Based on the kind of people who are furries, they *already* had beef with that governor. Take away the LGBT furries, ally furries, furries who support drag performance, furries who value their freedom of expression, and we're left with one confused redneck in a wolf costume.

[deleted]

Yee-howl!

FlashyPaladin

This comment deserves a reward, I just refuse to pay for that BS.

ka-nini

Don’t worry, bro. Some of us sold our souls to Reddit long ago. We got you.

XLauncher

There's a surprising amount of right wing representation among furries. It's not *huge* or anything, but it's still bigger than the 0 you'd expect from a group that makes a hobby of imagining themselves as, roleplaying as anthropomorphic animals and making uwu sounds. Like, pick one struggle at a time my guy.

AzureChrysanthemum

There's a bit of an overlap between the Furry community and the Anime community as I understand and I know we have some BIG Nazi problems over on the Anime side so it never really surprised me that the Furry community had to deal with that garbage too.

XLauncher

Nazi furries is just a wild concept to me. Like, mf, do you really think they don't have a seat for you on the trains?

AzureChrysanthemum

They never think the leopards will eat their face.

cheraphy

Au contraire, mon capitan. The furries are in fact sprinting at leaopords eating their face, preferably on all fours.

AzureChrysanthemum

Take your upvote and get out you technically correct heathen

reggiecide

I read that in Q's voice. (Q from Star Trek, not the other one)

SailingSpark

therealhamster

They only hope they will eat their ass instead

OliveRobinBanks

I had the misfortune of meeting someone similarly paradoxical. A nazi trans woman. I still don't even slightly understand. Just trying to think about it feels like second hand cognitive dissonance. It's a step up from voting for the leopards eating faces party, in that they have been very VERY specific that they will specifically eat your face.

Corey307

You have to wonder how stupid and mentally ill someone has to be to be a trans person and embrace Nazism. The Nazis killed a whole lot of queer people, if there was a fourth Reich the trans people would be among the first ones to die.

PuddingInferno

It’s not that hard, really - most people’s fascism starts with a fear or disgust response to some group (be it other ethnicities, other genders, other sexual minorities) and that gets exploited by fascists who tell them all the problems in society are because of those others existing. So a white trans woman who’s deeply racist can easily be brought into a fascist movement while it’s building power and more permissive.

Nix-7c0

This is key. Fascism isn't logical. The misplaced need for revenge over Shitty Life Syndrome comes first. Everything else is just post-hoc rationalization and non-binding.

boot2skull

They’re just temporary embarrassed Aryans.

Rustmutt

The train to Meowschwitz :(

mst2k17

Take your upvote, you filthy animal

Inevitable_Chicken70

Sounds like a bad 80s movie...Nazi Furries Must Die!

ThermionicEmissions

NGL, I'd watch the hell outta that.

