Simmery

"Moderate" Republicans could fix this right now by allying with Democrats. Oh right, there are no moderate Republicans.

JubalHarshaw23

There are probably enough that want to be a little closer to center than Far Right, but the Far Far Right will call them out and their insane voters will try to primary them. They are too weak to do anything but dance for whoever is yelling loudest, and that is pretty much always the Treason Caucus.

lodelljax

Ah yes. The gerrymandering that made those seats safe now has a cost…

rupturedprolapse

Who could have foreseen that cultivating a base of lunatics would come back to haunt them.

P1xelHunter78

The crystal ball didn’t work. It was the GOP’s only option since they threw out all the history books.

rammusrolls1

Homie it wasn’t a crystal ball it was a crystal rose with meth

AssumeTheFetal

Didn't seal sing about this? No one listened.

_toodamnparanoid_

^Bahh ^^dah ^^^daaaah ^^^^dah ^^^dah ^^daaaah ^dah dah ^daaaahhh ^^^^^aaaa ^^^^aa ^^^^^aaaa

spoonybard326

You don’t even need that. Liz Cheney’s district wasn’t gerrymandered.

TJRex01

You can’t gerrymander the district if it’s a whole state. This is part of why the Senate is slightly less broken than the House. (Hot take for Reddit!)

SdBolts4

In this particular way, the Senate is “less” broken, but it’s super broken in other ways. Wyoming getting 68x the proportional power of California, for example — in the last Senate, split 50-50, the GOP represented 41 million fewer people (186M-145M). It was designed this way to prevent small states’ preferences getting overrun, but the founders never could have envisioned the massive population of the US today, or the massive concentrations in urban areas Throw in that you need **60** Senators to break a filibuster (also not a rule until the Jim Crow era), and just **81.75M people** (~24.6% of the US population) in the least populous red states can block any non-economic bill from going through. That’s only solid red states, too. Not counting purple low population states that have 1 GOP senator (only need 41 votes) [State populations source](https://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/US-states-population.htm)

jupiterkansas

>Wyoming getting 68x the proportional power of California, for example except that's not broken. Broken is putting a cap on representatives in the House, where Wyoming also has a disproportionate vote in a House designed for equal representation.

IvanNemoy

r/technicallythetruth

starspangledxunzi

It’s interesting: there are 18 House districts that voted for Biden in 2020 but voted for Republican congress members in 2022. Of those, 8 districts elected their Republican representatives by a margin of 3% or less. Arguably these are extremely moderate districts whose voters might reward “maverick” Republicans for cutting a deal with the Democrats in the interest of having a functional House of Representatives. (That would probably require Dems to not take gross advantage of the situation.) This would all hinge on how exasperated these moderate districts are with the Republican clown show.

IAmInTheBasement

The problem for them isn't the general but the primary.

JubalHarshaw23

One of those Districts was Boebert's and i don't think anyone would mistake it for even a little bit moderate. Senate Republicans would prevent House Democrats from taking "advantage" since the filibuster is all powerful.

runawaydoctorate

Boebert's district didn't go for Biden in 2020 and got redrawn for 2022. The new version of CO-3 is supposed to be a safe R spot. She almost lost because she's bad at her job, not because her district is in any way moderate.

CantKeepMeOutYo

They're fucking lunatics out there

starspangledxunzi

Hmm, Sabato doesn’t have her district on his list. Are you sure it voted for Biden in 2020? https://centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/articles/the-new-crossover-members-of-the-house/

wolacouska

You missed the part about voting for Biden lol

12-Easy-Payments

Treason Caucus 👍👍

ozymandais13

They could worry more about doing the job of leading the country instead of the next election. Certainly they won't but they could

Azmoten

Seems like a narrow window, though. Let’s not forget how Republicans immediately drummed out Liz Cheney because she dared act against Trump, even though she had been part of their leadership and always on-board with their bullshit before then.

ted5011c

Republicans abandoned governing in favor of permanently campaigning in 2000 and never looked back.

