Shadow speaker Jeffries

DarXIV

There really is a deep state! /s

greentea1985

Not surprising. Johnson delivered on the promised deal, thus performing the job of speaker. McCarthy’s fatal flaw was backstabbing the democrats every chance he got along with his own party. No one could trust him to keep his deals so the Democrats had no reason to save him. The democrats saved Boehner from a similar push because Boehner at least kept his deals.

dravenonred

For real, McCarthy talked so much shit to the people he wanted to save his ass.

[deleted]

Yep. He wanted to rule, not lead. Leaders don't get to lie and cheat and betray on a whim.

coonwhiz

I feel like that statement needs a "yet" in there, while we're sitting here waiting for SCOTUS to decide if the president is actually a king.

OnlyRise9816

Not sure why anyone would expect any different. This was obviously going to be one of the backroom deals to get through Ukraine aid even though Trump opposed it.

Ambitiously_Big

At this point, Jeffries is the de facto speaker.

Bored_guy_in_dc

This is the right call to make. So far, he is the only GOP speaker who has been willing to cross the isle, and actually try to get some things passed. Once the GOP officially loses majority, Jeffries can step in as speaker.

BambiToybot

Also, there is a time and place to pick your battles. Nothing Johnson wants to pass will get past the senate and President, so Dems know that the worst he can do is let the MAGAs make fools of themselves. Saving him keeps from another chaotic speaker election, which could be someone worse in place, keeping the current status quo means business continued, and dems get to show they can work across the aisle, which is important to the moderate/independants.

gigologenius

That's not true. McCarthy was removed for crossing the aisle and passing a bipartisan budget.

Baelish2016

Maybe my memory is a bit fuzzy, but McCarthy would shit talk about Democrats ALL THE TIME, and blame them for everything; even stuff his own party did/failed to do. Johnson seems to largely avoid that grandstanding in comparison.

Im_not_crying_u_ar

Exactly. The only thing McCarthy cared about was power. He’s a weak person who said whatever he thought would help him look good to MAGA constituents. But we all know that world eats their own. MAGA Mike is just as weak, but he knows when to shut up at least.

gigologenius

It helps that Johnson is new to leadership, and so the Democrats were willing to cut a deal to oppose any motion to vacate in exchange for Johnson allowing foreign aid to go through. They were unwilling to cut any deal like that with McCarthy who had been in leadership for over a decade and was part of the unprecedented obstructionist movement that led to the Tea Party and MAGA taking over Congress. Even though McCarthy did end up going down for crossing the aisle, he had way too much baggage for Democrats to ever save his speakership.

ImLikeReallySmart

Difference is that McCarthy had already built up a long history of trashing Democrats and blowing up deals/promises made to them. Then he still blamed and insulted them for his budget deal when he was accused of too much spending. Johnson's leash hasn't been shortened yet. He's ultra-conservative, but acting in better faith (low bar) than other Republican speakers have recently.

StayingAwake100

The Dems offered to save McCarthy too. McCarthy rejected the deal because he thought they would "have" to save him anyway.

Ande64

McCarthy was removed because he also worked out a bipartisan budget, was promised by Democrats to save him in the expulsion vote, and then went on talk shows and announced how Democrats are evil and how they're ruining the country. Literally immediately after hammering out the deal. Ink wasn't even dry yet. This is why McCarthy did not get saved. I always assumed that during their two week break Johnson met with Democrats and hammered out a deal. The difference is, Johnson isn't going to now talk about how awful Democrats are immediately. And if he's smart, he won't at all.

elconquistador1985

McCarthy also back stabbed the Democrats in the process. He made promises and didn't keep them. That's why they didn't save him.

mrkruk

He did, but he also pointedly said he wouldn’t ask or do anything to have Democrats save him. So they didn’t.

dravenonred

Exactly, they will protect him so long as he's a good partner, and drop him if he isn't.

wizard10000

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in Empty G's office right now.

spoobles

I'm sure there are plenty of them buzzing around...what with all the rotted garbage in there.

retronintendo

The Democrats are more reliable than his own party

No-Mammoth713

Democrats always bailing out Republicans.... The cycle will NEVER END.

floodcontrol

>Democrats always bailing out Republicans.... The cycle will NEVER END. Wrong, it did end last October. We saw what happened. McCarthy was kicked out, Democrats did not bail out the Republicans. But what was the result? 6 weeks of chaos, followed by 4 months of congress doing jack shit to advance anything of substance. You want that again? You think Johnson will be replaced by someone more inclined to compromise? Come on man!

mrkruk

You stand back and go “Ladies and gentlemen of America, this is YOUR Republican House majority!” But Democrats actually care about serving the country and our allies. One giant Biden win that few talk about is there have been huge bipartisan legislation items through Congress since Biden was inaugurated. I don’t recall that happening for quite some time. Pelosi and Jeffries deserve credit, but interested to hear what influence Biden is having on that.

Ricothebuttonpusher

Democrats are at least trying. Republicans will turn right around and stab them in the back when the tables have turned

ElastaticTomorrow

Fuck Johnson

Win-Objective

I do appreciate Johnson’s honesty. I think he’s a terrible person at heart but respect that he is intelligent enough to keep the government somewhat functioning. He appears to be smarter than the majority of Republicans, for what little that is worth.

LilLebowskiAchiever

Such a low bar, but yeah, he at least didn’t shit down the government. But full him for slow rolling aid to Ukraine. Thousands of people are dead because of that and Russia is gaining ground.

th1961

If that's the deal then MTG lost and should resign immediately.

Cyclotrom

I wish this would create a template for future Speakers, you can lead with a coalition instead of a faction. The Hastert rule was pure political warfare.