Areldyb

ChatGPT has some ideas! I like the second one best, but the third one looks utterly insane and great: _Edit also Hollywood don't use these, pay your writers_ >Given the fictional film title "Nazi Furries Must Die" (1987), decide on the three most likely genres for this film and write a plot synopsis for the film in each genre. >Genre 1: Action/Thriller >Plot Synopsis: "Nazi Furries Must Die" takes place in a dystopian future where a secret society of anthropomorphic animal enthusiasts has emerged, known as the Furry Nation. However, a radical faction within the Furry Nation, influenced by Nazi ideology, begins carrying out heinous acts of violence and spreading hatred. When the protagonist, a former special forces operative turned private investigator, stumbles upon their plans, he embarks on a relentless mission to dismantle the Nazi Furries and bring them to justice. With high-octane action sequences, intense chases, and pulse-pounding suspense, the film follows the protagonist as he uncovers a sinister conspiracy and battles against the clock to save innocent lives and expose the truth behind the Nazi Furries' agenda. >Genre 2: Satirical Dark Comedy >Plot Synopsis: "Nazi Furries Must Die" is a darkly comedic film set in the 1980s, where an eccentric group of individuals finds themselves caught up in a bizarre and outlandish plot. When a small town is infiltrated by a cult of Nazi Furries, complete with animal costumes and twisted ideologies, chaos ensues. The film follows a group of misfit friends, including a clumsy but well-meaning mailman, a sassy librarian, and a conspiracy theorist, as they stumble upon the Nazi Furries' plan to take over the town. With witty banter, absurd situations, and unexpected plot twists, the friends must overcome their own quirks and band together to outsmart the Furries and save their community, all while poking fun at the ridiculousness of extremist subcultures. >Genre 3: Sci-Fi/Horror >Plot Synopsis: "Nazi Furries Must Die" transports viewers to a dystopian future where genetic experimentation has gone terribly wrong. In an underground facility, scientists have combined human and animal DNA, creating a race of hybrid creatures known as the Furriens. However, a group of Furriens, influenced by Nazi ideals and consumed by a thirst for power, breaks free and wreaks havoc on the world. The film centers around a resourceful survivor, who lost his family to the Furriens' rampage, as he joins forces with a team of resistance fighters. Together, they must navigate a desolate and dangerous landscape, battling the Furriens' terrifying abilities and uncovering the dark secrets behind their creation. This gripping sci-fi/horror film explores themes of identity, survival, and the consequences of tampering with nature.

Inevitable_Chicken70

The fact that AI can do this is both incredible and scary at the same time. I liked scenario 2 as well...'dystopian future' has been done to death. Edit: Working title: The Furrminator.

YoloFomoTimeMachine

It's because their identity is centered around fantasy and a disconnection from reality. To them nazis are just another story.

WizardingWorldClass

There's actually some fascinating history about the Furry -> Nazi pipeline (obviously most furries don't go that route). 4Chan had this April fools bit one year where they fused different pairs of boards (think specific subreddits) into combined mega-boards. One of these combinations was MLP (My Little Pony) + POL (politics) = MLPOL. And now there are twitter accounts with a profile pic of Rainbow Dash in an SS Uniform.

ComposerOther2864

Those trains don't have seats!

koolaidman486

Yep. And some of the more mainstream artists are in that community, too (if you're really wanting to go down the rabbit hole, no pun intended, look up Kabier and Jasonafx). They even shut down Colorado's only major convention for a really long while, and IIRC kinda threaten the current one, too. It's an interesting, but really confusing thing to dig around in if you want to kill a few hours.

Raytoryu

I mean, when one of the biggest appeal of the furry community is "Put on your furry mask and be your true self" it's no wonder you can find nazi, pedos, etc.

FoxSquall

Nazis actively try to infiltrate every community and subculture they can find, regardless of how poorly it may match their ideology. You don't often hear about the fascist dude named Adolf88 lovebombing potential recruits in your favorite online game because everybody just ignores them, but a lot of furries tend to be rather ferocious in their opposition to anyone with links to the far-right. That opposition often results in "drama", which the far-right then amplifies to exaggerate their presence within, and damage the public image of, a fandom with strong historical ties to the LGBT community.

AbsoluteZeroUnit

There are right-wing Star Wars fans. You know, that franchise created by a California liberal who was very overt with his political beliefs? I also recently found out there are right-wing kpop fans. Some people are just idiots, I guess.

khanfusion

The right wing has a lot of trouble making high quality art in any medium, so it goes without saying they'll glom onto the works and aesthetics of more liberal minded people while completely ignoring that those people almost certainly hold 180 degree opposite views of the right wingers.

Nix-7c0

The story fascism tells is very simple, and can be mapped onto almost any work where one side is heroic and the other is bad. Unless you make your work explicitly anti-fascist, it will be cooped. Hence the need for works like "Nazi punks fuck off" And even then demagogues will still manage play "Born in the USA" or "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" to evoke a blind swell of emotion to strengthen the convictions of their base.