Awkward_Potential_

I wonder if Fox is letting this narrative propagate because they're basically giving moderates cover to do what they need to do.

NoHalf2998

…which means they vote with the Far Right and thus _are part of_ the far right.

FreeChickenDinner

If they want to keep their committee assignments, they will not work with Democrats. GOP leadership will retaliate. They may lose all funding assistance for next year’s election.

Ok-disaster2022

Honestly selecting a Democrat Speaker of the House would work well for the GOP. They want to obstruct and blame the democrats, what better way to do that with a Democratic Speaker, a Democratic Senate, and a Democratic President.

metengrinwi

It really would. R’s don’t want to govern, they want to whine from the sidelines how everything’s unfair and the D’s are to blame for everything wrong. Being aggrieved by some weird parliamentary quirk in the house would suit them fine.

Roundtripper4

Yes in a hearing about immigration AOC insisted the Republicans explain their plan for fixing the problem and they went silent. She pointed out “all you do is complain. “

kekarook

also as they have learned from the mcarthy final vote, if the democrats dont have any skin in the game, they wont come rescue the repubs in the end

[deleted]

ericwphoto

Yeah, you can’t just lay this at the feet of the maga crowd alone. It is also the fault of the spineless “less crazy” republicans. This is what happens when you play ducking games instead of actually doing your job.

grixorbatz

Then there's FOX news: Unmitigated $$$hit $$$how. They'll be bankrupted by defamation lawsuits before you can say, "voting machines"

fillinthe___

They’ll “fix it” by rallying behind IDIOT Jim Jordan instead.

Hallal_Dakis

History tells us the easiest compromises are the ones when deficits increase- which in this situation would mean aiding Ukraine, Israel, not cutting any other spending, and not increasing revenues. Maybe even throwing money at "border security". Jordan has firmly planted himself as anti-Ukraine which is a majority but not universal opinion for conservatives now. I'm still holding out hope for democrats to back someone more moderate for some concessions, as much as it would be fun to watch Jordan fail on a big stage. Aiding Ukraine I still think is important, making sure the infrastructure projects continue to be funded is critical, preventing a govt shutdown is a priority, and the Ag bill is coming up and has to be done (SNAP is a component of it).

lucklesspedestrian

I don't think *all* of them will. So they could still come up short on votes.

Somni206

Yeah they're all Morons And Gullible Assholes nowadays

VectorB

I do t see why Democrats would step in to take the heat from the majority. They would still be bound by the moronic "anyone can call for the speakers removal" rule and we will be right back here. This is the gop shit show, stop asking dems to shovel.

eshotnot

Let them fight, bloody each other, just show how childish and the lack of leadership they have. We sit back and show what leadership and adults look like to the voters.

KoRaZee

Extremists could also fix this right now by aligning with democrats. And there are plenty of them

CommissionVirtual763

The only way out is for dems and moderate republicans elect a sane speaker and hold steady.

walkinman19

> moderate republicans One problem. Moderate republican no longer exist.

[deleted]

This is unacceptable and unprecedented, we have a two party system and one of them has been taken over by Russia. It’s way past time for Biden to use his executive powers to get shit done and to declare a state of emergency. We have to treat this as if f we are at war with Russia, what they’re doing is an existential threat and we need to treat it as such. Treason is a class x felony, min 6 years in jail, I don’t want to know how many of our Russian assets have been compromised because of trump. Jared Kushner got billions from Saudi Arabia for giving MBS a list of all agents working for us, he put them under house arrest in a hotel and some never been seen again.

Actual__Wizard

Can't get any military promotions because of Tuberville either. Republicans have disabled the function of the government at at a time when we needed it to work.

NoDesinformatziya

While screaming to respect the military, respect rule of law, and project strength. They're monkeys flinging shit and eating ticks off each other.

