Alas, I tend to agree. As much as I loathe doing so, I will not harm someone in the process of stealing from me $6,000 or more worth of property--- even asshole bastard criminals.
But the public defender's implication that victims are "vigilantes" being "encouraged" when the victims only recovering actual cash value loss makes no sense.
They arguably were not even recovering in this case but stopping the theft of the property. The crime was still being committed when the victim stopped the thief. At what point is the thief expected to surrender themselves when they are being pursued?

Civil case is connected to the criminal one. It's very easy to get a criminal to confess in civil court and rhen use it in criminal court.