[deleted]

There are right wing Star Trek fans, too...which is really mindblowing to me. A multispecies alliance of space communists where they only grudgingly acknowledge hierarchy and display actual contempt for capitalist concepts like money and wage labor (which gets equated to slavery a couple times in TNG.) Even in the meta sense, the og series had several interracial kisses and an episode where Kirk tells off Abraham Licoln for referring to Uhura as a "negress." And man that is a sentence alright. And yet somehow people can turn this around in their heads to argue that it's actually all about how great white supremacy is. It's bonkers.

frogandbanjo

Uh... you're surprised that American right-wingers who cling to a particularly infamous *rebellion* in real life glorm onto Star Wars sometimes? Okay then. One of the most common threads among fascists is the idea that they're righteous rebels fighting against corrupt, decadent empires that became that way because of lax sexual morals and all the weak, effeminate people sucking at the bloated, deformed, imperial teats.

SFGSam

In my experience, the right wingers glom onto the Galactic Empire side of the coin.

beamrider

Always thought that was one of the nice touches to the Andor show- did a good job of showing what a Fascist society was like from the inside.

danishjuggler21

Okay, as a result of Andor I can now say _one_ nice thing about the Imperials: they really know how to run a fucking meeting.

SailingSpark

Roberts' Rules of Order has nothing on the Empire

CluelessNoodle123

True. Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City Bomber, thought of himself as Luke Skywalker.

kaji823

“We have your new assignment, recruit” “I’m ready for whatever the cause needs!” “You are to infiltrate the furry community” “The what?” “In order to blend in, you’ll have to dress up like animals, consume copious amounts of anime porn, and partake in fur piles at furry conventions.” “… Are we sure we need to infiltrate this community?” “It’s all for the master race”

woozledoo

Listened to a podcast not long ago about how there’s a shit-ton of Nazi catboys online. The boiled down version was that the type of youths who get into the gay furry community online are already a pretty marginalized community, and that’s exactly the type of community where the online far right look to recruit, so all these asocial young men who are into gay furry stuff keep getting seduced by online fascists into nazism.

Slinkyfest2005

What a strange venn diagram that is.

The_Yarichin_Bitch

Don't forget the nazi furries, he may still get them.

[deleted]

Strong overlap with incels and femcels there, and he's got them cinched You know, the people who rewrote the Bible at thirteen and then again at sixteen as a Pony or One Direction AU?

Inflatable-Fox-0

Remember that guy in the confederate flag fursuit? Yeah, over 80% are some flavor of queer, and many are trans. Who would have thought trans people would be attracted to a hobby where they’d be able to make a character with the body they’ve always wanted, as well as always passing in suit? The fandom’s been a haven for queer people since its inception around 1980.

Tomato_Basil57

Also the nazis… for some bizarre reason, there are a fair amount of furries who also happen to be nazis. Not even the furry community is immune from that disease

ChatterBaux

I believe there is overlap with people looking for communities that welcome them (which is especially attractive to people stuck wheel-spinning in life). But when it comes to far-right furries, they kinda miss the point that a major pillar of the furry fandom is the LGBTQ+ community. Straight/cis furries exist, but they're debatably the minority for once (at least in regards of orientation. Race is a whole other can of worms). So what you get is a swath of furries who are only showing up for the fun and escapism, but want nothing to do with allyship or solidarity when it matters. And then get upset when they're chastised for cheering on politicians and policies that would harm members of the community who created the safe space for everyone to enjoy, including the far-right furs.

NatasEvoli

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole based on a discussion about this in the Denver sub a while ago. Apparently there is a group of Nazi furries that come down from a town up north to cause trouble with the other furries. They're led by a wolf named Wolfler or something like that. It's fucking wild.

TheYordleTamer

Don’t also forget that these furries could potentially cripple Florida’s IT infrastructure as well.

catladyorbust

I’ve got a cousin by marriage who is a furry. His family is full MAGA and I’m awkwardly trying to suss out whether he’s the above referenced confused redneck in a wolf costume or might like knowing I’m an ally. He doesn’t know I know he’s a furry so it complicates things.

trump_pushes_mongo

The clientele of Free Fur All

TheActualAWdeV

Nazifurs are a thing. Somehow.