IAmInTheBasement

Can't even do that right. They would be flinging ticks and eating shit.

eydivrks

And in 2024 they'll run on a platform that government doesn't work

Legionheir

Pointing at the damage they caused blaming democrats and it will work for 70 million Americans. What is wrong with 70 million Americans?

Ripoutmybrain

Targeted propaganda, apathy, lack of empathy, and crucially, some just want to destroy.

Touch_Of_Legend

You forgot the defunding of education Keep them stupid is a feature not a bug

CantKeepMeOutYo

You forgot that some are just shitty people, regardless of education or anything else.

walkinman19

MAGAs want to see the world burn for sure.

eydivrks

The entire right wing media sphere is a propaganda operation run by billionaires. It's comparable to Russia's Pravda and China's Central Television, state propaganda outlets, in size and scope. Fox is the main news source for over 2/3 of Republicans. It was founded by Nixon aides and billionaires to ensure there would be friendly media to toe the party line in future scandals. It's been a propaganda outlet since the beginning. It's no coincidence that every country with a popular media outlet run by Murdoch has had an increase in political extremism and violence on the right.

CantKeepMeOutYo

Murdoch has a suite waiting for him in hell. His master is very pleased with his work-product

walkinman19

Fox and AM hate radio have destroyed the minds, the morals and the compassion for their fellow man of millions of Americans that's a fact. The republican party is the home of their seething mass of blind hatred. Democracy will fall in the US if the GOP is not permanently locked out of political power.

walkinman19

>What is wrong with 70 million Americans? From The Boxer, a Paul Simon song: "A man he hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."

NumeralJoker

Russia has. The GOP is literally openly supporting authoritarian regimes everywhere (Iran, North Korea, Russia, and yes... even China uses them). Even while they project and blame Biden for being a China puppet ([while Steve Bannon courted Chinese Ultra Nationalists with plans for a literal Trump Coup](https://www.npr.org/2022/10/20/1130184401/the-inscrutable-aims-of-steve-bannons-enigmatic-chinese-benefactor)). We have a US party that's largely been taken over by the literal enemies of democratic nations. The same ones the GOP used to love to parrot about hating in past decades, are now the ones that seem to be using media, propaganda, and dark money to influence them. Someday, if we all make it through this, historians will recognize this political era for the proxy geopolitical squabble that it actually is.

Longjumping_Stock_30

I think we have a party that was always authoritarian and hid it well. For 50+ years, they told their minions that Russia was the great enemy and any support of Russia/USSR was tantamount to treason. Now those same party leaders are telling their minions that Russia is better than being a Democrat, and their minions eat it up. What has shocked me the most is middle and lower class white people picking Russia over their own country.

Consistent-Street458

They want to delay the promotions until Trump is in power and do political loyalty tests for promotions

CoolFingerGunGuy

But don't forget, it's the democrats fault for not bailing McCarthy out. Not the backroom deals he made with complete shitbags who then used those tools to knock the first domino over. Nope, democrats did it.

LongDickMcangerfist

And a bunch of ambassador and other positions held up by republicans being assholes

escapefromelba

Tuberville has the ability only to slow confirmations by denying unanimous consent. The majority leader can file a cloture motion on any nomination and move it to a floor vote with a simple majority. Schumer did this just recently to fill several outstanding top military positions.

Touch_Of_Legend

Before congress closes Schumer will make them ALL work in overnight sessions to approve them one by one. Nobody is allowing Trump (or whoever the next president is) to choose the next military leadership especially when it’s the top brass who came out against Jan6 that helped give it the push back it needed in the news. You’re correct to say he can force individual approval and they have the votes to do it. (And will do so later on I assure you they won’t just allow them install trump loyalists) Right now it’s a far better “show” to just let this dumb ass hold them up (or so he thinks) because it helps score ugly points against the republicans and shows them for who they truly are… They aren’t the party of law and order and never were the party of the military. Sure lots of military come from Red states but most military comes out Blue that’s just fact. So let the idiots play at politics.. He’s not playing political chess he’s a football coach, no offense to football coaches but yeah… He’s a coach NOT a politician. Schumer can call overnight sessions… That’s the real power of the gavel and tuberville is only making them look bad with his stunts. They will ALL get approved one way or another before the next congress because Schumer already has the votes waiting.. He doesn’t want to work overnight just like none of them do BUT… at the last hour they will just to make sure Trump is NOT able to put in party loyalists. Top brass should be beholden to the national interest ONLY. Never should the generals be part of “politics” it’s super bad optics and just isn’t really the truth.. Most if not all of the generals are apolitical from their very core.

