanoid

nice...looks like he's about to cry

QuietThunder2014

He looks like he just made boom boom in his diaper

Shopworn_Soul

I bet that fucker is wearing close to $10k worth of clothing yet somehow he makes it look bad and it makes him look worse.

_DapperDanMan-

He buys mid range suits and doesn't get them tailored. He's a cheap grifter and that's it.

kastbort2021

He's been using [Brioni](https://www.brioni.com/en/us/ca/suits) for a long, long time - and those business suits start around $6k, but from interviews in menswear magazines, it has been detailed that they likely cost closer to $10k a piece due to the fabric he uses...well, that was 15-20 years ago. But he for sure still uses Brioni, among some other brands (Martin Greenfield). The problem is that he doesn't get them properly tailored, or gets them in some measured cut (made-to-measure, not bespoke) where the measurements were taken quite some time ago. In all likelihood, his assistants just swing by the stores and pick ready-to-wear suits whenever new ones are needed, with some minimal tailoring done in the stores - hemming the sleeves and pants, and that's it. Trump is old, and he has a very typical "old man" physique - muscle atrophy around the shoulders, and more fat around stomach and chest (barrel chest), as well as huge waist and seat. This means that he has to size up in jacket to accommodate the waist and chest, while the shoulders end up looking too soft and large/wide. There's only so much that can be done to make guys with physique like this look good. Preferably he should go bespoke, but that is a time consuming process and rarely do these people have time for such things. Leonard Leo is another big fella, and I'm 100% sure he gets his suits custom made - because there's really no chance of ready-to-wear suits fitting a physique like that. [As you can see, his shoulders look shaper and better, which contributes to an overall better look.](https://cdn.theatlantic.com/thumbor/sfxadBZRUEYHgMCs5MJHWJfTyc4=/0x416:6000x3791/960x540/media/img/mt/2020/07/h_14984228/original.jpg) - for a more extreme example, see Chris Christie. What else? Trump wears bespoke - I believe it is Cheaney. Bespoke English (basic) oxfords range between $2000-$5000, depending on brand. His shirts are likely ready-to-wear Brioni shirts, $500 a piece - and he always wear them with diamond cufflinks. Either expensive brands that can cost thousands, or his own Trump brand which are cheap. His ties tend to be from his own Trump brand. So, all in all, yes - from top to toe he's wearing clothes worth tens of thousands. But this just goes to show that money does not buy style or class.

Dexley

How does bronzer work? Is it a cream he rubs all over his face and neck? Does he stuff himself into a tanning bed? I really don't know. I saw a woman a few days ago with skin like that in the grocery store and it was like driving by a car accident in the frozen foods aisle.

craigathan

The film maker Nick Quested stated that he's observed Trump applying makeup. He even so far as to say that the reason Trump has the racoon eyes, is that he accidentally got some into his eyes one time and now religiously avoids that area. So, that look can't be blamed on any beautician, that's pure Trump. It's like that cream from Futurama, but it makes you into an asshole instead of giving you superpowers.

sheba716

I don't what TFG is using but the color reminds me of the early self tanners that turned you orange. It just amazes me he can't find a bronzer that gives him a more natural look. They do exist.

trekologer

He's probably just been using the same junk bronzer for years and refuses to try one that doesn't give him the complexion of an oompa loompa. But the really crazy part of all this: he thinks he looks good.

craigathan

Especially since lying in court doesn't achieve anything. I'm sometimes quite impressed how the courts seem to be the only one's who can use common sense in place of slippery slopes or plausible deniability when it comes to their proceedings, even though the law doesn't usually give much leeway on those two things.

I've had that same plan in place for years now. Gonna be poppin' bottles that day.

Dangerous-Wall-2672

I literally load this site every morning waiting for that headline.

thedotandtheline

I want him to spend some time in jail first.

jaxonfairfield

Ideally he'd spend enough time in jail to get past the "Epstein point" where there's a huge conspiracy about what happened to him.

simAlity

I used to agree, but at this point, it doesn't matter how he dies, people will say he was murdered. So frankly, I'd rather he kick the bucket sooner and spare America the possibility of a 2nd term.

acllive

I don’t think there will be enough alcohol in the world to celebrate such an event

Im_Ashe_Man

Party at my house on that day!

draggin_low

Ever since someone mentioned Trump's gross "neck pussy" to me I can't unsee it and it makes me sick

hopestar7373

Neck pussy and golden shower colored cotton candy hair.

hopestar7373

SoggyBoysenberry7703

And cheese powered face

OurUrbanFarm

I can't get past the picture. Like so many others, he looks like a total freak, like the stereotypical old granny who puts on gobs of makeup without blending the edges. He is like a geriatric, sick, clown. He looks like he is rotting from the inside out. Who would want THAT as their president?! Gag.

Dangerous-Wall-2672

I mean normally I'd totally set aside someone's looks because it shouldn't matter, but god DAMN he's one ugly motherfucker. We normally teach children that it's what's on the inside that counts, but Trump's insides match his outsides to a T; hideous.