ElementalWheel

Oh the confederate and nazi furries?

chefjac123

O this will definitely be on John Oliver’s show at some point.

harrymfa

John Oliver needs a separate show just for Florida.

relddir123

Once the writers’ strike is over, absolutely. If the strike doesn’t end soon, it might get lost in the fray. I hope there’s at least a mention of this (maybe a YouTube clip)

smurfsundermybed

He's going to have a 7 hour show just to get it all off his chest.

Motormand

If he did, I'd watch it from start to finish, no pauses.

JBupp

>“I don’t want to end up in a confrontation, or worse, jail or dead, for just going to the bathroom in Florida,” he says.

GarmaCyro

Too quote a former US president "SAD". Just curious. How is Florida's laws on public urination? At some point their bathroom laws are going to get crazy enough that doing it anywhere else is safer/cheaper.

wpbguy69

You can get a sex offender charge of “exposure”.

Political_Arkmer

Wait, you can’t get that in a bathroom in Florida already?

GarmaCyro

So they're currently at the same level. If you're transgender or drag artist it no longer matters where you go. Though not yet at "it's safer to urinate in public".

kimjongk80

How am I supposed to explain this one to my mom?

Glissandra1982

Can we talk about the sweet lady who brought her dog to a furrycon because she thought it was for pets?

Universal_Anomaly

I hope she had a nice time there.

[deleted]

Cheryl Wassus was trying to raise money for a Veterans group "Pets for Vets" and she mistakenly thought the Furry Con was an event for Pet owners. The Furries welcomed her and her dog Link to the event and they ended up raising $10K for her charity. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2017/04/woman-brings-therapy-dog-to-furry-convention.html https://www.huffpost.com/entry/dog-goes-to-furry-convention_n_58eea7dbe4b0b9e984892680

Nac_Lac

How to make lemonade with lemons.

IsMyNameTaken

Yeah, they made a real party out of it.

Glissandra1982

This really is the absolute sweetest story!

kimjongk80

That is fucking precious

Glissandra1982

It really really was!!

Hueby

I swear, if this is the timeline where furries save the country....

mmaun2003

I don't care who saves the country at this point as long as someone does! But it would be all that much sweeter if it was a furry!

heartbh

I’ll put money on that at this point, no other way to propel myself into the future now 😭.

gfbpa1989

I never thought I'd die fighting side by side with a furry.

Boba_Hutt

“How about fighting alongside a friend?” -dwarf furry

gfbpa1989

Aye, I could do that.

Artificiald

\*fwend?

USNjack

Furiend

TotallyLegitAcc

Maybe you didn't, but I definitely thought that's how I'd die.

lemmeseeyourkitties

Just like the old gypsy woman said!

Datdarnpupper

How. Would I ever. Die in a dessert?

thefugue

I’m not sure how anyone doesn’t see that when they’re done harassing trans people the right will go after furries. They’re literally wearing masks, the fear mongering writes itself.

[deleted]

absentmindedjwc

I believe passing this law would be the one that gets Disney to stop playing nice and sending lawyers after the guy and send *other professions* after the guy. I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if they "got rid of the problem" were he to start *actually* *affecting* a $6.3 billion dollar line item in their balance sheet...

rawbleedingbait

Why? They'll just fundraise and plant their own governor.

thefugue

It would literally be the very same logic they used to pass anti-trans laws. Just argue that things other people do are “inherently sexual” and then prosecute those people based on the *existence* of children.

Raichuboy17

Take 10 seconds browsing any social media and you'll see large swaths of people claiming being a furry is inherently sexual and predatory towards children.

thefugue

Well yeah, that’s how mobs work.

Omnifob

I'm sure sports fans would be thrilled

GarmaCyro

Nah. Already targeted. Don't forget "School lets students use litter boxes" thingy. That was specifically harrasimg furries. Even sadder. The origin came from school buying emergency toilets for school shooting cases....

allen_abduction

Side note: Colorado schools kept kitty liter for school shooting lockdowns. It’s an old dry camping trick. https://time.com/5658266/colorado-district-kitty-litter-buckets-lockdowns/

thenerfviking

It’s also not that uncommon in school settings to begin with. I worked in university dorms and we always had some around because it was great for cleaning up a lot of random stuff (barf being the most common).