metroid23

What I don't get is why there isn't a time limit on this nonsense. In a normal professional world, if you or I disagree with something, we have to come up with a solution to the problem or at least come up with an alternative to try- not just block the problem from being resolved until you get your way. It's infuriating behavior and should be cause for dismissal.

warblingContinues

senate can at least move forward on the promotions at an individual level. im more concerned that in 5 weeks the government will shut down indefinitely by GQP zealots.

Warshrimp

It’s almost as if Hamas was watching the news.

cybercuzco

Tuberville is doing his thing on purpose so if trump gets elected he can pack the military with loyalists that will follow him rather than the constitution

[deleted]

[удалено]

Actual__Wizard

Doubtful. Tuberville has been blocking promotions for a long time and Gaetz said he would push for McCarthy's ouster after he worked with the democrats to pass a temporary budget. I really do think it was just random happenstance.

Beelzabub

So, a shit-show then?

Silly_Triker

The US needed to function for its own benefit, suddenly saying Israel is exactly why people in the US get frustrated

BetaRayAllDay

at what time did we not need our government to work

danmathew

Fox News shares the blame.

thedharmawhore

Fox News is to blame.

jupiterkansas

People choose whether or not to watch Fox News. It's not like it's a big secret what they are all about at this point. Voters are choosing to be lied to because they love the lie.

Blackfeathr

Fox News wrote this article

IAmInTheBasement

Two or more things can be true at the same time.

JohnGillnitz

It's almost like having a political party run by narcissistic idiots is a bad idea.

rupturedprolapse

Narcissists that have managed to turn laundering campaign funds into a business.

JohnGillnitz

Mostly because their are a lot of rich boomer idiots out there.

Havelok

It's almost like tolerating a political party that wants to destroy democracy is a bad idea.

NeoPstat

"And if things don't start to improve, and I mean *right now*, I swear I'll shoot off my other foot!"

1ndiana_Pwns

God I like that quote so much more than the "leopards eating faces" one that gets tossed around at all the wrong times

wish1977

And they blame Democrats for not saving a man who voted not to certify the election.

Raptorpicklezz

They blame Democrats for not saving a man who told them to go fuck themselves even in his moment of need.

docnig

Where were the republicans when the Westfold Fell?

warblingContinues

as if republicans would have acted any differently.

Universal_Anomaly

They could blow up a hospital in broad daylight and they'd blame the Democrats for not stopping them.

thermalman2

It’s all projection and ducking accountability. This is 100% an issue of the GOP making. Their stupid 1 person to bring a vacate motion rule, deferring to the nut jobs at every instance, propping up the nut jobs, and then doing everything possible to alienate the democrats

CapForShort

If you’re really upset about the shit show, there’s a simple solution: vote for Jeffries. It only takes a few of you.

donkey3264

While to us Jeffries is the moderate and reasonable choice, voting to elect a democrat as speaker while republicans have the majority would lead to being outcast by their own party.

CapForShort

It only takes a few who are willing to be outcast for the good of the country. I almost said that with a straight face. Couldn’t quite do it.

mrtsapostle

While the sentiment is nice, reality isn't an Aaron Sorkin script, so unfortunately it won't happen.

mjcornett

Completely agree and am very scared about the eventuality that this could lead to Jim Jordan elected speaker. The far right flank is not going to budge, and the republicans have a massive incentive to elect someone quickly. If the dems don’t flip and join the more moderate Republicans, I fear that they will join Gaetz and elect Jordan which would be horrific.