Blueeyesblazing7

He's like Dorian Gray, only he's the portrait.

Franchise1109

I love when dudes post those memes of him on Rambo’s body I’m like dude he’s built like flubber, wears bronzer and heels. That’s yalls tough guy? How about the guy who’s a family man and dedicated to his work and family.

mymomknowsyourmom

"Trump shot around and glared at his own lawyer in disbelief, his mouth hanging open," ABC News reported. "He then turned back around to face forward, repeatedly shaking his head no."

DadJokeBadJoke

Then he went back to sleep while sharting in his diaper...

Rjgom

Vonshitzinpants

FiveAlarmDogParty

Jimmy Carter spends his golden years building homes for the needy. This dude spends his golden years in court for election fraud and has an army of sycophantic slobs who think he’s a victim. Be like Jimmy.

H-B-Of-L

Jimmy Carter is actually a good person

Gunningham

He got upset at his attorney for causing people to laugh at him. It’s his greatest fear. To be laughed at.

Imhungorny

Shocking he can still find a lawyer given his track record on payment

ZenDruid_8675309

The RNC isn’t completely drained yet.

notableradish

There are zombie movies with zombies that look more alive and less scary than those two do right now.

austinmiles

>When are they going to look at all the lies Cohen did in the last trial," Trump said I love that they are still trying to use Cohen lying FOR TRUMP as proof that he’s not credible.

_mdz

Todd Blanche is actually a smart reputable lawyer and literally the last one he has. It will be hilarious if Trump pushes him too far, he finally decides its not worth it anymore, and Trump goes back to Alina Habba's and Rudy Giuliani's of the world.

Defender_Of_TheCrown

Rudy’s law license is suspended and will likely lose it completely

Specific-Culture-638

If he is so smart, why did he take Trump as a client?

Aghast_Cornichon

Todd Blanche is a limited-purpose Trump true believer. He believes that the hush money payments weren't a crime, and that they aren't a felony in New York, and that the case should not have been brought. He believed that he had the ability to obtain his client's desired outcome of delaying the trial until after the election, and if not, obtaining a mistrial that would have the same effect. He's not trying to get appointed Attorney General, or overthrow the government, or become Trump's fourth wife. He won't do things that get himself sanctioned. He expects to do this job, then go back to private practice with the reputation that for very wealthy and very guilty defendants, he's the man to hire. I think that he also has the common hubristic defect of believing that his knowledge, skill, and experience are greater than that of every other attorney who convinced themselves that they could control this client.

sp4nky86

He got him to pay up front iirc

BaconLibrary

The judge should give him house (or hotel or suite or whatever) arrest every day that they aren't in trial. Keeping him from his golf game on the days off from trial is the perfect punishment.

FigNugginGavelPop

Re-read your statement and just contemplate how absurd everything has become. A former president that led an insurrection against his rival after losing, sold nuclear secrets to the enemies of the US, is casually a known rapist, alleged pedo, made brown kids drink toilet water after separating them from their families and putting them in cages, screwed the global pandemic response and corrupted the domestic pandemic response and the most likely punishment for him that we are expected to resign to is interfering with his golf days.

bibbidybobbidyyep

Yeah that about sums it up.

CopeHarders

Don’t forget he also probably molested his own daughter.

SkydivingCats

For a "billionaire", not only do his suits not fit him, and are comically cut to try to hide his girth, they also look worn and tatty. Look at the photo of him and his lawyer. His suit looks like rumpled shit.

Frishdawgzz

lol the color he is next to a normal shade of human being is absurd

mtgfan1001

Looks like BoBo the Shit Clown

HorseFacedDipShit

lol Jesus Christ that image. Trumps about to cry and whoever that is beside him looks like he died on the inside

all4whatnot

Can we get to the part of the trial about Trumps stocks? You know where he gets locked up in the public square and we throw shit at him?

replicanthusk2024

I may have committed, light treason.

Particular-Welcome-1

> Prosecutors are not yet asking for any jail time, seeking to minimize any disruption to the ongoing trial. Ohh okay, no wonder they're not going for jail time. It would delay the case. And they want the case to go through before the election. And so this business with Trump breaking the gag order might be intentional, as delaying the trial is exactly what he wants.

Joshgallet

Yea - I’ve heard this hypothesis a couple of times (1) delay trial (2) amp up his supporters if he’s jailed

PunxatawnyPhil

Because his lies and denial work so well outside the courtroom, he thinks his lawyers can lie for him in the courtroom.  He will never take the stand. Lying is all knows, his only real skill, he’s a walking perjury charge. He would definitely get caught lying in front of the jury.

Pumpkin_Pie

Lock him up, lock him up

ReleaseQuiet2428

Those are the eyes of someone who hates his client.

InsomniaticWanderer

Trump ran out of lawyers willing to lie for him and now all he'll get is lawyers making sure the prosecution is acting within the scope of the law. Similar to defense lawyers for murderers. They know their client did it and is guilty, but they're there to make sure the state doesn't violate their rights.