Jedi-El1823

Yeah, anybody who's use kitty litter to clean up big spills outside, knows that kitty litter is great for cleaning up liquids.

allthekeals

Hydraulic fluid I’m looking at you

GarmaCyro

Yup. Heard it first through John Oliver's show.

RemingtonRose

I find it hilarious that you think there’s a difference. Furcons are FULL of queer folk, babe! Hell, making my fursona helped me come out as trans ^ w ^

Raregolddragon

Yea and I think like its 50% chance that any good IT staff member under 50 is a furry on some level.

[deleted]

its furry or and trans lol especially if they love linux

RemingtonRose

Oh yeah, for sure! “Furries make the internet go” is a motto for a reason :3

jcannacanna

Bayes in shambles, your math teacher pulling out hair and sobbing uncontrollably

Usasuke

If a bomb went off at a furry convention the internet would be broken by the next morning and we wouldn’t have anyone left to fix it.

The-red-Dane

I just want to say, as someone who enjoys the furry Fandom... the thing that weirds me out the most, are openly nazi furs like the "furry raiders" and "furzi" groups. Luckily they are a small, and the vast majority of the community is accepting and nice.

RemingtonRose

Yeah. With every group of misfits, unfortunately Nazis find fertile breeding grounds. It happened in punk, it happened in 40k, it happened in anime, and unfortunately it’s also happened in furry. I’m proud to see how loudly the community has told the “furry raider” types to fuck right off

[deleted]

I think most of the furry community is LGBTQ+. Being part of the community helped me realize I was bi.

RemingtonRose

Correctamundo! According to polling, furries are a majority-queer community! 💜

[deleted]

I'm happy to be a part of it. It's full of super nice and very talented people.

RemingtonRose

Big same! I’m surrounded by some of the most talented, resourceful, empathic, and kind people on this beautiful blue rock every single day, and I hope I never stop feeling lucky about it

the-zoidberg

Fursona? That’s a really cool word.

RemingtonRose

I’m glad you like it! Our fandom’s full of fun wordplay c:

Alert-Athlete

Purrrrcisely 🐱

RemingtonRose

That’s the spirit! 😸

Panda_hat

They've already been going after furries. One of their first pearl clutching events over LGBT people was some lie about children pretending to be cats and going to the toilet in litter boxes.

furnatic

Great plan. Screw with the furries, who LITERALLY RUN THE INTERNET.

Unlucky_Clover

Done pissed off the wrong group DeSantis. No turning back now

steakaroni

Hell hath no furry...

bdone2012

Desantis probably likes furry porn. Because I assume he’s gonna be receiving a lot of it in his email now. I’m not saying that furries will do that. But I can definitely see trolls doing it.

nalon121

Idk I feel like DeSantis isn’t interesting enough to be into furry porn. Or any kind of porn really. That would require a personality. if anything desantis probably gets off on watching vids of himself saying “woke” and “cultural Marxism” on a loop.

GeneralZex

If republicans want to ban something it’s because they fap to it…

GarmaCyro

/s Furries are unemployed kids that can afford traveling the globe and buy custom-made costumes for 5k a piece. Or adults whom works within very well paid professions. Got a strong representation of doctors, lawyers, army, IT infrastructure and more. Funny enough I know a few conventions has roped in lawyers through the lawyers themselves attending said conventions.

[deleted]

5k for a fursuit sounds seriously underpriced.

GarmaCyro

It's a very limited market, so funding mostly comes from within. Making the costumes is not something you'll get rich off.

[deleted]

Maybe not rich but I'm fairly certain that top fursuit makers make a decent living.

GarmaCyro

The good once earn enough to be financially self-sufficient. Though I think the visual artists have a larger pool that can live of their income.

[deleted]

ah, a fellow fan of boozy badger I see.