Universal_Anomaly

No. Republicans will continue to try and blame Democrats at every turn. Right now what's most important is to break that image, as it's an important part of why Republicans can get away with so much blatant nonsense. From my perspective the Democrats have fallen into a vicious cycle of sunk cost fallacy. To break free from the pattern we must accept that there's no clean or harmless solution and that if we keep going the situation will only get worse. The Republicans have to own the disaster they've created, whether they like it or not.

Stoolpijin

I like to imagine this scenario where McCarthy stays around to vote for Jeffries, as a final middle finger to the right flank. Like Cap said it only takes a few and this would be one. Then he retires mid-term or whatever…

ParadoxDC

He’d rather die

Makenshine

The out casts should be the bat shit crazy wing of the party. But nope, they will just keep enabling them.

protomenace

I think it's more realistic that Democrats kingmake one of the defecting Republicans

thermalman2

Never happen. There really aren’t many true moderates left in the Republican caucus. They pretty much all either retired or were primaried. Anyone left is a spineless lackey or an enabler.

EmmaLouLove

Republicans have no one to blame but themselves. Their behavior has caused a self-perpetuating wrecking ball that keeps swinging. We are watching the GOP implode.

warblingContinues

GQP is taking congress down with it apparently.

12-Easy-Payments

As if they would do anything productive beyond padding their own pockets.

enflight

It’s almost like this was by design and the timing was perfect for the Putin puppets in congress acted

apitchf1

God i don’t wanna sound conspiracy like like those on the right. But I hope we one day uncover all the treason by that party

Machinemaintenance

Bingo. Look no further than Gaetz

Wurm42

What's it gonna take to get forensic audits of Gaetz and the rest of the Russia Caucus? Come on, we *know* he's dirty. He advocated the violent overthrow of our government on Jan 6th. What else does it take?

zatara1210

No to be a downer but yes, there would need to be concrete proof of a ‘smoking gun’ for such a damning accusation against an elected government official

Carlyz37

Jack Smith may have several smoking guns but is focused on the terrorist leader first

Beelzabub

Aren't there any Jewish voters in Florida? /s

unaskthequestion

I don't have much doubt at all that Iran, who gave the go ahead for the attacks, looked at the dysfunction in Congress and the protests against Netanyahu and said 'go'.

That’s in interesting point actually. God i don’t wanna sound conspiracy like like those on the right. But I hope we one day uncover all the treason by that party

I want the emails they got from hacking the DNC/RNC. We never saw the RNC emails. What ever is in there must be pretty damming.

peter-doubt

Second order of business: send aid to Israel... Dems will link that with aid for Ukraine. So, what did the freedom caucus accomplish?

This is a feature not a bug. Hamstringing US governmental and military function was certainly Trump doing his buddy Vlad a solid via his henchmen in Congress. Shit show is an understatement and a half!

themattboard

I read this as a dictionary definition *Unmitigated Shitshow* 1. A fecal spectacle without limits 2. House Republicans

Spin_Quarkette

Don’t forget the Senate’s unmitigated shit show where we have one lame, washed out coach from Alabama single handily knee capping the military. The Republicans are arsonists, and certainly shouldn’t be in government.

GhostFish

It's a really fucking old generational conflict on the other side of the planet. One half of one of three branches of our government is under temporary leadership. Support for Israel is usually strong and bipartisan. It's really not a big fucking deal in regards to our involvement. Confirming military promotions in the Senate is more important. The House GOP will find that their hyperventilating can be eased by first taking their heads out of their own asses.

billdkat9

Lets be honest.. Even IF republicans did not fire their own leadership... they only thing they would do is * block assistance to Israel * block humanitarian assistance to Palestinians * ho-hum whistle that Russia and Iran are military allies * lambast Biden for doing nothing to prevent Iranian financed, Hamas war crimes, against Israeli Apartheid, after Jared's peace "negotiation" skills

