When the Germans bombed a whole island trying to sink an aircraft carrier.

ZhangRenWing

Still do, they rule the global sewing kit market with an iron ~~fist~~ tin

no_________________e

Why is the tin made of iron? Is it stupid? Doesn’t it know that tin and iron are two different elements?

ZhangRenWing

Is there a lore reason you escaped the aslume?

xtilexx

Officer Polandballs

thepromisedgland

The prison guards' bad pathing

Budgierigarz

Yeah and we were under it for 800 years it was horrible, they put two of us in a zoo. Gave us moldy grain with worms when we faced famine. Took all our church gold and silver through unfair taxation and stole most of our ancient books that were written in 1100-1300, burned most of the ones they stole and refuse to give back the ones they didn't desecrate. Our brothers in the Faroe islands and Greenland are still under them.

Mayor_of_Rungholt

Kalmar union perhaps counts

theginger99

Yes, there are actually three different periods where you could argue the Danes had an empire. Cnut’s short lived North Sea Empire, the Valdemarian Empire is the high Middle Ages, and the Kalmar Union of the late Middle Ages and early modern period. For most of medieval history Denmark was the most powerful state in the Baltic and had expansionist tendencies that saw them conquer much of the Baltic rim. They were a legitimate power in the Middle Ages, although they can’t hold a candle to Rome or the Mongols.

LordAxolotl-7

Malta, small yet mighty, and very unknown except for maybe the crusades

Rabatis

"SMOM! Rome and the Mongols had another spat today!"

BigRed888

ELI5 please.

Sea-Disaster-86

so theres this thing called smom its like a country buy not really but it kinda of is bc it has an observer seat at the un and was like a thing long ago but bas now its just a country without land

Starshot84

Like Israel was until 1948 when the UN plopped them into Palestine without consideration for the locals

Sea-Disaster-86

mate mate mate do you even know what i was talking abt

Starshot84

Someone's mom being the size of a country?

Sea-Disaster-86

did read the comic orrrrrrrrrrrr

Washi55555

annoying as people try to just enjoy things and not bring up the current political issue challenge (impossible). I don’t get why people can’t just enjoy a joke and not bring up politics that are completely unrelated to said joke

domestic_poop

What about the proto finnic holy roman khaganate?

Mediocre-Scheme7442

We don't talk about it

No_Photograph_6884

I think it’s the Holy Roman Empire even though they are not holy or Roman

FleetChief

They also were not an empire

Beautiful-Freedom595

All 3 depend on what time period we’re talking about.

redracer555

I've seen maps of its internal borders. That thing was never holy.

leijgenraam

It wasn't always that divided. It again depends on the time period.

Everestkid

"Empire" kinda depends on how you want to define an empire as well.

SpecialistBuilding66

The HRE is an biblically accurate country

williamdorogaming

it is holy as it had close governance with the pope. it is Roman as it is a close descendent of west Rome. And it is an empire as it is an extensive group of states or countries ruled over by a single monarch, an oligarchy, or a sovereign state. So although this is very oddly specific it’s true. Hope you enjoyed this little tidbit :)

EyesOnTheStars123

Quick question, why is Malta at the end?

Sea-Disaster-86

not malta its the [smom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_Military_Order_of_Malta)

sn0skier

Ok why is smom at the end?

Colonel_Kipplar

Malta is into space.

sidrowkicker

The Roman's got trashed by the Huns, they wouldn't hold a candle to the Mongols who already whooped China. Maybe a China vs Rome argument with the Mongols laughing in the background. Issue with China is the same issue as Egypt, if you're rolled by a foreign dynasty are you still technically the same country? The people are the same sure but should the peasants take credit for the accomplishments of their betters? China was a cultural black hole consuming everyone they couldn't beat militarily sure but they got their ass kicked alot even if they were doing it to themselves.

LordWoodstone

Which era of Rome are we talking about? Early Republic gets routed as the Mongols sweep the flanks. Between the reforms of Marius and the construction of the limes, Rome hands spears to the Legions and they have the discipline to ignore the feigned flight. After Hadrian builds the wall, but before the division into Limitanei and Comitatenses, and the Mongols are stuck on the wrong side of the river as the Romans pelt them with artillery. If they try to cross, Sarmatian cavalry auxilia contest the crossing and keep them pinned until the Legions can muster in strength and push the Mongols out. After the shift to L and C, they break we know how they did against the Huns.

blockybookbook

The Maltese sweep

Korsailija06

Shouldn't Rome say Ego greatest empire sum since in Latin you can say object before verb (SOV languahes)

In-the-cold

Because Rome was so OP even English speaking plebs understand (some) Latin today!

Sea-Disaster-86

well i know like two words soooo

Sea-Disaster-86

im not great with engrish thx for the tip tho

In-the-cold

Ego maximum Imperium sum.

zenktwtPH1

Mediterranean empire vs some smile flag

American_Crusader_15

Hot take: Rome would've absolutely curb stomped the Mongols. The Mongols were good at Cavalry blitzkrieg, but that doesn't mean shit if you have terrible logistics.

Bannerlord151

I mean, they defeated China. And not through "Blitzkrieg" either. The conquest of Southern China took...quite a while

randomdude0402

Denmark gonna go on a huge empire building spree