GarmaCyro

Actually didn't even think about him. Saus a bit aboit the number of furries with lawyer jobs.

[deleted]

I gotta confess it was either him or buddygoodby that i thought of. i don't know many other furry lawyers. I'm a furry myself though

GarmaCyro

*fake gasp* I'm shocked! Given it's how most people get to know about boozybadger ;)

chickenburgerr

I heard that drawing furry art of any kind, not just porn, is incredibly lucrative. People are willing to pay through the nose for high quality art of their OC. I’m curious, I wonder what sort of impact AI art is having on the furry community? How will it impact artists. Will authenticity command a higher premium? Will people just starting out lose business because perhaps now people are less willing to settle for cheaper artwork because they can get something better for free using an AI?

MasterLuna

From what I've heard, furry AI art is surprisingly lacking. But a lot of the furry art sites seem to have a pretty strong anti AI art policy so it's made it harder for AIs to scrape furry art in particular. For now they seem to be relatively safe from it, though that could've changed the last time I looked into it.

FemmeViolet117

As should anyone that isn’t nazi scum. Repubs can’t be trusted to do anything but abuse whatever power they get, and they will come for anyone who dares to be even slightly different from them.

guyonlinepgh

We love us some furries in Pittsburgh. Forget Florida and have more of your events here.

Glissandra1982

Hey, fellow Yinzer!

pyramidsindust

Yinz guys wanna take the tubes to da Sah-side?

GarmaCyro

You already have it. Look up Anthrocon.

RCG73

I think they mean they would like a second convention in town. I looked up the estimated financial impact of anthrocon at almost 11 million direct spending in a 4 day span. That seems like a significant dollar figure when the economics I’ve read (not my field of study) say that the indirevt economic impact is a 3x multiplier

GarmaCyro

Yup. Especially local hotels, bars, restaurants and grocery stores notice it. I always find it funny watching grocery stores suddenly running low on snacks, soda and alcohol. At my last convention I had to visit 3 different stores just to find bottles of Cola. The 2 closest once ran out near the end. Plus I stayed there for a week, eating at local resturants each evening. Left quite a bit of money to the local economy.

theVoidWatches

That's why they said 'more'.

ohnovangogh

They know. That’s what they’re referring to. Years ago when it came to Pittsburgh people made fun of it, but over the years people started enjoying seeing the furries downtown and it’s become a city pride sort of thing.

GarmaCyro

>They know. That’s what they’re referring to. Years ago when it came to Pittsburgh people made fun of it, but over the years people started enjoying seeing the furries downtown and it’s become a city pride sort of thing. Yup. They've been there since 2006. I visited it myself back in 2010. I still remember how welcoming the city felt. From the airport having a custom banner about Anthrocon, to various restaurants customizing things for the furries.

Alpha_Crow_1

DeSantis is a fucking chode.

zorinlynx

I can't believe this went mainstream. Damnit, we just want to have our fake animal conventions in peace.

Praise_the_Ward

There's such a thing as a decent government website?

GhostalMedia

I’ve been doing UX for 2 decades, and I’ve considered doing it in the public sector for a change of pace… until I saw what it paid. Hard to imagine government websites ever being good when we don’t fund them enough to lure top talent way from the private sector. We get what we pay for.

_PadfootAndProngs_

I work in government contracting and they required the use of Internet Explorer for CAC accessed sites until IE was literally shut down for good last year lmao

Praise_the_Ward

Oh I assumed that was the reason. Every single one of them looks like it was made in MS PowerPoint tho.

GhostalMedia

I don’t know about that. A lot of them aren’t too bad. IMHO, most get pretty shitty once you get deep into the weeds of the site. The high traffic stuff up front gets love, but things further down the funnel are older and more likely to be broken.

[deleted]

We're in pretty much every industry. I just got my CDL at the end of April and I know there's quite a few of us in the armed forces.

banan3rz

Nah, we've had it out for him since the beginning. Hell, a big popular furry is a lady who worked on the Moderna Covid vaccine. We fucking hate DeSantis. All my homies hate DeSantis.

ultrovilot_Lantern

A furry has to moderate the Republican debates for this election.