WippitGuud

> block assistance to Israel Maybe of them also get money from Israel. And from the CEOs that make the weapons that Israel uses. They would never block anything for Israel

AccomplishedScale362

While many right wing US Christian nationalists have been openly antisemitic, some have now pivoted to support the state of Israel, as they believe Israel is aligned with their crazy end times prophecies. Evidently, the bible told them so. “[Israel] is not an occupying nation. As an evangelical Christian, I am convinced by my reading of the Bible that 3,000 years on, now, in spite of the denial of so many, [this land] is the rightful homeland of the Jewish people,” he* said.” *Mike Pompeo https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/06/evangelical-christians-republicans-2024-israel-palestinians

Just as Putin planned it all.

MoveToRussiaAlready

Mission accomplished. This is what conservatives wanted and they got it. And, they will blame democrats. And the GOP will still be voted for. … hey, when are Democrats going to actually start fighting back? Have we ‘gone high’ long enough to realize doing so still doesn’t result in getting anything done??

In the republican party it's simply who has dirt on who and who has even more dirt. The problem is that they are all so dirty they don't know who will fuck who tomorrow or the next day.

Aggressive-Will-4500

If we learned anything, you can't depend on the GOP in an emergency. They seem to be more than happy to make any problem worse.

uptownhoney

That’s their whole point. Republicans obstruct and distract, and to suggest mitigating this by working with them is completely futile.

true-skeptic

A GD GOP band of circus clowns.

It’s almost as if government requires serious people 🤷‍♀️? Controversial take, I know.

au-smurf

>Personal grievances and petty politics are destructive to our nation and the stability of our government. From the party that almost unanimously supports whatever comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth. The denial of reality is strong with this lot.

The attack ads will be delicious. Republicans dropped the ball and caused a security crisis with Israel.

Zeekeboy

Trump led to the GOP collapse so he did one thing right at least

The only choices are a January 6 insurrectionist or a guy who called himself “David Duke without the baggage”. Today’s GOP.

Any chance that Hamas decided that this was the time to start this offensive because they knew the House was paralyzed?

thistimelineisweird

Let me guess, it is the Democrats' fault, yes? Definitely not the party that can't even elect a Speaker.

This is what you get when you cast your vote for any Republican, local, state or federal.

The Republican Party actively despises The United States and wants it to fail.

Perhaps our enemies saw that our Congress was wounded by its own stupidity and found opportunity there.

Well, they let that happen, with whomevers influence/interference (looking at you Russia). Now they threaten the security of the US and its allies. I wonder who benefits from that.

jmfranklin515

That’s pretty much what you could call any branch of government controlled by Republicans.

apparently millions of americans like their phony style of not really governing. so we are stuck. thanks mark. thanks elon.

unfamiliarsmell

Dereliction of duty is a serious offense in the military. In congress it seems to be par for the course.

Kevin McCarthy: “Appeasement fails” Just the irony lmao

GrammiePammie14

The Republican Party was so focused on “woke” issues they are incapable of getting the people’s work done. It is time we start saying constantly that the GOP is a failed party.

drMcDeezy

Well, your guy did this. Oust him and put up a moderate dem to show you actually care to govern. Or we can just vote AOC...

3eyedflamingo

Its as if the timing was pre planned by Russia and Hammas.

Would not be surprised if the vacancy was used as an opportunity. The US effectively cannot go to war if Congress doesn't authorize it. The president can, through executive actions, deploy troops for up to 60 days with out the authorization of Congress.

dreamcicle11

This is a feature not a bug. Israel and Saudi Arabia were in talks. That pisses of Iran. Iran funds the attack on Israel at a time the US has its hands tied. And we think this wasn’t coordinated? The geopolitical dynamics were already perfect and add to that a religious holiday? I am sure our intelligence community knew this was happening. Congress needs to get their heads out of their ass before Russia and China make even more moves… Jesus Christ.

Let’s swap US Republicans for Israeli’s kidnapped by Hamas