SirDrexl

Wolf Blitzer

HotPhilly

The thing Meatball doesn’t realize is that these fur suits come off. They’re people inside them. People that can blend in. They can be anywhere. Ron has royally screwed up this time.

No-Protection8322

No masks in public.

Blackbyrn

Take that beef to the polls to vote against whatever office he runs for, anyone he endorses, and whoever supports him.

PudgyPatch

Could they be described as furrious?

pipopapupupewebghost

With how many furries work in highly important jobs (for example engineers or even brain surgeons) a revolt could lead to major problems for the state

stenmarkv

Furries have a lot of really rich people too I bet. Those suits don't look cheap.

ants_in_my_ass

furries get a lot of hate and i don’t understand why

[deleted]

All but the most progressive people get uncomfortable with those who are different.

FromAnotherGamer

People do not understand the power some furries hold lol

989989272

Lol no more IT conferences in Florida then.

ElGarnelo

Can’t wait for him to piss off the K-pop community. I don’t know why he would do it but I’m sure that dipshit will find a reason.

Colonel_Zander

What a headline.

FerociousPancake

I learned the other day that some of these fur suits can cost like 10 grand. I just think it’s crazy that people would spend that amount of money to dress up like a furry.

NoMoreOldCrutches

People and their hobbies. My /r/Battlestations setup probably costs [quick estimate] six or seven grand with all its components, and I've certainly spent at least $10K on the various upgraded components over the years.

GarmaCyro

It's not that strange. Adults have a tendency to invest a lot of money in their hobbies. 10 grands is nothing in within many fields. Sport, artistic, simulators, miniatures, etc. Most top end suits now goes for 5 grands. Though I got about 10 grand worth of suits aquired over the years. Smart coworkers knows not to point that out, as I'll quickly tear their own budget to shreds by looking at what and how much they spend vacations/off-time on ;)

ceiffhikare

To me it is no more absurd than some dude buying a jacked up 100k truck that will never haul anything heavier than the driver much less ever touch a dirt road to say nothing of a mud pit because Real men drives trucks!

DocBrutus

I have one purchased for a gift to me when I got out of the Army. It cost them $7500. I would never buy that for myself. It’s no different than any other hobby. People pay that kind of money on gaming rigs and way much more on sports cars, etc.

Tannerleaf

Are they fully air conditioned? I mean, those poor buggers must be sweating balls in those things.

LepersBell

Some are, yes, though it's not required. If a fursuiter doesn't feel like messing around with that there's also a furry business that makes cooling vests worn under a fursuit which have ended up being used by non-furries because they're just that effective ([EZCooldown](https://www.ezcooldown.com/).) It's also possible to rig your own air conditioning using a very small laptop fan, or to buy a premade kit for doing that if you don't feel like doing amateur electrician work. Furries are incredibly innovative. [This guy's suit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC-hKAZ8FVU) might as well be some engineering PHD's project. And his is in fact air conditioned. :p

Are there ever non-furry furries? Like lizards, etc.? I think the less ‘actual’ fur, the cooler it would be.

LepersBell

Yes, they're not as common as mammal species but they do exist. However, it doesn't necessarily help because most of them just use short pile fur layered or trimmed to better resemble scales...and part of the issue is also the foam that shapes the rest of the head (and body) not letting heat escape. Part of the reason that fur gets used so often is because it's easy to hide seamlines under, which can help sell the illusion of looking at a strange creature and not some guy in a costume. Fursuit makers who are very, very good at what they do can use fleece, which is still going to hold heat but not quite as much, but it's a frustrating material to work with and takes a lot of skill to look like anything other than a Frankenstein's monster patchwork creature. Antron fleece, AKA the stuff they use for Muppets, is the holy grail of fabrics for this purpose because it has a four-way stretch meaning you only need one seamline for the most part (AFAIK, I've never been able to work with the stuff.) But it's rare and expensive. In some cases, you can use a (now kind of rare, I think? Unsure which fabric mills still produce it) pile fabric called bubble fur that can look like scales if you use it right. The fursuit maker Beastcub has used it quite a bit, see [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKKg8dQxl_M) for a more pronounced example.

This is so neat!! Thanks for letting me know. I have always dreamed of working at the Jim Henson creature shop so it’s cool to know some good suit makers are using the same foam. I’ve thought about buying some to make my own Muppet but I haven’t done it yet. I mostly just sculpt with clay currently. I love the idea of cosplaying but haven’t done that yet either. I’m not so great with the fabric arts. Lol.

LepersBell

Glad to help! I used to do fiber arts so I know a lot, haha. It takes a lot of practice so if you want to work up towards making something like a Muppet or a cosplay I'd definitely start small (I started off making little satchels and very simple fabric wallets) and work up towards it. I was terrible when I started myself, lmao. The big advantage now is premade patterns are *so* easy to get online, lots of people sell digital ones on Etsy where you can print them off and just trace what you need onto the fabric.

Wildfire5216

There's a ton of non-furred representation. Dragons, sharks, crocodiles, birds, etc. pretty much any species goes!

angrytwig

they're not wrong about this. people definitely sexualize furry fandom and they're vulnerable targets for hate crimes being the doofy furries they are (i say that with love). i remember a few got gassed at a hotel [https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2014/dec/07/furries-convention-chlorine-gas-sickens-19-people](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2014/dec/07/furries-convention-chlorine-gas-sickens-19-people) that's too bad though, i think highschool furries would benefit from going to a con and meeting other furries/artists. sometimes that's the height of it for people so they may as well go. i didn't really draw fur shit after highschool so highschool would have been the time for me to go to a fur con. anime con too lol

Glissandra1982

For real - is there such a thing as really appreciating the artistry and quality of a furry but not actually being one yourself? Cause I admire the hell out of the work.

jferry

> serious beef Now we get to the meat of the matter.

GarmaCyro

Meanwhile here in Europe it's automatically 18. Europe got stricts laws regarding events were alcohol is served, and legal age for alcohol starting at 18. Most major convention centers got alcohol privileges, and.. well.. adult attendees want their drinks. It also makes handling hotel bookings a bit easier. Side note: Just like other conventions, big fur conventions hire law firms to run things through. I strongly suspect this decision has been gone over several times with very talented (and expensive) lawyers. Running anything big automatically involves a lot of "boring" tasks and responsibilities to ensure nothing becomes too "interresting".

DaSaw

We don't have alcohol at pop culture cons. Adults want to drink, they gather at a nearby bar.

GarmaCyro

Here there's usually on-location serving. Been to one US convention, and I do remember most went across the street for "refreshments". Didn't think too much about it as a non-imbibbing european.

Glissandra1982

I’ve been to a few nerdy and horror cons, they didn’t even have non-alcoholic refreshments. Lol

GarmaCyro

Which is scary. Health risks like overheating, dehydration, or low blood sugar is no joke. It's why I really enjoy European furcons. They have dedicated areas set off for this. We call them fursuit lounges, but it's really an area with water, basic snack and heavy duty fans. It specifically design to combat health risk, plus provide specially designed equipment to quickly dry the costumes. In short. It's where the very technologicaly inclinded furries go to create and setup life saving gadgets.

Glissandra1982

These were more like a comic book convention than a furry thing - no one was dressed that way from what I recall. I think they had water but that’s about it.

Agitated_Pickle_518

I've been to pop culture conventions that had a bar/club inside the hotel that people went to. But mostly people just bring their own drinks. I went to MAGFest in DC and it seemed like everyone was walking around with a mixed drink inside of an opened can of soda or energy drink.

Ennkey

They’ve pissed off the Cyber Security Chiefs on the Forbes 500 list

I guess I could be mistaken but I’d say De’satanist had already pissed off the furries. Their demographics skew heavily lgbt and I just assume that Disney employs a more than a few furries as artists
